    Note to mackerels: balling never works when dealing with dolphins or tuna. They will just use that to their advantage.

    Which is why it's last resort.
    In the event there's no other option, it increases the chance that individuals can survive, because being alone means your chances of getting eaten are higher. If there are others around, there might be some hope of escape for the individual.

      It's simply the result of each fish trying to survive. For any individual fish in the bait-ball, this translates to: avoid the edges, avoid the top, avoid the bottom, and most importantly; DO NOT swim alone!

    If this supposed defense mechanism fails so miserably, why does it stick around? It doesn't seem to scare off ANY predators. If anything, it attracts them!

    I was wondering why they do it. I kinda wonder if this is evolution in progess. All the mackerel that school like this get wiped out and the one's that don't tend to school are left. Or maybe this giant school works the majority of the time?
