Finally a review showing sound wood being split rather near rotten 3 or 4 year old cuts

For me at 42 yrs old, I'm most comfortable running in vertical position. What I like to do is get as many rounds placed around me to where when I'm on my knees, I can grab and roll to the platform on the ground. The key to saving my knee's, an old couch cushion that I put inside an old military canvas bag. I can split this way for hours. Wheelbarrow to my one side that I can throw the splits in. When it's full, then I stretch my legs and wheel to where I stack. Put on a set of 3M headphones and I can split wood for hours.

A few years I’ll be right there with you. I was out running the chainsaw for a couple hours cutting logs to firewood length and I’m still feeling it a few days later. I was lucky enough to find a college kid and my 11 year old neighbor to help split and stack last fall.

I have the Northstar 30 ton, but mine is about 8 yrs old with the Honda 160 GX engine. Works well, but yes, the I-beam makes it very heavy. If you are assembling, the I-beam is VERY heavy. I assembled by my self so I had to move the beam by my self and it was quite a strain. I just recently changed out the seals on the wheels. Went to Napa to get replacements. The Honda engine is very cold temperamental so I let it warm up for about 10 min. I bought the wings to use and had them on the splitter for a few years but took them off this winter. Since they aren't adjustable, I didn't like the smaller pieces it produced. I'm thinking up ideas to extend the shelf on the engine side so it can hold pieces of wood that I want to split to smaller pieces.

I was privileged to buy the last one at the store at the time and it came pre assembled. So far 2 years in and holding up well. I have an outdoor boiler and most of what I’m splitting now is less than 12” diameter so i just figured I’d leave the single splitter and I can make them smaller as needed. I may tackle the side this summer as well. It can be frustrating to split bigger stuff and have it fall off the other side.

Homestead Jay built a platform for when the splitter is in the vertical position. I’m going to do the same for my splitter this spring. Much rather use it in the horizontal position. Nice job 👍

considering getting one of these, but would want to use it with the 4-way splitting wings. any experience?

You need to buy the 4 way wings for that i have the same splitter an its definitely a Time Saver

I’ve looked at them but haven’t committed yet. Glad to know it’s a worth investment!
