I think the interior is perfect for the role of the GR86. I wanted a 90s car with carplay and warranty. That's what the interior gives me. Every control is an actual button or knob and is very driver oriented.
I absolutely adore my GR86. There's really nothing else left like it on the market. I plan on driving it until it dies. Or I die. Sideways and smiling through the gates of Valhalla🏁
People complaining about the lack of nice materials and flashy design is crazy to me, what do you expect from a $30,000 car in 2025? The car is simple and has everything you need, and nothing you don't. Compared to the first-ten BRZ/86/FRS, it is so much better and much more well-made. The screen naturally isn't that good, but with it on Apple CarPlay it really is like every other modern car screen. I put a glass screen protector on it and it gave it some more clarity while protecting it at the same time. For the price though, I overlook all of the "flaws" and love it for what it is in todays culture of cars having more and more speed with less and less feel.
"I just think there are a couple of easy places to really improve the interior that weren't used, but I also get the car is supposed to be inexpensive"
100% agree. After three years with the base BRZ, I have no complaints about the interior or tech. I didn’t buy it for tech. I do wish the passenger seat was height adjustable. Other than that get, drive, and enjoy.
I wish the head unit had better resolution and was more responsive. My cheap aftermarket ATOTO unit in my Impreza looks better and is more responsive but worse again is the head unit having many settings for the car baked into it so I don’t see any opportunity to ever change the head unit out unless someone can emulate those controls in another head unit specifically made for the twins.
I'm 50 and plan to buy one. My only hesitation is "winter is coming". I see on other channels, that its fine in the snow with snow tires. I just don't want the first year of ownership to start in the snow.
Thank you for reviewing this car and not comparing it to Miata. I just wish the price wasn't in used Corvette territory. Very nice, used Corvette territory. I can forgive the lack of modern amenities because it's part of its charm. Great review as always, Alanis!
I was thinking the same thing. As an owner of used corvettes I highly recommend going that route. That said, with slight tweaking and better tires, the 86/BRZ are way quicker than they should be on the track. If you’re into that stuff.
Yeahh, but a c6 vette in this price range has a slew of electrical issues, torque tube failures, crank hub failures. All costly issues compared to this affordable car.
This is a real car enthusiast telling full details giving you informative knowledge. Covering everything in and out. Better buying decisions can be made by watching a good review like this. Toyota needs to keeps all the fun cars with a few manuals even if it’s on special order basis. For those who might demand something more than an CVT automatics. That’s kind of a problem with all auto makers, wanting to do away with manuals because people of the younger generation mostly don’t want to (work) behind the wheel. I was once told that that was inconvenient. I was confused. I only like driving manuals.
Toyota has several cars still in production that all have manual options! you can get every car in the GR family (GR86, Supra, GR Corolla, GR Yaris) in manual, the new Tacoma trucks come in manual, and so do the V6 Tundras. hell out of all the Japanese automakers, they offer the most new cars with manual
This is great. Very detailed. A good intro to the car. For people who are new to car enthusiasm, this video is a gold mine. Thank you for your service.
I got my GR86 last December as a graduation gift after finishing college. Trueno Blue 6 speed manual transmission, loving it so far only 3500 miles or so.
I really like this car, I suspect this car will be a future classic. There was once a time when the Honda NSX and Lamborghini Countach were sold for pennies on the dollar, and while I am not comparing those to this car, I do think there will be a time when the electrification trend continues into the future that people will yearn for gas powered cars exactly like this, and they will go up in value. Great video as always, Alanis!
I watched Chris Harris review about GR86. He said 'this is how a sport car should be'. I bought it! Handling and other characteristics are excellent, which is the most important thing in a sports car. Simple as that.
@@AlanisKing Unfortunately, the Trueno Edition is not available for purchase in Europe, so I picked up the Premium version, black. I think the Brembo Brakes looks gorgeous, they're on my wish list plus some minor mods 😌
2023 GR86 owner. The car gives me no outstanding reason to love it, but I absolutely do. It’s hard to explain it unless you’ve driven it. Enjoyed your review of it.
