Running both in parallel is the best. For example, Jellyfin can't get playstation support due to sony nonsense, so if you use a ps5 then plex is required. But Jellyfin is definitely the future overall, since it's FOSS and doesn't depend on any specific corp to work
My smart TV doesn't have a jellyfin app, and I'm not a fan of casting. Also jellyfin doesn't play nice with my current setup as hardware acceleration will crash even on bare metal. I think it's an Intel GPU issue, but it's strange because everything else that uses ffmpeg works fine

@@jsbadgerI just run jellyfin on my computer (I have either Mac or Linux), no docker needed, my media is either (or both) on the computer or NAS, and use Chromecast (which I already have from decades ago) to play on my TV, using the app for playing media on (in my case, Android) tablet & phone. No real problems other than sometimes Chromecast has bugs (gets stuck or has problems resuming media with subtitles, not too common though, and probably not related to jellyfin per se)
My issue with Plex, I lost my internet for a few hours while the ISP did some maintenance. I couldn't access any of my servers. Nada, zip, nothing, and I was at home. The plex servers were upstairs. Even local access was denied. Try it. Turn of your router and try to access plex.
@MonkWithoutACauseWireguard is the way. Or some wg based solution like Netbird or Tailscale/Headscale to let people in securely. Could also use a solution like Cloudflare (Argo) tunnels but I'm not a fan of that method
About the only thing Plex does well is live TV. The auto commercial skip and closed captions that work out of the box are very helpful for me in my case. I got ccextractor to work on my Linux PC, but I could never get any kind of commercial skipping software working.
All in for Jelllyfin. Kicks ass and pairs well with the Steam Deck running Linux jellyfin app. This also means it has community controller profile support too
I actually love the "Live TV" feature of Plex. It turns my TV (without cable) into a full media experience. I can get a movie or a tv show, or I can have ad-supported shows (like This Old House) right in the same app
Love the Live TV streamer with Jellyfin. It’s easy enough to find m3u streamers across the world. Problem is parsing the 11000 channels world wide. It can be overwhelming.
Been using Plex free version for about 3 years and currently in the process of switching to Jellyfin. I understand they need to make a profit but I can't vibe with paying to use hardware that I've already bought and own. I tried Jellyfin years ago and it seemed super barebones which is why I chose Plex, but it looks to have come a long way since then. Took a bit to get set up (so did Plex) but I like the metadata scraping functionality much more in Jellyfin. Haven't tried music yet and might continue to use Plex exclusively for that in conjunction with Plexamp. There are lots of things that Jellyfin does better and some that Plex does better, but I think with a couple more years in the oven Jellyfin could potentially be near-perfect. Plex on the other hand only seems to be stagnating, if not going backwards.
I run both with jellyfin being my in home preferred service and Plex being my out of home/shared with family software. Can I get jellyfin to be accessible outside my network? Yes and I’ve done it before, but plex just makes it so quick and easy to share with family.
I went from Plex to Emby when Plex started branching out and charging for features. Emby was the better option compared to Jellyfin at the time. I run in on a Windows PC server.
I'm on Emby too.. it has better explorer for personal media which are not movies or series.. like i have tons of studying material and the way you can configure each library to be browsed is amazing
My main problem with Jellyfin is that it needs to be directly connected to to access it from outside the internal network. Since I use Plex to watch movies with my friends who are scattered around the world, this makes it a no go. Yeah, there are ways to do it securely, but I have neither the time nor knowledge of how to do this cheaply/freely
It's trivially easy to set this up. I had no idea how to do it either and did it in a couple hours. The LSIO swag container comes with a sample proxy conf for all kinds of things (Jellyfin among them), so you basically just have to copy a filename and remove .sample from it, then restart swag, and as long as port 443 is forwarded to the box running swag, you're good to go.). Granted this requires purchasing a domain and setting up a DNS record, but this is all easy stuff. Traefik is arguably easier to setup, and I'm about to try switching to that, so we'll see how it goes. But you can run both side by side and use Jellyfin internally and Plex externally if you find the setup too difficult. It won't cause any harm. I run Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin pointed at the same media library. Plex is just the only one I never use.

@wojtek-33 The only port that's open goes to the reverse proxy (except for PLex and its special snowflake 31400 port or whatever it is, I'd have to check). Everything goes through there. At the moment I use swag, which is built around nginx, which is pretty secure. When I stop being lazy I mean to switch to traefik, and I will look into Tailscale etc. then and see how painless it would be to connect my phone to my stuff when I'm out of the house. Mainly I'm too lazy to turn a VPN on and off on my phone every time i want to upload a picture or something.
For me it’s the ability to setup an external connection easy that keeps me on Plex. If I wanted something similar it would take setup of a VPN or similar to get external access. Plex is also a lot easier to work with compared to Jellyfin for those not technologically inclined.
actually Jellyfin have external access. there are setting to allow external access which you set ports etc and I tried it only once. it was working with my mobile phone.
@@home-uf3tg I know that you technically can log in offsite but security is something you have to setup yourself. This is both a good and bad thing. Jellyfin interface also isn’t as intuitive compared to plex.

