For gen 7, I would have said regional forms. It was a way to breathe new life back into old Pokémon.
I would’ve second that if not for the fact the regional forms from Sun/Moon are just reskins.
It wasn’t until Sword/Shield took the concept a step further by giving some variants evolutions.
And made some of them more viable than previously
@@thatman666and boy did some Pokemon need them, like Farfetch'd, Corsola, Linoone and Girafarig
@@eljordinio7647 Girafarig doesn't have a regional form, Farigiraf is an Evolution for the existing form.
@@TheRedSmarty I was mainly talking about Pokemon who needed evolutions
Gen 6 also had super training (which made ev training easy to understand)
Mega Evolution was definitely at its best when it allowed chaps like Beedrill and Mawile to go from a low-level to genuinely dangerous creatures.
Definitely but unfortunately gamefreak mostly gave to it mons that never needed it
@@jordanvance1657 it gave Charizard my favorite a chance to come out of the shadows and be a competitive threat, I can understand some pseudo's not needing it (in a couple of cases it made them worse like Garchomp) I still wish they'd just expand upon them and create forms for other pokemon, instead of taking them out completely, though if gen 6 gets remade it'll be interesting to see how things go down.
@@dethtroy2185 tbf mega chomp isnt worse its just not worth using as your mega when its barely stronger and regular chomp is still really good
Garchomp and Tyranitar I know were discussed alot since most felt mega's didn't really improve them much, I don't know about Metagross or Salamance though. Of course the other problem at least with Garchomp was it lost some of it's speed when it mega evolved, making it kind of worse off because of that.
From Gen 6 on, stuff like Megas, Z-Moves and, more were literal game-changers.
Thinking about it seriously, I would have to say that my absolute FAVORITE change to Pokemon definitely came in Gen 7 where they removed HMs. That was the first game where I didn't need an HM slave on my team paired with several of the more useful HM moves taking up slots on other 'mons. However, I think that my favorite implementation of HMs being gone came in Gen 9 with the Herba Mystica (I also still feel stupid that I didn't realize WHAT they were until the game basically spelled it out for me). The fact that the games were open world and you could STILL travel to most places without them BUT by getting them it made it much easier to traverse the world was fantastic. I also love the idea that your ride Pokemon is permanently with you and is kind of a secret 7th member of your team. It's like the perfect fusion of HMs, ride Pokemon, and a Pokemon partner that's also tied directly to the story. The FINAL little boost you get from the latest DLC also takes this idea to a whole new level allowing you to freely fly throughout the world. I'm actually really glad that they put that ability in the DLC and NOT in the main game or I probably would've skipped over a bunch of stuff that you just naturally come across running around the world but after beating the FINAL DLC there's almost nothing that I haven't done in the game except for complete the Pokedex which I'm still grinding BBQs for.
legends arceus had one of the best mechanic changes in a while. It changes freeze to frostbite and it works like burn, except it reduces special attack instead of attack. I was really upset to learn that it wouldn't be added to gen 9. very stupid decision on gamefreak's part imo.
Imo I think freeze and frostbite should be different things maybe. I think freezing as a mechanic is just... funny asf. It never happens in my favor but I just think it's funny. why can fire types be frozen? it's so good.
Teras are incredible as a way to spice up competitive and regular gameplay, but i think my favourite mechanic of the current generation is the BOTW level open exploring, even if it takes a bit to unlock every pre-dlc ride feature. Having a game where if you see it, you can probably climb it was SO much fun
I think Tera is probably my favorite mechanic introduced from a strategic battling standpoint. I once did a competitive battle with a friend of mine where my Iron Moth was staring down a Great Tusk and a Skeledirge and my loss seemed inevitable. But when I terastalized Iron Moth into a flying type, I ended up sweeping both of them winning the battle.
Gen 5 gave us Hidden Abilities which made certain Pokemon more usable than they were before
My fav mechanic from gen 8 would be the existence of a secondary currency. I know that BP and stuff has been around forever but Watts (and now LP in gen 9) are readily accessible from the get go.
Gen 9 has overworld shinies. I just wish they had like a sparkle effect to them like in Let's Go to make it a bit easier to spot some of them.
