Great way to put it!! Easily in my top 3 live performances of all time, up there with Heart doing Stairway to Heaven in front of Zeppelin themselves. Two very different performances and artists, but both give me goosebumps to this day!
It’s one of the greatest performances on an awards show and a great story of how it came to happen. Chris told his wife that he was a little nervous about doing this show and she told him to invite one of his friends to perform with him. He didn’t want to ask any one being the humble guy that he is. His wife said ask Justin. And pop goes the weasel!
What would happen if these two giants went off on a world tour for 6 months, (with Chris's wife)? They would never have to work again, and it's not like they have to now, but the sales would be off the charts.
I’m a R&B, Hip Hop, Soul, black girl from the hood in Brooklyn and I swear these songs and this performances spoke straight to my HEART!! That’s how I know country music and the music I grew up on got the same grandparents cuz I FEEL it baby!!! 🙌🏾
@@rickmcintosh5787 You don't have to "agree"...it's a fact. This song is more of a blues song. And black people were always in country and blues music. It's not racist to acknowledge that. Black history in country and blues has almost been erased at this point. Every "American" genre has black roots mixed in it. Country and blues were created from the mixture of the cultures of the early Africans with the Irish and Scots when they got to North America. But it's a shame that when you acknowledge it people get upset and say "well... everything isn't about race". MY fave part of this incredible performance is watching the biggest and the brightest stars of Country Music reduced to giddy teenagers during the performance!!
I watched it maybe ten times in a row the day it first came out, and I’ve probably heard it another hundred times over the last couple of years… fricking iconic. And now he goes and does it again with H.E.R. for Hold On.
JT's band (Tennessee Kids) probably have more fun than any band playing. A cool thing was incorporating Stapleton's 3 core band members and seeing hugs and high 5's.
Every person on stage that night was ON POINT. The entire band was groovin' in a way that I don't think I've ever seen. It was one of those moments where the stars aligned just perfectly... and its on video. One of the only other modern live performances that rivals this is Heart's tribute to Led at the Kennedy Center.
8 minutes is NOT long enough. This is that performance that you don’t want to end. That you keep on watching. Don’t worry about running those runs back again and again. We all do it. Chris is on ANOTHER level and it is OK to appreciate greatness! Keep doing what you do.
I'll just never get over how special it is what Timberlake does here. This was Stapleton's coming out party to the country music world and Timberlake got that from the jump. He's a MEGASTAR that's out here playing 3rd wheel to Chris and Morganne Stapleton because he GETS the moment. It's so f'n good.
What's great in this video is JT's band is so tight and really getting into it! Like you said, "they are really vibing in the back," and they love Chris' singing - everyone. And Justin is always professional.
Justin has balls for going up on the stage with Stapleton. Justin has a great voice, but ... it just pales when you stand it up next to Stapleton's. So, very confident of him.
True but Justin is a more seasoned performer while Chris is so humble and it shows. All in all a very balanced (and bad assed) performance and aside from Christina Aguilera's "This is a man's world" in honor of James Brown the best I have ever seen and heard. Probably better because they killed both songs.
I have a coworker who grew up predominately on R&B, hip hop and 80s/90s pop music. When I played music at work, she would usually request R&B, hip hop, reggae, or soulful music. I tried to play a variety of music for the variety of people. Boy, when this song came on, she would get up and SING! She absolutely loves Tennessee Whiskey.
I remember watching this that night and sitting with my mouth dropped open at the greatness i was witnessing. Still one of the best performances i have ever seen…i go back and watch it frequently!
Let's not forget that is Justin Timberlakes band "Tennessee Kids" You can hear them in background chatting it up. That's not the microphone picking up the audience. They where absolutley digging this big time
How this two met Chris told the story on Joe Rogan Podcast show. Justin saw Chris doing a cover on UA-cam and loved it. Justin’s birthday was coming up so his wife got in touch with Chris and asked him if he and his wife would like to come to party and perform as a big surprise for Justin. They went and the rest is history. I saw that performance live and when it was over my daughter and I got up and said there is no more to see, even though that was about half way through the show. It literally was the best performance I have seen.
Greatest example of how a jam session explodes when everyone really gets into it. And the crowd of artists understand how exciting this can be. They want to be part of it. Band is loving it!
It was this performance that turned me on to Timberlake. I always had just thought of him as a boy band wannabe but he's legit. His album Futuresex/Lovesounds was on rotation on my Spotify for a good couple of months. And damn, dude can dance.
Futuresex/Lovesounds is an absolute classic. Untouchable album. Definitely in my top 10 all time favourite records. And you have to hear it as an album track after track. It's one complete body of work.
When Chris hits the high note on Justin song, I replayed 3 times. Add to all the other times I replayed that for a grand total of 1,692 times 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Hands down one greatest LIVE performances EVER.
Ya know, there ain't nothing like good songs, great performers and one hell of a horn section to get you on your feet. That one will go down in CMA history...when the rest of those great artists who are sitting in the audience and they're gobsmacked, you know it's the real deal.
Yes, in 2015 Chris was very new to the public, his debut album had just blown up. He's been in Nashville as a song writer since the early 2000's, and had a band he'd play with at small local joints on weekends for extra money. It was his wife that talked him into writing and releasing his own music. If you notice anytime his wife is on stage with him, depending on how early in his career it was, he often looks right at her, for 5-10 seconds at a time. That's because his stage fright with any crowd bigger than a honky-tonk was really bad. His wife is an accomplished vocalists and said, I tell ya what, I'll be your back up singer, and if your anxiety gets bad during a song, just ignore the crowd and sing to me like you do at home. I can hear the "awwwwww"s from the ladies as I just typed that...lol.
Try chris Stapleton and his wife morgane singing "Amanda " his voice is amazing but I think you will be really surprised how beautiful her voice is also x
1 take, live. and it comes out just Stupid Good. you're right everyone killed it. for reference, the crowd shots are practically all country music performers, some of them are legends, and they looked like kids at a concert.
This had MEMPHIS all over it. You loved that back up from the Memphis Sounds. They are famous for backing up MAJOR talent. JT war born and raised on the Memphis sound. Chris would be part of Beale Street the moment he set foot on there.
Chris Stapleton blends the genres of blues and country as well as and singer/musician. Tennessee Whisky was written by Dean Dillon who has written many wonderful songs. Stapleton's voice is unique and like no other. And bringing Justin Timberlake in to perform a duo was spot on. Timberlake has cemented himself as a singer that can cross most any genre and make it his own. All in all a wonderful and memorable performance.
To your point, Chris' version of Tennessee Whiskey is 2 songs melded together. The lyrics are by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove but the tune is a basic blues shuffle that was the chord structure and melody of "I'd Rather Go Blind", performed by Etta James and co-written by James in the early 60's.
