Fun fact! Bethesda crew went to Norway for inspiration. The temple of Mara for instance is Sogndal stavkirke (Sogndal stave church) ,and the Jorvaskr is Lillehammer's Viking skipet (The viking ship). Solitude where the Empire is asembled, actualy has the Danish flag on it behind the wolf. And they fights against Windhelm: Capital of the Stormcloacks with Swedish colors. Now what did Denmark and Sweden fight over for many years and wars? Norway!! And what does the Empire and the Stormcloacks fight over? Skyrim!! Skyrim is infact a Norway lookalike. With both immigration issues and a history of bloodshed, legends and myths about dragons and gods. This is worth knowing guys! Have a great day :) -A Nord
I absolutely love learning about Norse culture and history as well its nations. Seeing all of these inspirations that Bethesda got from Norway for one of my all time favorite video games really makes me appreciate both the nations and the game even more.
Skyrim is inspired by Norway. There is a easter egg of the three goats who crossed the brigde and got stopped by a troll. TRhat tale is written by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen. He's on the 50 bill in Norway.
No... Arngeir is a typical Norwegian name.... Alvor osv. And there is trolls and even referanses to the three billy goat fairly tale. I mean, as a Norwegian I can see many easter eggs like the elfin riverwood, "Faendal" which means Fuckdale in Norwegian.
But then again there are a lot of swedish references too, and tbh I think it's just roughly inspired by all of the nordic countries at some parts. The montains and fjords of norway, the geysers of iceland and lappland of finland, sweden and norway. Swamps and cliffs, waterfalls and open land. For example Ivarstead is to me a reference to sweden and our typical Halmstad, Filipstad, Kristianstad, Strömstad and so on. I just think it's fair to say that there's no need to argue, I think they just got inspiration from all of us (apart from maybe denmark, can't find anything that's remotely danish tbh)
One thing I really love about Skyrim is the photorealism it can have at times. Sure, it's a fantasy province taking place on a fantasy continent on a fantasy planet in a fantasy realm , but the sheer amount of detail and effort that has been put into the game to not only make it look authentic, but also feel authentic is just astounding. At some points in my playthroughs, I often stop and just admire the scenery and take everything in. Even today, six years after the game's release, it is still gorgeous to say the least.
So it goes like this. Skyrim = Norway Cyrodiil = Italy Morrowind = Iran Hammerfell = India and Saudi Arabia Black Marsh = Brazil Valenwood = DR Congo (?)
Skyrim = Norway/Sweden Cyrodiil = Italy/Roman Empire Morrowind = Iran Hammerfell = Saudi Arabia/North Africa Black Marsh = Brazil High Rock = England and France Valenwood = Canada/USA (Native American) Elsweyr = India/Persia Summerset Isles = Generic Tolkien-esque high fantasy elvish ideal that everyone always associates elves with. I wanna say that there might be some ancient Greekish ideals within it too Akavir = China/Japan/Korea. That's where all the Blades equipment comes from
Black Marsh = Mexico (Yucatan peninsula)/ Guatemala considering some art showing that its territory is comprised of lush rainforests and that they live in stone cities with stepped pyramids, which look very similar to Mayan architecture.
Absolutely awesome. Skyrim was one of the greatest games I've ever played, especially in terms of the graphics in the game. Some of the scenes in that game could pass for real-life photos. And very clever of you to compare Skyrim with actual scenes of Norway; some of the scenes are strikingly similar. Also, I'm generally very interested in Scandinavian culture and religion, and I think this game captures at least the former of these really well.
00:19 with that music gave me chills. If only that music while playing Skyrim played more often. The sound design in skyrim is really hit or miss because sometimes sounds overlap eachother badly and combat music doesn't start or end reliably. Also I wish the plains surrounding Whiterun were super green like in the concept art. The orange/beige vegetation around whiterun makes it look much more bland and boring imo.
MainstreamPoPsucks3 u can impossibly live in northern norway dude, HALF of the year is winter were i live, the rest is spring, summer and autumn, during winter up here it's dark when we go to school, and dark again hours before it's over, and auroras is seen so often they get boring. + it's cold, but what kinda Norwegian gives a f*** about that
Thank you for all the compliments! I have seen many pictures from Canada, and Canada is a country full of amazing nature, that's for sure. :) When it comes to climate... yes, it might be a bit warmer here some places... But, it is raining or snowing all the time :p
@GoldenNorway1 You're absolutely right. It's also shaped like Iceland, which is my homeland. Scandinavia is just simply a beautiful land, and so is Skyrim. I would have liked to see a volcano in the game though... but still. You're spot on.
In ancient times the amount of bloodshed in Norway must have left behind a sort of dark and dreary feeling in this modern age especially if you go in the wilderness alone. At least if I was there I'd feel eerily depressed with the thought of being around an ancient environment
I agree this feels more than Norway than anything else. Since only 25% of all Swedes live north of Uppsala we don't think of Sweden as a cold country with snowy mountains and boreal forest or frozen ground. But at least you have to agree with me when I say Solitude and Whiterun feels more Danish or even Swedish than Norwegian. I love Norwegian nature, but Oslo isn't much of a city compared to Cph or Sthlm. But all the names are so old school Scandinavian! Really funny for a Swede to hear.
