    The disconnection from “young lily” to “older really” was soooo incredibly noticeable. Like they were playing two different characters. The actress playing young lily was actually sticking to the books. And Blake lively was playing Blake lively. In an interview they asked Both how they prepared and the younger actress said they talked 2 times… It SHOWS.

    I'm actually okay with ryle not being shown to be explicitly alcoholic BC i think its an important message for people to know that its not always dead obvious who will be an abuser. I think it helps you put yourself in lilys position easier bc it prevents ppl being able to say, oh well i just simply wouldnt go for someone like that in the first place and i think that would be lost if ryle had an obvious red flag to most of alcoholism

      He definitely had other red flags but the characterisation felt all over the place to me when I read the book (in a way where things didn't make sense) and after I read the note from the author saying she modelled him after her alcoholic father, that's when his behaviour actually made sense to me.

      I agree with this, that would be a really interesting way to tell the story and have a great message (you don't always know / this is how you end up in this situation). But it seems like this wasnt an intentional approach, in the book at least?

      I tend to see A LOT of films because I'm highly interested in the medium, my monthly movie pass gives me the room to see A LOT of releases if I choose to do so (without having to pay more than the cost of the pass itself), sometimes I see a film without having high expectations for it and end up being surprised in a good way, and also because I want/need to review new releases on here.
      I knew it was a controversial work of fiction but I'm completely serious when I say I have seen SO MUCH WORSE this year. It's not the type of story I would have an interest in revisiting recreationally but it wasn't a chore to review, especially within the framework of what I had already put together for my previous It Ends With Us video. 🤷🏻‍♀️🧐

    I found the book very cringe and meandering, but seeing the film in a packed theater (half of which clearly went into it without having read the book) it was so fascinating to see how the story played out like how they were so drawn to Ryle, even excited by the proposal, until they slowly hated him. It wasn’t an immediate switch.
    I liked how the characters wore their outfits more than once, but why was Lily a walking ad for designer brands? The Valentino bag, the YSL boots, the red bottoms. I hated that it implied she was so well off without him, when part of maybe being stuck in that relationship is a well-off neurosurgeon lifestyle. That’s not to say women who stand on their own two feet financially aren’t susceptible to DV, but in this narrative it just seemed like a product plug doing a disservice to the story.
    So glad Ellen was forgotten about, unless they got to point out how her childhood idol isn’t an angel too lol.

    • @LadyJenevia
      @LadyJenevia  5 місяців тому +10

      Meanwhile I was making audible groans, scoffs, and other noises of disdain any time Ryle would do... more or less, anything. 😂
      I assumed that Lily was dressed up because Blake Lively is interested in fashion (and she is very well-off so she would feel inclined to pull from her own wardrobe and connections for those reasons). I didn't read as far into that because I assumed the choice to dress Lily up was more so about creating a visually pleasing image (in a visual medium of storytelling) more than a 'literal' statement about Lily's finances but I completely understand your point about the clothes. I'm also not entirely sure about the exact financial breakdown for wardrobe in the film budget because even though the clothes Lily wears are more expensive, if Blake is wearing clothes she already has, it wouldn't impact the budget of the film the way it would to pay people who work in that department to gather/purchase/sew an original wardrobe. 🤔✂️🛍💳👠🪡🧵

      @@LadyJenevia I sat beside someone who kept telling me how “cute” the movie was. That was awkward. As much as I knew to hate Ryle, Atlas was also too unbelievable. I haven’t read it and have no clue what kind of conflict could exist in the sequel with someone so perfectly pleasant.
      I don’t remember Lily being so financially stable in the book, or fashion-focused, so it’s definitely a choice for product placement that these brands are wanting their in, especially through an actor who sells fashion well. But the heavily logo items or close up shots were just so obnoxious. It worked for Gossip Girl, not for this. And putting them on Blake’s character instead of on Jenny Slate’s or Justin Baldoni’s (because putting them on the bad guy would negatively impact sales) just tells me it was about pushing the products and not logic toward the characters in them. But this is marketed toward women, so they know what they’re doing there.
      Imagine watching this movie and now you want those lipstick heels, instead of being aware of any DV resources (I learned nothing in that regard) other than hoping you have a conveniently angelic ex boyfriend, as a takeaway.

