Jake Serek is a genius. If that bass was in my hands it would never leave. That tone is unreal. Love the aesthetics as they compliment the sound. Dreamy bass. You could hang a career on it without a doubt. You’re a lucky man.
You should check out some King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard's live stuff. Their bassist uses Serek Midwestern with flatwounds on. His bass tone is super good!
A warm great smelling sweater...first time that analogy was used to describe a new bass...or anything else but a sweater! I testify that Serek’s are the best. Excellent line!
I have a MW2 and it is now my favorite instrument. Serek basses are solid in build, tone, and feel. Just a great instrument. “Balanced” is definitely a key word here. If you get a chance to play one, do it!
I recently stumbled across your channel when looking at different bass reviews and I absolutely love your channel and your consistent uploads, keep it up!
Thank you!... and YES. I'm already a couple months out content wise but either email me (channel name at gmail) or reach out on the discord server and we'll line something up!
True, short scale tends to be for the entry market, but Alembic and Stanley Clarke has been killing it.....someday, I'll get an Alembic Series I/II SSB.....someday... Thank Lobster-san!
I did! Honestly, getting a bit more comfortable with it. You'll be seeing it in other videos hehe. Thank you and all others who pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and play with a pick :)
This video was brought to you by Crustaceus Financial Advisors. The quickest way to turn your savings into basses, guaranteed... or your money back... to us.
What a gorgeous sounding bass!! The OCD in me wants the top of the pick guard to follow the curve of the horns but that's hardly a deal breaker. I hope we get to see some more Serek basses reviewed here.
Great try with the pick, Lobster! When you first gripped it, I thought to myself, "This really isn't his thing, is it?" And no it really wasn't..*but* it did give us the sense of what this particular instrument would sound like plucked with the old plectrum-and that's part of the strength of this sort of simple rig. So thanks for listening and taking on the pick of the litter challenge. Appreciated as always! ;-)
Thanks man! I really appreciate that a lot. I've been practicing with it more and have been using it in more videos, so you'll definitely see more pick action and hopefully better pick action! Thank you for the words of encouragement :)
This bass looks, and sounds, pretty sweet, from one craft builder to another craft builder. One caution, the knot may add character in some sense, but knots have tendency to come loose, and vibrate. The knot site is generally a little more dense, a little harder, and has a little more instability, and tension, than the surrounding fibers. That said, if you want to buy this bass, DO buy it! Don't let a knot stop you (it can be glued if it comes loose).
Nice review. I can't help thinking of Spock's Dad when I hear the name Sarek. Not crazy about the looks, but it sounds great and looks fun to play. Great fat low end.
Gibson-esque sound for sure. I used to tinker with my old Korean Epi EB-0 to nudge the tone more in this direction, but I couldn't do it. This is a fantastic sounding instrument!
Great bass and pick up, one thing I'd like to hear is the original Gibson Mudbucker wired in Parallel, as it's 30 k D.C. resistance in Series it could work in Parallel as it halves the D.C. resistance; and 15 k is still a powerful pick up
Definitely not my bag but I definitely dig the sound, esp how it sounds much more balanced between the lower positions and the uppermost frets. I can definitely feel your excitement and that says a lot in my book.
Great demo. To me the Sereks have a distinctive sound - crisp and thumpy. I dig it. The Sacramento I have on order is all mahogany - hope it smells and feels as good as this one :)
I have one of these, almost identical (no knot ☹), and with a set of flats on it records better than any bass I've ever used. Fat, punchy, and present. The B90 is a sick pickup and the bass feels like silk underpants. Serek is knocking it outta the park
I was wondering when you were going to swap this bass with flats and then it was at the end. Short scales and flats just have a certain special tone for me. 🤘
Oh my that Serek company really know how to make an amazing bass. That’s not my favorite of theirs, but it’s still fecking amazing bass. Thank you for sharing. You are awesome buddy. Cheers Btw...a tip on pick playing, you hold it like it smells bad. No one can play with a pick if you hold it like that. I know it’s not your thing, but it never hurts to learn something new. Watch some beginner guitar videos, holding a pick is usually one of the first things they teach. They are actually held a lot like a double thumb technique, your thumb will guide it and your finger hold it against your thumb. If you can play with your thumb...you can play with a pick. I know most bass players will say “I don’t know how to use a pick” but what they really mean is “eew, I don’t want to play with a fucken pick, like some “guitar” player”. Cheers
Serek basses do have a great aesthetic-great for that Mike Watt cover band! Are you familiar with Healy Guitars "Healer" bass (Western MA builder)? Similar type thinking. Kind of "EB-O-ish".
Great question Greg! It's on the roundish side, VERY similar to that of my Gibson LP Jr. Tribute dimension wise. Very comfortable for a short scale. Thicker than a standard Jazz profile (like on the U5), but no where near a baseball bat. Think P-bass sorta kinda.
@@LowEndLobster thanks Lobster. The price isn’t bad at all! It’s like a EBMM short scale but you have the ability to choose options. I think it’s a great price point. For me, i would probably opt for the Midwestern 2 for that cutaway :-)
I like it...just not feeling the pickguard design. That part of Gibson I never cared for much so I wish Serek tried a design of their own, preferably staying on the lower bout. Sounds very nice, verrrry nice!
I just bought a Harley Benton “Bass VI” copy. And then I see this and I’m thinking “that’s what my HB sounds like” (I mean, is IS a short scale, single coil, albeit w three pickups and a 5 position switch) And I got it, shipped, for under $200
awesome video mate! thinking about getting one of this, can you tell me the lenght, width and depth of the body? before I get one I want to make sure my case fits it :)
I'm wondering if this bass can handle a bit fatter strings tuned to DGCF. You said the neck is on the thick side, so it probably will be fine (not sure if it's usual thing to do on short scale basses). Also would be interesting to stock some good midi pickup on it (to modernize the sound a bit:)
I don't know if somebody already ask you. But when you play it standing, do you have a neck dive ? You are saying when sitting down is well balance. Thanks
I watched the podcast with that gent, and as nice as that guy is, i cant get into that design at all. Looks like a coffee table to me. reminds me a bit of a dunable, but with slightly less character.

You CLEARLY don't wanna part ways with this thing. "Muh one of a kind unique knot in the wood" heh.
You need to buy this bass. Don’t send it back.

If there was an academy award for "best bass video title" this one would win hands down.
haha thank you :)

This bass has a fine tone. It really does possess that tone I look for but never find! When you kicked in the drums it sounded amazing!
Thanks Keith!

Great old school thump. Looks great too. I have a Serek Lincoln so testify how well balanced the bass is and made from quality materials.
Thanks! Enjoy your Lincoln :)
Awesome sounding bass. I'd love to see a review/demo of a standard-scale Serek, particularly the Sacramento.
Thanks James! We'll definitely be checking out more Sereks :)
nice! I'd prefer the MW2, short scales, as you know, always sound better in the upper range than 34" scale.

Thanks Metalbass! Interesting info, I didn't know that before. Thank you for sharing :)
Mahogany needs to be grain filled anyway, and you can't feel the knot, so it likely won't come loose.
That's the tone! Wow! I'm getting one of these!

Impressive tone. And i was stunned by the wood choices. I think i have never seen a bass made solely out of mahogany.

I never expected a P-90 to give a BS-DS a run for its money. Now I need to hear this with some flats to get a better sound image.

Sounds great and I like that is not a Jazz or P-bass design just made smaller. The P90 style pickup is really different and cool to see.
