Jellyfin is still my favorite media player. It's basically Emby but open source. This also means you get way more than you do with Plex when comparing Jellyfin to the free version of plex.
If you're new to media servers, you'll find our tutorial easy to follow and understand. If you're a pro, you'll appreciate how straightforward our approach is. I'll be coming back to my own video when it's time to upgrade, so this is basically like watching my notes to self.

I love all your tutorials Logan. Been following you for over 10 years. Keep it up.
I absolutely love your media library. Pretty much everything you have are either media I’ve bought or I’m working on getting. So thanks, looks like I have to reference as I go.
Straightforward video. None of the nonsense all of the other guides on here have. Thank you.
Awesome guide thank you so much! I got my friend to set up a jellyfin server too with this guide super helpful!
Great tutorial! Had my stream up and running in no time. Thanks for posting.
You guys have the best timing. I just built my new pc earlier this week and was planning on making a jellyfin server out of the old one. Can't wait to get started.
howd it go? setting one up for my spot right now
Boom! I knew Logan would know how to fix my anime library in Jellyfin. I did have to delete the library and rebuild it and I'm still working on cleaning things up but it's way better than before. Also you have pretty good taste in anime and gave me a few ideas of things to add to my collection.
This is Beautiful! It's a great start for someone who's just getting into self hosting and moving to jellyfin from plex. Loved your video about retroarch/retro gaming starter guide too. Keep up the Good work Logan!
Would love it if you could please do a guide to setup Jellyfin for remote access. Would like some security advice about this before attempting. I use a QNAP
Nice timing, just as I started looking into Jellyfin this pops up
Very useful informations. Thank you. Great video!
Thanks, just jumped from Plex to Jellyfin, it just works out of the box!!!
Dude, You rock ! Now I can go drop a grand on new NAS lol - Thanks the most in depth set up guide I have found utilizing both Jellyfin and ASUSTOR !
Just what I needed. Thanks!
Man i finally found you again after realizing you weren't in my subbox anymore...
Exactly the video i needed :D
Good stuff. TY for shearing. Can videos be played in a playlist ? And if so can it be random shuffle ?
Thank you for this video !
Will use this guide for my media server 😊
If only this video came out like month ago haha. I'll probably be rewatching this video few times to get a grasp on everything.
Thanks for video! It would be cool if you could demonstrate how to set up outside of home network usage.
This is not a complaint, but I think there is a slight audio delay.. just a heads up. Great video!
Been trying to move to this from Plex but would like to get TV recordings ironed out first.
A nice plugin would be handbrake for recordings, it looks like JellyFin already supports Nvidia NVENC, Intel QSV, AMD VCE/VAAPI, and even Apple Video Toolbox
The problem i have with TrueNAS Scale is that Ryzen 7000 is not supported yet for GPU passthrough for kubernetes, yes i can pass it through to a VM, but that leaves me headless in case of any issues, it also robs me of RAM if the VM doesnt need all the RAM
Ideally, i'd like to have PCIe TV tuners as well to share with both Plex and Jellyfin
Very cool, man! I'm on Plex and was thinking about switching to something else. I'm looking at what the others have to offer and I like your video.
was trying to setup jellyfin on my synology nas with docker and was having a bit of trouble. came to youtube to search and this was uploaded and in my subscriptions lol.
Thank you the great video. One question when viewing the metadata for the My Collection of videos does it also have the ability to show Rotten Tomatoes scores? Thanks
Thanks. This is helpful
Hi , love the video. Im using the same nas and wana use hardware encoding. can you make an video about how to enable this? Would be realy helpfull.
Great tutorial. Also, I love Roujin Z
I wish UA-cam recommended more of your videos. I love your personality.
I don't miss that troll that you worked with but I do miss that kinda show.
I have a couple questions:
1. Will this still work if you don’t have a NAS
2. How would you setup Wrestling so that it will find the right metadata
great video, damn i just remember i didnt finish yet to watch this slayer anime
Have you tried Kodi for local Library play back vs Jellyfin? I’m somewhat interested in jellyfin, but I suppose I’m wondering why I said switch from kodi.
I've used jellyfin in the past and I really love it for it's simplicity, but man I have a high tendency to mess up it's database. It really does not like when you remove files, for example movies from folders added, even when it rescans the directory it will orphan the movies in the database without removing them. So you'll basically have movies or whatever still displaying although the files have been removed and the only way to remove them from displaying is to go into the database files itself which is a hassle. This was my only qualm with jellyfin (also my database getting fat pretty quick heh - one thing I did for this is to create a symbolic link to the database folder to a drive where I don't mind how fat it gets. You can actually put jellyfin on quite a low end machine as long as it's not set to transcode for you, and only serve the files. Even works on a raspberry pi 4 :)
PS - using the client is highly recommended, it's quite fast at loading the media compared to third party video players
What version were you using? I delete stuff all the time and have never had this issue.