Jellyfin is much better option for me. Hardware acceleration works great, it has all essential features to stream movies and series, no need internet to use it, no additional payment for mobile app or subscription subscription.
A little more clarity would have been nice. Plex does not require any payments/subscriptions, nor putting up with the added content if you just want to organize and view your personal media. I run Plex Media Server and store all of my movies, TV shows, music, How-to videos, and fitness videos on an old dual core eMachines PC running Windows 7. The only time I've had buffering was the occasional wonky audio track and with the Roku in the master bedroom that didn't have a strong enough wifi signal, which was easily solved with a Netgear Wifi extender (and later a router upgrade from our ISP). I only pin the local media and ignore everything else for a slick and seamless interface. It's easy to organize the media and have it automatically populate, including graphics and subtitles and commentary tracks. The best analogy I can make is that Plex is Windows and Jellyfin is Linux. If you don't need the bloat, Plex works fine. If you don't mind having to get under the hood, try Jellyfin. Personally I don't think the latter is ready, making Plex the better choice in spite of some idiosyncrasies. Even so, I suggest people new to home media servers set up a set of test folders with mixed media and install Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin and point them all to those folders to see how they handle the same content. It's also a good way to learn the basics of adding content, including proper folder and file name structure.
I personally use Jellyfin. I’ve tried Plex, but seeing the free streaming options and the fact that you need to pay to use the mobile apps instantly put me off. Jellyfin is alright. It works well enough for my family. The only issues I’ve encountered so far are that for some movies and shows, it gets the metadata completely wrong so I have to manually fix it when it does happen, and that the Swiftfin app refuses to recognize my server. Other than that, it works rather well. I’m hoping in the future things become more polished, but for now it works for me.
I have a Plex Lifetime PlexPass and I made the move to Emby about 2 years ago and like it so much better now. Plex started pushing all this Live TV and making just seeing your personal content a pain. Emby, well, it just works and does what I wish Plex still did when I started using it. Plus I think Emby looks so much better and has a better UI now.
I find it odd that you wouldn't bat an eyelash when buying that huge NAS and all your blurays and 4ks, but balk at getting a lifetime pass on Plex... I got it on sale for $79. Also...serious Moss vibes 😉 Keep up the good work!
A lot of people who self host pirate content. Plex is a company, and while they have a very good track record, they could theoretically enforce a sudden eula which allows them to snoop on their users and snitch to copyright holders. No matter how unlikely it is, when it comes to home labbing, free and open source projects are always going to draw in people due to the perceived security.

Although I avoid transcoding like the plague and direct play whatever I can, and using SSDs to handle the container and metadata it always runs snappy even on an old Intel G3258 - Plex dogs any hardware down I've tried to run it on with its excessive bloat

The default settings aggressively scan last I checked - I'd try dialing down the metadata scanning and seeing if that helps. Disk I/o is your likely bottleneck and if it's not that then their db just can't handle it and needs to be refined
I have a lifetime plex pass but I stopped using it because when I loose internet I can't use my plex. So I went to emby and it still works even without internet.
@@attackhelicopter-up3dh Not any good ones. The only workaround is basically telling it to not authenticate any client on your LAN, which basically means anyone who comes to your house has admin access to your Plex server. It's laughably bad.
I would love to dump plex becasue its only a matter of time before the intrude into our collections. Jellyfin is just not there yet if I want to share it with my family. Swiftfin id buggy as hell, and remote shareing is tricky. Give it time though.
So what's the way to share content? I run a Nextcloud server, which allows me to share content via the NC web player, but I want a better interface. Jellyfin isn't the way to go then?
I tried both of them and emby, plex is good in matching my language movies. Yellyfin is bad in matching a lot of things, plus in docker its taking tonnes of ram, my instance used 6gb of ram. For me Emby has a good balance, but I am still with plex due to simple remote playback
After using Plex for years I tried Jellyfin, and sorry but it still needs A TON of work. The app support is just not there, even swiftin will bug when changing languages, enabling subs etc when not at home. Playing content from a webpage? Just no. In short, Jellyfin server is really, REALLY good, but the apps are some of the worst I’ve ever used, and without apps the server part is useless. More so, sharing with Jellyfin is hell for not computer savvy family members, having a centralized account system as Plex does makes it much much easier to share content with family/friends.

Jellyfin is too convoluted. Plex just works and is easier to use. I use Plex, but keep my library updated on Jellyfin because it is open-source and has an active community.
When did you try Jellyfin last time? I am new user and it was extremely easy for me. I just downloaded a dmg file, click it to install, that's it. also installation wizard help me to show the PATH where my movies stored, and that's it.
If you get the community store add-on, theres a Jellyfin app through that (for folks that don't wanna mess with docker). I switched from Plex to Jellyfin when I couldn't use IPTV. Now? I don't have to pay, I get IPTV, and about the only thing I miss from Plex is intro and credits skipping (maybe theres an add-on for that on Jellyfin, I dunno)
There is indeed an add-on for intro/credit skip (ConfusedPolarBear/intro-skipper on GitHub), out the gate it's a lot less consistent than Plex, however with fine tuning I prefer the add-on(Though 1 thing that I've never had working, is the credit skip part. Only intro works right, so that's a small L imo, but that 100% could be PEBKAC)
Honestly, I'm using Launchbox and manually doing it all. Both Jellyfin and Plex suck in my opinion. They both are great for a specific type of media server, but fail in other areas. For example. I have Movies, TV Shows, Anime and Cartoons and both Jellyfin and Plesk fail tremendously in the Anime and Cartoon genres for syncing at all or correctly with mods since the base doesn't do at all. With Launchbox, I can have all my video games, all my movies, shows, anime, cartoons etc in one place. Sure, it takes more time to set each piece of content however, it's so satisfying when it's all in one place and works.
@RAM_845Hehe, theoretically, yes. Practically, no. You can set launchbox to launch anything you want, hence the name. It is advertised for games and also is connected to more gaming related syncing databases than anything else but you can do other stuff. I do movies, TV Shows, Anime. Yes there is a lot of manual editing but on the flip side, I can make it look how I want, have all my libraries in one place and it's amazing!
@RAM_845I don't know if Launchbox works on the nVidia Shield as I don't own one but I don't see why it shouldn't. If it does however, the same setting up will work within launchbox to make it work with movies and TV Shows and anime. I'll have to make a video of how I do it after Easter so keep an eye out. :)
@RAM_845 That's what I meant when I said that it takes a lot of manual setup for each one, but when done, it looks amazing. There are ways to build plugins for it to make it happen automatically and maybe one day when I have time I'll do that, but right now, this is better than nothing! :)
Doesn't require connection to plex's servers, doesnt give Plex any data related to you they can use for marketing, don't have to worry about decisions a corporate entity is making impacting your streaming setup (eg Plex banning hosting on certain VPS services), don't have Plex pushing their streaming on you, it's free, etc etc

Not for me while jellyfin is good plex app is more polished for me anyways and hardware transcoding isnt even needed for most people and most devices cant support it anyways. That said Jellyfin is good and a great backup. Also plex is easier to add friends and family to it.
jellyfin looks like a high school programming class project and i understand it is an open source project from hobbyists, it is great considering that fact. But plex is just so much more polished. i Bought the lifetime plex pass a few years ago and haven’t looked back. People are always complaining that plex charges for features but they are a company and need to make money for development.