I may have the BRZ but I’m utterly confused why these aren’t flying off the lot. It’s a blue collar Porsche. This is nearly a perfect street sports car. Built to have fun almost within speed limits. Nothing is more joyful that sub 3k lbs & 200+ hp. Infotainment who cares with CarPlay. Cheap interior… 1st I’m looking down the road or finding apex’s. 2nd only real cheap where you don’t touch. Plus who cares this is a fun sports car with enough room & compliance to daily which I do in my 50’s. I traded an Alfa Romeo Guilia Ti because of manual & stats. I ordered mine before any inventory was available to test drive but after a NA MX5 and 240SX I knew what the car could be. It exceeded my expectations. For the 1st time if my BRZ gets wrecked I’m buying another. Gonna drive her till I can’t work a clutch
You know it's funny - I wanted one of these too, but when it came to hitting the same metrics I find I could do so with the ill fated Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky. Get their turbo version and you're in similar weight and performance ratios with convertible ability to boot. Swap out the basic head unit with another double din compatible and a back-up cam if you want, and you can be similarly equipped for much less. It's GM so you'll definitely have that cheap interior! I won't say it's for everyone, but it was for me. Of course if you want something new - this is the way to go undoubtedly
@@TrojanRabbit521 There is no turbo version from the factory. Finding one is hard everywhere. They hardly make any to begin with. Then, most drivers think that rear-wheel drive is inherently dangerous (and most dumb salespeople think the same) and they don't even ship any to regions where snow falls. Getting mine was a huge hassle, but totally worth it. I love the car.
Well done, Alanis! I appreciate how intricate you get with each review and the pros and cons of various components and features. Keep up the good work!
I like the enthusiasm for the car, nice video 😊 Just a note @5:20, the excess RTV that collects in the pickup doesn’t starve your engine of oil fyi. There hasn’t been any engine failures from it. There is a separate and completly different cause of oil starvation only in an extreme case of sustained rpms above 5k with high G loads in turns.
That is a huge roadtrip, much longer than my recent trip from Cleveland to Ashville (only days before the flood!). But my wife and I thought it was a great roadtrip car for the two of us. This car was built for Appalachia.
I like to call this a little pocket rocket! Toyobaru? I like it! Has a nice ring to it….Lol! Congrats on the UA-cam partnership! The best is STILL yet to come!
The interior is perfect for me. Retro style. Physical buttons and dials. Has everything you need, but not overpacked with unnecessary features. I cannot stand the massive panoramic touch screens on most new cars.
Great job on the video! I appreciated the finer details about the shifter, seat heaters etc. I also feel like it's rare to see so much quality b-roll, both things stood out to me. Keep up the good work
The GR 86 is the hero we need right now but not the one we deserve, most of you people brought the death of the fun car to yourselves. And it's fine, you get what you like and we do all love the modern amenities :) I love small SUVs with screens, cameras, practicality and CVTs But I just find that there's something special about the GR 86 and MX-5. Or the Cayman/Boxster, Emira and 911s if you're rich, they are the most fun cars out there because they are involving. Just pure, unadulterated driving fun, and that's why the GR 86, Cayman and 911s are my favorite cars. They don't even get troubled with too much power. That being said, of course Lamborghini is my favorite brand out there even though they are not manual, have too much power and are the antithesis to everything I love in cars. (Small, Light, Manual and involving) Also, I love how you, Alanis, describe how the many different elements feel, like the clutch pedal having no action for some inches and things like that. All in all, the GR 86 is a very special thing, and it will always have a place in my dream car garage comprised of Lamborghinis and Bentleys
Toyobaru 😂😂😂 That’s a new one! I’m behind on your videos chronologically but this video continues to prove that you learn something new every day! I thank you for that
The turn signals is something you get used to pretty quickly, push lightly for 3 blinks and fully hard for on. Even after 18 months of ownership I still make the odd mistake when changing lanes. I do like the action though.
As someone else already noted, it's impressive you did this review without ever comparing it to a Miata! I test drove one of these in '22 and like you, was annoyed by the turn signals and the clutch feel, and didn't like the fake engine noise in the cabin (easily turned off, apparently). Plus there were already reports of poor fuel economy and engine issues. So it wasn't instant love when I drove one. Plus where I live, these are still getting big dealer markups, and two years ago the stupid dealer wanted $5K markup plus $6K of mandatory dealer-installed aftermarket packages, making it a $40K+ car--no way! I ended up getting an ND2 Miata, which I instantly felt more at home driving, plus my Mazda dealer knocked a couple of grand off MSRP. Both are great cars, though, and I'm sure I would ultimately have loved the GR86. As a Miata owner, are you willing to go on record to say which you'd prefer--an ND3 or GR86/BRZ?
GR86/BRZ need some free tweaks to feel better. Adjusting clutch pedal height, removing spring, disconnecting clutch sensor, turning of hill assist combined make it feel much better. I am planning to test drive ND3 (I drove ND2 last). I think due to being convertible Miata gets ahead in fun factor. On track, twins are better for learning and going faster, for seasoned driver Miata might be more fun on track with right mods.