I'm still using iTunes/Apple TV app with Family Share for my media server, but I think I'm ready to switch. Lets say I have Jellyfin set up to keep my media organized for me. How would I add new media in the future? Is it drag and drop like iTunes, or do I create folders on my NAS/server manually? Thanks in advance for any help.
Channels Plus DVR server will give you live channels, including OTA from your antenna or HD Homerun, as well as incorporating Pluto, Stirr, Sling, Samsung, etc among it's EPG. You can record and schedule record everything on your own HD. It also loads your local libraries, and all this for your local network or remote access. I also use Plex, because I've had it for years, but Channels does everything I need for entertainment.
muy buen video felicidades, mi experiencia fue que nunca pude reproducir archivos de musica DSD y la organizacion de los archivos de musica no se muestran en carpetas
Hi! Did you know why sometimes, when I see an episode, the episode stop at the middle and jellyfin start the next one? Is it hardware issue?
I've the exact same setup as you, and subbed because of good quality content. Now a question. Can you make a video about how to set up the player correctly to play content stutter free for 4k. I've been playing around to get is to work good and use hardware encoding. Got it working good now, but I think people would miss a lot of settings to get it working good, and I can probably improve stuff myself still.
It's more complicated for this installation because docker is involved. But I've found that my client PC is so powerful it doesn't matter .. however my exercise PC is lacking....I do get stuttering so I don't watch 4k in there. I might do another video on that
If the media is being Direct Played, it should basically just come down to how powerful the client is. A PC or the Nvidia Shield Pro will Direct Play basically anything in my experience.
If you're saying slowdowns, I'd suggest going into the Dashboard and hovering over the i icon on whatever is playing so you can see if it's transcoding or not. If it's transcoding, you want hardware transcoding enabled and set up properly if the server supports it, but it will never be as fast as DirectPlay in my experience.
@@teksyndicatecan u ask u a question how do I find a server address for jellyfin
Any instructions on how to use Nvidia for hardware transcoding? Both in Windows and Linux server? Would be really helpful.
Thanks for this video @Tek Syndicate!
i have the problem, when i add new movies or so, my other movie data (metadata and pics) are are chaned again to the wrong pics etc... can someone help me plz? :)
its nice how jellyfin lets you have more control over your folder, question when in come to movie with anime if its a movie that has to do with show do you just put in same folder (ie the anime show folder) or do you still put it into the movie folder. its funny off hand you the only one who has address anime with the different media programs. side note i got get better for watching out for the anime movies
I couldn't say for sure as it would probably depend on the series and metadata for that series, but what I would do is say for example you have a movie that slots in between season 2 and season 3, I would title the movie as "Anime Show S02E11 Movie Title" (assuming there are only 10 episodes in season 2). You would probably have to set all the information (description, sort order, poster, etc) manually, but at least it would be in the same spot as the series is and in order.
That's a good question. While I don't know that, I will say that if you put everything in one library (as in, regular movies and anime movies in the same folder), you have to be more careful about the order of your scanner plugins and the matching rules, because if you don't, you might end up with it mistaking the 2002 Count of Monte Cristo for that Count of Monte Cristo anime with the weird art style.
hey idk if you read this haha but one question:
what about animes with many seasons and older seasons? for example fruits basket has season 1 from 2001 and a "remaster" season 1 from 2019 with 2 extra seasons (2020 and 2021) with a movie, how do you manage this in ONE folder? are you making a new folder for every season?
example:
fruits basket shows one picture for all 4 seasons and movie, and if i go into the "fruits basket" anime (where i can see season 1,2,3) and click the 3 dots it doesnt show "identify" does that mean you cant give seasons their specific anidb id? :c
Jellyfin is incredible.
Where do you get all of those movies/ shows from? Can we just put them in an old office computer if you don't have a nas?
I'm interested in how one can set up Jellyfin for remote access. Maybe on a VPS, but I tried to install it and I bet it needs a somewhat beefy CPU and maybe a GPU for video transcoding, so it worked horribly.
Also, locally I use Kodi. I wish there was a way to seamlessly integrate the two, because I much prefer Kodi's native player than having to use some web browser video player...
the jellyfin addon for kodi will populate your jellyfin library in the Kodi movies section
Can you please make a video on playlists please? I am switching from plex and want to have many TV shows shuffel and make a music playlist. Thanks for all the info on Jellyfin
How do i add a USB SSD to Jellyfin on my pi4.
I don't know how to mount it with Jellyfin. No auto mount?
With OMV everything worked fine.
Very nice video.. but i need some simpler info... Help me please.. i installed on my server computer, on windows. Created libraries and users. Now i simply need to know how to access from the apps om my tvs on the same network...
