One of my mates is the Grandson of Jimmy Murphy, who was assistant manager to Matt Busby for nearly 25 years. He recited me a story where Jimmy was asked "Who was the best player you ever coached?" Jimmy responded "Duncan Edwards" and the guy who asked the question replied with "Not Georgie Best?" to which Jimmy responded "No. George Best didn't need coaching."
A truly sublime answer. Man was gifted, if only he was born 40 years later he'd be 24 and the best in the buisness. Smooth pitches, lighter balls. I shudder to think...
@@Flame19judgement if we had him 40 years later on, Ronaldo would never be in the spotlight

I'm a Chelsea fan, I was at Stamford Bridge on one of those clips, George Best started his dribble in his own half and went straight pass the whole Chelsea team and scored, we all applauded.
Wow! Respect man. Respect to Osgood and David Webb -- from Aussie English football fan.
forestsoceansmusic thank you, respect to you too
That was in the league cup at Old Trafford
The great Alan Hudson was offended when anyone said that George was not the best player ever. Hudson, a great himself simply would not listen to it. To him George was a step above everyone........and Alan Hudson knew a bit about football.
It was normal to do that way back then.
"I spent a lot of my money on alcohol, women and fast cars ... As for the rest - I just wasted it."

" I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. The rest I just squandered "
“If I had to choose between dribbling past 5 players and scoring from 40 yards at Anfield or shagging miss world, it would be a hard choice. Thankfully, I’ve done both.”
George Best
@Matt Ochi, lucky man he was
Matt ochi that's the irish humour in play their he'd pick scoring at the kop end for man united anyday
In his own words.
What’s crazy is that so little of the matches he played were even caught on film. Makes me wonder how many incredible moments we didn’t get to see
Most people didn't have tvs in UK in early sixties
Gentleman this guy had Ronaldo and Messi all mixed up...one of the greatest, if not the one
Even fewer saw the great Duncan Edwards. My dad said he may have been the greatest ever!
Exactly, which is why the GOAT of all time debates are rather meaningless. Also, the deconstructing analysis only goes so far (Messi and Maradona were one footed, etc), but what we can say with safety is that for about 6 or 7 seasons Best was one of the best and probably the best when Pele declined a little. And that he had it all: close control, two footed, great vision, acceleration, two footed, good header of the ball, great tackler too, and great shot from either foot. He was a complete player.
I got to see him quite a few times at OT. I feel l increasingly lucky the older I get LOL.
@@Muninman Everything about Best amazes me but what amazes me the most is his balance, The way he makes cuts on a dime and when he turns, it's like a skier leaning into the turn. They foul the shit out of him and he still keeps his balance and the ball. Hell, there's one where he is fouled, hits the ground, and bounces back up with control of the ball as if he had fallen on a trampoline and just popped up. Now the guy would have stayed on the ground, got carted off, and would be demanding a red. His balance was incredible.
I can't believe he did this in that era, where the ball was a cannon ball, the pitch was Sunday league level
Yes many players from that era were ahead of their time
@@jibrana.r.6578 Defenders used to be tough as hell back then and you could kick players and get away with it.
Some defenders may look sunday league level, but their tackles were not. Some of these challenges would see them lifetime banned by today's standards. George Best never withdrew from a challenge. Not a single fucking one.
Ole needs to play this to his gay pogba clan and say astro turf or not look at this guy
Northern Ireland for ya
He was the best in the world for about 4 years until 'outside interests' distracted him. In those days cameras were not at all the games as they are now. I remember him playing at Southampton one evening in a league game, (1969 I think) and no one got near him that night. He scored a fabulous goal from outside the box into the top corner. Ended 3-0 If I remember rightly, when Saints played at the old Dell stadium.
A girl from my class at school ran on the pitch and got his autograph and then managed to get back into the crowd chased by three stewards. She proudly showed his autograph in class ! Great days, glad I was around to witness them !
You are very lucky to have seen him play definitely one of the best players to ever kick a ball
I remember seeing him play brilliantly many times at Old Trafford, your right a lot of what he did in the 60s wasn't filmed so is list to folk lore. He got virtually no protection off the refs, played with skill and finesse on cabbage fields with a heavy wet leather ball.