Had a 2015 FR-S fun car ! One of my favorite little touches was the 86 emblem on the fenders that had the 2 sideways pistons. Have a 2023 Miata now pretty similar , a little less practical but love the top down experience! Nice review ! I’d love to test drive a new GR86 one just for the hell of it.
Great video and to be honest, the cinematography on this made the GR86 looks the best I’ve ever seen it in video … and I have watched everyone’s videos on the car. Kudos!! Great history and full review too Happy Halloween to you, the camera guy and most especially Portia ! 👊🏻🎃😎
I actually like the “old fashioned” panel with buttons and a plain screen. That’s what I have in my 2024 Cayman. The rest of the interior looks great too. Would love to drive this car someday.
28k subs only? I just watched your video and cannot believe how much effort you put into your production. Definitely subbing and looking forward to more videos.
Great car and review 😉 In France we can't by any of these because we had to pay a pollution tax of 60000€, and at the end, she costs over 94000€ min which is more than 100000$. Just insane
Had the BRZ for a little while and it was so fun but I missed having boost. I replaced it with a GR Corolla but I still miss how cool the car looked and how engaging it was.
I have seen literally every review of this car on YT and this is by far the best. Its fair and doesnt attempt to critique or compare to other cars that are just not in the same class like the MX5 or S2000.
I came as far as ordering one in 2023 and was waiting on delivery until after I started learning more about the engine issues and what level of maintenance a boxer engine required in general. I quite frankly don't make enough money to maintain one of these cars especially for the 10-15 minimum years I expected to keep it. It felt great to drive the one the dealership had for test driving but I'm now looking at getting a Mustang so I have a platform that I know will last 200k+ miles while not breaking the bank on maintenance.
As someone who traded in a 22 gr86 for a CPO mustang I wouldn't necessarily agree. If you're not tracking your car keeping up with the oil level is about all you need to do on the GR86. Oil starvation is only an issue with high g right turns. However for actual maintenance oil changes, brakes and tires are all significantly more on the mustang not to mention the fuel costs for the 5.0.
@AJW0812 The thing that I noticed in researching was that the boxer engines just didn't have nearly the durability margin of the Coyote. Not to mention more maintenance items required either special tools or hauling out the engine. The 5.0 is a known quantity with fairly standard parts that can be reached by a home mechanic without a lift. I may need a little more oil when I do the changes and I might get a mile or two per a gallon less than the boxer but if something does go wrong I can either fix it myself or take it to my local shop instead hoping to find a Subaru specialist shop. The Boxer has its upsides but it's not a motor that you can think of like your more common configurations.
@@Hybris51129 I get where you're coming from. Subaru's N/A motors have historically been more reliable then the turbo motors but that doesn't say a whole lot. For the coyote you need to watch out for VCT solenoids and cam sensors but if you're comfortable with that stuff it's probably easier the spark plugs on a boxer lol
I love my slow car. Its my daily driver and grocery getter :) GR86 ftw. Need to find a good exhaust for my needs though. Little more practical than other RWD coupes, looks good, and trades just a little bit of fun for it.
I went for the Subaru version, mostly because the softer rear suspension is more livable over bumps. I went with the higher trim, as I would've had to do if I'd gone Toyota, because the base trim for both versions doesn't come with heated seats, and that's a dealbreaker in New England. The extra speakers in the sound system and the blind spot monitors are appreciated as well.
It's finally here! I've been waiting for you to review this car since the start of your channel 😂👍 I have the BRZ version. Also for 2025s, turn signal stalk changed back from BMW-style to a normal turn stalk
Got my base GR86 for $27k out the door and I can’t think of any other way I’d rather spend that money- $37k is entirely too much to spend on one of these. 40,000 miles later and I still find every excuse to go drive it.
I drove one for a day and the steering wheel doesn’t have strong self-centering pull in the steering wheel, so you can turn the wheel, take your hand off the wheel, and it stays in the direction you left it. It feels like there’s not enough positive caster. Other than that, I didn’t like the turn indicator switch because it doesn’t click into the in position and offer an audible click when it turns off so you keep checking to make sure they turned off after a turn. It’s good otherwise. Sufficient power and grip on the all seasons for street driving. You should also know there’s no TPMS if you were expecting it.
Love mine! I was never a huge fan of the design of the first generation. I much prefer the more mature looks of the second gen. I wish the performance pack was available when I got mine.