She just blocked a bunch of comments. Ignored all the evidence and the screenshots of her son and the girls conversation.
      After we agreed as fans to stop buying her book then she decided to make an announcement. By this point it was too late. The worse part was that everything was deleted. The only thing you can find about the whole situation is that she apologized in her fb group.
      I have met her in person and was actually her friend on fb but I couldn’t support her after that and the whole clean up they did. It was the first time I had followed a drama because I really loved her books, I grew up reading them and would save every penny to buy them. I never thought you could clean something up and make it seem like it never existed.
      Also, the girl didn’t publish it online first she went to Colleen. But Colleen never responded. After she kept waiting only to get read receipts then she published it publicly.
      I don’t like to jump on SA allegations but like I said I was just watching it unfold and saw first hand how Colleen just ignored it. Her apology saying I didn’t see it, while we watched people get blocked and comments disappear was an insult to her fans intelligence.
      However, after booktook started she just blew up again.

      @@isabellae.238 all of her books romanticize abuse. They are in the romance genre...but there is abuse in all of them (correct me if I am wrong...I am just stating what I learned from others). Making it sexy...even the director said he loved it because it was a sexy story. Dumb. And her son asked a kid for a dirty pic when he was an adult and she didn't do anything...like I don't know...call the cops...when the girl tried to tell her. Parents need to call the cops if they have pedophiles as children. Then you have Blake L. acting like you can just shake off abuse....like it is just a thing you can get rid of and move on to normalcy. Sure with like a decade of therapy and a high potential for anxiety, PTSD, and depression in most cases. But they just shrug it off like it doesn't have a lasting effect. This is essentially telling men it is okay to abuse women and women if it happens it is no biggy...cause you can just move on. It is the same as when HBO would put rape in every single show and call it sex.....or make excuses for why it was in every show. They were trying to make it sexy...which gives men a horrible view of women and what we can handle..because it isn't a big deal. Writers need to actually write what this kind of violence is really like afterward, during, and the actual effects...but they don't it's always some romanticized thing...and never a massive deal. And finally, we have the fact that nothing is going to end with them...because there were no consequences for what he did...so he will just do it again...and probably to his kid. You can't just leave with the kid and end things.....the fear follows you (I have lived in Airbnbs with my kid for 6 years, just in case I have to leave quick...believe me I know....I am always ready to disappear...that is the reality).

    Thanks for this video. I have read the books, and I'm in two minds as to whether I should watch the film. One thing that I never could get past was that in the backstory, Ryle and Allysa's parents are depicted as being nice, normal people in the narrative, yet, one of them left a gun lying around in the presence of a young child, and it's never called out as being irresponsible. Also, Allysa encourages Ryle's relationship with Lily, despite being aware of how violent her brother is, yet she names her baby after him after he repeatedly abused her best friend.

      Yeah the book was RIDDLED with other details I didn't like. Lily saying that Ryle made her promise right before they get married that she'll always vote but that he doesn't care who she votes for. The fact that she never once thinks/talks through whether or not she wants to keep the pregnancy from an abusive man (I'm less picky about the outcome of her choice but to not CONTEMPLATE the options after the 'vote for whomever as long as you're voting' thing was... something). I find it very strange that people are selecting “a team” with the media stuff happening with this project, specifically about Justin not being included or even referenced by the rest of the cast. I have a problem with the fact that Ryan Reynolds wrote a scene, the rooftop scene, according to an answer Blake shared which is making me think that they tried (and succeeded) to make the project their vision. I wouldn’t be surprised if they filmed more that similar to the original book but it was edited out because it became a vanity project for Blake and Colleen. I know I sound like a hater but I’m not going to watch this film because of the author, not because of the cast drama - it’s possible this could all be manufactured to get people to talk about it because the film is good but not great. I did not enjoy the book at all so my perspective for the film was that it was an improvement by comparison. I don’t know how my feedback would have been if I just went in without the source material in mind. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

      @@LadyJenevia oh yikes, yeah i absolutely dislike her writing style. from what i know i can see why people are saying that the movie is an improvement on the books. Other than the casting and acting choices of blake lively. My main complaint of the movie was her. And after learning that the character of lily was 23 in the book i think that the actress playing the younger version should have just been lily.