How old are you man 💀
@@SEELE_1 68, So I'm 9 years older than Best was when he died.. As he said himself just before he died, ''remember me for the football, not the rubbish in the papers'' And we do George, you can count on it..
George Best rest in peace, we the Brazilians loves you. You were one of the kind.I had the pleasure to play a game in Vancouver for(older Timers) besides George Best, i must confess that it was the best moment of my life in sports. He was a gentleman, still very skillful player in his 38s and oh boy after the game, we went to a Pub in Richmond bc, he really enjoy some beers.George, you Pele, Maradona made so many people so happy to watch you guys to play. Football is not just kick and run but the creativities, the body movements, the ball control and most of all the finesse
oribago
You mentioned briljant player of football. However non of them changed football. There is only one who did.
I always wondered what would happen if George Best and Pele played for the same team together, it would have been 1 amazing partnership
great story george was a one off on and off the pitch
@@47rintin1ok..a brilliant player.
Imagine George playing today on the good pitches, with less fouls permitted. What a player.
Good pitches, and a lighter ball, softer ball to allow swerve and bend and dip to a shot. While Maradona's played quick one-twos, Best played his one-twos off the standing foot of the last defender. It is how he beat the last defender to score his goal in Man Utd's Wembley European Cup final win. Live commentators could only say "Best is through!" Ask players who were there when TV cameras weren't .
I saw him play several times he could make the best defenders look as if they had 2 left feet.. His balance was second to none
Very true but you also have to look at the flip side. The habits that Georgie had. How long do you think he'd last in today's game where the players are basically Olympic level fitness and conditioning where they are faster, cover more ground and play more games over a year than any time previously. That includes defenders who dedicate their lives to conditioning and are strong, fast, and now required to be technical. Also today where analysis is done to the Nth degree about a players strengths and weaknesses and entire systems are set up to neutralize the weapons of the opponent. Listen to Jose Mourinho's entire system to stop Messi in 2010. In Pele's era, you saw his abilities only when he arrived in your city.
George was a gifted generational player no doubt, but if you want to compare era's you have to look at both sides of the coin
His play style back then was literally decades ahead of others
fr
No lie bro
Exactly
Bro was Ronaldinho before Ronaldinho.
True, his play looks very simple to us now but then you realise he was playing in the 70’s, it’s crazy.
He may not have had the most successful career and he never played in the finals of a major international tournament but even as a Liverpool fan I can acknowledge that he is probably the most naturally talented/skillful footballer ever seen In Britain.
@tigerarmyrule You have to give credit where it's due regardless of who you support, even if it's for a rival team. Whether it's George Best or whoever. Some football fans can't do that though, even though they know deep down otherwise which is just ridiculous and childish, school playground like behaviour. Fans of all teams are guilty of this.
@Ultimate Nova Creep I don't know about the greatest footballer that's ever walked the earth, I wouldn't say that. For me that would have to be Maradona, pains me to say it. Either way how do you accurately gauge who is the best player ever? Very difficult to answer as there are so many variables in football. Basically it's all subjective and down to opinion.

