"You wouldn't dare touch the GRRAAK." is one of my new favorite lines from any game. Thanks Cendric's Quest, and thank you, Janosik, you golden god of game compilations
Gabriel Kinght, Sins of the Fathers not only is the best Point & Click adventure of 1993 but also it could arguably be put in a Top 5 list of all times. The Legend of Kyrandia: Book One in my opinion is a similar case to Gabriel Knight, although it came out the same year than The Secret of Monkey Island (1990), which is probably the greatest Point & Click adventure and also one of the best and most impactful videogames ever made.
@@OldAndNewVideoGamesIt would be very adventurous indeed to have Kyrandia overtake the Indiana Jones and Monkey Island titles. I have a deep bond and fond memories to Brandon's journey towards the healing of Kyrandia; it usually happens to me to particularly enjoy the kind of hidden gems games - just as I think your channel is! Beautiful content, I really love what you do. Please keep the inspiration going if you may!
Didn't find the game I was looking for in this list, but this was well put together and presented. Thank you for making it easy to search through your video.
Played most of these up to Full Throttle, except Death Gate and Zak. Heard or read about the others in magazines at the time. Another great nostalgia trip! Thank you :)
@@alexanderwald2046 It's crazy if you think about C64 not only running these huge LucasArts adventures, but being one of the first platforms they released on. I think that for Zak it was even *the first*. xD
Man. Monkey Island > Monkey Island 2 > Fate Of Atlantis > Day Of The Tentacle. What anabsolute insane string of games. Four of my favourite games of all times, not just favourite adventures. MI2 is my personal favourite, but all four of those loomed large in my history of gaming. The good ole days.
Mission critical, sword of shanara, toonstruck, larry, orion burger, space quest, discworld, kings quest, loom, bad mojo, blade runner, i have no mouth, lost world also pretty good :)
I have played the old 1980's and 1990's Point 'n click adventure games mostly on my Amiga 500 😺👍🕹️. But i also had DAY OF THE TENTACLE as The Talkie CD-ROM version back in the mid 1990's 😺👍🕹️. As i stepped into one of the rooms in this game, i have noticed the original classic MANIAC MANSION (also a full game) 😺👍🕹️. I still have MANIAC MANSION as one of the Kixx XL games for my Amiga 500 😺👍🕹️. And i have to admit, that DAY OF THE TENTACLE is the best game, i have ever played from LucasArts Games 😺👍🕹️. LucasFilm Games / LucasArts Games at their best 😺👍🕹️!
Indiana JOnes and the Last Crusade enamored me as a kid. I will always love that game. Did you ever see the Point and CLick game "Harvester" its really trippy and would make a good bit in a vid. CHeers bud
Yep, I have. I even said a word or two about it in one of the 10 Years of DOS Gaming videos, for 1996. Not much, as these were taking a rather short look at each game, but I have. :)
Great video. I actually dispute that Fate's 3 paths have different difficulties. I used to think so, but I played through the whole game last summer, and played the 3 paths side-by-side, and my impression was they were exactly even in difficulty. Just different puzzles. When you come to Atlantis, the last stage of the game, they also trail into same path again.
Very solid list overall, nothing to argue about IMO. -Can't argue with Full Throttle for 1995, but The Dig was also really well done, with a very solid story. No wrong choices here, both very worthy options. -I never played Death Gate, but saw an LP of it and it looked like a really interesting setting. I've heard the books are very solid too. -If I was guessing blindly, I would have expected at least one of the later King's Quest games (5 to 7 when they became point-and-click) to make the list purely based on fame but I don't think any of them is better than the respective games selected.
I thought about The Dig too. And while it was great, it never gained any huge following, so chances of it getting a spot were pretty low. Same for Sierra games. They were great but had many mechanics that would not be something to most liking. Cheap deaths, parser and the likes. xD
I can accept that Curse of Monkey Island wasn't the winner of 1997, but how did Grim Fandango lose to some game most people have probably never heard of? Makes me wonder how the scores were calculated, like if it was a high average score from a small amount of votes or something
I'm a bit surprised that Myst didn't make it on the list, but I guess that much of its appeal was the presentation, and that didn't age great (althought the Real Myst remake still looks nice).
