This is a really good explanation! My main issue with these crabs is that they're all captive bred - I remember researching them and it said that microcrab babies never really survive past their 9th day, and so all Thai microcrabs are sourced from one river in Thailand which to me feels super unsustainable :( If someone manages to figure out how to breed them I'd love to get them but until then maybe not.
Thank you! If someone REALLY REALLY REALLY wants these microcrabs and are willing to provide them with a good home, I have no problem with them getting them as who knows who'll have the first ever successful captive breeding and is able to spread that information around. But I think as fish keepers we have an obligation to sustainability as our beloved fish all came from those waters that would be otherwise lost.
@Le Baguette That sounds awesome! I hope you have a magnifying glass finding those microcrabs are going to be so difficult in a 75 gallon haha. Good luck!!!
Hey I know I'm 6 months late to this but I just found out about these guys because of someone's video where the crab was releasing spawn into their aquarium! Maybe since your research someones figured it out. Just thought you might want to know :)
I’ve read these are super easy to breed tho. I had a friend who has had these things for years in his tank they must be breeding. I would try keeping them alone in a proper set up, or just not keeping them.
I ordered 20 of these little guys a few months ago, and they're still alive today! I've got a small 6.7 gallon tank with a gentle flow filter. After a lot of research, I'd learned that they do really love hiding spots. So, when I was setting up my tank, I placed my dragon stones in a way that created a lot of little cavities. They seem to love it! I did have a similar experience with the tank mates, unfortunately. I had a couple of golden White Cloud Minnows in the tank, and shortly after I placed the crabs in, I noticed someone was missing a claw. Had to move the fish to another tank, but luckily, everyone seemed to recover just fine. If anyone else is planning to have these crabs, I do agree that it's worth having a tank dedicated *just* to them. I have my best luck seeing them when my lights are off in the evening, though they do sometimes just get curious and come wander around for a bit. If you're worried about not having enough room in your tank, trust me, YOU HAVE ROOM. Like I said, I got 20, and I still have a hard time finding them! Awesome little crabs though, and hardier than you'd think. I highly recommend them if you're curious!
@@GirlTalksFish hi i fed them hikari crab cuisine, frozen baby brine shrimp and they would run away with algae wafers. I kept them with my boraras, vampire shrimp and bamboo shrimp. They were really great to watch, I had been thinking of adding them again but they are hard to get.
I'm considering getting some of these for my 29 gallon. I know I'll probably never see them lmao! But I think they're neat. It's a community tank, but all nano. Ember tetras, otos, blue velvet shrimp, scuds (trying to get the scuds under control rn), and a few kinds of snails. A little concerned about the ember tetras, but the most aggression I've seen from them towards other species was a non-lethal nip on a young shrimp once. If they don't work out in this tank, maybe I'll try a species tank in the future!
My amano shrimp disappeared as soon as I came home from Aquarium Co Op and let them into the tank 😂 Someone offered to give me some of their “off” cherry red shrimp & i literally was putting on my jacket, on the way to the door when I spotted 1 amano 🤣😂 I see the cherry shrimp from time to time. I had always wondered if there were little crabs. This was so informative!
i love your page soo much Gamerswife! lol no lie i watched soo many of your videos before i set up my planted 15 gallon tank. im now sitting on 3 months fully matured now
I saw these and do have a 5 gallon shrimp and snails and endler babies grow out tank. It would be perfect except for the lid, so I'd have to get an acrylic piece to customize, so no escapees, lol. Would need a precise notch for the thermometer cord and very teeny air holes for air exchange. I'm definitely going to think about it. My issue is also the sustainability 😢
you should definitely get a small tank with a colony of the spider crabs. i have a couple in a small tank with green jade shrimp and they really only come out at night i see them every night a little while after u turn on the red light wondering around the bottom or up a plant.

Hello Irene! I love this video, very informative on these little shy creatures They! They are so cute and adorable! I never heard of them. Could I have them with my betta in their own ten gallon tanks?