Plex had promised to respect privacy. But Plex now shows other users what you have been watching. There is a way to turn it off but its default. Plex is easier for HDhomerun channels and included but Jellyfin you have to pay extra and takes more work to setup for DVR function compared to Plex

The benefit is if you have a large media library compiled over many years it will organize and and add metadata to it so it looks like a streaming service ane much easier to find and filter media compared to searching through windows explorer. Also you can easily pull up your media from any device in your lan or even outside your network if you have the paid plex pass.
I know Plex have problem seeing some anime I did payed for, I change it's name change the file format did all I can do, Jellyfin up rights reads it no problem. Not saying Plex is bad it's have it's pro and cons like Jellyfin.

I tried Plex and hated it both for it's subscription rip off and it's lack of customisation and to be honest Jellyfin just works better it's not really that difficult to setup and because it's webpage based will work on just about anything also Jellyfin doesn't call home or require internet access for it to work.
plex is better by quite a bit jellyfin cant even be installed on most devices and tvs while plex can so jellyfin isnt worth the time in my opinion right now ill give it about 5 years before i might try it again
With streaming services, all of this just seems unnecessary and crazy expensive unless you are taking the time to rip every disc that’s available from your local library.
Plex not allowing "free" transcoding on your own hardware (essentially wearing out your computer & making the user experience definitively worse) falls under the category of shitification, and this is something everyone should take a strict NO stance against and boycott until they accept a less "shitty" business model.
Personally DON'T run Plex on a out of the box NAS, these devices tend to be low on compute to be able to efficiently run something like Plex, especially if you are hosting content for remote users that will probably require transcoding.
They should work fine if they have an Intel CPU with integrated graphics. But yeah. An Intel mini PC like the Minisforum MS-01 will be MUCH better for hosting applications than any NAS.
I would love to use Jellyfin, so I downloaded the Jellyfin server software and installed the 64bit version on my Windows 11 laptop. Setup was a breeze. Then I installed the Swiftfin app on my AppleTV and I can't get it to find the Jellyfin server to save my life. Both are on the same network (laptop is WiFi and AppleTV is on the same WiFi network). I tried installing the Jellyfin client on my Galaxy S23 Ultra Android phone and I can't get it to connect to the Jellyfin server either. I'm using my laptop's IPv4 address with a colon and 8096, but it still won't find the server. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and really need help. Otherwise, I'm dead in the water and don't even want to try Plex.
I would recommend you use Ethernet port if you use laptop as server, if you are using wifi to connect with router from your laptop, your laptop IP address will change your laptop disconnect and reconnect again. Which mean your Jellyfin server x.x.x.x:8096 will not be same IP everytime.
If Plex didn’t make you pay for hardware transcoding I’d probably use it I can’t use mkv’s on Plex without it being like 480p, but jellyfin does it just fine
You need to build the right server if you are having those issues with plex. the files plex has the biggest issues with is not mkvs but avis. Also just follow what plex recomends on their web site I run a nice 8th gen I7 no hardware transcoding at all with the free plex and it could handle any friends remotly watching HD 1080p content without any problem. Also make sure your endcoded videos are x264 or 265 even for better streaming. As a professional IF networking tech for 30 years theres a lot to consider when designing your setup if its a local one in your house you dont need much.
@@richperez2168LOL! It literally does make you pay for hardware transcoding. It is clearly stated in the video!! Plex will only do software transcoding without a subscription or a lifetime Plex Pass. And using the CPU can be brutal on your hardware when handling anything above 1080p no matter which codec you use.
@@ComputerWorksOnDemandMost consumer grade NAS have ARM CPUs or Intel N95 or N100 CPUs at best with a fraction of the power and they still manage to run Plex perfectly fine. It is not that demanding on the hardware. The problem is transcoding that requires a decent GPU in order to not put too much stress on the CPU.

Plex charging for features that are broken anyway, coupled with the fact that you can't contact support even if you are a paid use, is complete BS. Their live TV dvr function has been broken for at least 7 months, but possibly up to 2 years, and they wont fix it despite numerous complaints from people that paid for the feature
I see that people use jellyfin to create personal streaming libraries. Wondering if anyone knows if its possible to use this to create my own branded, paid subscription, local music streaming network?
I'm assuming you have all the hardware you need to run this, including the horsepower to transcode multiple streams. And a very good internet connection... you will need to setup multiple accounts for users. This is done easier with plex, and you ca monitor and gather statistics on what's being played more etc... on plex.
I name my files "TVshowblabla S01E01.MP4" and it works, movies just need the title only.mp4 and they work. Plex and I am sure this program will work with almost any file format you have.
Yeah man, probably an issue with your file naming and folder structure. There is official documentation on this for Plex and Jellyfin but basically your folders should be named something like "Show Name (Year)" without quotations. Then within that you have subfolders for each season named "Season 01" and so on. Then the individual episodes should be named like "S01E01 - Episode Title" etc etc. Hope this helps.
Can someone explain to me the benefit of Plex/Jellyfin over Kodi and an SMB share? Other than transcoding and streaming over the internet, both features I don't need, how do they differ?
4k HDR movies on Jellyfin looked washed out, both on the TV app and PC. Very desaturated, does anyone have a fix for this? When I play them directly on VLC media player they look just fine?!?!
VLC can do some form of tonemapping of HDR content to SDR for SDR displays. Jellyfin can do this, but it requires enabling hardware transcoding. Without transcoding, the video will play as HDR on an SDR display and look washed out
maybe you have 4K Dolby Vision, most PC monitor and TVs doesn't support Dolby Vision yet. Try 4K HDR10 to see if it fix. I have same issue and later found down that my 75" Sony 4K and iMac doesn't support it, I convert it to 4K HDR10, the color come out brilliant.

