      I can picture them paying homage to this just by her naming the journal Ellen and that’s it. We don’t need the actual person or letters. Just her deciding to name her journal Ellen and writing dear ellen on each page.
      But this is not the most crucial thing to keep in this film.

    I totally get where you're coming from on the imprinting on the first love interest thing but I actually felt like that was done on purpose in the book. While I by no means thought it was a perfect book, I appreciated getting a better understanding of why a woman would stay in that kind of situation and how complex the feelings towards an abuser are. I felt like getting to know Ryle and Lily together first and wanting to root for them before finding out that he is abusive just adds to that ability to understand the complexity of the feelings in am abusive relationship and how a person can try to excuse their partner's behaviors because of the love they have for them. Feeling connected to him because he was introduced first definitely adds that layer to it that I think really matters in a story that's trying to help us understand abuse from the victim's perspective. It helps people to blame them less and have more empathy.

    • @janeryan2709
      @janeryan2709 5 місяців тому +1

      Exactly! Plus I honestly feel like us meeting Atlas first and seeing him and Lily together with the understanding that they were always meant for each other would almost justify Ryle's thoughts and insecurities about Lily and Atlas (obviously not his abusive actions though). We have to see Lily genuinely dedicate herself to Ryle and be focused on him first - that way we can have less sympathy for Ryle overall when Atlas comes (back) into the picture since much of Ryle's insecurities would be unjustified in the first place.

    Just so you know, I am doing my best to avoid anything relating to Colleen Hoover because I hate how popular the books are. However, the reason I'm commenting is because another video essay channel I follow did a very unconventional list of his favorite comic book adaptations and he put Josie and the Pussycats at the top of the list

    Great thoughts! Read this one from the library as my first (and possibly only) CH for a book club, and I love your ideas. Especially, especially the idea of making the alcoholism more prominent. Like you said, makes the ending so much more comprehensible.

    • @LadyJenevia
      @LadyJenevia  5 місяців тому +5

      The ending BAFFLED me (especially without the 'Note from the Author' context). The willingness to co-parent with that horrible man without getting lawyers involved was WILD. 😵

      @@LadyJeneviaRIGHT?! I was like, what did I just read. Are we just continuing these cycles? The alcoholism provides such important context (not excuse ofc but context).

    • @LadyJenevia
      @LadyJenevia  5 місяців тому +3

      @kateliness2 The author explaining her relationship with her own father and the difference in his behaviour before and after sobriety completely recontextualised my perception of what was being attempted for the character. The material didn’t translate well on its own. Even the casual drinking at the bar where they wear the onesies? That was never painted as anything other than fun? If he’s an alcoholic (or inspired by one) that should’ve been a recurring place in the story to communicate his drinking is a problem.

    This was so interesting! I’ve heard a lot about the Colleen Hoover books but wasn’t personally interested in reading them. I liked your thoughts on how an adaptation could work/what it could do to work. My favorite book to screen adaptations are the ones that are able to convince me of the changes bc it almost keeps the essence of the story better than a more literal adaptation. Changing mediums, especially from a non visual one to a visual one, requires a really deep understanding of the source material. I hope you do make a video about the movie! I think your opinion is always fair, genre-informed, and production-informed. It’s also why I liked your video about The Trap!

    All the points you made are legit. Even though I know very little about Colleen Hoover’s work, I could still grasp your observations. I have never read any of her books. From what I had previously heard, her fiction did not appeal to me. But then, when I found out that this adaptation would be starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (I’m a huge fan of both of them), I thought I might watch the film, at least. It’s just A THING we have as viewers. We see a meet-cute and ATTACH. It doesn’t help the story to make sense if they don’t first establish that she’s been pining over Atlas for basically A DECADE (or longer since the actors for the film are very much older than their book characters). 😆

  • @monideun
    @monideun 5 місяців тому

    First I'd like to say I like this video concept! Its a little creative mind map- I have so many thoughts to add!
    While I agree with all your other points, I actually think introducing Ryle before Atlas would work well too. So what if the audience imprints on Ryle and then their perception of the story is blown up - thats what its like for many women. Often they "fall in love", get isolated, and then their world is upended along with all the confusion/self doubt & blame/gas lighting that comes along with that. I think it could be powerful for the audience to get a taste of that.
    I definitely think the diary entries need to be swtiched up- they were used as framing devices for flash backs. I think things like the tattoo, the funeral, the first meeting with Atlas, and the magnet could be the new framing devices that take Lilly back in time instead.
    I didnt pick up on the alcoholism either! That definitely needa to ramped up, but only if the conclusion of self healing is included. Of its not, then its just making excuses.
    I love the idea of blacl outa instead of visual DV. Imagine, their laughing in the kitchen one moment, she wakes up in her bed sore the next, no idea whats happened.
    I'm not the biggest fan of Ryles sister, not sure what felt off for me, but something just made me uncomfortable/gross.
