5 Christian Metal Bands that are *actually* Christian

- Christian heavy metal is a sort of vague genre of music that is certainly always heavy but not always actually Christian. That's why I want to share with you in this video five Christian metal bands that fit the bill of both "Christian" and "metal" bands and actually glorify God with their music.

00:00 The dilemma of Christian metal music
02:02 1. Wolves At the Gate
03:52 2. Demon Hunter
06:08 3. Phinehas
08:04 4. Bloodlines
10:01 5. Impending Doom
12:46 Outro
Impending doom is my favorite Christian Metal band. And they are NOT a black metal band, BUT they are as heavy, if not heavier than most secular bands out there. And they are unapologetically Christian.
If you like them, you should check out Diamonds to Dust.
ua-cam.com/channels/HLs2jJ0LIhFaSwRMnyeEKg.html
My favorite is Living Sacrifice
I believe it’s considered “white metal” or at least that’s what I heard
I just heard a song from them called “Hellbent” and I got to say I’m confused. If these people are Christian then I’m sorry but where is the hope and redemption of Jesus in their message? How could anyone call them self a Christian if they only talked about the doom and sadness of society, but not also the hope and redemption in Jesus? I’m interested if you can show me otherwise, but I really don’t see a lot of that in any of their songs, their message, and their logo looks extremely questionable as far as looking like a manipulated upside down pentagram.
@@godfirst3709listen to serpents tongue Album sin and doom vol2 you will hear it the the song is about Jesuses image and the holy spirit.
Its just a little agressive.
Theocracy is a great band with Christian themes and a strong biblical message throughout
YES
Theocracy is CRAZY underrated
@@wildheart58 ya
Maybe he didn’t mention them because they don’t make the use of death growls and they are more vocal/instrumental. Idk, but they are awesome!!
Thank you! I just saw a couple of their videos recently but couldn't recall their name!
I love Lacey Strum she's close to a female Christian metal singer.Last month just started listening to Holyname. And a few of the ones mentioned here.
Impending Doom's lead singer has done a few songs with HolyName! I thought they would make the list, but then I saw this video is two years old, and I think HolyName just came out last year or something?
@@russellvitranoiii3504 just discovered HolyName. I like them because it is heavy music and you can actually hear and understand the words....which are amazing. The other band I just found is "Ignescent". Their song Remment is amazing
Becoming the archetype is my favorite of all time. They introduced me to how incredible metal bands can be at classical music.
Their version of How Great Thou Art is so good!!!
@@wendellpowell5838 I have a buddy I grew up with who’s grandma loved their version of that song
I love becoming the archetype there melodic metal is amazing
@wendellpowell5838 the best I feel it every time 😊
Deamon hunter was the band that got me into Christian Metal. Summer of Darkness is the first metal album I ever purchased.
"Daemon Hunter" would be a great name for a Linux band 😜
Extremist was my first DH album (yes, I'm a young gun) and it's what brought me out of my punk phase (thank God) and into the gift known as metal. Outlive wasn't out yet when my brother first introduced me to them. I remember listening to War & Peace the day they first came out (Bellum In Omni Spiritu, Pax Sola In Morte)
Same
check out Training for utopia... demon hunter before demon hunter... it still same singer. and his brother.. ( the original guitarist for demon hunter)
That album was SO GOOD!!!!! That was my DH debut, though it's actually their second album.
Wolves At The Gate really got me into the Christian metal genre. War Of Ages is another really good one. The Fire Itself was my album of the year pick.
War of ages was my first ever heavy band ive ever actually liked to listen too. Slow process but really started to get into it. A friend actually sent me a song by them. And i think it was battle on. Still one of my favorites! And they are still all i listen too for over a year now. But wanted some other bands hence the searching for this video lol
Are they all still Christian? This is 2 years old…just checking. Or, I can check 😂
@@autumnmariemu is who still Christian? War of ages yes. Wolves at the gate. Not sure. Havent heard much from them lol
War of ages has dark lyrics though😂
Demon Hunter, Wolves at the Gate and Impending Doom have become some of my favorite Christian heavy metal bands. I love their work and their music and their messages while spreading the love and word of Jesus. Honorable candidates are For Today, War of Ages, Crucify the Flesh, For All Eternity, Sleeping Giant, The Forerunner just to name a few. Still looking up and listening to other bands in this genre and the more I find the more I enjoy and love
You named a few bands that I've never heard of before, so I'm excited to check them out! Glad to meet a man of great music tastes lol!