@@playera1507maybe because Kodi is not an media server but an media player with an library. Kodi is king for local devices, but if you need encoding for remote devices you need an media server to handle the encoding. You can use plex or jellyfin as backend and kodi as frontend too
Bc its much more primitive and doesnt have the user friendlyness or extra features as plex and jellyfin. Kodi is good for pulling streams from the internet. Plex and Jellyfin are better at cataloguing and processing local data
Unlike Plex, Jellyfin can see the iso and adds it to the library. However I haven't been able to get Jellyfin to play my makemkv ripped iso files. Kodi can play iso files, so I'm going to attempt playback in Kodi synced with my Jellyfin server. Fingers crossed it works.

Yeah jellyfin definitely has a lot of issues. Getting some of the movie art covers wrong, never had that issue with plex. Always log me out of my account which can be a pain in the arse because I have to constantly re enter my user name and password. Even when I'm in the middle of a movie... It doesn't have lots of filters, I like to view the bitrates and info of my movies. Guess what, jellyfin doesn't have that but plex does have such filters and I just like the look of plex i general, it's just well polished. Only thing I hate about plex is that they try to make you pay for everything and it seems more resource heavy then jellyfin.
Agreed. And with the onetime lifetime Plex pass you get all the features. The video made it sound like separate fees for transcoding and getting mobile playback, etc.

I am totally lost. Why not use a Windows Server 2022 R2 machine which will manage all your disks and Visual Machines guest os for sandboxed torrent activity? Why would I ever transcode my pristine 2160p 90 GB Oppenheimer for example? I can stream it on my dedicated network to an Apple 4K TV infuse or my iPad Pro M1 infuse player via SMB shares?
Beacuse Server licenses are expensive and unnecessary at home when Linux etc is free? Oh, it can also run VM's... Who says you have to transcode 4k? if your player does it just fine, why are you here🙄
@tcntad87 that's what I am saying storage prices from 2010 have dramatically dropped. 48TB is $550 aggregate. Plex was meant for the old era of storage.

@@tcntad87 I don't doubt you want to store media offline. But you need 60 - 85 TB on average with just SMB. Plex streaming mobile is just silly. Take a 4 TB external Sandisk with all the movies you are going to watch while traveling.

Yes, but you have to know (or learn) how to set that up. If you purchase a domain, setup a DNS record pointing a wildcard subdomain at your WAN IP, forward port 443 to a reverse proxy like traefik or swag, and setup the reverse proxy to proxy a jellyfin subdomain to the port jellyfin runs on, it works perfectly. It took me a few hours to learn how to do this and set this up, though I didn't do it for Jellyfin, but just in general.
so it seems like people left plex because they didnt have a lifetime pass and didnt want to pay for normal stuff vs a free software than not everyone has heard of and something that cant be used on every platform? I think ill stick with Plex. Looking at both of them, I know half of my family would be like "the fuck is this?" when looking at Jellyfin. Jellyfins Roku app is also complete ass.
Hardware transcoding isnt needed for most people and isnt even capable on most devices like a PI most synology nas units and things like the shield for a server dont support hardware transcoding. Any arm device dosnt support it, even running the intel that is supported isnt that great. I run a I7 and have many friends and family on my plex at the same time over long distances without hardware transcoding turned on. A dell optiplex sff I7 8th gen or higher will do a great job even running free plex without the plex pass. 200TB and counting on my plex server. While I like jellyfin the apps are not as polished because of it being free and open source. Great video and good job explaining things love the content and keep it up. You really need a nice nvidia graphics card for harware transcoding to work well.

I've tested it with both AMD and intel IGPU's and DGPU's and both work fine. How many streams will depend on the hardware of course but an arc 380 can handle 6-7 streams no problem for example.
Where do we start...QSV is just as effective at transcoding as an Nvidia graphics card and it's definitely more efficient. Turning on transcoding doesn't mean every stream will use it. An educated user is the best kind of user. Sometimes transcoding is unavoidable, whether audio or the occasional subtitles. Yes CPU transcoding works just fine and if that's all your server does... Great. But if you use QSV. It frees up those CPU cycles to do other things like unpack .rar's lol
I personally don't find the appeal of Plex or Jellyfinn. Do people really want to watch old movies streamed to their HDTVs, tablets or smartphones stored on some home server running 24/7 ? I mean once you watched the movie it's done ! Kodi or apps like CinemaHD and Tubi installed on the device is actually a more robust method since it doesn't rely on one central server.
You kinda answered your own question. Streaming services are of course easier, otherwise they wouldn't have such a mass appeal. But they won't be around forever, nor will they have the same shows/movies available to watch forever. That's just the tip of the iceberg of reasons. Plenty of people watching new stuff on their home servers, not sure what gives you the idea that it's only for old content.

Running both in parallel is the best. For example, Jellyfin can't get playstation support due to sony nonsense, so if you use a ps5 then plex is required. But Jellyfin is definitely the future overall, since it's FOSS and doesn't depend on any specific corp to work
You can always use Jellyfin via the web browser. Of course getting to the browser is a pain, but it can be done.

