Started using Plex about 10 years ago. Once they started charging people, I switched to Jellyfin about 3 years ago. Haven't looked back. It handles everything I throw at it. All my home videos, ripped videos, photos, digitized slides, books, etc. I installed it on my lowest power computer. A single core processor with 2 Gigs of RAM, 12TB drive, running Lubuntu headless. Haven't shut it down in 3 years. I installed it by hand along with Nginx, running another service that stored magazines. Glad to see I'm not alone. Thanks for the video.
You can use the included windows 7 or 8 key to activate windows 10. It's worth noting that if the computer came with windows 8 or 10 the key is embedded in the UEFI firmware, and windows will grab it automatically.
It's embedded in the firmware unless you built it yourself. Then you do have to buy a key. That's why you should just use Linux like they are.

I use openmediavault myself however I also have other things shared like emulators and rom sets. I have 2x 8tb externals and 2x 18tb externals connected to it. For playback I have an apple tv with infuse pro and a zidoo z9x rather than a transcode setup like yours though there is nothing wrong with that setup it's all about preference.
I’ve run similar hardware in the form of DellOptiplex i7 with 16gb ram and a bunch of 8tb drives. Worked perfectly and I would recommend looking at Emby software running on Windows.

I love the idea. I bought a NAS and found out quick that it is great for a file server but streaming is not it's forte. I then watch this video and a few others and remembered that I had an old gaming PC with an Intel i7 processor. I'm like 😊. It only has 16gig of memory, but it is an i7. LOL the video cards only have 1gig on each card. I still use it but mostly just sits there. I used it in the past for ripping and encoding dvds to divx. Hehe
I needed the reminder for sure. It took me a little to remember how to drive map, but all is well. Next is setting up an Ubuntu server and Plex on it. Ill use the NAS to store the 4k Movies and the gaming PC as a Linux Plex server 😊.
I'm hoping that it will be okay to run IPTV including OTA with Plex. I was looking at some of my other choices and was like no way I'm spending 1k on a media server. Good lawd... 😮

I built a HTPC with jellyfin client running on an asus platform. In my case i added an M-Audio 1010LT 16gb ram and a video card from Nvidia.
I connected this to a dell server with 8 drives running truenas with a jellyfin server app.
works like a charm (until i screw it up)

I started off with a setup like this. Recently went all in on a new build in a fractal design define 7xl loaded up with x5 10tb wd red hdds.
Specs for the system are overkill for a media server but I use it for full access to my steam library for couch gaming on a 65 inch lg c2.
Also have big box running on it for all my retro emulation needs. Makes for a pretty good all in one entertainment unit.
Can you share your Plex access, kind sir? Making such request on platforms like Reddit are liable for a ban or at the very least, ridicule by the people.
I wonder if there are forums or some other kind of social media platform where like minded media-philes can share their hobby.
jinx. For 11 years I've had a Raid 5 WD RED using 3 TB discs in a Fractal Design R4 case. 13,000 hours on 3 of the 5 disks. I've lost 2 drives over the years and rebuilt the raid twice. The discs never spin down! I run Ubuntu and on my HTPC run Kodi. the hardware on my server is allmost vintage. I reused a 2008 MoBo and an AMD 550 dual core CPU. i'll be upgrading soon as I'm on borrowed time with the age of my server, now.
Hello, I am having a problem with direct playing - passthrough.. Even with transcoding disabled I am not getting TrueHD on my TV which is using jellyfin app. (LG C2). HDR works and a little icon show up when I start streaming. When playing I can also see that in playback info, play method is direct playing. Audio codek is truehd. Then I am passing through that to Denon receiver. However even with the audio output to the TV speakers I am still not getting Dolby atmos icon.. Would you have any tips? many thanks

just be mindful that I have attempted to do this, but the dell desktops are not too power efficient. I was getting close to 30-50 watts at idle/max. Its probably easier and save some efficiency just to use your modern desktop as a media center, YRMV.
Thanks for watching! Yep it would be interesting to revisit this idea comparing a few different models and testing them on a Kill-a-watt. Thankfully energy is really cheap here and mostly from renewable sources but for a lot of people that could be a good thing to keep in mind.

At this point, I think anything above 12th intel (like A G7400) set a minimum and offset voltage on the board to 0.05 should produce good results and wattage: somewhere around 5-15 watts (max) if configured. Those cpus hit hard and are power efficient due to the E-cores too.
Doesn't hurt that any 12th gen intel CPU supports AV1 decoding, so I hope everything starts transitioning soon to AV1 codec!

