Especially seawater, because at sea level the air is so fucking thick that to those of us who belong to the noble tribe of the Heavily Armed and Two-Legged Chamois, it always feels like you're breathing bloody maple syrup. In addition, our climbing equipment also isn't exactly what you would call seaworthy, mainly because inflatable carabiners are still in a very early testing stage, ice picks and crampons aren't worth a fucking damn if water's not in its solid phase - and swimming with 200 ft of dynamic rope strapped to the back of your tactical vest is just such a drag, you know.

went through the ice once last year, its amazing how quickly everything happens, especially if you're not expecting it. breath being knocked out of your chest like getting hit by a baseball bat, survival instinct sets in super fast! told my friend to get away from me since the ice obviously was unstable where i was. my first try to get up caused me to crash through the ice again and I was forced to take a deep breath and calm my self down, by that time I couldn't feel my legs or feet, was pretty scary. used my upper body to drag my ass up on the ice. luckily my rucksack was watertight so it acted like a lifejacket + the puffy jacket i had in it was dry so the 5 mile hike home wasn't to bad. Once you've been in that situation you really understand why you should take slow breaths and try not to panic.
John Doe that applies to everything, keep calm is key. better judgment and clearer decision making and allows you to be more in touch with what's going on around you
It's a lot funnier when they have to ask for permission to get up while in the water. In my platoon we had to say "Sergeant, Recruit Olsen asking for permission to get up". Thing is, you'll choke on the sentence because it's so cold, you have to take deep breaths before being able to say it properly.
Why wouldn't he have? It's exactly the same experience I have in the Swedish marines. All recruits had to jump in, swim from one side to the other and back, then stop and ask for permission before getting up. The point of the exercise is to learn to be calm and control your breathing after the initial shock of goin in. If you're trying to pull yourself up without being calm in a real scenario you'll likely break the thin ice and have a hard time getting up. Lesser chance of survival. I don't like that they're holding on to the ice while going in in the clip since it'd break in a real scenario
MiroVizen we did it in school, had to say its "warm and i like being here" it wasnt that bad i jumped with a friend and we "chilled" for like 45sec before our legs started numbing and we said fuck it.

It makes a HUGE difference if you get your head below the water or not. I've done both. If you get your head below, it feels like the cold zaps your brain imo.
Feels like 100 times worse
Weird. I feel like if i get my head under it kind of makes the cold not as noticeable as if im just dipping my upper body. Its like the second i get my head under my body gets more used to the cold.
maestr Rogu then water water you got into wasn’t cold enough.

So _that's_ why "Marine" is an acronym for "My Arse Rides In Navy Equipment"? ;-)
Anyways: same here. I'm a former NCO who served in a Gebirgsjäger battalion (similar to the 10th Mountain in Fort Drum) of the Austrian Army ("Army" being the acronym for "Armed, Raucous and Misguided Yokels", as you might know) back in the 1990ies, and what can I say?
We Mountaineers too aren't too fond of being in water either.

The title Marine doesn't make you inherently tougher in climate conditions
Indeed it does not, but it does imply you have top quality physical condition. I'm no expert but I think @Vrijman's got a point.
Shieldwolf Miniatures top quality physical condition suggest a higher muscle to fat ratio than most fat being insulation to help keep someone warm so really although they might be able to handle pain better they should theoretically succumb to hypothermia faster

went through the ice once last year, its amazing how quickly everything happens, especially if you're not expecting it. breath being knocked out of your chest like getting hit by a baseball bat, survival instinct sets in super fast! told my friend to get away from me since the ice obviously was unstable where i was. my first try to get up caused me to crash through the ice again and I was forced to take a deep breath and calm my self down, by that time I couldn't feel my legs or feet, was pretty scary. used my upper body to drag my ass up on the ice. luckily my rucksack was watertight so it acted like a lifejacket + the puffy jacket i had in it was dry so the 5 mile hike home wasn't to bad.
Once you've been in that situation you really understand why you should take slow breaths and try not to panic.
How did it happen? That's a very interesting story, glad you're okay.

Normal people do this, you see grannies in swimsuits doing the ice swim lmao
It's a lot funnier when they have to ask for permission to get up while in the water. In my platoon we had to say "Sergeant, Recruit Olsen asking for permission to get up". Thing is, you'll choke on the sentence because it's so cold, you have to take deep breaths before being able to say it properly.
SNIk1d tellie you didnt do that as a recruit