My smart TV doesn't have a jellyfin app, and I'm not a fan of casting. Also jellyfin doesn't play nice with my current setup as hardware acceleration will crash even on bare metal. I think it's an Intel GPU issue, but it's strange because everything else that uses ffmpeg works fine

@@jsbadgerI just run jellyfin on my computer (I have either Mac or Linux), no docker needed, my media is either (or both) on the computer or NAS, and use Chromecast (which I already have from decades ago) to play on my TV, using the app for playing media on (in my case, Android) tablet & phone. No real problems other than sometimes Chromecast has bugs (gets stuck or has problems resuming media with subtitles, not too common though, and probably not related to jellyfin per se)
Personally I ditched Plex (pass user for years) and I will never go back. JellyFin takes a little more work, but it's worth it.

My issue with Plex, I lost my internet for a few hours while the ISP did some maintenance.
I couldn't access any of my servers. Nada, zip, nothing, and I was at home. The plex servers were upstairs. Even local access was denied.
Try it. Turn of your router and try to access plex.

About the only thing Plex does well is live TV. The auto commercial skip and closed captions that work out of the box are very helpful for me in my case. I got ccextractor to work on my Linux PC, but I could never get any kind of commercial skipping software working.

I decided to go with Jellyfin. Client on my Roku, host on my main PC. I don't think the UI is clunky. I like it. Plex on Roku is a bit laggy.
All in for Jelllyfin. Kicks ass and pairs well with the Steam Deck running Linux jellyfin app. This also means it has community controller profile support too

I actually love the "Live TV" feature of Plex. It turns my TV (without cable) into a full media experience. I can get a movie or a tv show, or I can have ad-supported shows (like This Old House) right in the same app
Love the Live TV streamer with Jellyfin. It’s easy enough to find m3u streamers across the world. Problem is parsing the 11000 channels world wide. It can be overwhelming.
Been using Plex free version for about 3 years and currently in the process of switching to Jellyfin. I understand they need to make a profit but I can't vibe with paying to use hardware that I've already bought and own.
I tried Jellyfin years ago and it seemed super barebones which is why I chose Plex, but it looks to have come a long way since then. Took a bit to get set up (so did Plex) but I like the metadata scraping functionality much more in Jellyfin. Haven't tried music yet and might continue to use Plex exclusively for that in conjunction with Plexamp.
There are lots of things that Jellyfin does better and some that Plex does better, but I think with a couple more years in the oven Jellyfin could potentially be near-perfect. Plex on the other hand only seems to be stagnating, if not going backwards.
I run both with jellyfin being my in home preferred service and Plex being my out of home/shared with family software. Can I get jellyfin to be accessible outside my network? Yes and I’ve done it before, but plex just makes it so quick and easy to share with family.
Port forwarding with Jellyfin can get scary. But most routers are easy enough to configure and signing SSL with certbot gives you added security.
I went from Plex to Emby when Plex started branching out and charging for features. Emby was the better option compared to Jellyfin at the time. I run in on a Windows PC server.

I'm on Emby too.. it has better explorer for personal media which are not movies or series.. like i have tons of studying material and the way you can configure each library to be browsed is amazing

My main problem with Jellyfin is that it needs to be directly connected to to access it from outside the internal network. Since I use Plex to watch movies with my friends who are scattered around the world, this makes it a no go. Yeah, there are ways to do it securely, but I have neither the time nor knowledge of how to do this cheaply/freely
It's trivially easy to set this up. I had no idea how to do it either and did it in a couple hours. The LSIO swag container comes with a sample proxy conf for all kinds of things (Jellyfin among them), so you basically just have to copy a filename and remove .sample from it, then restart swag, and as long as port 443 is forwarded to the box running swag, you're good to go.). Granted this requires purchasing a domain and setting up a DNS record, but this is all easy stuff. Traefik is arguably easier to setup, and I'm about to try switching to that, so we'll see how it goes.
But you can run both side by side and use Jellyfin internally and Plex externally if you find the setup too difficult. It won't cause any harm. I run Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin pointed at the same media library. Plex is just the only one I never use.

@wojtek-33 The only port that's open goes to the reverse proxy (except for PLex and its special snowflake 31400 port or whatever it is, I'd have to check). Everything goes through there. At the moment I use swag, which is built around nginx, which is pretty secure. When I stop being lazy I mean to switch to traefik, and I will look into Tailscale etc. then and see how painless it would be to connect my phone to my stuff when I'm out of the house. Mainly I'm too lazy to turn a VPN on and off on my phone every time i want to upload a picture or something.

For me it’s the ability to setup an external connection easy that keeps me on Plex. If I wanted something similar it would take setup of a VPN or similar to get external access. Plex is also a lot easier to work with compared to Jellyfin for those not technologically inclined.
actually Jellyfin have external access. there are setting to allow external access which you set ports etc and I tried it only once. it was working with my mobile phone.
@@home-uf3tg I know that you technically can log in offsite but security is something you have to setup yourself. This is both a good and bad thing. Jellyfin interface also isn’t as intuitive compared to plex.

Jellyfin is much better option for me. Hardware acceleration works great, it has all essential features to stream movies and series, no need internet to use it, no additional payment for mobile app or subscription subscription.
A little more clarity would have been nice. Plex does not require any payments/subscriptions, nor putting up with the added content if you just want to organize and view your personal media.
I run Plex Media Server and store all of my movies, TV shows, music, How-to videos, and fitness videos on an old dual core eMachines PC running Windows 7. The only time I've had buffering was the occasional wonky audio track and with the Roku in the master bedroom that didn't have a strong enough wifi signal, which was easily solved with a Netgear Wifi extender (and later a router upgrade from our ISP).
I only pin the local media and ignore everything else for a slick and seamless interface. It's easy to organize the media and have it automatically populate, including graphics and subtitles and commentary tracks.
The best analogy I can make is that Plex is Windows and Jellyfin is Linux. If you don't need the bloat, Plex works fine. If you don't mind having to get under the hood, try Jellyfin. Personally I don't think the latter is ready, making Plex the better choice in spite of some idiosyncrasies.
Even so, I suggest people new to home media servers set up a set of test folders with mixed media and install Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin and point them all to those folders to see how they handle the same content. It's also a good way to learn the basics of adding content, including proper folder and file name structure.
Yeah I've used Plex, tried Jellyfin for a few days, then moved to Emby. Night and day difference, even with having to pay for Emby. It's worth it.