If you are installing Ubuntu on a Mac machine, then yes it will work the same way.

Thanks for watching! Yes, if you have supported hardware, Jellyfin can do hardware transcoding without a subscription. There is no payment involved what so ever in any feature offered by Jellyfin - it is completely free software, which is why we think it's a great option over Plex. Hope this helps!
I'm doing a bit of research on this and was told that Jellyfin does not handle Dolby Atmos and you will need to do some workarounds to get that to work. Have you found this to be the case?
Thanks for watching! On the server side audio is handled as part of the MKV file and there's no difference between an ATMOS track and any other kind of audio data. Where this will matter is on the client side. In our experience, using a 2019 NVIDIA SHIELD Pro, Dolby ATMOS audio is sent to our processor exactly as it would be from a 4K Blu-ray player with no workarounds. Other playback devices may not offer the same experience however. Hope this helps!

This is why most people just stream. There really no plug and play programs . The average person is not going to spend a 1,000 bucks up front cost, plus movies and pay some one to set it up. This is why Hollywood are not cracking down on this. Every year Hollywood is makeing this kind of set up hard to do. Because companies don't want to deal with being sue for copyright law bs.
The easiest way is just download vcl player and set it up to your main TV from your pc. With hdmi cable. No streaming capability .
we had an xp computer plugged into the tv with a folder full of movies on back in 2010. My xp mini computer still runs fine today. There's no need to plug it into the internet it just runs and doesnt need updates. On my older laptops and computers we forced windows 11 education onto them.
im very new at this stuff..
so i just made my own jellyfin server with my main PC right now. it got r5 57500f and an rx 6600.. its been running for like 3 days. and before it uses the CPU . Theres no issue as far as I can remember and itr works fine. there's only 2 client in my house. living room tv and my parents tv. I'm saving the movie files on an external SSD. (this is why it trying to use my old dell optiplex as an server so that I can use an internal storage too) but. today while I was watching the movie from living room tv it got sick sick sick lots of buffer. the first 8-10 minutes it works fine. smooth
but after that it buffers a lot and stuttering. i haven't tried hardware acceleration since I know my CPU is capable doing this. 2 tv, only mkv 1080p format with x264 sdr (most of it) I got some HEVC/ x265 file. and I'm only downloading the file in 1080p.
my upload speed is about 15 Mbps average.
my question is
How can I fix this?
should I use the hardware accell?
should I change my server from this PC to the dell optiplex 3020 which has an older CPU and GPU?
Should I change to my i7 3370 and rx 570 (old pc)?

I just realised my CPU in task manger didn't put his effort into it. last night I updated my windows 11... does that could be the problem?
On his example PC and with the HDDs he used, there are a few things to note
You actually don't need UEFI support in the Bios, as long as the Host operating system supports GPT you can use the 4 TB HDD or larger, you just have to setup the Boot Disk as MBR, and then any additional drives can be GPT
And the Only reason his example computer don't support Windows 11 is because of no TPM support
Which you can still run a custom install command to ignore that requirement
That PC will Run 10 or 11 no problem, and not slow either for the intended purpose of serving up network shares
I would go even one further and use a separate PC to do your Transcoding and Rips
Not good advice to have MBR drives nowadays, so yes, you will need a UEFI system. Unless a PC is really ancient, that's a non issue. And Windows 10 will be just fine, rather than 11.
Anyway to add Dolby Vision without Plex + nVidia Shield?
Thanks for watching! Jellyfin should directly play back Dolby Vision content, so the rest comes down to your player. If you have an Android TV you might able to join the Jellyfin Android TV app public beta play.google.com/apps/testing/org.jellyfin.androidtv to get Dolby Vision working perfectly. Otherwise the process just depends on the device and software you are using. Hope this helps!

Does the media server being too old hamper its ability to do so?
Not as long as the server doesn't need to transcode to a lower resolution. It will be acting like a file server and sending everything at your TV or Roku ECT. If say your asking it to go from 4k atmos to 1080p Atmos it would have issues. I tested my NAS the other day with it and it said nope, but I was able to stream 4k with Atmos to 2 different devices with no issues. I pretty sure I could have done one or two more with no problems because it wasn't having to transcode the video.

Thanks for watching! Yes, so long as you don't do any post processing to the file, such as compression, it will retain all the exact same data that was originally on the disc and the quality will be identical. Hope this helps.