Cool! New bands to check out! I'm starting a new music project myself that I've described as, "kind of worship music for metalheads."
Great Commission, anyone?
For today and War of ages are two of my favorite
Thank you young man 🙏 I'm 60 but love music and heavy rock I'm new to finding the Lord (real new 😊🙏).
This will help, bless you 🇦🇺
Thanks Jesus
I've loved Demon Hunter since 2005 when I was 14 now 32 and first listened to The Triptych. ✝️
Nice! I listened to them for the first time as a high school freshman with Thorns being the very 1st. I just turned 31 myself.
I so needed this! Thanks for being out here!
Hey! Thanks for the suggestions. 👍
Was totally expecting an actual music count down with video clips....
Just found this video and love it, so I'm heading to your channel now! My favorite band, because I love how boldly they proclaimed their faith, is For Today (and I hate that I missed catching a show before they broke up). I also really dig Sleeping Giant, and Wolves at the Gate! Fellow Buckeye here, too! A Fallen Buckeye, but Buckeye nonetheless...
Spotted Gentle and Lowly on that stack of books - great read!
Thank you! I backslid today and listened to KUBLAI KHAN TX. 😢 I needed this. ❤😂🎉
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it and created a new playlist to check out the artists I am unfamiliar with. I know and love Demon Hunter but no one else you talked about. God bless brother.
0:01 holy eyebrow!
Thanks for the references, I will be checking these guys out. ADVENIAT REGNUM TUUM
Huge fan of Bloodlines. I love Sleeping Giants and Fit for a King. Recently found impending doom and i really dig em. Keep it up man!
Thanks for this list, dude. I am an old '80s metalhead, listen to Stryper, Believer, Tourniquet, Bride, Sacred Warrior, Recon, etc. But I was curious about today's Christian Metal. I've heard of a couple of these bands but you have shown me several I have not heard of. So thanks and I subbed your channel. God bless.
Tourniquet slaps 😭
@@grouchyurinal2804 I grew up listening to their older music (first three albums), and those are still some of my favorite music of all time.
I love that you always keep your channel authentically you! The book reviews, the christian metal music, the mozzarella sticks. It’s great content and even better because it’s fully you!
That's a super kind observation to make! I figure I wouldn't be doing the Lord's work if I was just making content to appease the UA-cam algorithm, so I'm blessed to have so many avenues to authentically express how God's working in my life and how He can work in other people's lives as well. I greatly appreciate your kind words and dedication to watching my videos even though you don't like heavy metal lol. Stay lit as always 🕯🔥

You’re being as a watchman over the Christian music industry, so I pray that the Lord gives you even more wisdom and discernment 🙏
In these times of great deception, we have to be so careful that we’re not seduced by those artists whose lyrics and music come straight from the pit of hell.
God bless you in this calling that you have 🙏
Great video, Josiah! I totally agree with your list. 🤘
Thanks Kevin! You have good taste in music lol!
@@JosiahNordquist yes, sir! 😀 I'm similar to you, my Friend... Impending Doom is a little too heavy for my usual taste but my oldest son likes them and I agreed with you that we should support them. So, last night I fell asleep to Impending Doom's latest release, Hellbent. Appreciate you, Brother! 🎶🙏
I discovered Bloodlines about a month or so ago and have loved their music. My favorite songs are Ruah, Hevel, and Spiritual Warfare. Great video!
Those are some of my favorites too! Thanks so much!
an asmr channel that likes christian metal? lol
@@maudet8298 yes. I enjoy making ASMR videos and metal. ☺️
@@crystallineautumn gigachad
Wolves at the gate :), listened to them as per your recommendation and love their music, thanks.