The turn signal is annoying and the wipers are so loud too. But still love gr86, its not an expensive car but definitel a head turner. Its a simple , good looking car.
I wanted blue, but you cant spec toyotas and the dealers get the allocations they get. Love the dark gray i got though. Before i left the dealer with my 86 i made the techs turn the fake engine noise off in the computer. The 8 speaker upgraded sound system is a huge improvement over the base model, but its still not great. Regarding the turn signals, I hated them at first, but i got used to them quickly and really like them now.
With more power, comes more weight. With more weight, you get a less connected feeling car. The only true competitor to this imo is the Miata, and both of those vehicles have a certain feeling you get when your driving it, almost as if you and the machine are one being instead of just piloting a vehicle. Maybe we should stop complaining about the lack of power in these vehicles, because if we dont, there may very well be no vehicles of this genre in the near future.
Yes, our favorite segment is how many Alanises can fit in a given vehicle's trunk. I'm surprised the trueno edition is available in a color other than white considering those black vinyl? details, it kind of screams it needs to be in those panda colors....Now we need to find a gutter to hook up the wheel while cornering. In any case, I think there's a reason why cars like this can be up to a certain point a bargain to buy if you're planning to keep it long term, and these cars only become more and more scarse, or are only available from higher priced manufacturers, like Porsche now doing a whole song and dance that you can still get a manual transmission from them....at their price. Meanwhile old used hot hatches from the pre infotainment era are still there, much like this car with their strengths and vices you need to account for and drive around to get the most out of them. THAT's driving fun in my book and depending on the car something accessible even at legal speeds. I like the way ads are integrated, which is something I've noticed before. The ones here featured for Magna are interesting since it's not something I can straight up buy but still we get to learn what type of tech OEMs offer their customers. Pretty cool! Loving the content and here for more...looking forward to your opinions on a certain new for 2025 (if mostly unchanged) minivan I saw over at your instagram.
I’m soooo excited for the van! Thank you for watching 🤠 We’re noticing that basically no one is skipping the Magna segments, which is SO cool. I think they’re really interesting, and we try to relate them to the video topic so folks learn stuff 🤠
There is updated info on the engine oil issue. There is track data that suggests the oil starvation is a compound problem or possibly two separate problems. The rtv issue is well documented and that alone makes me very nervous about this purchase. In addition track data shows oil starvation issues during high g corners, mostly right hand corners. Car is probably fine as daily but I would not track it as is. And even as a daily, most highway on-ramps where I live are sharp right hand curves so I am concerned for me it’s not a good bet as daily either. The other thing I want to point out is that the engine low center of gravity on these cars is questionable. Sure the aluminum heads cylinders are horizontal, but everything else heavy is as high as possible …. alternator, battery, ac equipment. My sense is that the Miata inline 4 has about the same center of gravity.
What do people think about the “2023 Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary Edition?” There is a Japanese Import model in “Flame Orange Metallic” in the U.K. 001 model for sale which is the first model in Europe.
14:37 don't criticize Toyota for the lack of usb-c port. Complain to Apple for going against standards AGAIN! If they gave you a standard usb-c - USB-A cable you wouldn't have to buy their chargers and just use any old one you already have, but noooo. Hope you get the point :/
It was the go-to insult for the first gen (which, as a former owner, I can confirm was indeed slow), and they're just still using it for this car because they're unimaginative. It's dumb because you never see the GTI or WRX called slow, even though those have virtually identical 60 mph and quarter mile times.
I guess ppl don't want to walk in circles because their left leg is stronger 🧐. personally, I think ppl have forgotten how to have fun while driving and usually focus on a car's negative attributes (low power, tight back seat, small trunk) rather than the positive ones (excellent communication, sharp predictable handling, low cost ownership, etc.). No, the 86/BRZ were never meant to haul 5 ppl, or tow 4k lbs, or venture off pavement...but neither was the Porsche Carrera 911. The 86/BRZ is an excellent sports car and is deserving of more praise and attention. However, it usually falls in the shadow of more powerful cars (911, Mustang, Cayman, Supra, Z) because too many only focus on the power and not the car as a whole. The 86/BRZ can't fit every lifestyle, but it fits in more than you think...
For me the bigger annoyance is actually the fuel gauge. It's digital and uses 12 big blocky bars. Each bar roughly represents a gallon, which means there's like a 0.9 gallon margin of ambiguity on the indicated fuel level. Even worse, empty on the gauge isn't empty in the tank. Having filled the tank around the time that last bar went out I now know when it goes out it'll take about 11.2 gallons to refill the tank. But it's a 13.2 gallon tank, which means those last two gallons don't display on the fuel gauge. So if the gauge is showing no bars it could mean you have enough gas to go another 50 miles or it could mean you'll run out in 50 feet.