I’ve found that my Core 2 Quad Q6600 works fine for anything under 4K streaming, which I don’t need because I have literally nothing that I can watch 4K on anyway. Where it has problems is when there’s three or more streams going at 1080p with transcoding.

@prateeksaxena6161 me? I have no idea, but I'm thinking it'll do okay, if it's only one stream at once. If you have the space though, make sure you optimize your videos to make them easier to stream on both ends. It doesn't cost anything to try it if you already have all the hardware, so give it a shot.

@prateeksaxena6161 depending on the format and encoding, it becomes easier or harder for the device serving the video and the device receiving the video to process. The transcoding process happens on the server side, but if it's in a format which the client can't properly handle, you'll have problems. That server is a bit on the low end, but I THINK it should be able to handle it well enough. Don't quote me on it though. My quad core is the slowest thing I've tried to use as a server, and it has 8 gigs of ram.

Nice video, sir! I have been hearing good things about Jellyfin for the video side of things. I just finished setting up another Roon server for my music use. I used Mint 21.1 instead of Ubuntu, but I did think about using Ubuntu server. I used an older Dell laptop, that is not getting used anymore and an extra 2TB HDD with a external case from a recent NAS upgrade, all set. As far as video, I do have a NAS setup and currently use VLC or DS Video for playback. My rips are mainly DVDs with a few downloads and TV recordings. I don't do 4K BD at this time, but I have ripped a few BDs with MKV. My biggest BD rip is "Ice Station Zebra" which is a CinemaScope release so it looks awesome and that file is huuuge, lol. I have thought about Plex but like you said, they keep changing stuff and blocking features, so I'll stick to Roon for audio and maybe look at Jellyfin for video, thanks to you. Have a great day.

The AMD Radeon RX6400 GPU uses just 7 watts to 13 watts of power and can output HDMI 2.1 4K 120hx 4:4:4 RGB. It is dirt cheap and runs purely from the PCIE power. No extra power required. One caveat... No AVC1 audio.
Why not just use kodi and connect to a pc on the same network with your media? It's ALOT cheaper and an easy setup.
If it's a really old pc, i'd recommend Lubuntu rather than vanilla ubuntu just for that extra memory and CPU overhead. The older the PC the more likely you need it.
How about VLC media player ?
Have been using that for years and it works great. Put your files on a shared drive and all your devices stream well. I just put on a usb/sata 3.0 drive. Not actually certain how well it works using a lot of 4k streams. Enjoy.😁
It's garbage and only survives because it plays so many different file formats natively. It's not actually good as a media player.
This video went from talking about being too dumb to know what's im your pc and dinosaur pc ownership to installing Ubuntu and typing in command lines in a finger snap. I'm confused as to who this is aimed at. Lol.
WHAT I don't like with Plex on a recent install is that it "showed my movie and music list ON the internet", and my feelings and logic is, MY FILES should remain private to my own usage ONLY!!!!

Looking forward for a new generation intel based hometheature pc build along with GPU which have 4K HDMI out if this can be done then it will be a great utility stuff for each hometheature passion guys because we can have alot of flexibility like calibration/dedicated media server/........etc but the thing is common people not well aware about build a pc for dedicated Media purpose like what type of electronics to be selected cpu/gpu/psu/ram/motherboard and dedicated software for media for example if blu-ray disc reader added on this pc then we can avoid each different components in Hometheature like media players/blueray players.....etc if professional people like you have more knowledge about electronics as well as software for hometheature
A skin for movies would be great, like emulators have

@@jessechristman1471 true, but i only do direct play in plex since i only have two clients playing stuff ATM. as for storage, bought a 14tb two months ago, then 10tb a month ago and im left now with 1.5tb of free space. another 14tb goes in next month, god willing lol. then finally, replacing one 4tb with another 14tb and then… either buying expensive red pros 20tb and replacing 10 and 14tb plus’ drives… or maybe start watching and stop hoarding. im down to imdb 4 ratings now out of sheer desperation, lol, for movies. tv series are killing me though. 200gb for desperate housewives which ive never watched and i probably never will, haha. smallville? never watched, and thres like 15 seasons of that crap. 300gb in 1080p, easily. anyway, buy my mixtape. and thanks for hanging around my blog. cheers.
@@jessechristman1471 I know some people use transcoding to watch their movies,especially through plex. but thats the Last thing I would ever want when watching and wanting the cleanest,most pristine,untouched audio....if your computer can decode all the formats, dtshdma, true hd, DD+ , 8 channel pcm ect, then go that route ...always try and use a passthrough, bitstream option before resorting to transcoding...
UEFI isn't what makes a PC talk to large drives. The controller and drivers are.
I dont ever want to use unbuntu or linux because I can't just download and install, I have to type terminal codes. Is there an easier linux OS?
Linux mint is super easy.
Rufus is still good but I now call it Dufus since it's Windows only.

