  • How to rejuvenate, amend and reuse potting soil so you can save money by not purchasing new potting mix/soil each year. Buying new potting soil/mix each year for your container garden can be costly. It is relatively easy and cheaper to revitalize your old potting mix/soil from the last season than it is to keep buying new potting mix/soil.
In this video, I will show you how to reuse potting soil and how we renew our potting mix from the previous growing season.

Thank you for your insight & wisdom about the used potting soil. I thought that I was just being cheap in trying to save it year too year by always adding it with new potting soil to admend it. Will try your recipe this year instead. Thanks 👍

    • @TheNakidGardeners
      @TheNakidGardeners  4 роки тому +2

No you are not cheap. It is just being resourceful. I feel I can get more uses by just amending what I already have and saves me a ton of money while doing it in the process.
Where you just adding the existing potting soil to your new potting soil? Do you compost?

Hi Sidney, I recycled an old Rubbermaid patio box that was used to hold the chair cushions. The chair cushions found a new home and I used the box initially to mix my raised bed soil. Once the beds were all filled, I started to use the box for spent potting soil. I have all containers and raised beds in my garden. I don't change out the soil in all of my larger soil bag containers every year because it is just too labor-intensive. I amend the soil in the box and add to the containers and raised beds each year to top them off. 💕😊

Whenever a pot full of dormant soil comes around I just dump it all in my compost bin after thorough cleaning and incorporate back the moisture. Now the turning of the compost on a regular basis only serves as my regular exercise at 55 but this works for me.

@@TheNakidGardeners Vancouver (so just across the river from Portland, OR). Used to live up just north of Seattle but the ex moved us down here (and exited the family 8 years ago.. so it goes..) I had smaller beds at a rental with basic drip before so have a little experience with it. I have grand plans this time around but time will tell if it works like I see it in my head! I have built 4 so far with a 5th in the next couple of months as other renovations and such take over as the more immediate need. My boxes are 4x8 and 2 foot tall so I intend on lining the bottom with cut logs, twigs and hay and only putting soil in the top 16" or so. It's a German method that allows the rotting of the logs and such to channel nutrients up from the bottom as they decay. I've worked with some hydroponics as well (and ebb and flow system I built with 2 liter coke bottles, a plastic storage bin and a small fountain pump) which was pretty successful in the short term! Good luck on the farm project. I wanted to get a good acre or two but wasn't in the cards at the time and frankly, I think it would have been more than I would have been able to handle for just me.

We did an experiment (we have comparison videos)
One bed was Hügelkultur, one worm towers, one a compost only bed and just a normal traditional bed. After the growing season, we did a ph test and the worm tower bed beat all the other types.... Even was more productive. Since then, we incorporated worm bins in two additional beds. Almost two years later, the Hügelkultur bed is finally becoming productive..... It just took longer, so be patient with it. Good luck!

Gardeners also need to be careful that they don't overwater. The vermiculite will hold onto the moisture, resulting in the development of root rot in your plants.

Just letting you know I do very much the same as you do to save my soil and use it over again. I am just starting to save and store my used soil ready for next year. I have several compost bins but for the most part I add the used soil to my rotating compost bin and mix it in with kitchen scraps and maybe a scoop or so of manure. Over a week or two it will heat up and (hopefully) it will kill off any nasties that might be in there. The rejuvenated soil then gets sifted into 5 gallon buckets and stored for the next growing season. I have gradually moved over to container gardening due to health and mobility issues. So, I grow sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, tomatoes, squash, melons, onions, peppers and leeks. and anything else I don't have room for in my regular garden beds. I have had a large tub of herbs for the past few years and that has worked out well, however, I have found I need more room for them so, I transferred my herbs to an old kiddy pool. So far that is working well. I did try strawberries in the kiddy pool for a couple of years but that wasn't successful at all. simple fact of the added other materials ans growing medium is added. We add by how it looks along with peat moss.

What is great about maintaining your existing soil is that you get educated about how plants work.

Good video! Thank you! I noticed You emptied some cloth containers. I just saw a video on their benefits and wondered if you found them giving better results than routine containers. I had trouble last season with some of my plants in containers thriving. They were quite slow in adapting to their new environment and I thought maybe I overdid it on the amendment quantity I added to used soil. I used Restore. The plants ultimately revived but took at least a month. Then recently I saw the video post on
landscape bags being better for drainage etc. and thought maybe drainage was my issue. Bottom line, what was your experience with the landscaping containers?

We LOVE fabric containers. There are some pros and cons to them, just like with any other containers.
The pros: The allow your soil and roots to get a lot of airflows which allows the roots to air prune themselves. Air pruning happens naturally when roots are exposed to air in the absence of high humidity. The roots are effectively “burned” off, causing the plant to constantly produce new and healthy branching roots. If roots are not exposed to air, they continue to grow around the container in a constricted pattern. This is a result of root-bound plants when you pull them out of containers.
The cons: You have to constantly water them since you are allowing a lot of air to flow and dry out the growing medium. When you water more you are flushing a lot of the nutrients in the soil so you will have to fertilize more often.
Make sure you get some fabric containers with good handles and handle placement. The good thing about containers you can move them in different spots in your garden to either get more sunlight or less sunlight. Or bring them in if it is too cold or hot.
Another reason we do a lot a container gardening is we are able to control the growing medium. We grow a lot of nightshade plants, i.e. tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and okra. Those plants love very acidic soil and thrive very well when the pH is just right. So if your plants are not thriving as you want them to, check the soil pH before adding fertilizer.
Hope all this helps. What hardiness zone are you in?

@@avontowler5023 Today, most vermiculite is safe. However, that is not to say it cannot contain asbestos. I did a search and believe they are talking about vermiculite insulation. Most asbestos plants were closed since the late '70s/early 80s. The one plant that vermiculite was being mined from in Libby, MT was closed for almost 30 yrs and the EPA has made sure no one has been selling anything with asbestos in their products.
With that being said, do your own investigation on where you purchase your products. I am not sponsored or advertise for the products I use but never had any issues and trust the ORMI standards.

yes, enough harvest for myself, but hardly any to share, none to store. the number of plants, i should have been begging ppl to take! 3 24" tall raised beds, several half-barrels, several 5gallon buckets, pots around the yard just to hold the overflow of plants. tiny tomatoes in the window boxes. tomatoes, okra, cucumber, peppers, squashes. lettuce leaves did fair until got too hot. ive ordered some heat tolerant ones. i started the seeds really early via winter sowing in jugs, was run over with plants. didnt know it was wrong time for brassicas, so those were doomed, sowed more brassicas 4weeks ago, none sprouted. gotta be the dirt. used new bagged top soil, manure, potting soil, vermiculite, peat. have ordered perlite. used fish emulsion 5.1.1 great greening, but the 0.10.10 liquinox bloom is when i saw roots not pulling in the food.

Well, as I said before, we have a LOT of containers. I think 30 at the time filming. Let's say at the min, it would take 15 bags of potting mix to fill. That would have been roughly around $125. Just the peat moss ($10), Black Kow ($6), vermiculite ($16), perlite ($20) equals to about $51. And you notice I still have much more to use for another season.
Disclaimer: IF you do not have a large container garden then this method MAY NOT be beneficial for you.
      Hope that answered your question.