Third comment, but i did want to share my least favorite thing about the car from factory, as an owner with nearly 30k miles.... the taillights look bad to me. First thing i did when i got the car was order new taillights, new sidemarkers, and new puddle lamps. Its definitely good that my biggest complaint so far (not including the stealership trying to charge for things that are supposed to be free) is purely cosmetic with tons of affordable, wuality aftermarket options
Back when I was 23 and shopping for my first "new" (ie not 30 years old) car, I was choosing between a 2017 GR86 and a 2018 MK7 VW GTI. I ended up choosing the GTI for practicality and comfort (I have a dog, drive long distances, etc.) but damn, I was so impressed by that first GR86 I drove! I'd still like to own one someday, maybe for a track car!
Hearing you talk about RWD being unforgiving in the corners reminds me of my old Fiero with performance mods. If you didn't corner correctly in that thing, it would spin you like a top! It had a great clutch, though, but only I could drive it...if you so much as thought about releasing the clutch, it would fully grab while still on the carpet, but I was able to shift so smoothly that people often didn't realize I was even driving a stick! Apple CarPlay...I don't get the appeal of wireless CarPlay. It's often laggy and doesn't always stay connected. I prefer wired. My CX-90 has the connection in the center console, though, so you have to keep your phone in there or pull the wire through, which is kind of annoying, so I keep my phone in the console which is safer anyway.
Tons of people say they don't understand wireless, and I totally get it! I just point it out because for someone like me (who switches cars a lot), it's really important. If you have multiple cars or have a fleet for work, it's something to note. You don't just want to keep buying a dozen chargers at a time imo
You’ve managed the impossible: waxing poetic about how “raw” and “pure” this car is while simultaneously lamenting that it doesn’t have a high-end laptop glued to the dashboard and seat warmers that could roast a turkey. It’s almost as if you forgot what “budget” means-or that a $30,000 sports car can’t just morph into a luxurious grand tourer without costing more. Half of the review is nothing more than “compliment sandwiches.” One second it’s “This is charming and nostalgic,” and the next it’s “Where’s the fancy infotainment and Hellcat-like horse power?” As if a $30,000 sports car should have all the creature comforts of a luxury cruiser without the price inching upward. You repeatedly remind everyone that it’s an enthusiast’s car. For the rest of you reading this, maybe consider that it’s a niche product for enthusiasts who understand that “raw” and “analog” come at the cost of cushy details. This car is not here to cradle you gently while you sip your latte and scroll through your phone at high speed. You also mention that Americans “just aren’t into cars like this,” as if that somehow makes it less valid. Again, for those of you reading along, niche cars aren’t designed to please the masses-they cater to those who know exactly what they’re getting. While I'm paraphrasing, statements about missing modern luxuries or that it doesn’t coddle you like a high-end cruiser kind of defeats the purpose. This thing is meant to be driven and enjoyed, not admired for how well it simulates a rolling spa day. The GR86 isn’t pretending to be a tech-laden supercar or a plush family sedan (Yes, lol, I know thats false, it is actually acting like a family sedan for insurance reasons, cough, cough, useless backseats, cough). Starting off by acknowledging it’s an enthusiast’s machine, then nitpicked it for not magically becoming all things to all people tho is odd. Either accept that it’s built for a certain kind of driver who prefers tight handling over touchscreen grandeur, or go shop for something else entirely. At some point, you have to own the fact that this car is exactly what it set out to be, and that there’s nothing wrong with that.
it's nice that a car like this is made at all. thanks, initial D. that said, I'm just not impressed with subaru engines, and I would only own this chassis with a swapped drivetrain once the aftermarket and swap pathways mature. electric steering is also a major dealbreaker. I'll keep enjoying my $5k AW11 with 200k miles and let others find out the longevity limits of the boxer. great review!
This is what got me to bail out of the GR86 I ordered. A maintenance heavy motor that has a tendency not to do well with lateral G forces in a car that is marketed on having really good handling. I couldn't afford the repair bill if I unknowingly pushed it too hard on a turn one time too many.
I got a Subaru Legacy Wagon, in 1990, I believe it the first year for the Legacy. I was a great car, but the engine died after about 10 years... I don't remember why, but I was still young enoungh not to worry about things like ... umm oil! lol
They clutch feel thing can easily be fixed with a thicker clutch stopper. Idk why they did this with the American cars but their stoppers are particularly thinner.
