stil getting the debris/water in the USB-C port error on my Quest 3, cant wait to change it
Why do we need a cheaper Quest 3, when the Quest 3 is already cheap (relatively speaking). I would rather hear about work on progressing towards Quest 4. Like more processing power, increased resolution, and OLED display (well those are on my wish list).
Its going to be slightly ironic if this ends up running quest 3 games smoother and with more battery life than quest 3 because it's running at a lower resolution!
True but they might end up doing a smaller battery in that case to reduce size and weight. Longer battery life would be a good thing for entry level users though to help user retention.

Incredible that they could keep the passthrough and the other features for that price. No compromises for different hardware in the OS - all the same.
But the fresnel lenses are rough on the eyes if you have ever seen the beautiful Q3 ones.
I suspect that this won't sell anywhere near what they are hoping for.
Not a big enough leap from Quest 2, and Quest 2 for many was an impulse buy to try out the new VR thing.
Most people stopped using theirs pretty quickly.
I doubt they're going to jump on it again for not too dissimilar a price as they bought a Quest 2, for essentially the exact same design, same display, but slightly upgraded graphics. Not convinced.
Quest 3 is a worthwhile upgrade, but what the masses really want is a much greater leap ahead, especially in ergonomics.
Fair play for the effort of getting a cheaper Quest 3 out there. I just don't think this continued race to the bottom is going to be as fruitful as they'd hope.
I suspect the fresnel lenses are because of the same LCD panel as the Quest 2. They would probably have to do new distortion profile and other things to accommodate the pancake lenses on the old LCD panel. Also, maybe with pancake lenses on the lower res panels it actually looks worse than using fresnel.
probably does not make much sense to upgrade to this from quest2 especially those that use pcvr but guess good option for those that want to try VR and don't want to spend a lot if it keeps that $299 price point. They probably need like a $700 range "pro" device with eye tracking and maybe index like sound or something.
Yeah this is a sidegrade if you come from Quest 2 however it is a good option for those that doesn't have VR yet.
Meta aren't interested in making a PC optimised exclusive device.
If they did, it could be incredible. But sadly for VR, they don't comprehend why that would be a good idea.
Anything "pro" from Meta is always going to be held back by their mobile focused design.
Quest Pro was severely held back because of that, and it failed miserably for that exact reason.
Rather than make a compelling Pro device for PC, they'd rather push back the next pro headset many years instead to wait for the mobile side of things to catch up.
Sad, holds the industry back, but that's what it is.
Thankfully, its not just meta out there. Valve are still in the game, it'll happen. Pimax, while old brick on my face design, provide amazing quality now at a good price, Bigscreen will move onto BSB2, and we have some very good competitors like Immersed, raising the bar for whats possible too with Visor (which I have preordered).
Don't really see the reason for this. On an entry level, you still have the Q2. For all features go for Q3. Something in between doesn't really make sense.
#1 An increasing number of titles are going Quest 3 only. Like the new Batman Arkham game. These will not run on Quest 2.
#2 Quest 2 won't be on sale for much longer. Meta is clearly selling off old stock. Some SKUs have already been out of stock for a good while now.

Meta could spend the saved money from not-developing an extra headset to bring down the price for the Q3 or spend it on R&D for a Q4 ...
Quest 2 will get discontinued when this comes out and some ppl doesn't want to get a used headset.
Yeah, It doesn't make sense to me either. Especially after they just burned new Q2 users with games no longer supporting it. The objective should be to go forward and not sell people inferior tech for a slight saving that will just give those people a worse experience.
VR is not too expensive! it has only too les reasons to come there. VR needs great games and good productive software with real benefits over flat software. If we get this, people will spend 500-1000€ like we do at the moment for Notebooks etc.