@teksyndicate Any plans on making a video about Remote Access with public IP? 4:01
Just a heads up the is now a native jellyfin app for Synology nas running DSM7 no need for docker as docker is only on the high end NAS
So good for J series and synology play series + the app on LG TV and your set. But I did not know about jellyfin file structure
and I'd like to say thank you TS.
Oh good! I had so many issues with it before on Synology that I just used the asustor... Which is also plenty fast
Hmm I may try it on my Synology.
thumbs up for focusing on Ninja Scroll
Good ebening Count Dracula
Great video , can you make one how to make it accessible not only from home network?
Can you please do a video on the remote access of Jellyfin please?
I have a WD Cloud Mirror gen 2 NAS. My media is saved in /Public/iTunes. A post in WD forum shares a short guide to install Jellyfin trough a docker and the guide include a process to map his media that being place in another drive. I don't understand his guide. Anybody could share a more detailed step by step guide?
My jellyfish on TrueNas won't scan subdirectories. I've given the user 'apps' read access already. Thoughts?
I'd like to try it but is there native clients without dedicated hardware? For example, Plex had apps on Samsung Tizen, LG WebOs, Sony, etc. and it's a must for non tech-savvy people, at least in my use case.
There is an app on Roku if that's what you mean
It's device dependent. The newest webOS TVs running webOS 6 have a Jellyfin app, but my 2019 webOS TV running webOS 5 does not. But whether it's Jellyfin or Plex, the TV apps are pretty garbage compared to dedicated hardware apps. They are the least maintained, always the most out of date, the least feature rich, etc. Do yourself a favor and just get an Nvidia Shield Pro. Both Jellyfin and Plex work flawlessly on it, but I will advise for the Jellyfin app to go into Settings and change the player from the default one to libvlc, as the default player sucks and will force a transcode if you enable PGS subtitles. libvlc will direct play anything you can throw at it in my experience.
On the mobile side of things, you have to be careful about native vs web wrapper clients. So for example, on Android you want Findroid instead of Jellyfin and on iOS you want Swiftfin instead of Jellyfin. Infuse will work perfectly on iOS as well, but the lifetime subscription to enable full features is like $100 which is pretty stupid IMO.
How did you get from the site the host??? for the media player?
unrelated to the vid you have excellent taste my friend Taiho Shichau zo and slayers? very cool
Can you use an external hard drive and run jeelyfin through a ps4 and work the same way
Cracking video, very helpful. ~
At the moment I'm using my laptop as the Jellyfin Server with an external hard drive, in the living room I have an Android box with Jellyfin installed and it connects to my laptop. What I've found using the Android device is that it struggles to play mkv and certain mp4 files plus some don't have sound. I find myself having to recode the video files. Can anyone tell me what the issue might be when playing these files using the Android Box. Is there another way of streaming it from my laptop to the my TV
When using Jellyfin Android app, there is good option in settings. Settings -> Client Settings -> Video player type -> External player. When you try to play movie, it offers you to use another app for streaming selected video. I installed and use VLC as external player and it works perfectly. Had problems with subtitles. Now works great.
@@cakemomentum88 Many thanks for your reply and help, will have a look at that next time I'm in
At this point the main thing keeping me on Plex is how easy sharing is. Jellyfin has definitely come a long way since I first saw it. I'm sure I'll send up switching to it eventually once Plex does something really stupid.
IMO, Plex has already done a bunch of stupid things. I left them years ago and just used vlc connected to a samba share. Couple years ago I found JF through a podcast and although it was like a beta back then, its come a long way.
Frankly sharing Jellyfin isn't terribly difficult. I use Tailscale to connect the user to my PC and avoid exposing my computer to the internet. Because it's a VPN it has the added benefit of keeping my cell provider from seeing that I'm streaming video and limiting me to 480p.
@wesleyson21 this is the way. Tailscale + Jellyfin is lovely.
how do I host jellyfin and still keep my VPN on, I have been skimming through pages and pages for about 6 hours already with the ocasional getting up and grabbing some coffee and I cant seem to find a solution, ty in advance
I use realdebrid. Is there a way to configure Jellyfin with it?
Yeah, I've been a long time plex user and I do generally like it. Having recently moved way out in the middle of rural nowhere and having a very spotty internet connection, plex has started to really tick me off. Internet connection down? Better hope a kid wasn't the last one logged into the TV because now you can't switch users until the internet comes back on. Even worse, after so long without a connection it seems to refuse to work at all. Hey, look, I didn't pay $100 for a software that doesn't work. Not to mention that the plex app on my roku TV in my bedroom crashes all the frickin time.
So I've been slowly working toward moving toward jellyfin. There's still plenty of features for plex I like better though, and in a world were I still lived with good internet access I may have not even gotten annoyed enough yet.
Violence Jack? Wow.
