Massively helpful tutorial. You often see videos like this where the RAM and etc. are replaced, but never get to see the after-effects when the computer is on. It's great to have the confirmation of RAM being upgradable and etc.

Seriously! I got a nasty cut off the unfinished metal inside! And getting the snaps off warped the bottom of the chassis (not enough to be a problem but enough to be annoying!)

You didn't ask, but finding instructions this specific model (I'm guessing a 15m-ee0dx, because that's identical to mine) was remarkably hard. This is detailed to the right level, and my only mistake was when I decided to fast forward a couple of seconds (happily not an irreversible one, so I just rewinded and then things went smoothly again). Thank you, and have a great day!

Hi!! thank you so much for this amazing video!! My HP Envy totally crashed-- was working fine one day and next day go to boot up and would do two spins and that's it. Several wonderful coworkers in IT at work plus your video gave me the confidence I needed to tackle this!! I did not replace RAM, only 1 TB SSD and then clean Windows install. Thanks to your video on showing step by step how to take the cover off--yes starting at the hinge was the best way... I used a plastic guitar pick. each step I put the screws in little sauce cups so I wouldn't get them confused. the battery connector was a bit difficult but I used a round wooden toothpick and was patient. Yes you cant be in a hurry or have a bunch of distractions. Within an hour I was ready to install Windows. Like you said it took about a minute to get going... that black screen had me worried but I just waited and that small print menu came up as you described. followed all steps as you described and laptop is running great!! Of course painful to reinstall all updates, apps, passwords, etc, and I didn't have a backup saved, shame on me. But I am running again!! Saved me a big chunk of change to take it to repair or buy new laptop. Thanks so much again!! Sara

On the rubber strips, there was a clear plastic adhesive strip under them - so anyone else be aware that you may encounter that as well. Had to pull them up after getting the rubber up. You've got the best vids on hp gear!!! I tried to follow you on my new hp laptop. However, I had to make several changes in the BIOS before it would even recognize the flash drive. Legacy boot, unsecured boot, etc. Then I had to download a special drivers for Windows to recognize the nvme ssd. Best advise: "Don't close the case until you **successfully** install Windows."
Just a side note: I like to use clean milk jug caps to keep all the screws separate.

This laptop gets a lot of bad press for repairs but I don't think a bit of tape over screws is such a bad thing. They look much better set up for maintenance than even thinkpads of the last generation. Thinkpads are supposed to be the industry standard, and maintainable but I just changed thermal paste on my lenovo thinkpad T420s. Had to remove the back all the cables and the motherboard just to get to the cpu on the other side of it. Completely not designed for maintenance.

Hi Dale: Great demonstration. I used it on the same laptop to upgrade the RAM to 32GB.
I was wondering if you or anyone had any idea why my fan will no longer turn on automatically? I tested it to 80 degrees C, they would not turn on. As per suggestions around the 'net, I checked that the fans work by setting them to "always on" in BIOS. They do work. I checked for BIOS updates, I have the latest. And I did a reset by unplugging the battery again (of course I had when I installed the RAM in the first place, too).
But nothing worked. I did get a fan error message on first reboot, that my fan was not working. And there was some sort of BIOS warning, but it went away before I could see what it was...
I have the fans running happily away right now, set to always on in BIOS, to protect the CPU and battery. But I don't want them running all the time... I'd like to fix this issue. Anybody have any ideas what would cause this problem?

    • @proto57
      @proto57 3 роки тому +3

Well it "fixed itself". I have no idea how. I have Windows Update paused, so it was nothing there. Here is what happened:
I rebooted the laptop to BIOS, and disabled the fan setting "always on", then let it boot up. The fan didn't start. The temp was over 70 degrees C in no time, and was climbing as programs in my start up loaded. The fan never came on. So I shut it down again.
I booted again to go to BIOS, again, to reset it to "fan always on". But I never got there. I happened to miss hitting f10 in time... and it went to the Windows login screen. The fan was running! So I ran a graphics intense game, and as the temp climbed, the fan got louder, and brought the temp back down to a comfortable 50 to 60 degrees C.
I can only guess why this all happened. Is it possible that some parameters are loaded into RAM, and when I replaced the old RAM, I lost them... and they needed to reload again? All this laymen gots.
      Proto.

Disabling secure boot is probably the issue. If you cloned, there is no need to disable secure boot. Disabling that is causing system not too boot, most likely.

Increasing the hard drive and memory shouldn't affect the temperature. The CPU and GPU are responsible for most of the heat from your computer, and will scale based on how much work they're doing.

Hi Dale- I just bought the HP Envy x360 15-ed1008ca and several times have been surprised at how the fan suddenly comes on hi-speed [vs coming on sooner at low speed] and quite loud for 5 to 10 minutes & occasionally a lot longer longer. [Only ever 70 to 72F in the room] I saw someone who said it's mostly when charging due to the heat of the fast charge for the first 50% of charging which I've been watching and seems to be true. But since I've been watching for that, a couple of times that's the case but when I look in the HP Command center and the temp there has cooled off the fan just keeps running unless I do a restart then it doesn't come on after start up. Any idea if these pcs just have a problem with that? It has a bigger 51Whr battery. Thx for any thoughts Dale.
Also I just thought I wonder if the fast charge program for the first 50% of charge can be turned off. I don't ever need that. Thx

Could this have anything to do with the HP-branded Windows 10 Home version that is pre-installed with the HP Envy 17? Do I need to reformat the whole hard drive and install a clean Windows 10 Pro base OS in order to do dual boot on this HP Envy 17?