In this order I would say gen 2 upgrading daycare and introducing eggs, gen 3 double battles, Gens 3 & 4 the vs seeker, gen 5 rotation battles, gen 6 mega evolutions, gen 7 changing the gym system to kahunas, gen 8 giving pokemon jobs, gen 9 making the daycare much more mobile
I agree about teras. Personally, I’d edit the animation and draw inspiration from mega evolution, only displaying the icon of the type you tera into instead of the mega icon. On top of that, you could have the pokemon with a layer of crystal over them and an icon next to their hp when terastalysed, showing their tera type.
best mechanic would be Exp Share for all in XY. No longer I have to train one pokemon at a time. I can train an entire team at once. Mega evolution is the worst because it gave the wrong pokemon stronger forms they didn't need and it showed up in other games that it didn't need to be in. Glad megas got excluded from SwSh onwards.
I hope generation 10 doesn't have a "gimmick".
When they get around to remaking gen 6, 7, 8, and 9 eventually I wonder if they're going to ignore the region's gimmicks in favor of whatever they're doing in that generation
honestly, I think what they should do is just expand upon the gimmicks they have, instead of creating something new. Like give more pokemon mega or g-max forms, create more solo Z-moves for certain pokemon like the starters, that kind of stuff.
Terastallizing is the most balanced gimmick we have in Competitive and in a playthrough as it can now be done in other regions through the indigo disk maybe this is the future
@@joopvanhedel1372 it's least it's not a blatant fusion of other gimmicks like Dyna/Gigantmax was, that to me is the worst of the four we've gotten so far, the others are all good. Plus your not restricted with it's usage unlike Galar's gimmick, and thanks to the DLC it's even better.
Also for gen 3 double battles are also an awesome feature! Not as game changing as abilities but still good. I agree with the whole list!
MACHANICS
Of all the battle gimmicks, Terastal is by far my favourite, thanks to what it does to battling strategy and any Pokemon using it. Take away the crowns, and it would be perfect to me.
I really wish pokemon would give back all the battle mechanics and unbreakable tms.
It's honestly annoying when we see pokemon take a step forward in battles only to go back and do something else which leaves pokemon left behind going from good to terrible
Or olive branch and just give the base forms better stats and the hidden abilities on base if megas are too hard.
Tera types are cool. Really like thoses giving pokemon some scary types either giving them stab or drop weaknesses
Nah, nah. A game with Megas, Z-Moves, Giganta, Stances and Tera would be so unbalanced that it wouldn't be funny.
I really like the way Scarlet and Violet did TMs, I can basically have whatever set of moves really early.
I thought you were JPRPokeTrainer98 by the title
They need to bring back megas either just as mega evos or evolutions on base as these pokemon have the potential within them so it could be a branch evolution or a standard one to give some of them their powers back. Beedrill could be a male version of the combee line to get his mega line back and any single stage starrer could definitely use it as an evo
No to the former, yes to the latter. Megas were badly executed.
Love Mega Evolution
Same Here ✨🤩👍
Gen 5, B2W2 specifically: the instant Repel reload.
My picks
Gen 1: Catching Pokemon in general (look it wouldn't be Pokemon without it)
Gen 2: Breeding and Time and Day
Gen 3: Abilities
Gen 4: Physical/Special split, Global trading
Gen 5: Seasons
Gen 6: Mega Evolution
Gen 7: Regional variants
Gen 8: The open world exploration with the Wild Area, Isle of Armor, Crown Tundra and in Legends Arceus
Gen 9: Terastallizing
He's definitely right about Gen 6 & 7 and Gen 8 is so divisive, many agree with that pick. Although, I will say the best thing about Generation 5 is the post game.
Items in gen 2 were kind of a big thing.
Great vid btw 👍
Still want either another Legends series game, or more Legends changes in the main series! From feeling like we were actually hunting pokemon to crafting items, also feel like... the semi-open rather than the fully open world worked better? Then again, maybe they just need more practice. Aaaannnnd a better engine. >>;
This was pretty good. You have a Happy New Year, too!
Im sorry but regional variants was BY FAR the best mechanic for gen 7!! It completely revolutionized the franchise of Pokémon!! And the best mechanic for Gen8 was most definitely Gigantimaxing/Dynamaxing!!
For Gen 2 is without a doubt shiny Pokemon the best, Shiny Hunting is the most beloved side activity players like to do.
