  • Опубліковано 23 лют 2014
  • Bobby Moore was born in Barking on the 12th April 1941. Moore joined West Ham at the age of 15 in 1956 and went on to captain them for over 10 years before leaving for Fulham in 1974. In between Moore made a total of 645 appearances for West Ham scoring 27 times.
Moore captained West Ham to FA Cup triumph in 1964 beating Preston in the final, he picked the FWA Player of the Season award that year. West Ham won the European Cup Winner's Cup the following season in 1965, then the following year 1966 despite scoring in the Final- West Ham lost to West Brow in the League Cup final over two legs. Better thing were to follow that year for Moore and two of his West Ham team-mates.
Moore made his England debut in 1962, and he went on to make 108 appearances, captaining them in 90 of those games (a joint record held with Billy Wright). Moore netted twice for England against Poland & Norway respectively. He captained England in their World Cup triumph in 1966, assisting two goals of Geoff Hurst's hat-trick in England's 4-2 win against West Germany at Wembley. He was voted BBC Sports' Personality of the Year later that year.
Moore played his last England game in 1973 against Italy. He joined Fulham in 1974 and made 123 appearances including a FA Cup final appearance against his old club West Ham. He played out the remainder of his career in the USA with San Antonio & Seattle.
Moore was awarded an OBE in 1967 but was never Knighted. He was Runner Up European Player of the Year in 1970, and later voted in the FIFA All-Time World Cup team & Team of the 20th Century. He died in 1993 at the age of 51.

Immaculate footballer. Imperial defender. Immortal hero of 1966. First Englishman to raise the World Cup aloft. Favourite son of London's East End. Finest legend of West Ham United. National Treasure. Master of Wembley. Lord of the game. Captain extraordinary. Gentleman of all time.

Cracking that. I was born in East London in 1952. You either supported The Orient or West Ham. My family were all O's fans but we were in awe of B Moore. Legend. He was passing the ball out of defence when Peps grandad was a boy. There will never be another.

From a family of Orient supporters, my late Grandad born Hackney, and yep couldn't agree more. A few years later guess Glenn Roeder was the closest we got, but Bobby was in a league of his own.

The greatest gentleman on a football field. He made the game look easier than what it was. He had fantastic vision and could read the opponents moves three passes ahead. As a West Ham Season Ticket holder since 1958 I was fortunate to see him progress from his debut (unfortunately sent off) against Man Ure. His passing was superb, players didn't have to break their stride to run on to the ball. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think he is the only player to collect a different trophy 3 years running at Wembley. F A Cup (64) European Cup Winners Cup (65) World Cup (66).

Not a Hammers fan, but Moore was the best defender England ever had. As a Captain he led by example and was a magnificent ambassador for the English game. The man lifted the World Cup for us. I'd have had him in my team anytime. Pele said he was the best defender he played against. The FA only admitted after he died that they should have done more for him after he retired. Shame on them.
    R.I.P. Bobby Moore.

Bobby and Trevor Brooking were two of only three people I have asked for their autograph. He was my hero in my teens. People who did not watch him week in and week out could only get some idea of what a great player and captain he was.His ball control, passing and vision were on a different level to all other footballers I have seen. He is by head and shoulders the best defender I have ever seen.

Don't get me wrong of course I'm proud we won it, but let's be honest, we can't keep going on about something that's happened only once, fifty odd years ago.