I think the interior is perfect for the role of the GR86. I wanted a 90s car with carplay and warranty. That's what the interior gives me. Every control is an actual button or knob and is very driver oriented.

Exactly, I had a 15 wrx for 8 years, and the only thing I was missing was a carplay. Other than that; there is not much to add to a $26k base model
what do you think about the engine blowing up and failing? theres a lawsuit now and it happens so often this is likely a real problem

Appreciate this so much. Thank you. What a fun little car
I was thinking the same thing. As an owner of used corvettes I highly recommend going that route. That said, with slight tweaking and better tires, the 86/BRZ are way quicker than they should be on the track. If you’re into that stuff.
Corvette would be 15 years old though. You can get 10 year old frs for fraction of that.

Great Video btw👍🏻
Thanks pal ❤️
This is great. Very detailed. A good intro to the car. For people who are new to car enthusiasm, this video is a gold mine. Thank you for your service.
The whole fitting into the trunk thing is hilarious. That was great.
This means so much. Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it 🤠
I got my GR86 last December as a graduation gift after finishing college. Trueno Blue 6 speed manual transmission, loving it so far only 3500 miles or so.
Yesssss congrats!
@btrdangerdan2010 Does your family have an extra room in the home?
@@thealternativefactor6694 it's my garage prince. My parents live elsewhere
I once asked my parents to get me a $10 toy after consistently topping the class. I was not spoken to for an year. Now i bought my own Gen 2, BRZ
My neighbor has a Neptune Blue one, and let me take it around the neighborhood. Even at residential speeds, it's a blast. Definitely a future classic.
Ahhhhh I’m so glad you got to drive it
The older feel of the interior is what I love about it, it feels like a early 90s interior
Totally fair! It’s fun
You are a great reviewer. One of the few people that don't bore me and speak to what people want to know. Great video! Subbed! Cheers!
Awww thank you so much. This means a lot
Thank you always for watching. I look forward to the cat pic in the comments every week
I watched Chris Harris review about GR86. He said 'this is how a sport car should be'. I bought it! Handling and other characteristics are excellent, which is the most important thing in a sports car. Simple as that.
It's great. Hope you love yours
That’s amazing. Happy for you, and thank you for watching
Love this. Glad you found a car you’re so deeply passionate about
You know it's funny - I wanted one of these too, but when it came to hitting the same metrics I find I could do so with the ill fated Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky.
@@sparksterz I had my eyes out for the turbo version but couldn’t find one for sale in my region. Must be a fun car since people hang on.
@@TrojanRabbit521 It is fun, but also a concern that anything cosmetic happens and insurance wants to total it due to part unavailability. 😅
I love the car.
just got my 24 gr86, its amazing. no question, no doubt
Love that. Enjoy it!
Well done, Alanis! I appreciate how intricate you get with each review and the pros and cons of various components and features. Keep up the good work!
Thank you always Marc 🧡
I like the enthusiasm for the car, nice video 😊 Just a note @5:20, the excess RTV that collects in the pickup doesn’t starve your engine of oil fyi. There hasn’t been any engine failures from it. There is a separate and completly different cause of oil starvation only in an extreme case of sustained rpms above 5k with high G loads in turns.
Thank you so much for watching : )
Alanis, I remember you from Jalopnik and its so cool to see you have your own channel woth chunky reviews. I appreciate you! ☺️
Awwwww thank you so much Caleb. It’s an honor that you’re here
I took me and my wife on a 5800km roadtrip tenting in the rockeys from manitoba in my 23 brz and it was a blast
Love this
That is a huge roadtrip, much longer than my recent trip from Cleveland to Ashville (only days before the flood!).
Awww thank you for always being here ❤️
The interior is perfect for me. Retro style. Physical buttons and dials. Has everything you need, but not overpacked with unnecessary features. I cannot stand the massive panoramic touch screens on most new cars.
Totally fair
You absolutely nailed it, Trueno Blue Base and get bronze wheels aftermarket. Great review as always!
Blue and bronze never fails. Thank you 🤠
Great job on the video! I appreciated the finer details about the shifter, seat heaters etc. I also feel like it's rare to see so much quality b-roll, both things stood out to me. Keep up the good work
Ahhhh thank you so much. Appreciate you being here
I used to read your essays on another publication.
I think you nailed this as a solo presenter.
