Hi, and thanks for your video, there is a huge gap between my ground strokes and serves. I tried everything but it seems it is turning into almost a brain block, if I send you a video would you be so kind to give me some tips? Thanks a lot
Not kidding. Not bragging. I served 120 back in the late 70’s. I used a head competition racquet that was my dad’s. While in a group lesson at Tam Tennis Club in the northern burbs of Chicago there was a young girl practicing with her coach on the next court. While we took a break Our coach (Bob Maramba sp?) was talking with her coach. I was shocked when he motioned for me to come over. He turned to the young girl and told her if she could consistently return my serve then she’d be able to handle any woman’s serve she faced. I spend the next half hour or so playing against her. I remember so clearly that It was like hitting against a wall. She returned everything I could give her. Her name was Andrea Yeager. That’s my tennis brush with greatness! True story. Another observation, Ryan’s service style looks EXACTLY like mine did. It’s like looking at a video of myself. I only wish I had some video of myself back in the day. Unfortunately, no one in my family was much of a photographer or videographer. Fun to watch!
Great video! I've been playing more than 40 years and have heard many of these concepts before but I think this pulls them all together. Listen to this guy because this is how you serve.
Marvelous video! This is the remedy for my humble serve that I been searching for more 10 years. Nobody told how to serve more precisely than this instructor. Thank you.
Well Peter first I want to thank you for trusting me to help you with your game. And if there’s a topic you’d like me to cover just let me know. Have a great day!!
Of all the channels I follow, this has to be the channel that I was able to take the tips and easily apply it to my game and see improvements. With that being said, I would like to start a petition to change the name of the channel to birthday hat tennis.
I really loved the way you explained this in such an easy manner, something I haven't seen anywhere on the internet. even though I wasn't able to serve 100 mph, my serve speed has increased with better accuracy. thanks a lot for these tips.
Omg, after the first great tip you gave I was like there's no way I'm going to learn something more in this video. I'm really suprised, I've seen and been told a lot about service techniques but I never had this approach before and I've been struggling with my serve. I'm really loose when I play tennis but when it comes to the service I'm really nervous and inconsistent and tight. This video makes me look at it in a different way. I'm sure it's going to be usefull and I can't wait to use your tips. You got yourself a new subscriber! Thanks a lot !
The visual with the hat is brilliant! And the explanations on improving specific parts as well as putting it all together was so good! Thanks for the great quick lesson, can’t wait until I get to apply it on the courts🎾
Ryan, Here I am, 53 and just getting back in the game. Started at 14 and was on highschool team where my love of the sport started. Never had anyone teach me the mechanics of a proper serve. Started with your tips and tried first time at last nights lessons. If anything, 70% plus first serve in and better feeling of serve. This and your other serve video my go to's! Thank you.

Thank you so much Tim. You’ve commented many times on my videos and they’ve always been kind me supportive. So glad you like my teaching style and videos. Thanks so much!!
Excellent lesson. I’m a 4.0 and have always struggled with my serve it seems. Have had many pros look at it but no one has figured out the problem. My legs and upper body was always disjointed. But that little tip about extending legs as racquet is about to pass over my head was the key (for me at least). Just played with this in mind and I was bombing my serve. Thank you so much!
This is the best freaking serve video I have seen yet, thank you so much Ryan! I’m already excited to get back out on the court. My waiter’s tray has been fixed with a more over head ball toss (as opposed to out to the right), and the birthday hat technique! I love the way you explained the snap, and the overall looseness of your body and arm. I’m still a bit guilty there lol. Thank you for your wonderful videos, cheers!
Thanks Ivan. And I do the vast majority of my videos one take. To me it makes it more like a real lesson. I just like to push record and start talking. :) thanks for the support!!
Growing up I was blessed with what my coaches (from other sports) would refer to as having great sporting biomechanics, being able to play any sport that involved hitting something, and I had this amazing knack of just being able to copy the movements of my favourite tennis players around Sampras, Agassi era. I taught myself how to hit every tennis stroke (including serving like in this vid) just by simply watching Sampras play on television lol. I'm 36 now and sadly I could never breakdown the skill and explain how to teach it to my children so using this amazing breakdown of all the different movements involved with the serve will definitely help teaching my younger ones, love the birthday hat idea! Thank you!!!!

The coil-uncoil parallelism with the forehand body movement is awesome! And many recreational players neglect coiling when serving, while they do it perfectly when hitting forehands!
Ryan, you are great. In so many serve videos you are able to add some additional elements. Today the loose movement and the knee banding were great and are so important. In addition I like the imporance of the coiling at the beginning. It was wonderful that you compraed it with the start of a forehand. I think this is so important as it directs the ball throwing and everything else. I noticed that before the coiling you make yourself loose as well by doing small relaxing things. I like this. By the way I finally got 10 birthday caps today---my wife couldn´t believe it until I showed her your video(s)...:-), Oliver from Germany
Absolutely AMAZING value in this video, Ryan! Other instructors have good tips for individual elements but you put it all together and provide ways to self-check sequencing and timing of elements in the serve. Thanks!