I'm two weeks late with replying, but I'm so glad you're a WATG fan! They're the best! 🤘
thanx for sharing, never seen your channel before but i always appreciate more heavy christian music to weed through.
crowbar-cleanse me heal me
the whole album Sever The Wicked Hand is christian, but most of the frontman's music (Kirk Windstein) is very grounded in his struggles as a christ follower.
I love metal and am a newly devout Christian, I was honestly so sad to give it up but I'm glad to see that there's some amazing Christian metal bands, so I don't have to! Do you know of any pop punk/alternative Christian bands? I'd love to hear that as well.
This band isn't "Christian" but the song Jesus Christ by Brand New is good. I think they're pop punk but again, not Christian. They have an album The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me with Christian topics and undertones but in general they're not. The lead singer was raised Catholic and that album kind of covers his internal battle with religion and finding Jesus. I like it though
I listen to Skillet and The Letter Black. I try not to have idols or completely trust entertainment no matter what they call themselves though.
For pop punk/ alt: FM Static, Hawk Nelson, Thousand Foot Krutch
Same here man...this is good stuff...God Bless
Reliant K may be right up your alley. Project 86 is more hardcore punk but are great too.
Oh Sleeper needs to be on this list. They were my conversion years ago into christian metal. All great picks though along with bands others mentioned like Fit for a King and For Today.
Great list! I will check out the bands I don't know, for sure! I would have liked to see Project 86 and/ or Theocracy on the list. 👍
The world needs more bold, positive music that praises our Savior! Pethaps you can do a video on the top Christisn bands that have the best shot at crossing over (like Skillet, Stryper, Project 86, etc.).
Keep up the great worrk! People (especially young people) need to know that this kind of music is out there! God bless you! I am subbing!😮
Ive seen impending doom, in the midst of lions , and a plea for purging at my local church .. over 10 years ago now! I’ve been to hundreds of metal and punk shows , and that show still sticks out in my mind, very fun times indeed 🤙🏻
Great picks! Darkness divided and For today are also great 😃
STOP i love darkness divided they are rlly good and for today is forever amazing
Great video Josiah!, you should react to Deathcore / death metak and black metal Christina bands, I'm pretty sure this will make entertaining videos since you said that those subgenres of metal are not your cup of tea.
Thank you brother
Thanks for making this video! Always looking for a true Christian band and take the approach "you will know them by their fruit" just found Phinehas and love their stuff. Been a fan of demon hunter for years too!
have you heard impending doom ? serpents tongue is really good
renecent "son of God" is another great one
What about For Today, Sleeping Giant, The Chariot
I love impending doom, fit for a king and Phineas good picks 🙏🏼
Some solid bands right there 🤘🔥
Phinhas may very well be the greatest christian mustache-core band there ever was 🤙
Extol, Becoming the Archetype, Living Sacrifice are some I grew up listening to along with Demon Hunter. Just recently found Wolves at the Gate and love them.
Just happened upon your video. Very nice for off the top of your head. Could you do a history of Christian hard rock & metal video? Blessings! 🙏
Thank youuu 🙏🙏🙏🙏 metal has always beeen my thing, but lately i been feeling like listening to it can be so depressing with suicide toughts, violence and, im reborn since not sooo long, ive never been believing god until i got sober thats when it all changed and now im at church every sunday and i want to worship him but with metal so this is a huge THANK YOUUUUU
Great video
excellent commentary on the Christian bands. I have been into the Christiam metal since I became a fan of Stryper back in 1984. The 2 bands I have discovered lately are Ignescent and HolyName.
Great video, brother. I'd love to hear you discuss and/or recommend heavy Christian bands with female vocalists and the best non-growler bands. I grew up listening to Sabbath and Maiden and I'm not fully given over to the Cookie Monster sound yet LOL. I'm trying.
GFM has a female vocalist who does some growling, and Flyleaf is hard rock with mostly clean vocals. If you're more interested in hard rock, again Flyleaf, also Fireflight and Veridia.
I felt relief when i found HolyName. I'm a drummer and I've loved metal due to extreme musicianship and playing. It was tough for me because i would have to scan lyrics to make sure I'm not listening to black metal talking about antichrist, etc.