I love Tera, best mechanic
The thumbnail said "Machanics" isn't that big a deal but it still makes me laugh
Gen 1 are so buggy that it's really hard to pick a best mechanic, but I'm going to go with the Critical Hit System
Gen 2 is gender though fixing trapping moves was a good thing. Also, several quality of life improvements were brought to this generation such as not having to go to your menu to use field moves (Flash excluded, though that mechanic needs banned) being able to increase your quanity by 10s
Gen 3 is, as you point out, abilities. Other than that I can't think of any other new mechanics
Gen 4 is the physical/special split, hands down, though a case could be made for unlimited bag space
Gen 5 is unlimited TMs
Gen 6 is Mega Evolution
Gen 7 is the introduction of regional variants, though ride pokemon is an option too
Gen 8 is probably Dynamax, though a case could be made for the Wild Area, as a prototype to the open world concept
Gen 9 is Terastilization, though making the games open world is a good thing
I love mega evolution.
I KNOW it's not a mechanic but I've gotta say that the best thing that came out of Gen 8 was DEFINITELY Legends: Arceus. It immediately shot up to the top of my tier list of Pokemon games and single-handedly saved Gen 8 from sinking into mediocrity. I REALLY HOPE we get another Legends game in the future as it was super fun just having a purely single-player Pokemon game that actually had an interesting story and that also made you FEAR Pokemon for the first time since maybe Gen 1.
While not a generation mechanic since that started in Emerald, but the overworld Ability effects are cool, and added new and fun ways of getting wild Pokémon.
The custom player options are pretty good with XY being the best, (U)S(U)M having the best custom colors, Let's Go having the best evened custom options based on the sexes, SwSh having the best gloves, and Legends: Arceus having the best custom Japanese clothes.
Not nearly as memorable? First, it's obviously technically memorable cause we're still in the generation/game of its debut
Second, I've seen the love Terastallization has been getting and it's definitely more more memorable than most of the gimmicks even rivaling Mega evolution
6:21 Very minor footnote, if I recall right, the first step toward the Physical/Special split technically happened with Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, on the Gamecube. It's not much, and gen 4 definitely deserves credit for the full implementation, but the new Shadow moves that game introduced over its predecessor actually featured a split of Physical and Special among them, despite all belonging to the same "Shadow" type and being part of gen 3. For example, Shadow Blitz would be Physical, while Shadow Wave would be Special, behaving as you'd expect moves to behave in gen 4.
For gen 6, while it kinda edges into "feature" more than "mechanic", I think the PSS is the best thing XY does by a landslide, for the way it integrates online connectivity remarkably seemlessly. It's easily gen 6's best aspect, in my opinion, and it's a travesty the way they butchered whatever remained of it in gen 7. Super Training also deserves a mention for making EV training far more approachable to a broader audience, even if doing it exclusively through this minigame is also very tedious.
For gen 7, I'm gonna say Hyper Training. In isolation, however. Providing an avenue to circumvent breeding for perfect IV's almost entirely is extremely, extremely welcome. Getting 5 perfect IV's on a mon is hard enough, even if you have a dump stat you can feasibly ignore when not breeding mixed attackers, but when you have to breed for 6? Forget it. It can seriously take ages. What I DON'T like about how gen 7 does this, is requiring level 100. I haven't played USUM, but in base SM, grinding for level 100 is seriously exhuasting. These games do not provide a good way to do this. SwSh would make reaching level 100 way easier, and then SV would lower the level requirement to 50, which is barely any trouble at all. Collecting Bottle Caps also got a lot easier. With how much of a time investment the prep for PVP is, these games really need features like this to both exist and be convenient to use.
For gen 9, I think the best mechanic - or is it a feature? Ah, who cares - is the way you can traverse the overworld freely. Putting aside what this means for the game balance and progression, just the way you can move about is honestly quite liberating, as the 'Raidon-riding feels surprisingly smooth and polished for the game it is in. With the way the game looks and runs, you'd expect riding to be a broken mess, but it really isn't. It's not entirely free of jank, of course, but most of it isn't very intrusive.
I feel gen 5 introduced the 1st z crystal idea with the type gems. Now a days theres just a normal gem. But every type had 1 in gen 5.
M A C H A N I C S
I do hope for a generation 6 remake if they add more megas that they only do it to pokémon introduced after that game cuz I feel like that would make the most sense
Gen 7 would be Poke Pelago for me. The various functions and utilities streamlined things like leveling up and farming items. It was extremely useful. Z-Moves a close second, and I do appreciate no HM’s being forced.
Gen 5 also introduced hidden abilities
I agree with you on these mechanics
They should do terra battles in area zero for people can get version exclusive if they dont have friends who play same with all legendaries with unioun bbq an perrin exclusive version quest
I can only imagine what a Pokemon game with Megas, Z-moves, D/G-max and Terastalisation would be like...