I personally use Jellyfin. I’ve tried Plex, but seeing the free streaming options and the fact that you need to pay to use the mobile apps instantly put me off.
Jellyfin is alright. It works well enough for my family. The only issues I’ve encountered so far are that for some movies and shows, it gets the metadata completely wrong so I have to manually fix it when it does happen, and that the Swiftfin app refuses to recognize my server.
Other than that, it works rather well. I’m hoping in the future things become more polished, but for now it works for me.
Have both Plex and Emby running because I just want it to work.
I have a Plex Lifetime PlexPass and I made the move to Emby about 2 years ago and like it so much better now. Plex started pushing all this Live TV and making just seeing your personal content a pain. Emby, well, it just works and does what I wish Plex still did when I started using it. Plus I think Emby looks so much better and has a better UI now.

A lot of people who self host pirate content. Plex is a company, and while they have a very good track record, they could theoretically enforce a sudden eula which allows them to snoop on their users and snitch to copyright holders. No matter how unlikely it is, when it comes to home labbing, free and open source projects are always going to draw in people due to the perceived security.
Jellyfin any day. So light on resources you can run it on potatoes. Runs especially well in Docker with read only disk volumes mapped
Jellyfin crumbled under any decent size library. I wish there was a little more performance tuning for JF like there is with Plex.

The default settings aggressively scan last I checked - I'd try dialing down the metadata scanning and seeing if that helps. Disk I/o is your likely bottleneck and if it's not that then their db just can't handle it and needs to be refined
Jellyfin needs to sort out (i.e throw away and start again) their client apps. Thats their biggest let down, they are just miles behind sadly.
I have a lifetime plex pass but I stopped using it because when I loose internet I can't use my plex. So I went to emby and it still works even without internet.
@@attackhelicopter-up3dh Not any good ones. The only workaround is basically telling it to not authenticate any client on your LAN, which basically means anyone who comes to your house has admin access to your Plex server. It's laughably bad.

I would love to dump plex becasue its only a matter of time before the intrude into our collections. Jellyfin is just not there yet if I want to share it with my family. Swiftfin id buggy as hell, and remote shareing is tricky. Give it time though.

I tried both of them and emby, plex is good in matching my language movies. Yellyfin is bad in matching a lot of things, plus in docker its taking tonnes of ram, my instance used 6gb of ram. For me Emby has a good balance, but I am still with plex due to simple remote playback

After using Plex for years I tried Jellyfin, and sorry but it still needs A TON of work. The app support is just not there, even swiftin will bug when changing languages, enabling subs etc when not at home. Playing content from a webpage? Just no.
In short, Jellyfin server is really, REALLY good, but the apps are some of the worst I’ve ever used, and without apps the server part is useless.
More so, sharing with Jellyfin is hell for not computer savvy family members, having a centralized account system as Plex does makes it much much easier to share content with family/friends.
You don't have to use their apps. I use Infuse for example, which has Jellyfin support. Plex is a bloated mess lately

Jellyfin is too convoluted. Plex just works and is easier to use. I use Plex, but keep my library updated on Jellyfin because it is open-source and has an active community.
When did you try Jellyfin last time? I am new user and it was extremely easy for me. I just downloaded a dmg file, click it to install, that's it. also installation wizard help me to show the PATH where my movies stored, and that's it.
If you get the community store add-on, theres a Jellyfin app through that (for folks that don't wanna mess with docker).
I switched from Plex to Jellyfin when I couldn't use IPTV. Now? I don't have to pay, I get IPTV, and about the only thing I miss from Plex is intro and credits skipping (maybe theres an add-on for that on Jellyfin, I dunno)
There is indeed an add-on for intro/credit skip (ConfusedPolarBear/intro-skipper on GitHub), out the gate it's a lot less consistent than Plex, however with fine tuning I prefer the add-on(Though 1 thing that I've never had working, is the credit skip part. Only intro works right, so that's a small L imo, but that 100% could be PEBKAC)
Intro skipping is something that will come in a future update, for what we currently know.
I don't get the intro skipping thing. With all my media, the Next Chapter button goes to after the intro, because that's always a chapter marker.

Honestly, I'm using Launchbox and manually doing it all. Both Jellyfin and Plex suck in my opinion. They both are great for a specific type of media server, but fail in other areas. For example. I have Movies, TV Shows, Anime and Cartoons and both Jellyfin and Plesk fail tremendously in the Anime and Cartoon genres for syncing at all or correctly with mods since the base doesn't do at all.
With Launchbox, I can have all my video games, all my movies, shows, anime, cartoons etc in one place. Sure, it takes more time to set each piece of content however, it's so satisfying when it's all in one place and works.
@RAM_845Hehe, theoretically, yes. Practically, no. You can set launchbox to launch anything you want, hence the name. It is advertised for games and also is connected to more gaming related syncing databases than anything else but you can do other stuff. I do movies, TV Shows, Anime. Yes there is a lot of manual editing but on the flip side, I can make it look how I want, have all my libraries in one place and it's amazing!
@RAM_845I don't know if Launchbox works on the nVidia Shield as I don't own one but I don't see why it shouldn't. If it does however, the same setting up will work within launchbox to make it work with movies and TV Shows and anime. I'll have to make a video of how I do it after Easter so keep an eye out. :)
@RAM_845 That's what I meant when I said that it takes a lot of manual setup for each one, but when done, it looks amazing. There are ways to build plugins for it to make it happen automatically and maybe one day when I have time I'll do that, but right now, this is better than nothing! :)
I bought a Plex lifetime subscription on sale years ago. I’m trying to figure out what advantages, if any, Jellyfin offers.
Doesn't require connection to plex's servers, doesnt give Plex any data related to you they can use for marketing, don't have to worry about decisions a corporate entity is making impacting your streaming setup (eg Plex banning hosting on certain VPS services), don't have Plex pushing their streaming on you, it's free, etc etc

jellyfin looks like a high school programming class project and i understand it is an open source project from hobbyists, it is great considering that fact. But plex is just so much more polished. i Bought the lifetime plex pass a few years ago and haven’t looked back. People are always complaining that plex charges for features but they are a company and need to make money for development.