Thank you for highlighting Christian Heavy Metal!
The heaviness of Impending Doom makes their message hit so much harder. I think it's fantastic. I wish I had gotten into them earlier.
JUST NOW found this channel! Mad props for Demon Hunter, who has been my favorite band since Storm the Gates of Hell was dropped. Forgot to mention Living Sacrifice, the forefathers of Christian Metal.
Thanks bro for this list! I've been a believer now for two years and it's been difficult to find really good Christian hardcore metal bands. When The Wolves at the Gate was your first mention, I knew I was going to like your list, turns out that's the case. All of them are added to spotify. And you mention your in with the Christian metal community, is their like a social media or anything?
I do not listen to this kind of music but my son does. I am thankful that these bands exist!
Demon Hunter is so good. Their first album came out in 2002. They've always been very explicit that they are a _Christian_ metal band, even though their lyrics are a little ambiguous. They were my introduction to metal (2005).
Great to see Phinehas get some love! They are one of the best metal bands out there, and certainly one of the best Christian metal bands. Their lyrics are more explicitly Christian than DH's amd their music extremely technical and diverse but consistently heavy. Do yourself a favor and check out the video for "My Horses are Many": I promise you, you will be entertained 😂
My personal favorite Christian bands are The Chariot, Harp & Lyre, Showbread, and Silent Planet they're all so creative with their respective music and their lyrical content really displays the Gospel at work
Listened to Demon Hunter and Wolves at The Gate from the start but will definitely check the other 3.
Thank you!
Check out A Secret Ending as well. Really class solo act, very good lyrics
Could you do a video on Christian hard rock? Skillet, Red, and Disciple are amazing Christian hard rock bands.
For Impending Doom, check out the song Satanic Panic. Their song Murderer got me into them. My go to bands for Christian Metal are Impending Doom, For Today, and August Burns Red. ABR puts on an awesome show. Saw them twice and I highly recommend seeing them live.
I just found this video, great breakdown on the lyrics and bands. Impending Doom is actually more deathcore with musically heavy slipknot influences though not black metal. Anything after nailed.dead.rise is a change in sound. Also you should check out if you haven’t For Today specifically “crown of thrones” and “devastator”. And Sleeping Giant the songs “eyes wide open” and “clutches”.
Great video, I love the band list. Just to let you know, Impending doom is classified as deathcore not black metal. They where talking to people that are in and that listen black metal in serpents tongue. Doom did have a slam metal sound in there first album, Then in there next albums there sound became more deathcore in the early years when the sub genre got first started.
I actually just discovered bloodlines last night at work and they are quickly becoming one of my favorites
I was always told “The Crimson Armada” was a christian band & like you said they had members that were supposedly Christian. Their lyrics do have gospel references & I believe their first or second album “Guardians” was totally inspired by biblical accounts. Cool video man
Dude, good video! Have you checked out Collapse//Revive? They are amazing and DEFINITELY glorifying Jesus in their songs!
My 3 favorites are fit for a King, Convictions and Phinehas. All have help me come back to Christ.
Great list! As a fellow Ohioan, I can confirm we really do put out some of the best metal. Convictions is another solid Ohio based Christian metalcore band that would fit great on this list.
I didn't know Convictions was from Ohio! It's a proud land we hail from lol. Even outside Christian metal, bands like Beartooth, Starset, and twenty one pilots are all from Columbus I think, so Ohio truly is a hub for music. Thanks so much for watching Brennan!
@@JosiahNordquist Yes! You clearly have great taste in music.
Why do i keep coming across people from Ohio lol
Grew up in Youngstown. Ohio girl forever! 💙
Texas does Christian metal the best
All these bands are great…Convictions is REALLY good as well. I just found out about a band called Cntxt (context) tonight and they are suuuuper good and very open about their faith.
In The Midst of Lions, Living Sacrafice, Saving Grace, Fit For A King. Those are good ones too. Oh, and Impending Doom is more Deathcore than Black my friend. Great video brother, keep it up!
nine lashes and thousand foot crutch are one of my favorites. they have not made any new albums in a long time wish they would. I love demon hunter. never heard of the other ones i'll check them out.