Windows 10 is pertty fast even on my old AMD Phenom 2 x6 2,8GHz Hexa core🤷♂️ Even tested it on an shitty 7" Linx tablet with 1GHZ and 1Gb RAM with surpricing good results👀 Not great but considering what it is it's usable for basic things
The only reason I could see running my own media server is if the internet went down or you had your own survival bunker because civil war broke out. Otherwise, Netflix and UA-cam is enough, I had a web server running once in my house and it was a chore to let it run all the time.
Ubuntu.. leaves you with a generic install that might get you tearing and micro stutters sending you spending hours or days of your life hacking Modelines into Xorg and chasing device options. Use OpenELEC, and forget "old PC" munching down 70W idle and go for some ARM based 5W device the size of a cig pack that supports 4K@60fps and is officially supported by OpenELEC. 30-40 bucks. If you run with 1 HDD put on a powered USB3 adapter. Done. By the way, old PCs like that won't have enough punch to decode x265 4K if you're out of luck.
Win 98, XP, etc were so much user friendly than the newer versions, 8, 10 or 11.

I am perplexed by videos like this one Why would you waste even a dollar on this type of setup. I had a dedicated HTPC (actually multiple HTPCs) for at least 15 years. I pulled the plug on my HTPC 4 years ago, All my media is stored on NAS and I access all of the video on my Sony TVs using VLC. As for my large audio collection I use different music players depending which audio system to which I am outputting. With today's normal smart tv technology why bother with this extra piece of hardware?

Idk.why theres vidoes.on blue rat and dvd drives..microsoft is phasing them out with softwsre..so ya stay on windows 7 with no updates and play n burn blue rays..if ur lucky
It doesn't matter what Microsoft does. They don't dictate Blu Ray or DVD standards and don't make the drives. Most dedicated drives are pretty much plug and play, or would have their own drivers, so the OS isn't really a factor anyway.

This guy never heard of Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 which supports updates for standalone or headless pcs until 2032.
I guess there goes the "tech" credibility of this chanel.
He also didn't mention that since the PC came with windows 7 you can use its licence key to upgrade to the equivalent windows 10 for free.

I run LTSC 2021 Enterprise on my PC personally - though as a creator I am not going to tell anyone watching this video to go through the convoluted activation process required for a volume licensed version.
If you actually watch the video closely, in the footage around 1:40 you can also see that the product key, which would have been on the top of this machine, was removed by the organization we purchased it from - and for anyone else without a product key, telling them to use an old Windows 7 key to get Windows 10/11 would be useless.
Ubuntu is powerful and very easy to use for this purpose, and it's a better fit than Windows for older hardware.

To sum up the response, you don't need Linux if you're doing a headless streaming unit and you definitely don't need one connected to the internet (no need to update it).
Just set your headless pc network as a local subnet and don't add a default gateway through windows 10: it doesn't matter whether windows expires or not as long as it's not being used as a main. You don't need an activation key either. If you need to update the app or program, just download it and transfer it via USB from your main to headless. That's it! This video shouldn't be as complicated.

Have you completely missed the point of streaming services like Netflix? I think so. Netflix doesn't stream your school sports day or those videos you collected when you were a teenager, it's for stuff you don't already own!
Which you didn't buy because it was supposed to be so much cheaper , as well as completely ad free streaming them. This is no longer the case. You are now being bombarded with ads, have lesser quality content in terms of sound and video quality and pay more, while owning nothing. Of course, if you want to keep paying more and more and not owning anything, just literally having nothing to show for the money ultimately, that's entirely your choice.
@ObakuZenCenter How many hard copies do you think you can buy for a tenner a month? Of course having a personal streamer is a good thing, it doesn't mean that it can replace the likes of Netflix in physical form without a massive initial outlay which makes the comparison invalid. It's like comparing your apple tree to a supermarket. You'll get there one day but you'll be eating a lot of apples till you've built the whole farm!