Plex had promised to respect privacy. But Plex now shows other users what you have been watching. There is a way to turn it off but its default. Plex is easier for HDhomerun channels and included but Jellyfin you have to pay extra and takes more work to setup for DVR function compared to Plex

The benefit is if you have a large media library compiled over many years it will organize and and add metadata to it so it looks like a streaming service ane much easier to find and filter media compared to searching through windows explorer. Also you can easily pull up your media from any device in your lan or even outside your network if you have the paid plex pass.

I know Plex have problem seeing some anime I did payed for, I change it's name change the file format did all I can do, Jellyfin up rights reads it no problem. Not saying Plex is bad it's have it's pro and cons like Jellyfin.
Properly name your content as per the standards and Plex will pick it up.

For me, Plex orders and names some tv episodes wrong, jellyfin does not. Same files used to read into Plex correctly, so its some kind of nrw bug
I tried Plex and hated it both for it's subscription rip off and it's lack of customisation and to be honest Jellyfin just works better it's not really that difficult to setup and because it's webpage based will work on just about anything also Jellyfin doesn't call home or require internet access for it to work.
plex is better by quite a bit jellyfin cant even be installed on most devices and tvs while plex can so jellyfin isnt worth the time in my opinion right now ill give it about 5 years before i might try it again
With streaming services, all of this just seems unnecessary and crazy expensive unless you are taking the time to rip every disc that’s available from your local library.

Plex not allowing "free" transcoding on your own hardware (essentially wearing out your computer & making the user experience definitively worse) falls under the category of shitification, and this is something everyone should take a strict NO stance against and boycott until they accept a less "shitty" business model.
Personally DON'T run Plex on a out of the box NAS, these devices tend to be low on compute to be able to efficiently run something like Plex, especially if you are hosting content for remote users that will probably require transcoding.
They should work fine if they have an Intel CPU with integrated graphics. But yeah. An Intel mini PC like the Minisforum MS-01 will be MUCH better for hosting applications than any NAS.

I would love to use Jellyfin, so I downloaded the Jellyfin server software and installed the 64bit version on my Windows 11 laptop. Setup was a breeze. Then I installed the Swiftfin app on my AppleTV and I can't get it to find the Jellyfin server to save my life. Both are on the same network (laptop is WiFi and AppleTV is on the same WiFi network). I tried installing the Jellyfin client on my Galaxy S23 Ultra Android phone and I can't get it to connect to the Jellyfin server either. I'm using my laptop's IPv4 address with a colon and 8096, but it still won't find the server. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and really need help. Otherwise, I'm dead in the water and don't even want to try Plex.
I would recommend you use Ethernet port if you use laptop as server, if you are using wifi to connect with router from your laptop, your laptop IP address will change your laptop disconnect and reconnect again. Which mean your Jellyfin server x.x.x.x:8096 will not be same IP everytime.

I can’t use mkv’s on Plex without it being like 480p, but jellyfin does it just fine
You need to build the right server if you are having those issues with plex. the files plex has the biggest issues with is not mkvs but avis. Also just follow what plex recomends on their web site I run a nice 8th gen I7 no hardware transcoding at all with the free plex and it could handle any friends remotly watching HD 1080p content without any problem. Also make sure your endcoded videos are x264 or 265 even for better streaming. As a professional IF networking tech for 30 years theres a lot to consider when designing your setup if its a local one in your house you dont need much.
Plex doesn't make you pay for hardware transcoding. I've been using Plex for years.
@@richperez2168LOL! It literally does make you pay for hardware transcoding. It is clearly stated in the video!! Plex will only do software transcoding without a subscription or a lifetime Plex Pass. And using the CPU can be brutal on your hardware when handling anything above 1080p no matter which codec you use.
@@ComputerWorksOnDemandMost consumer grade NAS have ARM CPUs or Intel N95 or N100 CPUs at best with a fraction of the power and they still manage to run Plex perfectly fine. It is not that demanding on the hardware. The problem is transcoding that requires a decent GPU in order to not put too much stress on the CPU.

Plex charging for features that are broken anyway, coupled with the fact that you can't contact support even if you are a paid use, is complete BS. Their live TV dvr function has been broken for at least 7 months, but possibly up to 2 years, and they wont fix it despite numerous complaints from people that paid for the feature
I see that people use jellyfin to create personal streaming libraries. Wondering if anyone knows if its possible to use this to create my own branded, paid subscription, local music streaming network?
I'm assuming you have all the hardware you need to run this, including the horsepower to transcode multiple streams. And a very good internet connection... you will need to setup multiple accounts for users. This is done easier with plex, and you ca monitor and gather statistics on what's being played more etc... on plex.
I need help setting up my content to work with Plex. I was told your files need to be named and set up a special way.
I name my files "TVshowblabla S01E01.MP4" and it works, movies just need the title only.mp4 and they work. Plex and I am sure this program will work with almost any file format you have.