I have been struggling with my serve for 30 years using my pin-point stance, and thanks to your really great video, I am encourage now to change to platform and apply strictly all your checkpoints/tips. I am completely convinced by everything you said, and after seeing tons of video about serve and tennis in general, this is to me the best one ever. I wish you would be my coach when I started to learn tennis ! And what a great idea your birthday hat. Thank you again...
alright this is EXACTLY what I needed no one has ever told me to be relaxed I got the instructions from my coach and kinda did my own thing, but once I worked on being relaxed and loose everything changed my serves were more consistent, faster and just in general felt way better and I didn't spend as much energy and above all that as a coach myself I give lessons to kids I am definitely going to use the birthday hat method not only will it give them a better serve after all, but also a great motivation/fun tool thanks for this amazing video I learned a lot from it not only for my own game and that says a lot. Have a good one and stay safe and never stop playing!
I come from france and even though i a m not an english speaker i can say that this video helped me a lot to have a decent serve that i was looking for for years ^^ Thanks a lot!!
Wow! This was very clear for some of us who have had trouble understanding when the leg drive should actually happen. Some players instinctively understand when the leg drive should happen. However, this video really helps understand when it should happen. Very grateful for these tips.
Another awesome video. This has fast become one of my favourite youtube channels and I'm only 3 videos in so far (just picked up tennis again after a long illness so loving these videos right now).
I'm a 4.0/4.5 self taught player, been playing 4 years, and the main thing holding me back was my serve. I played yesterday and tried the palm down/birthday hat trick (with an imaginary birthday hat), and was amazed at the difference. I didn't even have time to really practice it, I just started using it in my match, and it felt natural. My opponent, who I play against once a week, was also amazed at my improved serve and noticed a major speed increase.
All very Super-Essential, Super-Fundamental elements of the serve stroke! Very useful. The one MOST important tip that you did not discuss is ELBOW INTO THE BALL. I call it Elbow-To-Elbow: elbow from all the way "back" to Elbow-Into-t'he-Ball. i just started tennis again after squash for 30 years!! great teaching. it is not about how hard one hits it. you are right on. it is techniqiue thanks a bunch
Brilliant Ryan! Sampras is the best example of tucking in the left hand towards your chest to create the snap effect or whip effect therein adding incredible power and speed to your serve.
Yes! I teach a small array of ideas but try to explain them in different ways. But I want to teach the same basic thing over and over again so it becomes ingrained for players!!! Thanks!!!
Forget all the.emphasis on the leg dip/ leg drive, etc. Most all of it happens naturally from a proper coil and uncoiling process. assuming you coil to the side and remain on balance - which is made easier mid you strike the ball to the right or left (depending on whether n you are left or right handed) and don't toss the ball too far forward or behind you. As you note, the coiling & uncoiling process on the serve is the same as on the FH - assuming you coil & uncoil the core. You are storing and releasing energy from coiling & uncoiling your core. And you can store more energy if you bend your knees a bit and rotate your hips a bit (while staying on balance), but not excessively so. You aren't in a jumping contest; you are just releasing energy from uncoiling the core and transferring it to your arm & racket head. Since you are exploding up to hit the ball above your shoulder you might come off the ground a bit, but it should be natural & not forced. Back when Poncho Gonzalez played you weren't allowed to jump into your serve. You had to have your toes/ foot still touching the court on contact, but Gonzalez & Lew Hoad & Arthur Ashe, etc. all had great serves and plenty of pop/ power & spin just from the basic coiling & uncoiling of their core. In fact, I'd argue those old school players had more fundamentally sound serves because they had to generate their power from the coiling/ uncoiling process rather than thinking that they were supposed to generate power by bending their knees & jumping up and into the court.
I try your tips on my games. There are a lot of no touch ace and love game. Actually, I'm already aware addressing racket holizontally. But I did not know why knees bend. My toss was high and racket was stopped before hitting a ball. Now my serve is incredibly improved. Thanks!
Great video. Federer bends both of his legs in the air because he is balancing his whole body from leaning to left too much. At times, when one is exhausted from deep in the games the body gets tired. Therefore, the body flpps around when serving. Second reason of legs bent is the whole body stays fixed in the air so the arm can do the heavy swing like a pendulum.
Great instruction and those serves look awesome! The pancake serve looked pretty good and I almost stopped there! As for the hat, I think I've found my new look.
Cant wait to try these tips. The birthday hat was a huge improvement for me. Combined with a few other changes, I hit some serves in practice that felt effortless but were the best serves I have ever.
Very good video. I knew about the movement of the left hand towards the body - which looks a bit counterintuitive at first - but you are the only one who explained the reason why it is done (slowing down the body to enhance the whipping effect). Now that I know what it is for, I am more likely to implement the tip. Thanks a lot Ryan!
Thanks helpful review of the serve for me with some added prompts re delay the bodies action as I do when I throw a ball. I can throw a ball along way just not able to fully transfer that power into the serve. I serve right handed and play all my other shots left handed so the feel in my right arm is not as good as my left. I am predominantly left handed and footed but throw much further right handed. Useful now as I get older as I can spread the wear and tear etc of practice and playing to both arms .