    As an individual with NVLD, I may not be able to discern the nuances of abuse in this film. Perhaps the abuse portrayed is of a more subtle nature, which I struggle to perceive due to my difficulty in reading subtle messages and cues. However, I do empathize with Justin, despite this being my first encounter with his story. Strangely, I find myself immediately drawn to him in a positive light. I personally can’t jump in conclusions on Blake’s side as she might have NVLD, there are many times NVLD people are accused of a lot of negative actions when really we don’t see it IF IT’S MORE SUBTLE. but if that’s not the case for Blake, then she may be a true bully, even if I don’t see it, due to again having NVLD, having NVLD is like metaphorically being blind, but it’s your intuition that’s blind, you can’t see the subtle messages others can see.

    This particular story would have made more sense if she were much younger-perhaps she could have inherited money after her father died. The confident, naive character we see in the flashbacks could then gradually become trapped in an abusive relationship, as Ryle, being older and more financially successful, slowly erodes her confidence and makes her dependent on him. The reconnection with Atlas would have also felt more natural, as only a few years would have passed.

    I think it would have been great to show Ryle _also_ with a history of generational abuse - it would show how the cycle _didn't_ end with him, and he instead came to perpetrate exactly what he saw. Why give him such a random tragic backstory?

    • @atree4487
      @atree4487 5 місяців тому

      @@wearesatellites91 oh, I certainly agree. I'm merely saying that it would have been an interesting parallel. The other option I was going to suggest was not explaining why he was abusive at all - truthfully (and I'd even say often), you will never understand why someone treats you poorly or abuses you. There are usually precipitating events but whether you learn those is a very different question. Also, many people use history as a _justification_ - while it maybe an _explanation_ for an abuser acts so, it is never an _excuse_ . It's just an odd choice for a background, in my opinion, and the message of the book/movie could have been made better by altering it.

    Funny Story here - I never read a Collen Hoover book and in my country she is not so talked about like in the USA.
    So when the movie first come out and I saw so many American TikToks loving her what did this bookworm wanted to do?
    Read the book before watching the movie.
    So my cheap ass went to every Library in my city and this book was no were available because some silly reasons.
    When I went to my favourite library to bring my books back I ended up by the woman who I asked first and asked again. She then told me the news that the one they got was in some kind of big storage and asking for it would in the end cost more then buying the book or a ticket for the movie.
    That was the moment we decided some greater force tried everything possible to stop me and after watching your video - I am thankful I listened.😂

Justin I know from Jane the Virgin can play charm but also anger issues which are in the extreme for Ryles. Genuine question: what are the ethical questions involving actors performing a DA scene? From where I'm standing, it's similar to acting in violent or emotionally difficult scenes, correct me if I'm wrong or if I'm missing something. They are professionals, they get paid and more importantly they know what it is asked of them when they agree to a role. In this case, furthermore, the main thing of the book they're called to adapt is partner violence. I get that these scenes should be filmed in a way that the content is impactful but not gratuitous, but from an actors perspective I didn't think there was a problem. In fact, an actress who's been doing the most challenging roles involving sexual violence for decades, Isabelle huppert, has been on the record denying any affect of the material on her psyche, as it is... acting. I realize not everyone must share that view, but if it's a problem for actors I would like more conversation and information

How anyone thought this movie was a rom com after seeing the trailer is beyond me. I literally saw a few scenes in it with Ryle throwing her around and realized this was going to be intense. @@lilianaledesma7254 Basically people noticed that none of the cast was following Justin Baldoni. Then every time he came up during the carpet interviews the all the other cast members would redirect the questions. So people started noticing that he was only one talking about the core themes of the movie one of them being Domestic Violence. On the carpet interviews most of Blake Lively is talking about her husband, Wolverine and Deadpool, and barely anything about the serious topics that are depicted in the movie. Justin who is not only in the movie but the direct was allegedly butting heads with Blake Lively on how to movie should go. We also find out Ryan Reynolds’ writes a scene in the movie. So Justin Baldoni had a screening of his version of the movie and it had great reviews but because of Blake and Ryan star power (allegedly) their cut of the movie was the one that got put into the theatres. And a couple of days ago Justin was asked if he’ll do a sequel and he said “I think there are better people for that one. I think Blake Lively’s ready to direct. That’s what I think.” (This is a direct quote)
