How to Make Opal Arrowhead ... IF YOU DARE!

- As requested, but against my own advice, I made this video about how to make an opal arrowhead. You have to know some flintknapping to do it, but ..........it's in the video. You really don't want to do this ...........really!

How can anyone give you a thumbs down? I love your sense of humor and the fact you’re so generous with your vast knowledge.
Probably because the first minute was just a rant on why other people don’t like to make arrowheads. Kind of redundant. If they’re here they’re interested and don’t really care to hear about the people that aren’t because they’re here to watch what him show them not to hear him bitch about people that never got into Flint napping
And then, if we’re gonna be honest, I’ve been getting into Flint napping and watching a lot of videos. And he really didn’t even explain how to do it. There’s a lot that he left out. Not placing above the middle point when you’re trying to Flint downwards or the angle that you’re doing it can shoot it out the backside or all these other things that I’ve been warned about another videos and not in this one. This is more of video, showing him doing it, not showing us how to do it. And never told us anything about the nature of the rock. Andy never refined the arrowhead. It’s like it’s not even finished. He never put the serrations on it or anything. Oh and also didn’t bring up platforms or ever set on it for that matter. Which helps people get bites and be more accurate with the precise pressure flaking needed to do the final part. And then another thing at the end, he talks about the flakes going about to the middle. When most other people that are teaching people teach you how to make those flakes go as far across as you want whether it’s across the whole face of it if it’s a small enough piece or halfway and then you come from the other half on the other side. I get why he has had some backlash in these comments. Go grab a piece of opal and only use this information and see if you can get a finished product without messing up.
I really enjoyed this video. As a kid I always wanted to learn flint knapping, maybe it's not too late. You have a wonderful imagination, that, and a sense of wonder keep you young at heart. Looking forward to your next post.

I've got a few pesky rainbow unicorns running around the back paddock I need to get rid of, some opal arrow heads would do the job nicely I think.
We could find arrow heads when the lakes would recede through drought here in South Carolina. My dad loved walking for hours until dark. I loved finding history like this.
Such a sassy video. Love it as always. I found an arrow head once when I went camping as a child. I could not be convinced that some tourist bought one of them from a nearby giftshop and then lost it. But of course, that was the case. It all went full circle when I lost it before the trip was done! Maybe one day I'll try and make my own, even if it's probably a bad idea :)
Opal is one ithe unique and wonderful natural gift within the earth. No doubt!!
This is an amazing skill which i'm sure you make look much easier than it is. Its always a treat when i wake up to a notification that a new video from you is up. Your depth of knowledge seems to know no bounds and I truly hope the younger generation is paying attention.

I love it! That's a awesome video, I had found a knife in Arkansas a few years back, when I found it, this young fellow I met, through a friend told him about the knife I found, and he wanted it bad. But instead of giving him the stone knife, I let him look at it, because he napps stones to sell, but I found the real McCoy. He said it's really valuable, but I'm gunna hold on to it for awhile. I tried to napp but since my accident at work, my hands won't let me. But.I admire all the ones you showed in a video. You have real talent when it comes to working stones and gemstones. I hope I'm as good as you one day. But I'm really good at catching big catfish. I hope you have a great day.
Arrow... and thank you for the fine video. As someone who uses their hands for music, I don't think I'll ever get into flint knapping, but the process was fascinating!

Arrow. The form is really appealing made in opal and obsidian. Actually tried some flintknapping as a boy since flint was plentyful in the area I grew up in. I even found a couple of smaller neolithic flint axes on my childhood adventures in the fields of southern Sweden. 😀

Im happy that you went as in depth that you did in this video about flintknapping, thank you! I have been snapping for about a year now and have used everything from indirect percussion to prismatic flaking. Been working nothing but petrified wood because it is the only thing I can get here in Colorado locally, and have tried opal only once, and that was last week actually. It was common potch that was casted through grainy petrified wood but man did it come out amazing when it was done.
The way you explain this stuff is spot on and very accurate, Thanks for making this video, a lot more people that I have met have wanted to start, have started, but end up cutting themselves and stop. Either that or they can't get the right angle, its hard to explain how to get it right. Great vid

Came to this video to see if there was any special information you needed about Opal. Is it harder than normal to nap? Got a bunch of questions that were never answered.
I've been subbed to your channel for about a year now, and I've recently been trying to learn to knap arrowheads. I've watched hundreds of videos from channels dedicated to flint knapping and none of them ever explained the hertzian cone in a way like you did. I feel confident I can apply it to my percussion flaking with how you explained and demonstrated.
Even tho I've been subscribed for a year or so I guess UA-cam algorithm decided to show this video to me now since I've been searching similar things.

Those turned out really nice. I have tried flint knapping but am not very good at it. I have a lot of flint in the yard that I try it on.
I have been knapping 30 years and just last year made a nice Elko Point from Cobber Pedy precious opal. One of my favorite points ever. Nice video.