not an upgrade from Q2, if you have the Q2 and upgrade to this you are wasting your money.... in the other hand, if you want a cheap introduction to VR without spending too much, this one is a good starting point
Does it have mixed reality feature? Will we play mixed reality games in this headset?
As a pcvr user this sounds like a perfect 2nd headset to get into mixed reality. By far the cheapest option for mixed reality uses. Will snag it when it drops 250-200 dollars 💸
Not interested in VR working backwards, stick to one unit and get the costs down.
this makes alot of sense just use the old hardware it is basically a refreshed quest 2
discontinue the quest pro and quest 2 and do a cpu upgrade of the quest 3 also
I hope it doesnt flop for the sake of vr, the slight improvements over quest 2 which is currently at 200$ low resolution passthrough and better chip and worse controller tracking. This upcoming headset to have a chance should probably be 200$ and still is a tough sell. I wonder if we will ever have a 100$ headset anytime soon.
I could use the Quest 1 or 2 due to the restricted IPD range, too small for me, pointless having just 3 settings for IPD distance.

I would consider getting this if it's around $299 USD (I currently don't own a VR headset). The older lenses, and slightly lower res is not a deal-breaker when you are getting color pass-through and the same processor as the Quest 3.
Passthrough isn't great tbh....I never use it for games as except in perfect lighting conditions it's too grainy and low resolution.....even in perfect lighting there's loads of distortion
Fresnell is not good.
It might do well at 200 or 250 with new vr users. Especially with the pass through and for people who wanted to try the vision pro. I'll still stick with my quest 2 till the quest 4. Don't have much free time for vr, although that may be changing soon. I'd rather spend that money upgrading my pc first. By then it will be too far along on it's life cycle. I wasn't interested in the quest 3 initially because i thought the fov bump was minimal. Turns out it's one of the best and even rivals the crystal.
I'm not so sure, a friend of mine bought the Quest 2 because it was cheap and he hasn't enjoyed it and only now has found out new games are not coming to it. Meta is just going to burn more good will with this. Stick to one model and reduce the cost by shipping more units. Going out their way to make inferior models is just dumb in a market which is demanding quality.
Quest 3s looks great I will get one but they could make it cheaper by putting a sd card slot

I would personally do it other way around. Keep the visuals (panels and lenses)on Quest3 level and loose the mixed reality stuff.

If it is for the same price as the old Quest2, then it would be very good for first timers in VR or even as a backup for your Quest3. For me personally I don't buy it. I'm happy with my Quest3 and Pico4!
My big relief is that it will have controllers. There were rumors that it wouldn't, and I feared for what that would do to VR gaming by lowering the lowest common denominator to hand tracking casual games only.

It seems that meta completely forgot the word FOV. No improvement at all in this manner. I still would buy next index over all quests, even if the only thing that changed is the panels with high resolution ones.
isnt it crazy?? its been what now...7-8 years since VR became more mainstream with psvr and Rift 1 and we STILL have the same old crappy binocular FOV nonsense. so tiresome
Arguably they also forgot comfort, vergence & depth of field and eye tracking, as well as brightness contrast and HDR, and face and body tracking.
All of which are still in the lab.
After a 10 year VR journey (starting with dk2 for me), I'm now wondering if these small incremental changes in the consumer products are enough.

@@tommagiatzis5862 hell yeah man, I use to win stuff all the time, I still have a Bluetooth controller and two awesome shirts I won, I also won several games. Even once hopped on a live stream with Seb to help show people an old chat app called vtime I believe. Those were the days and my first vr experiences.

eh lame.. It's a quest 2 with the quest 3 chip. Not really what i was hoping for unfortunately. The best part for me of the quest 3 is gone. The lenses and the better resolution/fov.

Why can't they do what Pimax did. Build a quest 3 with no chip or battery and run as pcvr only. And that would be cheap too as ur saving a ton of cash from the chipset and battery
Because by keeping the XR2 standalone chipset they force you to buy games on the Meta store instead of buying and playing PC games on Steam which takes profits away from Meta.
Because they are entirely done with the Rift series and are only focusing on all in one devices. They simply don't want to and they barely make any money from it.
