  • In this video we begin exploring the second layer - that is, the data link layer.
We shall remind ourselves of this layer's goals, and then talk about frames, and specifically - why we need frames.

This is the OG video series on networking concepts. I finally understood what it means when it says “communication is happening over DLL.” I used to be like “then why do we have TCP if DLL can send packets?”. I hope you continue this and put up more videos in this playlist!

"The maximum frame size of 1518 bytes in standard Ethernet is indeed relatively small compared to the data that can be transmitted in modern networks. The size limitation is primarily due to historical reasons and the constraints of early Ethernet technology. Ethernet technology was developed in the early 1970s at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and later standardized as Ethernet Version 1 in 1980. At that time, networks operated at much lower speeds than today, such as 10 Mbps (Megabits per second). The frame size was chosen to ensure that the transmission time of a maximum-sized frame would not be too long for the network technology of that era."