Brilliant. Crunching tackles, stays on his feet.. Not a dive in sight.. So refreshing in this day of players diving and manufacturing free kicks and penalties
Bear in mind that unlike the blanket TV coverage we have for all top games nowadays, the sensational video footage we have of George Best is only a fraction of what he must have done on the football pitch without it being filmed. The rest survives in the memory of the lucky ManU fans who attended the games he played in where only the attendant crowd witnessed his peerless skills. Personal demons aside, he is the most naturally gifted player to grace the game and few come close to the talent this lovely man was blessed with!
Very good point.
So true. Even this compilation has to re-use certain clips, simply because games weren't covered like they are now so there's not as much footage of Besty as we'd like. And even when United/Northern Ireland games were covered the footage often just got lost.
@Ultimate Nova Creep 'Ugly' is probably an overstatement. Successful dribbling is never ugly.
But there's something about the way Best dribbles, the way his upper body is totally still, his arms slightly raised for balance, while his lower body does most of the movement, that makes him look more like he's in total control. You see the same thing with Maradona, Ronaldo Nazario, players like that. They have minimal upper body movement, and when there is upper body movement it's always deliberate, for a specific purpose. Also, when they started dribbling it always looked like they knew exactly what they were doing and had a path laid out ahead of them. Once they started running with the ball they tended not to stop or slow down. It looked so decisive.
Whereas, with players like Messi, Neymar, even Ronaldinho, their upper bodies are throwing off feints and bobs all the time, just random twitches and jerks, and their style of dribbling involves a lot of stops and starts. It makes them look less elegant, less decisive. than the likes of Best, Ronaldo, Maradona, etc.
Just my opinion of course. I used to play a lot of football and I was a dribbler. There was no feeling more glorious than beating two, three, four players in a row. It was always dribbling that made me fall in love with football and what I loved most was players who made dribbling look easy and elegant.
This is the main point I would make too, especially since his pace was a great asset in his early days. like the goal against Benfica showed in one of the clips above. He got by without it in later years due to his imperious balance, incredible strength, brilliant technique and fast footwork. Maradona had the footwork, Cruyff the balance, Ronaldo the technique and speed...so add them together, and you have George Best...simply the Best there has been. And it was noted he could play all positions in the team to an elite level, which tells you something about his all round skill base, along with his innate football wisdom. No player has ever brought joy to me like him, in fact I barely watch the game, sooner play, but if he was playing, I'd be glued to the set, no doubt, but like the man said, nearly all footage of Best was lost due to the lack of coverage back then. Sad, but true, so enjoy the few clips we have, including some of his games for N Ireland.
Same with Pele, Alfredo de Stefano, Garrincha
"If I had to choose between European best player award or miss world, it would've been a difficult one. Luckily, I got both." - G. Best

One of the old school players who would rip some of today's backlines apart. Amazing player!
Unlike today's players Best was fearless, he played as if he were enjoying a game on the local park in Belfast. He played with a ball much heavier than modern balls & the pitches were like paddy fields by October. He was an imp of a player with breathtaking balance & skill. I couldn't guess what he'd be worth today.

There's a couple of very short clips amongst these, showing him playing for NI against Scotland in October '67. Dad finished his night shift in the mill and took me and Ian over on the ferry from Heysham. Bad crossing on the Duke of Lancaster, full of jocks - orangemen with the big drums and all the songs there in the canteen. Dad knew the words and sang along and him a taig. Whole place stank of beer, smoke and sick.
Bloke at the gangway in Belfast selling rosettes from a box round his neck, so Dad got me a Celtic one and let me put my scarf on now.
Quick say hello and some eats at my Aunt Pat's, then down town walk to Windsor Park. On way we turned a corner and Dad tore the rosette off my coat, put it on his. A bloke in a trilby and raincoat stopped us, a few quick words to Dad and we all went in this bar. He said it was not a good idea to wear the rosette. He said things were hotting up and it wasn't long now till it kicked off.
Anyway we got to the match OK and what a performance from George. Magical touches every time he got the ball - and it was clear he really did want the ball that day. Only one goal and that from Dave Clements of Coventry.
Still got the programme. Marvellous, unforgettable day.