The Norse held sway throughout the Hebrides from the 9th century until after the Treaty of Perth in 1266. However, apart from placenames, little remains of their presence on Skye in the written or archaeological record...
It's called "Sverd i fjell" (Swords in Mountain). It's a monument outside Stavanger from '83 to commemorate the Battle of Hafrsfjord (872) when King Fairhair gathered Norway under one flag.
theres an island in scotland called skye or isle of skye which interestingly enough resembles skyrim a LOT in its geography. theres another connection as well, i quote from wikipedia now:
there is a little bit of inspiration from Britain to because of all of the standing stone in reel life thought that when you touched them you get magical power. just like the power stones in the game.
Skyrim and the Nords are inspired by and are supposed to look like Nordic lands and Nordic culture and Skyrim does look like Nordic lands BUT much of the landscape appears to have been based on the USA (if that makes sense). I mean I think they did look at places like Norway and fine tune it to seem Nordic but check out the first minute or so of National Parks of North America IMAX HD by husky40 (there are loads of examples in this video but a really stunning one is between m3:s20 - m3:s47) Grand Teton looks like The Rift for example. My audio tip is press play above and then watch the first minute of the National Parks video muted.
Robbie Wallace It's based off of Norway. Everything is. Their cultures, names (places and people) nature, architecture, etcetera: they're all very similar to Norway in the Middle Ages.
I would say that Skyrim is mainly based on Norway. Being swedish, the only places I can relate to are Falkreath and the Rift. Yeah we do got mountains, but no swedes would relate to them since they are so far north and no one barely lives there. Otherwise Skyrim is very based on the misconception that Scandinavia got some kind of polar climate.
And I believe the imperials were Swedish/Danish, because Norway had a civil war against both countries in order to become independent. Plus, Jarls were actual Viking kings.
Apart from the name "Skye" itself, all pre-Norse placenames seem to have been obliterated by the Scandinavian settlers.[52] Viking heritage is claimed by Clan MacLeod and Norse tradition is celebrated in the winter fire festival at Dunvegan, during which a replica Viking long boat is set alight.[53]
The choice is between Iceland Sweden and Norway. Inspiration comes from all 3 but as far as landscape goes its Norway all the way. I'm Norwegian (obviously) and the visuals is a combination of central and northern Norway.
From a Swede: I think that Skyrim is based on Norway AND Sweden. but not the other scandinavian countries. Like, the names Torbjörn, Sven etc. Which are both norwegian and swedish names. I think all the Holds represent different landscapes in Sweden and Norway. Whiterun Hold repressenting flat-fell landscapes like Dundret (Sweden). The northern Holds of Skyrim (The Pale, Winterhold Hold etc.) Have more mountains which resembles Norway more. The (leaf-forest??) of The Rift resembles the......
That's your opinion. I don't know where you're from, and that doesn't matter. And to all others that comes with Denmark and Sweden... Do they have mountains? ..Eh...no. However, the culture is also from the rest of Scandinavia. By the way, thanks for the view from your side!
Norway isn't only Mountains my friend, Norway has large flat areas, and flat areas with dense forrests Norway is the tallest country in Europe witch means big variations :) West= Fjords and plateaus + Very flat areas (search up Jæren/joeren East= not so many mountains, forrests larger than some countries. North= Some big areas are totaly bare with no trees or nothing and looks pretty much as Iceland
Skyrim is actually based on Norway, it is not just a theory. The producers has absolutely based it on Norwegian nature, culture and animals. -And of course the northern lights we`re so fameous for. Norway is the country that has most auroras (northern lights) in the whole world, and they`re often seen every night over the spiky mountains in Lofoten, northern Norway. I`m proud of beeing Norwegian. Not only the richest country in the world, but also the most beautiful, says National Geo.
@TheSuuio Denmark and sweden are fine I think? I don't like the way denmark pronounce their language but that's just my opinion but I've noticed it's alot of argue between sweden and finland.
There are some of the places you won't find in Norway though. The places with the geysers is more like iceland, The places with icebergs is more like Greenland, the marsh areas is more like Denmark
Sweden have mountains. Denmark itself doesn't really have mountains but is quite hilly. Faroe island which is part of Denmark do have mountains and is as beautiful as Norway
@LinniFight Norway is the only country in Scandinavia that has mountains, fjords AND forests. Sweden mostly just has forests... And Denmark got neither.
I visited the landmark last summer. It's not very far from the city "Stavanger". Many centuries ago, there was a huge battle on sea and on land. @LinniFight Norway is the only country in Scandinavia that has mountains, fjords AND forests. Sweden mostly just has forests... And Denmark got neither. So Norway rules ;D
Norway is truly the most prettiest place on Earth.
You got that right!!!
You're god damn right.
Still impressed this comment still gets likes to this day, and it's two years ago since I posted this comment. I still love Skyrim with all my heart.
It's fucking eye candy, man. But there is a major downside... Food and alcohol costs a shit ton... Fuel too. Other than that it's pretty good!
And i live there
Fun fact! Bethesda crew went to Norway for inspiration. The temple of Mara for instance is Sogndal stavkirke (Sogndal stave church) ,and the Jorvaskr is Lillehammer's Viking skipet (The viking ship).