Thank you so much Ryan your video training is amazing since I played tennis haven't really serve very well powerful serve. I just tried to put the serve in and follow it up with my good returns and strokes. I do good volley but if I have a good serve i could easily kill the ball. That is why i will practice the training you gave. Thanks a lot. More power to your trainings.
Seeing the birthday hat maneuver showed me that I was serving with my elbow in front of my hand instead of behind it. Need to try this on the court ASAP.
Thank you so much for this video, my season just got over I wanted to continue playing but my soccer season is almost starting soon which is stoping me from playing tennis, When my season is over I will continue playing, great videos man.
Used a couple of these tips, now I'm consistently hitting on average between 95-101mph, 103 being my personal best so far. Nick Kyrgios was a big advocate for how I modeled my new serving motion along with some of these tips, his serve technique is just incredible
These tips are very useful and they work. I was looking for a way to add power with out muscling the server, which tends to cause arm pain. After applying these tips, already day 1 it has made a difference in adding power and reducing the arm strain felt when serving. TOP TIP!
@@2MinuteTennis yes! And I’m making them watch that and the singles mistakes! I realize now that I stood in the wrong place when serving doubles my entire high school career. On the plus side, I was an excellent lobber and won many points that way in games.
Amazing lesson! This is pretty much what my coaches taught me as a junior. Still how I serve today and I find this method also allows for changing up your serve (kick, power) without altering the base movements a lot.

Ryan, I have just subscribed your channel. Thank you for delivering a high quality teaching.
Wow thank you!! My goal is to be super helpful for rec players wanting to improve their game. Thanks for the kind words!!!
I try your tips on my games. There are a lot of no touch ace and love game. Actually, I'm already aware addressing racket holizontally. But I did not know why knees bend. My toss was high and racket was stopped before hitting a ball. Now my serve is incredibly improved. Thanks!
That’s so amazing to hear!! Thanks for trying the tips and I’m so glad they’re working for you. Have a great day!!
Wow,,, very intelligent explanation!! Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you Ken!! Appreciate it.
@@2MinuteTennis I am really happy to find this incredible video. I will keep watching and adapt to my practice.
Excellent tips and how you teach!!
I will start trying your tips this week.
Thanks for the kind words of support. Keep me posted how the tips work for you!! Thanks!!
Great tips, helped me on my serves by at least 20%. Birthday hat is a must and all my serves I remind myself of it now. Thanks for some ACEs!
Awesome instruction. Your passion is admirable
Wow thank you so much Ken!!
Wow Russell!! What an amazing testimonial. Thanks for sharing that with me and for trusting me to help you with your serve. Thank you!!!
great coach! thank u for making me get easy tips for serving in.. . from S.Korea / THANK U AGAIN^^
So happy to help you. Have a great day!!
Thank you so much great teacher
So happy you liked the video.
Absolutely fantastic videos you make my friend !!! Stunning clarity !!!!!!
Thank you so much Hassan!
You said it all!! Congrats!!
Great summary! Staying loose, winding up, and unwinding is so important.
Subscribed! Amazing content. Going to watch more of your videos
Thanks Brian!! So glad you liked it. I hope the other videos are just as helpful.
Seeing the birthday hat maneuver showed me that I was serving with my elbow in front of my hand instead of behind it. Need to try this on the court ASAP.
Ryan, I appreciate all your teachings and tips in tennis...thanks a lot...
Love it. Thank you. You’re the best!
Thank you so much for this video, my season just got over I wanted to continue playing but my soccer season is almost starting soon which is stoping me from playing tennis, When my season is over I will continue playing, great videos man.
Nice video. I followed Pancho Gonzales serve which is pretty much the same as your motion. You're spot on with the whipping motion. Stay loose!
Used a couple of these tips, now I'm consistently hitting on average between 95-101mph, 103 being my personal best so far. Nick Kyrgios was a big advocate for how I modeled my new serving motion along with some of these tips, his serve technique is just incredible
WIll give these tips a shot Ryan! Thanks !
Thanks so much Peter!
These tips are very useful and they work. I was looking for a way to add power with out muscling the server, which tends to cause arm pain. After applying these tips, already day 1 it has made a difference in adding power and reducing the arm strain felt when serving. TOP TIP!
Ryan,
Outstanding!! Can’t wait to try!!
I can't wait to try this very good instructions Thank You.
Good insights. U broke the various movements & gave a very good illustration & explanation. Good video
Thanks, Ryan for a great instruction - easy to follow and practice!
Can’t wait to share this with my JV Tennis team! I’m going to make them all subscribe to your channel. :-)
Wow wow wow!! Thank you so much!!!! I really appreciate your support!!!
Coach...did you see my upload on the top ten doubles strategies?
@@2MinuteTennis yes! And I’m making them watch that and the singles mistakes! I realize now that I stood in the wrong place when serving doubles my entire high school career. On the plus side, I was an excellent lobber and won many points that way in games.
Pretty useful and easy to learn
Amazing lesson! This is pretty much what my coaches taught me as a junior. Still how I serve today and I find this method also allows for changing up your serve (kick, power) without altering the base movements a lot.