Omg hi! Thank you so much
The GR 86 is the hero we need right now but not the one we deserve, most of you people brought the death of the fun car to yourselves.
And it's fine, you get what you like and we do all love the modern amenities :) I love small SUVs with screens, cameras, practicality and CVTs
But I just find that there's something special about the GR 86 and MX-5.
(Small, Light, Manual and involving)
Also, I love how you, Alanis, describe how the many different elements feel, like the clutch pedal having no action for some inches and things like that.
All in all, the GR 86 is a very special thing, and it will always have a place in my dream car garage comprised of Lamborghinis and Bentleys
This comment made me smile. Thanks for liking cool cars, and thank you for being kind about my review style
Toyobaru 😂😂😂 That’s a new one! I’m behind on your videos chronologically but this video continues to prove that you learn something new every day! I thank you for that
Awwww omg thank you for watching them all
@@AlanisKing No problem
Thanks for another excellent review video!
Thank you for being here ❤️ hope you’re having a great week
The turn signals is something you get used to pretty quickly, push lightly for 3 blinks and fully hard for on. Even after 18 months of ownership I still make the odd mistake when changing lanes. I do like the action though.
It was required flaw otherwise be too great for price.
Hahahahaha
BRZ gang here! I want to punch the turn signals in the face every day since I bought it hahah!
Omgggggg I have to see the BRZ someday
Thanks for watching 🤠 I’d go ND3, but I do have a Miata bias. It’s just too perfect
Great review, thanks!
Thank you for watching 🤠
Nicely done , clear concise review, Through breakdown of the engine functions 👀👌. Ok Alanis I see you 👀
Appreciate this, David
Had a 2015 FR-S fun car ! One of my favorite little touches was the 86 emblem on the fenders that had the 2 sideways pistons. Have a 2023 Miata now pretty similar , a little less practical but love the top down experience! Nice review ! I’d love to test drive a new GR86 one just for the hell of it.
Yes! That was so cool!
Alanis, you consistently have the best background music of any car channel out there. Bravo!
Awwww thank you. That part is all husband!
Outstanding 🤙🏾😎
🤠
GR86 & GRS(upra) are the best bang-for-buck cars you can buy new. Hope to own both together someday soon.
I’d go GR Corolla over Supra! It’s sooooo special
Thanks, I asked you for this :)
I decided I'm buying one. I think this will go down as a timeless design along the lines of the Integra Type R or the S2000.
It’s sooooo good
Gotta take that clutch pedal spring out. Improves it 100% and it's a free mod!
Love this
Great video and to be honest, the cinematography on this made the GR86 looks the best I’ve ever seen it in video … and I have watched everyone’s videos on the car. Kudos!!
Great history and full review too
Happy Halloween to you, the camera guy and most especially Portia !
👊🏻🎃😎
Thank you so much Ted 🤠🤠
I actually like the “old fashioned” panel with buttons and a plain screen. That’s what I have in my 2024 Cayman. The rest of the interior looks great too. Would love to drive this car someday.
Highly recommend. Cayman is an awesome choice too
Great review, Alanis. You've gotten so good at this! I'm impressed. Really enjoyed the video. Looks like a fun little car to drive!
Awwww omg thank you. I really appreciate this
Looking good!
28k subs only? I just watched your video and cannot believe how much effort you put into your production. Definitely subbing and looking forward to more videos.
This is so kind of you. Thank you. It’s just me and my husband making them, and we really do put a lot of love and effort into this
What a beauty! the car looks good too!
Great car and review 😉
In France we can't by any of these because we had to pay a pollution tax of 60000€, and at the end, she costs over 94000€ min which is more than 100000$. Just insane
Thanks for watching Tom 🤠
Had the BRZ for a little while and it was so fun but I missed having boost. I replaced it with a GR Corolla but I still miss how cool the car looked and how engaging it was.
The GR Corolla is so incredible
Alanis posts. I watch, I comment, I drop a like.
Always appreciate you being here
I have seen literally every review of this car on YT and this is by far the best. Its fair and doesnt attempt to critique or compare to other cars that are just not in the same class like the MX5 or S2000.
Agreed, she's passionate but also very relatable.
This thread made me smile so much. Thank you both
Amazing boxer engine.
Hello from me to you.
Good energy from Denmark
Jorge
Jorge from Denmark! Thank you for being here!
I love mine, lots of power after adding Harrop sc 😊
I’m so glad. It’s a great car
Heated seats are the best
@3:40 it’s because the 86 is set up to oversteer more while the Subaru is intended to be more balanced
great review!!! thx
Thank you 🤠
Another great video Alanis. Interior lets this car down though imo. Too many compromises, even at its price point. Keep ripping.