If Identify isn't there did I do something wrong, has it been removed? I'm doing version 10.8.13
I'm stuck at no available plugins in catalog tab..
I'm running five 8 TB drives in Raid-z2 in TrueNAS and have 21.4 TB of usable space. I've held off on installing something like Jellyfin or Plex because I can just stream directly from my NAS just by opening a video. I suppose it would be nice to have a "Netflix-style" interface but I honestly don't need it. I also like knowing that my TrueNAS setup is barebones and doesn't have any additional features installed. I wonder if anyone else has decided to just use the NAS the way I am...
I did something similar for a while, but it's honestly nice to use jellyfin and it's pretty lightweight. But functionality wise it isn't better, just nicer
Will this work on a Firestick?
Where do you guys download movies n shows from
Where can I get all movies files just for private only .
Cant get the subtitles to work even though i followed the steps, when i press the download icon it shows download is scheduled or queued? and nothing happens, also constant audio issues were the voices are almost muted while the background noise is still audible.I dont know if its a video format problem but i have non of these issues on plex.
Did you get an account on open subtitles and then put your info into the plugin screen?
Try going to administration>dashboard>advanced>scheduled tasks. Under libraries, you will see "download missing subtitles". I've had to start that several times on mine, but I assumed it was because of my poor internet connection, but still something you could check out. Also, I seem to recall that it can only download so many subtitle tracks per day so if you're bringing a large library it could take some time.
@@VikingPickles thanks. But now i run into another problem. The CC close caption is shown along with the subtitles i downloaded but they do not show when i play the movie.
I've never touched Plex. How's it fare compared to KODI?
Creating music playlists on Jellyfin is so painful. Why is there no multi-select to do it? It's so bad that it's a deal breaker for me for Jellyfin outright.
Can I use this on my windows laptop to stream media to my tv? I don't have a NAS
Yes, when I first started using plex that's how I ran it. Plus side of having a laptop as a server, it has a built in monitor and keyboard for troubleshooting. It would be best to use ethernet though.
Sadly stuck with Plex because it’s the only one that works with SONOS for music.
Just like EMBY. I believe Jellyfin is the free version of emby. I had Jellyfin on my Server, it was causing nothing but troubles, always hanging, crashing, High Process. I only had 1 user (myself), I gave no access to nobody, internet activity was so busy, that was why the High Process. When forced end tast, internet activity slowed down. I decided to give a try to EMBY, everything was smooth, no high process, no high internet activity. Since 2018, I don`t have headaches anymore about my media. Since then, I have Emby Premiere Lifetime. The only positive thing I see on Jellyfin has more plugins then Emby.
why do I have localhost instead of an ip address in the url?
hello, tell me if there is a plugin for jellyfin coverart that converts posters like emby Thank you
Could you be more specific. What do you mean, "converts posters?" Jellyfin has several metadata sources that will download movie posters and such automatically or manually. I like the fanart plugin a lot
can't get past login on most recent version of jf
I am strggling to acces my serever on my android?
From where did u downloaded all these anime?
Use all the *arr software, absolute game changers
it asks me to login but i never registered?
Yes. I have watched Roujin Z. It's a fantastic movie. Incredible animation.
Yah a real classic imo, great concept too with themes that remain relevant.
So how can my friends go on my jellyfin and see my movies from my computers external hard drive?...
Too bad installing is the most difficult part. Sitting here trying to install on a Windows machine and it seems like it intentionally makes itself a pain in the ass. About ready to look yet again for alternatives.
Great video but you skipped https setup :(
merge version needs a plugin? why don't merge movies by default? one low def and one high def should be in the same movie icon
Do this have 3d movies?
Jellyfin only uses the media you stored on your server, it can have 3D movies if you have them already.
i tested jelly fin on a folder in a portable drive n it just fried it -_-
I find Emby better. Cleaner interface, faster imports (i think). I know it costs money for apps and hardware transcoding.
The identify thing doesn't properly works...
I'd give jellyfin a go but it does not seem viable to me when my friends and family all connect to my server through the plex app on their smart tv :(
You can run both, that's what I'm doing. You could use Jellyfin for yourself and just leave Plex running for the people you're sharing it with. I don't have anyone else watching mine and only keep Plex running for comparison purposes.
the question is, where to download all that anime? xd
They never get the slayers right the first time and Claymore always come back wrong! 😭😭
How are yours titled? They got slayers right for me
why do people like the fan are so dang much? is the default art bad?
Jellyfin is actually a good idea. But only a good idea. The app isn't not even launching on mac, is that too much asking ? (even with all the stupid workaround reading reddit post, even using the terminals), Spent a 2 days of my life wasting my time with this, opening port on my windows machine and so on. I like the philosophy of open source, but man open source software except blender are so much nervous breakdown prone.
Imagine losing 20To of movie...
