the fact that the 2.0 hybrid was “fun” has nothing to do with the 50 million sold units because most of them had different powertrains.

I was at a dealership a few days ago, I set one up the way I want it. It was a core trim with all the posible options and it worked out to be about $40k. No problem. I was about to sign the dotted line and play the waiting game for them to put in the order to have it built when the dealer came at me with a $20,000 up charge for the car. All said and done, they wanted me to finance $67,000 for a CORE GR Corolla. Sorry, I'm not spending Porsche/Vette/Beamer money for a Corolla. I don't care how cool it is. Thieving bastards.

I bought the Corolla Hatchback XSE (2021) with manual transmission as a daily driver vehicle to replace my 2013 Civic that I “gifted” to my new-driver daughter. I chose it specifically because of the manual transmission and specifically because “it’s a Corolla”. I know it has the potential to outlive even the best Hondas, and that should really be its selling point. It turns out to be more fun to drive than I expected, even though it isn’t quick by any measure. But it should never even be considered as an enthusiast’s car - it looks way faster than it actually is. So then….looking forward to one day maybe parking it’s speedy little brother right next to it if I can get my hands on a GR Corolla 😊

Kirk, Someone asked if this was the new Matrix and I would underline your response by calling this Corolla hatch the Anti-Matrix. The Matrix was about space, utility, flexibility and efficiency in a small package. This generation of Corolla hatch is about refinement, fun and relative efficiency in an even smaller package. BTW I was surprised you fit in the back, it just goes to show how many definitions of 'six feet tall' there really are ;-)

It's comparable to a Honda Civic Sport & up. No way an Si.
I drove one not long ago. Handling was softer than a Civic, but similar to a Mazda 3. I liked it a lot, but my wife far preferred the Civic Coupe which we bought. (It also edged toward the Civic's superior handling ). We get excited about good gas mileage more than acceleration, for that once a week flooring it out in the desert and gas over $4.25@gal. My gas mileage from day one is 39.5 mpg! And I opted for the CVT because Honda and Toyota have CVT's that run perfectly (unlike Nissan's JATCO CVT trash). Overall, this is a wonderful car, fun to drive, but nothing in this car is cutting edge...like the Si.

0-60 7.5 seconds with the manual per almost every auto publication. This is probably due to the fact you can hit 60 in second gear. Certainly adequate. Also, the car has dual injection with both port and direct which will prevent the carbon build up that is common on direct injection cars. Should be very reliable for a long time. The price markups are just crazy. I can't believe early during the pandemic you could find used varieties with 5k miles for 19k and new ones for 22k.

I’m really hoping the reason the GR Corolla has taken so long to come out is because Toyota decided they’d make a middle ground between the regular hatch and the GR Corolla. The GR Corolla would sell out so quick that making a middle ground Corolla would make more sense. The Corolla is definitely the easiest car to live with, but I know for enthusiasts, not being as engaging makes the Civic the more appealing choice. If you just commute and need a appliance that will engage you with its three pedals, the Corolla is a good choice. Honestly, I'd sacrifice the better styling of the hatch and go with the SE 4 door with the manual, at least you get better rear space and a moonroof. Had I not owned a Corolla before, I might be driving a sedan because the hatch just seems way too small for me.

Real 0-60 test drive good to see. Some do half of the rev range which is 3000 something. You feel the power over 4000 and it’s Ok to drive faster unless you’re doing a car break-in up to 1500 miles. I think the real restriction is not going over 55 miles an hour in that amount of miles under the 1500. So it’s not a fast car but it’s definitely not a slow car either a least the manual is slightly faster.

I believe that all new Toyota models come with an actively cooled EGR system for greater fuel economy. See, at the higher revs engine produces a ton of heat so quickly that its cooling system can't effectively cool it, which can harm the engine. Earlier on this phenomena was countered by rich fuel mixture (where executive fuel acts like a coolant because there's not enough air for burning it). While effective, this strategy isn't exactly fuel efficient so in the 2000s automakers started to use recirculated exhaust gasses for cooling purposes, because they practically don't react and don"t burn, they are mostly there to fill the volume (+ it's a good way to lower harmful emissions by more through burn). The latest adjuration of this tech employs a radiator system for active cooling of exhaust gasses which completely eliminates the need of enriching fuel mixture for cooling purposes and even allows for much leaner fuel mixture than it was possible before. I think that Mazda with their Sky-active was the first one to deploy this tech in mass production vehicles.
    Glory to Ukraine!

Unless they radically changed this car since I drove it in 2018, this is just a tarted up Corolla and is nowhere near a competitor for the Si or anything else in that class. It's not a bad thing, but what it says it is and what it is are two separate things.
Also one of the most bizarre, if not memorable, test drives I've been on. The dealer was a former club bouncer and spent the whole test drive going into graphic detail about the breasts of the women he dated. Seriously, all within a 15 minute test drive.

Did Toyota eliminate the 6 speed manual on Corolla Hatchback for 2023? Really disappointed if they did. My husband likes this car but does not want automatic. He wants a regular 6 speed that runs on REGULAR unleaded gas not PREMIUM.

Is this really THAT much smaller than the Matrix? The Corolla Cross is way bigger than my 2007 Matrix. It does seem that the cargo area and rear seat space are smaller, but the over all packaging is in a similar footprint. What's your take on this?
Edit: also, I feel like the Corolla hatch is definitely the direct successor to the Matrix. In the Matrix owners manual if my memory serves me correctly, was literally called the Corolla Matrix. The Corolla Cross is definitely also a 'successor' because just like the Corollas, Priuses, UX, among other models, it is designed upon the Toyota TNGA-C ("GA-C") platform. However, it's definitely a lifted CUV. And YES I know Toyota called the Matrix an SUV... but COME ON it's a freakin hatch. 😂

The 2.5 with 206hp would make it a proper hot hatch. Toyota has nothing in this category. The GT86 is a totally different design and configuration.
Toyota has nothing in its portfolio to compete with this.

Man, I like how it looks, but is darn slow compared to a hot hatch...is it still a 1.8 16v naturally aspirated engine? If yes...it is fun only in a Miata..that is just slow..

I don't understand comparing this with an SI when the regular Civic hatch with a 6MT exists... Which is what this competes with. I own a 19 hatch and I love it, probably trading in for another when the lease is up.

Except in order to get a stick in the Mazda you'll need to pay around 30k, whereas you can get the Corolla with a stick for 22k at the lowest. That's a pretty big difference.

@@StopWhatYerDoing Only keyboard warriors who dont actually buy cars care about MSRP. Also this video is about the hatchback, not the sedan, the hatch isn't anywhere close to 22k. And even if you include the sedan Corolla manual start around 26k irl, not 22k and Mazda 3 manual at 29k not 30k.

    • @StopWhatYerDoing
      @StopWhatYerDoing 2 роки тому +3

@@Mgoblagulkablong When did I mention the sedan? A manual SE Corolla sedan is more expensive than the hatch. Plus I've got an order in for a manual Corolla hatchback, so actually yes, people who buy cars do care about MSRP, especially in this shitty market. Starting MSRP on the SE manual Corolla hatch is $20,915. Price for the manual Mazda3 is $29,960 as built on their website, not included delivery fees. I love the Mazda3, but for most people 30k is too much to pay just to get a stick, especially when it can be had for thousands of dollars cheaper in another car.

I really dont understand people who compare this to an Si. The Civic is basically a mid-size now, and doesnt have nearly as much standard features as the Corolla. Not to mention that 1.5 turbo and all of its problems.
Not saying the Civic is bad, but both cars have advantages and disadvantages.
The Corolla imo is more comparable to a Mazda 3...