I have always loved metal. Recently I purged my music of any rap and metal etc, so it’s nice to find some Christian metal!
You probably wont see this but how about Whisper From Heaven or Renascent? They seem pretty legit plus Antestor. Anyway great content.
There are so many from the 80s and 90s. Bloodgood, Jerusalem, Daniel Band, Sacred Warrior, Deliverance, Whitecross, Eternal Decision.
I was introduced to Christian Metal in 1987. At one time has over 900 cassettes. I now have converted them to mp3s. Well over 14k songs. I have listened to some that did feel right.
That's amazing. My old high-school band was named Deliverance HTX. I was the drummer. I found the real band Deliverance through UA-cam searching the name. I was in a blasphemous band back in those days and now I'm sold out for YHWH.
Believer and Vengeance(Rising) were pretty awesome too
@@GoneFishin610
That’s awesome!! God is good!!
My friend Yogi, whom I’ve known since i was a kid, is an unbelievable drummer for Demon Hunter
becoming the archetype amazing band! same with Sleeping Giant, in the midst of Lions, on of the most exstrem bands is called goatscorge.
I think I’d say For today is my favorite band, they were on on fire for Christ their entire career and seeing them live being super unapologetic Preaching the gospel was beautiful. Definitely the best show I’ve ever been to. Wolves at the gate is a close second when it comes to my favorites I’d love to see them live one day soon
Yeah. Too bad Mike 'quit' for acting like a true Christian.
@@calebhunter7440 what happened ?
I love for today. Wish they came back
We were going to play on a Bill with Impending Doom last year at Chains Unchained but they canceled which was a bummer. For something a little different check out Slaves Wage.
I got another, Saving Grace! 🔥🔥🔥
Great video!! Fellow Ohio Christian metal fan here!
Okay, these are all old school, beginning with Sanctuary, aka The Metal Church, founded by Pastor Bob Beeman. The Resurrection (Rez) Band, the first Christian "biker" band, and Darrell Mansfield, which are hard rock, Altar Boys, One Bad Pig, Lust Control (punk), and now for actual metal: Deliverance, Vengeance Rising, Die Happy, Bloodgood, Jerusalem, Leviticus, Bride, Barnabas, Ransom, Recon, Sacred Warrior, X Sinner, Ken Tamplin, and Galactic Cowboys. There's a lot others, but I can't think of them right now (past my bedtime, )The Cornerstone festival is a good place to find solid Christian bands.
Can you recommend any Christian metal songs with the same rhythm and vibe as “Valhalla Calling” by Miracle of Sound? I can’t seem to find any Christian metal songs that scratch that same itch. None of what I’m finding strikes that same balance of melody and grit with from the singers and primal and elemental arrangements. (That’s not the best description, but it’s the best I can do. Basically I love the epic sound of the song and everything I’m finding is too modern or too light/heavy/screaming)
Impending Doom is one of my favorite bands.
Petra! Stryper! Awesome!
Great list! ID is deathcore, black metal is a whole other level of extremeness. Love their album Death Will Reign, I find it's more very listenable deathcore in a weird way. Really heavy but also has some great hooky/melodic parts.
Yeah I'm still trying to figure out all the metal genres lol. I've been listening to Impending Doom a lot since posting this video last week, and I actually really like their sound. I thought it would be too grimy for me, but it's actually just the right amount of grime lol. Thanks for watching!
@@JosiahNordquist black metal is satanism ex (mayhem)
yeah thats more like Antestor (BM)
I surprised I didn’t see Living Sacrifice or Six Feet Deep on the list (check out LS Reborn and SFD struggle albums). Stryper, for sure. The godfather of all Christian metal. Aside from that, great list and video! Six feet deep is a classic band from cleveland! I’m from that state “up there” but I’d walk barefoot from Michigan to cleveland to see six feet deep play if they ever did another show. Amazing band and I always have a good time in cleveland anyhow (great people and restaurants! East coast custard is THE best!)