Yeah man, probably an issue with your file naming and folder structure. There is official documentation on this for Plex and Jellyfin but basically your folders should be named something like "Show Name (Year)" without quotations. Then within that you have subfolders for each season named "Season 01" and so on. Then the individual episodes should be named like "S01E01 - Episode Title" etc etc. Hope this helps.

Sounds like plex is the superior choice. Just have to paid them the $100 for the lifetime subscription and you bypass all the nonsense. Excellent.
4k HDR movies on Jellyfin looked washed out, both on the TV app and PC. Very desaturated, does anyone have a fix for this? When I play them directly on VLC media player they look just fine?!?!
VLC can do some form of tonemapping of HDR content to SDR for SDR displays. Jellyfin can do this, but it requires enabling hardware transcoding. Without transcoding, the video will play as HDR on an SDR display and look washed out
maybe you have 4K Dolby Vision, most PC monitor and TVs doesn't support Dolby Vision yet. Try 4K HDR10 to see if it fix. I have same issue and later found down that my 75" Sony 4K and iMac doesn't support it, I convert it to 4K HDR10, the color come out brilliant.

Why not Kodi as an option? Plex was built off of Kodi which is 100% free and far superior.

@@playera1507maybe because Kodi is not an media server but an media player with an library. Kodi is king for local devices, but if you need encoding for remote devices you need an media server to handle the encoding. You can use plex or jellyfin as backend and kodi as frontend too
Bc its much more primitive and doesnt have the user friendlyness or extra features as plex and jellyfin. Kodi is good for pulling streams from the internet. Plex and Jellyfin are better at cataloguing and processing local data

Does Jellyfin play ISO files?
Unlike Plex, Jellyfin can see the iso and adds it to the library.
However I haven't been able to get Jellyfin to play my makemkv ripped iso files.
Kodi can play iso files, so I'm going to attempt playback in Kodi synced with my Jellyfin server. Fingers crossed it works.

I am not a fan of Plex moving the direction they have gone. However it's the most reliable solution I have found. I also think jellyfin has an ugly UI.

Yeah jellyfin definitely has a lot of issues. Getting some of the movie art covers wrong, never had that issue with plex. Always log me out of my account which can be a pain in the arse because I have to constantly re enter my user name and password. Even when I'm in the middle of a movie... It doesn't have lots of filters, I like to view the bitrates and info of my movies. Guess what, jellyfin doesn't have that but plex does have such filters and I just like the look of plex i general, it's just well polished. Only thing I hate about plex is that they try to make you pay for everything and it seems more resource heavy then jellyfin.

Why would I ever transcode my pristine 2160p 90 GB Oppenheimer for example? I can stream it on my dedicated network to an Apple 4K TV infuse or my iPad Pro M1 infuse player via SMB shares?

@tcntad87 that's what I am saying storage prices from 2010 have dramatically dropped. 48TB is $550 aggregate. Plex was meant for the old era of storage.

With Plex you control your own media and can actually stream in real FHD, I'd prefer the old era and not rely on paying subscription fee for something that gets removed from Netflix lets say
@@tcntad87 I don't doubt you want to store media offline. But you need 60 - 85 TB on average with just SMB. Plex streaming mobile is just silly. Take a 4 TB external Sandisk with all the movies you are going to watch while traveling.

Jellyfin support play outside the house with little setup such as port forward, vnp, tailscale.

Yes, but you have to know (or learn) how to set that up. If you purchase a domain, setup a DNS record pointing a wildcard subdomain at your WAN IP, forward port 443 to a reverse proxy like traefik or swag, and setup the reverse proxy to proxy a jellyfin subdomain to the port jellyfin runs on, it works perfectly.
It took me a few hours to learn how to do this and set this up, though I didn't do it for Jellyfin, but just in general.

so it seems like people left plex because they didnt have a lifetime pass and didnt want to pay for normal stuff vs a free software than not everyone has heard of and something that cant be used on every platform? I think ill stick with Plex. Looking at both of them, I know half of my family would be like "the fuck is this?" when looking at Jellyfin. Jellyfins Roku app is also complete ass.

Hardware transcoding isnt needed for most people and isnt even capable on most devices like a PI most synology nas units and things like the shield for a server dont support hardware transcoding. Any arm device dosnt support it, even running the intel that is supported isnt that great. I run a I7 and have many friends and family on my plex at the same time over long distances without hardware transcoding turned on. A dell optiplex sff I7 8th gen or higher will do a great job even running free plex without the plex pass. 200TB and counting on my plex server. While I like jellyfin the apps are not as polished because of it being free and open source. Great video and good job explaining things love the content and keep it up. You really need a nice nvidia graphics card for harware transcoding to work well.

I've tested it with both AMD and intel IGPU's and DGPU's and both work fine. How many streams will depend on the hardware of course but an arc 380 can handle 6-7 streams no problem for example.
IDK, running Plex on N100 minipc and it handles 4 concurrent 4k to 1080p transcodes without problems.

Where do we start...QSV is just as effective at transcoding as an Nvidia graphics card and it's definitely more efficient. Turning on transcoding doesn't mean every stream will use it. An educated user is the best kind of user. Sometimes transcoding is unavoidable, whether audio or the occasional subtitles. Yes CPU transcoding works just fine and if that's all your server does... Great. But if you use QSV. It frees up those CPU cycles to do other things like unpack .rar's lol

I personally don't find the appeal of Plex or Jellyfinn. Do people really want to watch old movies streamed to their HDTVs, tablets or smartphones stored on some home server running 24/7 ? I mean once you watched the movie it's done ! Kodi or apps like CinemaHD and Tubi installed on the device is actually a more robust method since it doesn't rely on one central server.
You kinda answered your own question. Streaming services are of course easier, otherwise they wouldn't have such a mass appeal. But they won't be around forever, nor will they have the same shows/movies available to watch forever. That's just the tip of the iceberg of reasons. Plenty of people watching new stuff on their home servers, not sure what gives you the idea that it's only for old content.
