This one is for all the outcasts, the geeks, the marginalized, the wallflowers, and the people who are “different.”
Every once in a while, I believe you get to “say something” with a piece of music. When I was in High School, I was definitely NOT one of the popular crowd. My tastes in music, art, and movies were too weird. I was awkward. I was not a very attractive guy. Generally, I was that “gay, artsy kid.” If I could go back in time, I would give that younger me a hug and say “you are FINE the way you are. You are AMAZING.”
This new work, AFFIRMATION (Grade 3) commissioned by the Barrington Middle School Band and their director, Mr. David Triplett-Rosa, is an anthem for all the kids who ever felt like they didn’t belong. It was originally scheduled to be premiered last year, but was pushed to this spring, and will be premiered April 8th. A huge thank you again to David and the band for letting me write this work and trusting me with its message.
It would have been easy to write something soft, lyrical, and saccharine, but I wanted to take a different approach…I wanted it to be a celebration.
This is the single happiest thing I have ever written in my career.
So this one goes out to the band geeks, the nerdy kids, the art kids, the drama kids, the punk rockers, the LGBTQA+ kids, the kids of color, and the all the people (kids and adults) who have ever been made to feel “less than” because of who they are.
You are beautiful.
You are JUST FINE the way you are.
And you are WORTH celebrating.
We all have more in common than we have different…our common humanity.

I really loved playing this piece last year and so did the rest of the band. This song is just more proof that Randall Standridge is the most underrated composer of our time. We also played IronHeart, music speaks, and Afterburn, but this one is my favorite song I’ve ever performed.

I know this is supposed to a happy song, but it makes me sad, it sums up my first year of highschool band.
I came back to listen to this piece again to remember the time about a year ago where 3 of the high schools bands in my city, mine included, came together to be one and played this with Randall himself conducting. Incredible time.
Currently playing in my middle school band, so cool to see how it all comes together!
As a trumpet, I really like the solo mix at the end it really makes me feel like the song comes together and the bell tone is just gorgeous!!!!! Also, Go Bristow and thank you for making the song Reconstruction for our band!!

We're playing affirmation this year, it's arguably one of my favorite songs I've played.
I’m playing this for band this year and the trumpet part is sooo good. I love that it’s very similar in style to New Era Fanfare, a song I played in 8th grade, made by the same composer
Play bari sax on this one and it’s an absolute pleasure, love the composer’s more that came with the score!!! Made me tear up.

@@GrenadeGoose it’s great! love that the baseline actually has something interesting goin on! I miss playing it since my spring concert is this week and all of the songs for it are super tough. I wish I could go back to playing something more simple like this! Good luck though!
Last year, when I was in 7th grade, my band and I played this for Gmea and for the National Concert band festival in Indianapolis!
Little did any of us know that it was our directors last concert with us before moving:(

We played choose joy for my band concert last week...and after that i realized, i really connect to all of randall pieces. We also plahed into the clouds and blue sky horizon both fun pieces. I really hope we play affirmation in my band cause it catchy and the fact is about peace and unity brings a good message. Thank you randall for being my inspiration on persueing my musical capabilities, and maybe even try composing

@bob-the-bob576 in the conductors score, there is a big section where Standridge gives his reasons for making the piece and who the pieces is made for which it is essentially made for all those people who are weird and outcasts and he also says in the message that we are perfect just the way we are

Played as first chair Alto sax, it was so fun to play.
Reminds me of how earlier this year I was sitting in the audience of a band watching them play this song! This piece made me cry and I really felt the fine details of every note. The emotion on this piece is wild, too! Really an eye opening work of art! Props to the composer! :)
This is an amazing piece of music. Playing it in wind ensemble and it's by far my favorite! I wish I could play the play the sax part at measure 5 but sadly I'm part 2 :(

This was my flagship piece for the year with my students. I had planned for them to work on it as a challenge throughout the year... They liked in so much they learned it in time for our first concert.

This piece however, I wish we were playing as well. I love your music and have loved your music since the first time I’ve played one of your pieces. I played Xylophone and some other mallets on this piece in band, and I built up so much wrist strength!! Good times!

I loved playing the Horn/Tambourine and the Snare for this and the Trumpets on this and Woodwinds and Low brass the whole band makes this a Happy and peaceful sheet of music I also played music speaks (My band is a small band but we played this well)

I love this song and what it stands for but we’re still a grade 2-2.5 grade band. Maybe next year, we can give it a shot.