This is worth knowing guys!
Have a great day :)

Aye, I wish for a simple life too :(

I absolutely love learning about Norse culture and history as well its nations. Seeing all of these inspirations that Bethesda got from Norway for one of my all time favorite video games really makes me appreciate both the nations and the game even more.
Well fuck, now it looks like I have to get my sword, my bow and a one way plane ticket.
I dident know i was living in skyrim
same
Skyrim is Eastern Ireland
Yuri Deniçyuk no it isn’t
Skyrim is inspired by Norway. There is a easter egg of the three goats who crossed the brigde and got stopped by a troll. TRhat tale is written by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen. He's on the 50 bill in Norway.
He didnt write it he just wrote it down. most norwegian fairytales had been around for hundreds of years before them.
You get the point :)
but you don have those forests in iceland
No... Arngeir is a typical Norwegian name.... Alvor osv. And there is trolls and even referanses to the three billy goat fairly tale. I mean, as a Norwegian I can see many easter eggs like the elfin riverwood, "Faendal" which means Fuckdale in Norwegian.

OK Guys let's all forget about Skyrim... JUST LOOK AT HIGH ROCK IT HAS ALMOST THE SAME SHAPE AS SCANDINAVIA :D
Prachov Rocks,Czech = Path to High Hrothgar
Jontheboy High Rock has always reminded me of Lofoten in Northen Norway tbh...
And Hamerfell is shaped like Weatern Europe you can Clearly see Italy
The cultures don’t match... Skyrims culture is based on ancient Scandinavian culture
One thing I really love about Skyrim is the photorealism it can have at times. Amen brother
which one is skyrim and which is norway?
exactly
I watched this video again a year later, today, and saw this comment and almost replied with "exactly" until I saw that I already did
Icelandic and Faroese is just branches of the Norwegian culture.
When i would turn 40 i would come here and live here. I would use all my life savings. 😂
So it goes like this.
Skyrim = Norway
Cyrodiil = Italy
Morrowind = Iran
Hammerfell = India and Saudi Arabia
Black Marsh = Brazil
Valenwood = DR Congo (?)
+Dramatic Dolfy High Rock = England
+Lou
Yep cuz, Bretons. Yes.
Skyrim = Norway/Sweden
Cyrodiil = Italy/Roman Empire
Morrowind = Iran
Hammerfell = Saudi Arabia/North Africa
Black Marsh = Brazil
High Rock = England and France
Valenwood = Canada/USA (Native American)
Elsweyr = India/Persia
Summerset Isles = Generic Tolkien-esque high fantasy elvish ideal that everyone always associates elves with. I wanna say that there might be some ancient Greekish ideals within it too
Akavir = China/Japan/Korea. That's where all the Blades equipment comes from

I love my country!
Yeah im definitely moving to norway
thanks for this video, i like this concept, the landscape and the country is so beautiful, thanks

This is a beautiful video. Thank you for this!!
Skyrim = Norway. Frozen = Norway. Therefore Skyrim = more violent version of Frozen.
MainstreamPoPsucks3 In Frozen Norway froze over in the Summer because of Elsa... did you not watch the movie? Summer was warm in the movie.
MainstreamPoPsucks3 u can impossibly live in northern norway dude, HALF of the year is winter were i live, the rest is spring, summer and autumn, during winter up here it's dark when we go to school, and dark again hours before it's over, and auroras is seen so often they get boring. + it's cold, but what kinda Norwegian gives a f*** about that
MainstreamPoPsucks3 I apologize if my comment was dumb.
+TheEliteSquirrel Its not dumb its just niet true... (Niet = noy = not = no. and i russian its like this: Csgo?
lol
Such an incredible looking place, .. I always thought certain pictures of Svalbard look to have inspired places in Skyrim.
Thank you for all the compliments! I have seen many pictures from Canada, and Canada is a country full of amazing nature, that's for sure. :)
When it comes to climate... yes, it might be a bit warmer here some places... But, it is raining or snowing all the time :p
0:50 dovrefjell nationalpark .... such a beautiful place ...thats why i love norway so much
I've lived in America my whole life, and may not be pure Norwiegen, but I have to say I really do want to visit my home.
@GoldenNorway1 You're absolutely right. It's also shaped like Iceland, which is my homeland. Scandinavia is just simply a beautiful land, and so is Skyrim. I would have liked to see a volcano in the game though... but still. You're spot on.