Reusable TMs are the best mechanics that started in Generation 5.
I think the best mechanic of every generation is Gen 1 Psychic types Gen 2, day and night cycle Gen 3 Abilities Gen 4 Finical and Special Split Gen 5 Hidden Abilities Gen 6 Megas Gen 7 Ride Pokemon Gen 8 Dynamax or Heavy duty boots Gen 9 Terrestal.
For unintentional gen 1 mechanic, the best should be the badge boost glitch
I like teras. The whole changing your type thing reminds me of delta pokemon. I just..wish we didn’t have the crowns. A visual effect and some cool aura wouldve been better
Another honorable mention for gen 3 are double battles
Keep up the awesome work and videos love the video
I knew Mega Evolution was going to crop up for Gen 6 and I still feel I have to disagree with it. It's interesting on paper as a way to spruce up the battle system but I feel the execution was poor. Because it was so obscenely powerful you were basically shooting yourself in the foot if you weren't using one and since It was only ever available on some select Pokemon that meant you'd see the same Pokemon all the time because they had a stupidly powerful mega. Even worse was that, while megas were given to a few Pokemon that needed it (e.g. Beedrill, Pinsir, Kangaskhan, Pigeot, Absol, etc), the first batch especially gave out megas to Pokemon that were already powerful enough without one (Gyarados, Gengar, Alakazam, Garchomp, Scizor, Mewtwo got fricking TWO!). And then there was the balancing. Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Gengar and Mega Mawile were monsters that ripped through everything. Mega Garchomp and Mega Alakazam though were probably not worth using at all over their normla counter-parts. The whole mechanic was kind of a mess in the end even if it looked cool at times. I gave it the entire generation before I made my mind up on it but by the time Gen 6 ended I'd come to this conclusion even though there were times where I enjoyed it.
Instead, for what I know will be a contentious pick, for Gen 6 I'd actually have to give a nod to the horde battles. Laggy as they were since it's five opponents instead of one or two, they made EV training so efficient in a time were vitamin use was still capped at 100. With a Sweet Scenter to spawn the horde and a strong AoE user to one-shot them I could max train a stat on four other Pokemon with 5-6 hordes in about 3 minutes. This was an absolute game-changer when it came to preparing new teams to play with. The hours it would previously take was cut down to minutes and I adored this! It enabled me to experiment far more than before as now I could realistically commit the time to it. I was so sad when they were replaced in Gen 7 with the SOS battles that were just slower and more frustrating. And it wouldn't be until Gen 9 when that vitamin limit was removed that I could experiment like this again.
Gen 9 would've definitely been either open world, redesigning textures of Pokemon to make them look more realistic, or Ancient Paradox forms. Tera Types are WAYYY too simple in game, and tedious/obnoxious competitively. It's like a more annoying version of megas, except less predictable.
For me, Shiny Pokemon were a cool mechanic in Gen 2.
I miss my op tauros 😢
I think gen 7's best mechanic would be the totems/ story by how unique it was at the time gyms were stale so they swapped it up and it was perfect for the first time
It's of my opinion that every new mechanic (and I mean big ones like Mega's Z moves, etc) past Mega Evolution have gotten worse and worse. I think what they should do for next gen is put in a new item that ADDS a typing to your existing one, giving them a new dual or even triple typing. Can you imagine a dual-type Eeveelution, or even crazier, a hyper offensive or defensive triple typed wall? That could be a big, BIG game changer and it's not nearly as broken as you might think. Sure, you get extra resistances and/or immunities....but you also get those weaknesses carried over if they're not checked by the other typings. If you're not careful, you could wind up with an 8x weakness. Oh, and the additional type wouldn't be displayed like the dumb hats of Terastallizing, so you'll actually have to figure out what you're up against. Eventually you'll learn what people use and what they don't use, so it won't be an issue.
Good morning bro
I kind of resent these gimmicks especially Mega Evolutions as we may never see some of these cool forms again to make underperforming Pokemon interesting again.
Here's hoping for new evos or even just some buffs or abilities to address the power creep, people like new evolutions to old mons, we'd be happy to have them.
I'm not going to sugarcoated it, Terastallization is probably the best pokémon modification gimmick overall, and quite frankly, it's not even close. And yet, its the one GameFreak dropped the ball on the most and by far my least favorite out of all the new gen mechanics we've gotten since XY.
