- All credit to Gary Numan, thank you Gary! Such a great and influential song, plus it's fun to play :-). He has a HUGE catalog I highly recommend exploring. I'm partial to his early stuff, but there are some great songs spread out across his 20+ albums.
I've loved this song for years, I wish we played it in our band. It's a fun one to learn to play keys on. Only tricky part is the bridge, which is just a pretty quick progression built around fifths, and you can get lost fairly easily. That said, I made a few bad notes in this recording, but overall I liked it enough to stick with it.
I'm using a stock sound from the Korg Triton -- Program B080, Mega Big Synth. Seems pretty fitting :-) I cut some high end off of it, otherwise its stock.
Thanks for watching and take care. More songs to follow that I grew up loving, or my band plays, or I learned to play bass and keys with... or all 3 :-)
That song never ages, in my ears it just keeps getting better.
Amen!
Couldn't agree more, just gets better and better and better!
I watch the music video on a daily basis!
AFE but a cool remix:

Love it. After 40 years it’s still fresh and a bit futuristic. Plus Gary is still doing it.
What a talent he still is. Nicest person also.
Their are moments in music that set a milestone , this was one of them, just absaloughtly classic ❤👌
100% agree!
@@galtem OMD when they first started they were a bit short of money and transport, Gary helped them out , he didnt have to do it , but he realised their talent , very generous person Gary Numan. ps. Have you ever done (Down in the park on keyboards), thats great as well.
@@soniaellis163 No, never tried it, but I agree its a great song -- I like his first 3 albums a lot and many other songs throughout the rest of his catalog.
The mighty Triton does a good job here, and the player too!
Thank you! :-)
Loops in my head all day.
This is excellent, many thanks for posting. I loved this song back in 1979. I was 10-years-old. It's as good as ever.
Ahrrrr my youth flashing back before my eyes 1979
1:22 is my favourite part
me too; took me awhile to play it right -- it's easy, but I kept screwing it up
🎶🎵🎶🎶Nicely done 🔥🔥🤩😎.. discovered this song and band when I was 17… 82’ or so.. a few buddies and I dropped 2 purple microdots and this song floated in the room via old school stereo…. Whoa… loved it since 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
This song is so much fun and easy to play on keyboard but yet never gets old! 🙂👍
The spoken bridge with the 5ths is still pretty tough for me not to mess up, but totally a fun song to play!
Excellent
Loving it ! more please
Thank you!
Fantastic!
Thank you!
Nice

AWESOME Cover Of Gary Numan - Are Friends Electric. 😃👍.
EXCELLENT !💖
Great stuff!
Excellent!
Many thanks!
Good job, I am a little jealous! Back in the '80's, I used practice Pseudo Echo's version of Funky Town.
Awesome, I love that version!
Supper Melody bravo Gary numan Number One , cover fantastik 🤗❤️🎹🎼🎶🎵
Thank you :-)
Why do I hear and play this different than most other ppl? I tend to play it the way Chris Payne played it on The Old Grey Whistle Test.
I thought the way he played it was interesting, with that inserted low note before what most people (including me) play as the 2nd note. Gives it a slightly different feel.
Best!
I can see you are playing the right notes but cant actually here the sound out of the triton though
I agree, I mixed this one too quiet -- but you can hear it on its own near the end. I also flubbed a note early in the 5ths part that unfortunately sticks out.
Ear 🍭
Hey galtem nice take..what year is the triton?
Thanks! Honestly, I have no idea... bought it used like 15 to 20 years ago.
Can you try this song red red wine .Ub 40) please
is each note playing a chord?
no, just single notes, playing along with the lead line, left is the root most of the time.
You guys realise he's just striking the keys, but the keyboard is not producing the tones we hear, right?
You can't hear my missed notes? I'm playing, I just didn't mix the synth as loud as I should over the song.
How is this a tutorial?
I demonstrate how to play the lead part of the song. I don't make a novel out of it or anything, but if you watch the video, you can follow along with how to play the lead.
He's playing in a way by just putting his finger on etc note, so you can see clearly, as normally our hands are over the keys and hard for you to see which key is playing, actually I've tried doing it this way to show people, and it's imo hard to do, as I'm used to having my hands over keys etc, think he's done a great job here to be honest
The keyboard shaking is giving me anxiety
Oh, ha ha, I could see that -- it's because the keyboard stand is on carpet. It's actually really stable despite the look -- it can only wiggle so far.
You want anxiety?? Wait til you see a drunk girl come up on stage in the middle of a song and put her weight on one end of it, thinking it's a solid table, and watch her push it down and the other end come up like a foot and see the shocked expression on her and my own face. Thankfully I rescued it with no harm, but that freaked me out.
Oh, and you probably shouldn't look out an airplane window in flight and see what the wings are doing :-)
@@galtem I played at a gig once where there was no stage and the dance floor was right in front of my 2 tier keyboard rig. As I was playing an over enthusiastic woman dancing ended up on top of me with my keyboards wedged between us. I looked at my guitarist and he said to me " that's show business!"
Lol, what is this??? Using the original as a sample in your "Cover", funny^^
I'm playing along with it, the lead line. You can even hear me fat finger it and screw up a few times. Yes, I know, I didn't mix my synth as loud as I should have when playing along with it. it's obvious when the song fades out though, and if you know the song well enough you should be able to tell the lead line is louder than normal. cheers.
Your not even playing that 😂😂😂😂 half the notes missing in the main section, nice try
Um, yes I am playing along with it, you can even hear me mess up by fat fingering a few notes. And of course I'm not playing everything you hear, just the main line.
I personally think he is playing it but you can't hear it. The soundtrack you can hear is the original recording played over the top. The best Gary Numan tribute band I know called Tubeway Days need several synths to emulate the original sound, I don't believe it's possible to create the sound with just the Triton. The last few seconds is the only actual playing.
@@andrewlaw Hi Andrew, I'm playing the whole time, but just the lead line -- you can hear some mistakes in the song while I'm playing. I just didn't mix my synth loud enough over the original recording for it to stand out as much as it should.