Hail to Norway and it's black metal
Dude it dont look much same but if you have a camera in the viking age, Norway would look more like skyrim.

I agree that much of it is based on other Nordic lands as well, such as Iceland. But the mountains that rules Skyrim, are only found in Norway.
I'm a proud norwegian
I always play Nord because I'm Norwegian. I just like the Viking-ish look of them and it makes me feel kinda proud. xD
there is a little bit of inspiration from Britain to because of all of the standing stone in reel life thought that when you touched them you get magical power. just like the power stones in the game.
It reminds me of northern Norway where I lived, but also Scotland and even Wales.
You are lucky to live there friend.
The largest sword (To the left) represents Harald Fairhair who won the battle, the two other is the kings who lost.
2:24 idk, i dont think the horses in skyrim are though, the run out of stamina too freqently and they are slower than my grandma...
I’m a Norwegian that never have played Skyrim. I guess I should give it a go 🇳🇴

i hate it when i am driving home from work in norway and th damn giants makes a traffic jam, and starts beating up my car

@MrBoringxD My, my. Stop fighting over such small things. Nord means north in not only Norwegian. Finished. :)
The choice is between Iceland Sweden and Norway. Inspiration comes from all 3 but as far as landscape goes its Norway all the way. I'm Norwegian (obviously) and the visuals is a combination of central and northern Norway.
You deserve more views.
Bethesda needs to make a Skyrim the movie here in Norway
@OkAyAtGaMiN You know you have a lot of volcanic areas south of WIndhelm in Eastmarch, with alot of hot springs, geysirs and stuff?
Beautiful, Skyrim and Norway =)

Norwegian spiders are smaller. Nice vid.

Norway should build a shine to Azura , than it truly would be like the Game
My grandpa is from Norway and this is how he described it
When asked to describe Norway he said: "Fus Ro Dah!"
does anyone know the story behind the 3 swords @ 1:40?
I visited the landmark last summer. It's not very far from the city "Stavanger".
Many centuries ago, there was a huge battle on sea and on land. King "Harald Haarfagre" fought with his army so they could take Norway's western part. Norwegian myself. Love the stories :)
+MikMar TheGamer thanks man. :D Can't wait to become an adventurer in your country.
Your welcome. :D
Was it in that battle that Talos became famous?
Evilsamar Why are you bringing Talos here?
I would say Skyrim looks more like Iceland, although they're very similar. Also, I'm pretty sure Skyrim is based on Scandinavia as a whole. The shape of the country is definitely based on Iceland though.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read the description.
Iceland is really pretty but it is almost only wast plains of lava landskape.
Skyrim there is treez, norway there is treez, iceland nope :)
Where are the Stormcloaks though?
Dat distorted ass music tho holy fucc
Skyrim has a lot of viking feel to it, not just Norway, but scandinavia in general.
The way you wrote it made me misunderstand it. You don't need to be rude.
skyrim was so fun.. so atmospheric.
I always thought it was based on Iceland, lol. Guess I was wrong. Norway is beautiful, by the way!
I concur!
@MrDarrylR Hehhh, thanks for clearing that up for me. Coming from Norway myself I didn't know that. *cough* ;)
What is the species name of the Rabbit
Richest county is the US in treasury bills but in money in general it's quater
Thats true, but you took that land long ago and it is more like around østersund, åre ;P
It is acually Norwegian..But we got the mountains
Wait does that mean Shetland Islands are kind in skyrim cause Shetland was part of norway or am i just talking shit?
trust me any land can seem epic
0:53 where is that?
I feel like it could be somewhere on Jotunheimen
@LinniFight Norway is the only country in Scandinavia that has mountains, fjords AND forests. Sweden mostly just has forests... And Denmark got neither. So Norway rules ;D
whats this soundtrack called
well I see no high mountains in Sweden as in norway...
@Anthraxinternational Oh no, you wouldn't.
Norway sweden and iceland.
it wasnt based on specifically NORWAY. it was based on whole scandinavia
@SwedishBastardsYou're the disliker, I see. Would you like to give me a good detailed argument why you think this is "bad"?
Yes but Sweden does have mountains, I am currently in Svalbard and right now I'd rather say this is skyrim xD
thats pretty cool
the place that is most similliar to skyrim are tatry mountains in poland
Any mountain can look like Skyrim. We talk about culture here!
+John Starling bro... then why did the skyrim makers come to norway for inspiration?... wait i think that was frozen... Maybe both