The problem with every single gimmick beforehand from Dynamax to even mega evolution was how restrictive it was. Not only was it only available for a select number of Pokémon (with Gigantamax beijg ujder this umbrella), the exclusive forms/attacks were being given to either the new mons of that generation, or the same old super popular pokémon making it very oversaturated, think of how Pikachu, Charizard, and Gengar kept getting special forms and attacks instead of other Mons from different generations.
This bleeds into competitive play, where the small pool of Mega Evolution Pokemon/Meta Gigamax options, all that meant was the same old moms were either being used and/or it was too obvious which pokémon people were saving for their gimmicks in their team composition. Therefore it makes sense why so many vgc players and and more competitive members of the community didn't like mega evolution, z moves and all of the extra stuff.
Terastrializing quite clearly solves all these issues, only can be used by literally every single pokémon in the game, it, by its own proxy, will be effective on every pokémon due to the very nature of the game.
It means instead of just one pokémon being obvious to both players of being the 'Mega/Zmove/Giga slot,' now every pokémon can be is usable for this gimmick. Every pokémon on every team can virtually turn around the entirety of the game based on what Tera type the players have chosen, _at any given time becuase they all have it, and that's legitimately great!
Want to change your trick room Mon to a type that resists what it's originally weak to so that it can pull off its move? You can do that. Want to change your Dragonite to normal so you can just extreme speeds sweep your entire opponent's team? You can do that. That's not to mention the fact that just terastallizing in your own type gives you even bigger STAB which is just insane.
Terastializing not only changes the game, but makes every pokémon on your team, no matter what position they are in, a complete wild card, whereas before it was so obvious, that is was less of a wild and more of a expectation.
So you may be wondering with all this praise and giving it, why do I consider terastilization my least favorite mechanic out of the main 4? Well that's a simple answer, the thing that makes me like these mechanics isn't because they can be used super creatively or are 'competitively balanced,' I liked things like Mega Evolution, because it just looks bloody cool, and Super Saiyan 9 Lucario back in Gen 6 was the coolest thing my middle school brain ever saw.
So I'm sorry but the fact that main gimmik for this generation is a bunch of flipping hats forced onto the heads of pokémon with NPC's in the story that _only use it at the very end_ and _only_ terastillize to their the _exact same type_ rendering the majority of the gimmick pointless, really drags it down for me.
Can't believe even when they hit gold, GameFreak still manages to fumble.
Terastilization is not the best. It’s just the protein ability but better also deign wise it’s just utterly goofy and generic asf. Meanwhile Mega Evolution made fights feel very intense and ACTUALLY enjoyable compared to dyanmax,Z moves and that mediocre terastalizing. Hell Mega made Pokemon like Bedrill and Mawile. Without Mega Evolution, Pokemon would still be mid
Thumbnail says “machanics” hehe
Megas still the best, tera is great but looks silly.
Day/Night cycle.
Gen 7 should have been Z Moves and gen 8 should have been dyna/gigantomaxxing as these were all generationally exclusive
But those things suck. So they can't be the best.

Best Machanics you say?
Hi mystic 😮
I find hilarious how Psychic was by far the best type in Gen 1 but now is a running candidate for the worst type.
How?
Yet Gardevoir is on every best team possible it seems...
@@xoynialedmc Psychic aged terribly, has terrible offense for today's standards only hits 2 other types (including another bottom tier type) is resisted by 2 of the most common types in the entire game
Defensively is really bad, you only resist two types and you are weak to three of the most common attacking types in the game, in Gen 9 there is literally zero reason to want to be a Psychic type, just use Ghost or Fairy
If they do bring back megas it needs to be implemented better. I.e do not give it to mostly popular mons. Actually give it to the pokemon that need it. Also this is just fir gen 6 in general actually have the gym leaders past korrina use the damn mechanic. And stop with the kanto pandering. None of the gen 6 starters get any mega but all the kanto ones to. You give charizard a gigantimax before any of the gen 8 mons and have ti wait for dlc to even do that.
The best got to be Tera and mega evolution
HM are needed more than the stupid ride Pokemon this Videos HAS FAILED THE POKEMON COMMUNITY
Sup
I like terras, but i wish i could remove the stupid hats. they just look soo dumb!
Mega evolution was perfect in everyway and anything that's come after is significantly shittier and a failure so just go back to mega and stay with it n add other shit like gigantimax and stupid terastializing.
do sprites count as mechanics?
They would count as much as the narrative would as well.