Outstanding brother. One of my favorite videos. I might have told you that I tried flint knapping once. After fifteen seconds I hit my thumb knuckle so hard I about passed out out. And that was that, haven’t tried it since. The opal arrowheads might be the coolest thing I’ve seen in a loooong time. 👍🇺🇸

This is such a brilliant and informative video, thank you! As far as the flint knapping tools go, I’m Native American and every summer we teach our youth our traditional crafts and way of life and when we break off pieces from the obsidian chunks we use heavy stones, your theory is absolutely correct! Then for the flaking that’s when we use the deer antler like you were saying. Thanks again for the video, I wish you all the best!
@@PulitzerOpal It has quite a bit. One of my best friends has been flint knapping for over 30 years and has a masters degree in experimental archeology specializing in stone tools. The antler billet theory was displaced for hammer stones and wood billet theory. Lots of areas are finding wood remnants on debitage from percussion flaking. Here in CO, nice hard round stones are plentiful for hammer stones. Other places, they can be really tough to find. Those areas are where they seem to find the most debitage with wood remnants in the impact shelfs. I love to talk about this stuff. I absolutely have zero skill to flintknapp, tried it multiple times, and it's beyond me. LOL, when I saw the baskets of Georgetown in the video, I was like, "I bet he knows Kiernan."

Thank you Colonel. I love the arrowheads that you make. Be they flint, opal, obsidian, whatever. Although I have lived in Liverpool for 20 years I originally come from Sussex. There's an awful lot of flint there. I used to try and make arrows with the flint when I was a kid. Sliced myself open quite a lot and I never did manage to make an arrow. Just watched your video on how to make the arrowheads. Love the way you say wanker.😲😁❤️

I've never been interested in arrowheads and I never heard of Flint knapping but somehow I couldn't turn it off. Those arrowheads are truly beautiful and I love to see what went into making them it is an amazing process. What a beautiful talent you have thank you so much for sharing it!

Great word, I often use it as an insult, occasionally as a term of endearment with someone (male) I haven't seen in many years but still care a lot about.

Im glad that you made the video. and it was detailed and informative so, thank you! I have been curious about how its done everytime i watch a video of a rock hounder that comes across an obviously worked piece of obsidian or jasper.
We lived in Virginia when I was child for a few years. The place our Dad tilled up for a garden was full of arrowheads. I loved going out and hunting for them. Then I decided I wanted to make my own. I actually got pretty good at it. I was 5 when I started and by 7 I could make ones that would fool my Dad. lol I think children sometimes have more of innate way of doing things that we lose as we get older. I tried again in my 20's and couldn't believe how hard it was to get the points just right lol. I need try and see if my old age will help :)

I want to flint knap! I have flint from our South Australian beach, so please, Yes, do show me how to begin because after seeing your flint arrowheads and then opal ones I was instantly in love with the idea of trying to make one....and I know I have no skills at it but I am an artist so am already there in my mind! I love both opal arrowheads but would choose the white one with the angled colour bars...lovely!
You might like to try on a more available and easier to work with substance the bottom of a bottle. There are some good UA-cam videos that show how you can detach the bottom of a bottle with a certain weight of nail using the head down at the bottom and shaking the bottle up and down. Make sure you protect your eyes and fingers from flying glass shards or Rock shards.
@@k8eekatt Thanks, I will think about that. I knapped some flint this morning for the first time, off a very large piece and was successful at getting some nice largish chips. I have a number of aboriginal stones for hitting the flint with at the correct angle, as per this video, and I am pretty pleased with the results! Like I mentioned, I am an artist and have excellent hand-eye skills. I want to make an arrowhead and I think I shall with some practice. I have been collecting flint for 10 years where I live and am rapt that I can learn to work it!

They are so lovely and I think the time involved is amazing. One of the objects was an arrow straightener. It was made a very hard rock and immaculately fashioned. Good luck have fun!
@@k8eekatt Absolutely, I have the greatest respect for the early aboriginals when I find some of their arrow heads and even grinding stones. I used to live in the outback for 6 years and I found so many items in dry riverbeds etc.

...and hey, you're the only knapper I've seen so far. P.s. i might get into making my own obsidian using a fresnel lens, I'll tell you if it's good quality 😁
@@PulitzerOpal yes i think so too! Im going to try for other types if the regular rhyolite black obsidian works well. I guess you could call it just making glass, but it'll be fun to try none the less

Like always I must put every food or drink that I would have and go to toilet for a pee because I always laugh very generously. And some times it finishes with some gross side effects ha ha! @@PulitzerOpal since I was a little girl I used to play with flint trying to shape it and it was fun because we had plenty of flint everywhere (Poland = home of neanderthals). We often finished with smashed fingers or with cuts so it was always on bigger pieces than an arrowhead. Yours it's another level of technicity, we can see years of practice in Your steady movements. And watching You hit those opals was really stressful, but seeing how perfectly they finished was unbelievable! Your collection of arrowheads is fantastic! Can't wait to see how the clam has turned out 😊 the grey color is really nice. We are safe, thank You, and hope that You and Your beloved ones are well too. I tried knapping one summer when I got a hold of some glass butte obsidian, but gave it up just as quickly as I became interested in it. I'm kind of torn when watching it done with opal though. On the one hand, it makes a beautiful arrow; on the other, it feels like you flake away perfectly good opal to get there.
I wanted to watch this one again to see that lovely black obsidian arrow head😉😊..

You might consider some nylon thread wrapped over the tool in place of the other if you like that type of grip. Beautiful work as always. Just running through old videos.