Thanks pal ❤️
Spark plugs are hard to get to but everything else is much easier to get to.
It's finally here! I've been waiting for you to review this car since the start of your channel 😂👍 I have the BRZ version. Also for 2025s, turn signal stalk changed back from BMW-style to a normal turn stalk
Ahhhhh thank you 🤠 glad it’s back to normal!
Got my base GR86 for $27k out the door and I can’t think of any other way I’d rather spend that money- $37k is entirely too much to spend on one of these. 40,000 miles later and I still find every excuse to go drive it.
NICE JOB. Hope you love it
My dream car right there 🙏
It's so fun
That Hakone edition is beautiful. I love my Halo with the Bronze wheels.
It’s soooooo good

Have you tried drifting with wheel that isn't completely round? It's a lot of pain and that's what a lot of people buy these for
I drove one for a day and the steering wheel doesn’t have strong self-centering pull in the steering wheel, so you can turn the wheel, take your hand off the wheel, and it stays in the direction you left it.
It has TPMS and a switch in the glovebox to swap to a second set of sensors for track tires.
Constant radius steering wheel is gooder than D-shaped. It’s weird when you unexpectedly grab the flat spot mid turn.
Love mine! I was never a huge fan of the design of the first generation. I much prefer the more mature looks of the second gen. I wish the performance pack was available when I got mine.
It looks sooooo good. Glad you love it
The turn signal is annoying and the wipers are so loud too. But still love gr86, its not an expensive car but definitel a head turner. Its a simple , good looking car.
Totally agree
gr86 is very fun to drive
Very
I wanted blue, but you cant spec toyotas and the dealers get the allocations they get.
AWESOME choices all around
The performance pack is worth it.
Trueno Blue would look amazing!
Regret selling my Laguna Seca Blue E46 M3.
Ooooh I know that was pretty
Holy shit she actually knows what she’s talking about. Great review, well done!
🫡 thanks for being here
14:37 don't criticize Toyota for the lack of usb-c port. Complain to Apple for going against standards AGAIN! If they gave you a standard usb-c - USB-A cable you wouldn't have to buy their chargers and just use any old one you already have, but noooo. Hope you get the point :/
I agree! It sucks that it keeps changing! But I always have to note it so people know the issues I ran into
I would love to buy that car and it's really small and cute and they should've add USB type c ports
Why do people call this thing slow it really isn’t that slow
It was the go-to insult for the first gen (which, as a former owner, I can confirm was indeed slow), and they're just still using it for this car because they're unimaginative. It's dumb because you never see the GTI or WRX called slow, even though those have virtually identical 60 mph and quarter mile times.
Another great video! Am curious as to where the new Prelude will line up against it if it makes it to market.
I want to try the new Integra so badly
I have to talk about both sides in a review!
Nothing like a pure analog sports car to make your day. The only dealbreaker would be those stupid turn signal stalks.
So true. It's lovely
Totally fair. Hope you’re enjoying the car a ton otherwise
I would probably pick the BRZ over the 86. If I'm gonna have a Subaru engine I might as well have a Subaru badge on the car.
Honestly, fair
“Isn’t that cute??”
Haha, yes it was! 😊
: )
Great review! 😎👍
Thank you 🤠
Back when I was 23 and shopping for my first "new" (ie not 30 years old) car, I was choosing between a 2017 GR86 and a 2018 MK7 VW GTI. I ended up choosing the GTI for practicality and comfort (I have a dog, drive long distances, etc.) but damn, I was so impressed by that first GR86 I drove! I'd still like to own one someday, maybe for a track car!
Great idea. I’ve heard it’s an awesome track car from friends
I just sold my 2013 86 and got a broken lotus. I miss the 86 in so many ways. I'll be looking out for when the GR86 comes into budget.
I love Lotuses. My hips just didn’t fit well in the Elise!
@ you need to add 20 chargers to your camera equipment bags. 😆
Nice shorts
Thank you for watching 🤠 appreciate you
I got a Subaru Legacy Wagon, in 1990, I believe it the first year for the Legacy. I was a great car, but the engine died after about 10 years... I don't remember why, but I was still young enoungh not to worry about things like ... umm oil! lol
Hahahahahahaha
They clutch feel thing can easily be fixed with a thicker clutch stopper. Idk why they did this with the American cars but their stoppers are particularly thinner.
It would ROCK to fix it