Check out Integrity
Another good one is Disciple, while not very heavy musically the words of their songs hit harder than and instrument could. They e been around since I believe the 90’s and all together their songs are good and have albums for almost everyone, give them a listen!
War of Ages, Darkness Divided, Phinehas, Demon Hunter were my first.
very cool
I dont really care to much for death metal singing but some of the christian bands that I found that are full on for Jesus is Stryper, Soul Jur, Contagious Free Indeed, impellitteri, Rob Rock, Eternal Decision.
Holy name is also great one. Love the song fall on your knees with Brian head Welch
Demon Hunter is one of my favorite bands of all time. For Today is another good one that I like.
Haste the Day is so great Metalcore, Christian metal band.
I love it!
should try 7 days away man good sounds
I just started to listen to Impending Doom and Becoming The Architect and I don’t know why it took me this long to listen to them. I been a fan of Demon Hunter since their first album, I also love For Today, Phineas, Stryper, Wolves At The Gates. GOD IS GOOD!!
What about Extol? I’ve listened to their music, their lyrics are pretty sound and they definitely follow the same track in the interviews I’ve seen.
I just heard eternally apart by Phinehas a month or three back and I had no idea they were a Christian band. That's awesome. Also Impending Doom (whom I love) is a Christian death core band.
Holy Name is My favorite rn! but I love demon hunter too!
Living Sacrifice did one song with Ryan Clark from Demon Hunter
You should give Stryper and For Today. Got some great songs, and Mike Sweet from Stryper is an on fire for Jesus Christian
I’m not really into metal, I’m more into CCM myself. But If you have a Spotify account I’d would follow you! More book reviews would be interesting Also maybe you could do a Q and A video and or maybe do a livestream
@Marco Garcia Christian Contemporary Music eg Jason Grey.
Do you have any CCM artists you recommend? And I'm an Apple Music guy unfortunately lol. All my friends are on Spotify though so maybe I do need to make the transition haha. There will definitely be more book reviews to come, and I was wanting to wait until I hit the 1,000 subscriber mark to do a Q and A, but since progress is slow I might end up doing one earlier. Thanks for the suggestions and support as always Jesse!
@@JosiahNordquist A handful! Jason Grey Lauren Daigle David Crowder Jeremy Camp Matthew West and Zach Williams but I can go on all day :)
There is not enough Extol being mentioned here. They are the BEST example of a Christian metal band that sing pretty clear messages of the gospel, whilst also suffering hatred from the church and their fellow Norwegian metallers. The music also blows everyone else out of the water
Yes! Extol is my favourite Christian metal band!
Just mentioned them, couldn’t agree more! Highly sophisticated writing! I listen to them pretty much every day.
Almost all these bands on this list I listen to, except impending doom im not super into death metal/ death core.
I have a more recent band that is unapologetically a Christan metalcore band, there called Reformed and there song Martyr is very very good I recommend checking them out when you get a chance.
Disciple is my favorite band!
Whitecross and barron cross are 2 of my regulars, followed by Petra and Skillet
The bands I often listen to are: Demon Hunter; Impending Doom, The Devil Wears Prada; Wolves At The Gate; For Today; Becoming The Archetype; A Secret Ending (he's new - like from 2020); I Built The Cross; In The Midst Of Lions; Man Ov God (Brooke Reeves from Impending Doom); Saving Grace; Sleeping Giant; With Blood Comes Cleansing; The Great Commission; War Of Ages; and Theocracy. Demon Hunter was my first introduction to christian metal, but For Today made it blossom and made me curious on what other bands are out there.
You'd probably like Diamonds to Dust

All great bands
I loved impending doom. Met Brooke reeves with a friend of mine who was a girl . We hit it off and we got to watch from back stage . He was one of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met
I love demon hunter very much and the songs and message they put out, though I must admit I wasn't a big fan of their most recent album.
I'm gonna check out these other bands in less familiar with though
That lower right art looks a lot like ABR's logo!
What about Underoath? Are they Christian metal? A friend of mine just recently suggested them but I haven’t had a chance to check them out.
They used to be, but distanced themselves from religion back in 2010. Their early work is great though
Saving Grace!!