Best was excellent but many with today's level have surpassed him. Hazard comes to mind. Still best excellent, though. Denilson was also much better in his prime than Best.
I absolutely am a fan of george best. He was such a complete footballer. His dribbling skills according to me are the best ever!!!
+Zaid Ahmed in my opinion better then messi. Lionel just pass throught the others, but Geo Best made all the players confused with his speed dribling
George Best was a thing of Beauty One Of The All Time Greats.
It's hard for this generation to understand how good this bloke was. Everyone in the professional game plays like this now, and many better, but it's about context. No one played like this back then, it was a different game, they played with a 12 tonne ball made of concrete, in four foot deep mud, in leather hobnail boots. That's why Best was so good and before his time.
And don't forget the fouls the referees let by in those days.
And walked to school barefoot in 3 foot of snow after milking the cows slopping the pigs feeding the chooks and washing the dishes. Well come on, your post sounds like that...but then again I do agree
100% correct.
"And many better"? No one plays better than Best imho
Who do think is better these days?
When you consider he was playing on grass rougher than most garden lawns and facing tackling that was agricultural or even brutal his skill was simply amazing.
The greatest footballer I have ever seen..
A one man football team....
You can sense the fear in the opposition when he's got the ball at his feet.
RIP, Georgie...
Although I'm a Moss Side City fan use to watch him play late 60's, was a big fan of his style of play, respect him for his contribution to the game, great player to watch.
Sou Brasileiro, teve vários jogadores ,habilidosos no Brasil, mas George Best foi um fenômeno!!!
Best looks like a combination of Cruijff, Messi, Beckenbauer and Suarez. He has all their skills and then some of his own. WOW! What a player!
He had their skills or they have his skills?
Underrated
Same level with maradona messi romario ronaldo(bazil)
These guys’s dribble lead the circumstance around the ball.
Different with others which need a empty space.
I'll add R. Baggio but I agree
In this very exclusive elite it's all about pace variations and ball control, not pure running speed. Speed of thought > speed in running
My God!!! I can say this for the first time ever, I have never once in my life been a soccer fan or have i ever even like soccer but just watching this Highlight Reel of George Best i think im gonna give soccer a chance! This is amazing highlights and George Best is simply stunning in this footage and freaking talented as hell
A class footballer, could've played 2020 and still be a world beater, big love to Georgie Best from a Leeds fanatic.
It's hard to be great in 2020 tbh
@@benardboateng8291 😂🤣😅😅😅 who told that crap dude? Like seriously? You have VAR, yellow and red cards, subtitutions, better boots, a ball that weights less (it is almost like a girls ball), better training, best techniques to recover after a match, marketing, protection over the skilful player and all, r u freaking kidding me?
Maradona's favourite player of all time is George best. Says it all really
David Forster and Pele said George Best was the best player he has ever seen live I think
Pele said he was the greatest in the world and also said if he could watch one footballer it would be Best
David Forster Maradona's favourite player is Ricardo Bochini.
maradona favourite player is lot of players lol
Maradona also said that Rivelino is one of his influences
He will never be forgotten🥺❤️
One of the best ever and I fell privileged to have seen him play although I was very young - remember too that George played when opposing players would literally try a assassinate him on the pitch. True legend.
Just imagine how he'd be with the modern ball, pitches and today's less physical defending.
reminds me of robben tbh with his dribbling ability both were wingers would say messi too but messi is just insane and another level imo
"less physical defending" classic idiot.
@@Farklele literally saw that comment and my jaw dropped cause of the idiocy that came out of this person's mind
And a manager like Alex Ferguson to keep him on the straight and narrow.
@@gabrielcarreira7316 defending is way less physical now than it was in the 60s and 70s
No one played like this player, even Pele said he was the best...
Well indeed, he is the Best.
pele is a crackhead he says that about everyone
@@Iman-sr7ih LMAO 😂
@@Iman-sr7ih Not about Maradona tough
Maradona was a crackhead
He's a dribbling monster
Watching this I noticed his close control/quick feet, he is always slightly bent over to centre his balance and make it easier to shift his body. Fantastic technique
George THE BEST.......RIP 🇮🇹
Reallynot Tommy I know the story of George Best. Italian is me .....Merry Christmas from Milano
the best ever! a lot times when i see cruyff dribling reminds me of best, a legend for sure!! will never be forgotten to whoever got the chance to see him,i didn't only videos like this one
I'm a Chelsea fan and remember seeing him play for Fulham v Chelsea on Good Friday 1977 when Fulham beat Chelsea 3-1 and he scored with a brilliant volley. It was worth seeing my team lose just to watch Besties magic, he didn't fail to deliver that day.
Think about this. This was 45 years before anyone ever thought of this, ever thought of these angles. True visionary xx
His control is the best I’ve ever seen
Great video ! One of the most exciting player of football history.
+jojobabylone Thanks for the support! George Best is my favourite player ahaha
One of mine too. Up there with Messi,Ronaldihno and Zlatan!
best349 Just my opinion. Messi is the best ever.
best349 Ask me the most random question about soccer! I FUCKING DARE YOU!
best349 I've since tons, that is why it am here.
George could do it all. Remember watching him in 1970 when Man U played very badly (defensive errors) and lost 4-0 at Ipswich but Best was constantly back in midfield and defence working himself into the ground trying to get them back into the game. Yes, he was even a hard worker to as apart from his natural skill. He didn't just stand on the wing waiting for the ball and not tracking back. He would have been brilliant in ANY modern team today ?