It is good hearing from you Irene! I know! Lol Maybe I would try and put five in one of my ten gallon tank with one of my calmer betta and otocinclus catfish.
Try micro crabs, scuds, daphnia, infusoria, seed shrimps, in a community tank , all of them will balance each other out, I do feed them with chick pea, green pea powder and yeast, spirulina and always keep a peace of cudde bone "for calcium". With this combo I get free food my my other fish on a daily base.
I neeeeeed help!!! I recently got plants from the lake, and I was aware there was gonna be little animals, I WASNT AWARE THERE WAS GONNA BE LEECHES! Now I have this smallish leech in my tank WITH EGGS WTH!!! Luckily I have no fish since it's just cycling! I feel bad killing it but I still don't feel comfortable with it :( Any ideas to get rid of it?
We had about 15 in our main tank then transferred them over to a smaller one. Caught as many as we could. Five months later I found one in the main tank hiding in a driftwood crevice. It only came out to float its eggs into the water. Caught it and moved it over but sadly it passed away in the new tank.
Ive had these guys a couple years. (Footage on my youtube & insta @LaPReptiles) Theyre awesome. I have a 5.5g tank for about 30 of them, which is perfect size to see them while allowing them tons of hiding space. Mine have escaped multiple times and ended up in my tetra tank next to it. Also they attacked my mystery snails to the point i had to seperate them. They eat my bladder snails too, but those were pests that snuck in on an onion. Genuinely awesome pets to have though
I love when you share your experiences!! I absolutely love these little guys...But I don't know enough about them to try them yet.. maybe someday when I have a place I can dedicate to them only! They are so fascinating an interesting... I really appreciate you sharing this with us and I hope you have a fabulous weekend Irene! 👍♥️🌱🦀🌿🙏
I found a micro crab after a year. I didn’t buy it, it came in on the plants (the only reasoning I can think of) it’s quite big now (2inches long including legs) so I’m not sure if it’s a micro crab? But has hairy legs and must be fully aquatic. It tried eating my new mystery snail, but I rescued it in time. Even though I had a massive mystery snail in there since the tank setup a year ago. I’ll just have to wait till it’s girth gets a little bigger I suppose
I found them interesting as well but have no idea how hard they are to keep. Maybe try asking Bob of Steenfott Aquatics because I believe he's kept them before.
I had a similar experience with dwarf crayfish - they are awesome for helping to clean up, and fun to watch when they come out. I put one in each of my heavily planted nano tanks, which also have small inhabitants like Endlers. All the tanks also have cherry shrimp and Amano shrimp, so I make sure I have accommodating Kh and Gh levels. Half of the crayfish did a disappearing act, like your own little crustaceans did. I figured some of the crayfish were just shy and preferred to hide under things, like crayfish in the wild do. And like yourself, I rescaped a couple of tanks and found no trace of the ones in those tanks. The tanks were well sealed, noway for them to crawl out, either... so don't know what happened... unless a pack of shrimp ganged up on them? I have seen my Amano shrimp go after fish fry... but find it hard to believe that they would tackle something wielding pincers... lol...
I have owned 8 dwarf crayfish and I have only seen two die and I have no idea what happened to the others. I have a feeling they escaped as one of the two tanks didn't have a lid but still hoping I will see one again one day.
I know those claws are tiny, but I've seen crawfish snip plants, always makes me nervous. I think my pentazonas would love those microcrabs, for dinner. I'm going to try daphnia. I'm going to put some out back in some natural green water and hope i can get them to live in my tank long enough to be beneficial before the pentazonas and yoyos eat them.
Can i keep them with turtles? I want to have filters feeders in my tank because my turtles are very messy eaters and the left other food gets everywhere. Anything i can with them to help with this that'll eat the left overs. Im leading to cherry shrimp and ghost but i wanna know if it's a good idea