@@OldAndNewVideoGames Yeah, it was quite difficult, but not unfairly so. There was no random clicking in search of an item a few pixels large or puzzles along the lines of "combine a banana peel, toilet paper and a bowling ball into a makeshift hand cannon". Also, with a hub world structure, if you got stuck, you could always abandon a particularly annoying puzzle for a time and try your luck elsewher
@@Qba86 You're once again correct. That said, and I'm not basing it on any research or extra work done on the subject, just my hunch, I think that most people preferred 3rd person adventures to 1st person ones.
@@OldAndNewVideoGames The fact that most "Myst clones" weren't exactly memorable didn't help either. But speaking of (mostly) 1st person point'n'click games, The Last Express was great. At times it felt like an animated Alphonse Mucha painting.
I first played & still have Deja Vu on the Game Boy Color! Staggeringly it actually looked & played better than the PC version! I have Zak McKracken on GOG to play on modern PC’s because it’s a classic. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was fun but I personally think Fate of Atlantis was better, but that’s me. The Secret of Monkey Island! Lets Goooooooooo! I love it & most of it’s sequels but not Monkey Island 2, it’s a great game to play, right up to the ending which is jarring & ruins the franchise, even if they retconned it after. Day of the Tentacle is so good! If anyone hasn’t played it you really should. It’s not hard to find & funnily enough my ex played it first in it’s (upgraded form) on the PS3. I actually don’t know Death Gate? Sounds like one worth a play? Even if I don’t know the books. Full Throttle! Come on, what a classic! I have it both on disk & from GOG. It may seem a little simpler to some but that just keeps the pace of the game up for me. Broken Sward 1 is a masterpiece! It’s beautifully animated, the characters are compelling & it set new standards in storytelling in video games & I played all the way through it once on the Game Boy Micro! 😄 The Last Express has its fans & for good reason but for me personally I could never get past the uncanny valley rotoscoped characters & no amount of head juggling easter eggs can make up for that. Also I don’t like timed elements in games. Cendric’s Quest is new to me. Doesn’t look fantastic but sounds like it’s worth a look? Great list! Some of the greatest & most influential games of all time & even a couple I don’t know. It’s great to see these MobyGames lists brought to life like this, thanks. I grabbed Search Party, sorry.
There were about a half a dozen versions of Deja Vu, and PC DOS looks worst of all of them. Even the 8bit ones. xD It's still as fun though. I too prefer Atlantis to Crusade, but at the time I wasn't as picky. Oh, and I played both on Amiga and only the second years later on PC. Have you played the new Monkey Island? I miss GBA and its games. I mean, I know that I can emulate them all, and even have a small handheld console I could do it one. But it's not the same when it's not the original hardware, is it? Also, YES! YES! Objectively speaking graphics in The Last Express are great, and they really are. They just don't land for me either. And I can't really tell why... It's just one of those things I suppose. Don't worry about the key, it's there to be grabbed. :)

These 4 alone, everyone should play, as they're timeless and as good today as they were back then.
When you end up in a guitar battle with another pirate, you know you aren't in just another point and click game.
Deja Vu: Ah, the classic CGA graphics with beeper sound. The best antidote to 1980s nostalgia.
LOL :) True.
Zak McKracken is probably the only game where the plain old PC speaker version is the best version of the soundtrack.
I actually never thought of it. I'll have to listen to it on PC Speaker then.

The World (MobyGames users) has spoken xD
They certainly made games differently back then. A lost artistry with these titles.
Oh LucasArts really have justice to that art bit.
Maniac Mansion, Colonel’s Bequest, Ultima (series), Grim Fandango, leisure suit Larry series. You left off a lot…
