ive got a feeling its going to be another sea of thieves where they add features better graphics and more map and ships and things to do as they go
seems like a bare minimum situation at the moment but we have a chunk of the map coming and large ships too so definetly room for more things to do

This video makes me think of one from years ago where someone shot a fish aquarium in the first Splinter Cell game. Shoot one hole near the bottom, and a small jet of water squirts out while the water level in the aquarium realistically decreases (the fish also sink) until it reaches the water level where the bullet hole is. How many games today let us do that?

I think a fun modern parallel is the spirit/liquid-in-a-bottle effects in source 2 as seen in HL Alyx/CS2. Very unecessary and excessive in terms of progressing to a finished game, but someone on the team just had the idea and put the extra time & effort into a small but very immersive and realistic-looking detail like that.

@@Accrovideogames I think they didn't implement swimming mechanics because most gamers consider them bad. Swimming missions in videogames are often taken as memes because of how clunky and slow they are and From Software already has the poisonous swamp's meme! It is best they didn't do it.
From S. had another problem with Elden Ring. They did manage the public's expectations very well, but they completely failed in managing theirs.
ER is what I would call an unfinished game, not because it lacks something, but because there is still much to take out of the game. I even thought "this might be the first game where the DLC just takes out things from the game instead of adding them". I can't even imagine how they thought they could handle a game that big and give it the same level of detail, fluidity and sharpness of Dark Souls I or 3. Not even close. We know what we are talking about when I say "recicled bosses", "repeated dungeons"... I think they focused on making a huge map and halfway through they just realized "how the hell are we going to fill this whole thing?" and so they recicled whatever the hell they could. If they had been more grounded ER would have been 50 hours long and it would have been way better than what it is now.
After 150 hours I didn't even finish the game and I didn't try bosses so many times. I've just quit because I was sick of it. In From S. they really need someone to take them down when they plan something.

Hardware being more powerful allows more things to be simulated/calculated at the same time, but it is still not powerful enough to make all those new effects look as good as the one and only effect they did back then. It is like doing something that is theoretically impressive but is counterproductive in the end. It is generally a matter of someone really wanting to stamp their name on a system and proudly present it at the next GDC, but in game, it ends up being a meaningless detail/effect that hoards alot of ressource, and would not make any significant difference if it was not there.

Like it was made for the sake of making a game. Where is the passion, the love for the craft ? If you dont like expensive, time consuming, uncreative games then go play indie games. The real problem is the playerbase. These games ARE doing better than creative, cheap games you can find all over steam. If the consumers simply didnt buy these games and actually supported creative indie developers, then large studios would be forced to change their ways. But the fact is, they can profit with games like these, and so they do. If they could get a playerbase making a niche creative game, then they would. But that is not what people nowadays want. They would just complain about how niche and how boring and how little content there is.

Bigger and better character and object models, more complex lighting, more physics, better AI, and other things. These things take time and with more powerful hardware these things are more difficult to produce.

I like to think that the Ubisoft CEO is calling this "Quadruple A" (a rating that doesn't exist and which he's just made up) is due to the risk rating being less than dogshit, which judging by gameplay seems accurate.

      Yeah I think the same.
It's look like they worked on it a little bit and then let it rot for a decade.
We basically play the alpha version of what should've been skull and Bones.

It's water is still better than most games that release today. A lot of interactivity and the shader they use under water looks great. Odyssey improved on it further

There was a game that I used to play a lot called blackwake and it was so much fun, don’t know how they didn’t just do a better looking blackwake.

Didn’t realize Skull & Bones was from the early 2000’s 🤣. I wish things would go back to how they were like when devs actually tried and all 🫠😭

I fail to comprehend how worse games with less mechanics take longer to develop and cost more than older games that have lots of detail and can still hold up visually.
Like GTA5 still holds up pretty well, at least max settings on PC. And most of the AC games, like Black Flag and Unity.
