Sty, chalazion, eyelid swelling, treatment and prevention - A State of Sight #28

  • A sty is caused by a blocked oil gland in the eyelid, resulting in swelling, redness, and irritation. In this episode of A State of Sight, Isaac Porter, MD discusses the causes, treatment options and ways to prevent styes in patients that have frequent recurrences. If a sty becomes persistent, it may change to a chalazion when the redness resolves, leaving a small bump in the eyelid. This can be removed by surgery.

We wish they didn't exist! However, when the oils in the eyelids become too thick or blocked, a sty can occur.

sofie. Ahh yeah hear that often... Yesterday I got into a fight with my grandma because I told her that I’m sick of my constrant eye styes. Like I get one, it goes away for like a day, then it comes back. Not to mention I get frequent pink eyes too. She just started parroting my mom about how “(i) play on (my) tablet alllll the time” and how “(i’m) antisocial” and why I “never spend time with (her)” + some lies and assumptions about the best friend I’ve had ever?? Pissed me off big time. She even had the guts to ask me if I remember what my ophthalmologist told me. I did. She said absolutely nothing about electronics so 🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼

It worked great and today it’s almost completely GONE. Got one last year and that thing had to be CUT OUT. Yep! It hurt. So do the heat and drops first sign of swelling if eyelid. Good luck to you.

I had a chalazion surgically removed 11 mths ago. I seriously thought one week later that the doctor didn't get it all...here I sit with another one in the exact same spot; I went through the surgery for nothing. Plus, the doc stuck a needle in the center of my eye because she wanted to examine it since I wasn't her regular patient. Now, I see a thin line that I thought was a strand of hair at first or something on my contact lense. It wasn't; looking forward to seeing my reg doc next mth.

I tried a compress and washing my eyelids very gently with anti bacterial soap and then I started using a cream made for styes and it just went away on its own but here we are a few weeks later and I have one on my upper left eyelid so I’ll continue to follow your advice and just wash my face a few times a day daily to keep my oily skin under control.

EyePorter: I have had a bothersome stye on my lower lid for a good few years now. It is white, and only bothersome when my eyes are itchy, or when it shows up in professional pictures - this leads to my question, as I am a professional singer who heavily relies on my appearance for my performances. It has grown and shrunk sporadically during this time, where it has never fully gone away. It is currently at a larger stage, and I am currently using an eyelid cleanser to help with keeping the area

  • @allvoice79
    @allvoice79 12 років тому

I should also be clear and state this stye is not inside the lid - it rests where my eyelashes are, and it is apparent the eyelash itself where the eye stye is located is being clogged.

Dry rice in a sock, heated a little in a microwave seems works better than water on a wash cloth because the heat seems to remain more constant and radiating. It seems to work faster in shrinking a chalazion or sty. tea bags work pretty well too, but rice in a clean clean sock holds good heat. FYI

I've had a chalazion for a couple of months now. With warm compresses it has turned very red and formed a large white head on the outside of my lid. It looks like it wants to pop but won't no matter how hard I massage it. Is there any problem with me trying to help it with an acupuncture needle. I've had three cut out in the past and my ophthalmologist is reluctant to do any more surgeries unless I go on antibiotics every 6 months. I can't do this because of my gut. He is worried about scar tissue around my eyes. Everything I have read says not to pop them but no one ever says why not.

If the oil gland has scar tissue blocking it, is removal by a doctor inevitable? I get dry eyes and itching on the lower lid right where the glands are. I think scratching it (that sounds so bad) caused and infection for a week or two and the lump formed after. It's not very big but I'm very careful now not to "scratch" when I have an itch (I rub lightly). The hot towels feel good and help with the dry eye too (I do use OTC drops).

Surgical excision of a blocked oil gland is not inevitable, but may be needed in some cases. Usually it is not scarring that blocks the gland but thick oils. Warm compresses are often a good solution.

Thanks for posting this. Very informative and helpful. I've had a sty on my lower lid for a while now and it's making me nuts. I'm going to try the treatment plan you (as well as my doc) recommended (warm compress, etc.)...my doc also gave me some erythromycin ointment..hope it works, otherwise I'm going to get it lanced.

my son had recurring sty,his eye lid would swell up.sometimes it would take months for sty to go.Until one day my muslim doctor said wash his eye with honey. He said add a few drops of warm water to the honey so you can apply it easily and wash his eye with the honey every morning and before bed.. And it worked his swelling went down the next day and his stye went by day four. it has been 6 months now his had no sty

Thanks for your reply!! Luckily the stye is pretty much gone. No more pain and not that much visible. It's been 7 days and I still have the stye but it's real small. Is it supposed to be COMPLETELY gone by now? A week later?

What you could do besides a washcloth is use a hard boiled egg the heat is constant that way you don't have to keep getting up

Oh I got this a few times before but never really knew what it was... for me it usually doesn't last that long and goes away on its own.. but I have an event to attend to tomorrow so I'm searching a remedy for it.... I woke up with it yesterday and I noticed it was a bit more swollen today but yet less painful but its itchy. ... I thought of using some warm water ... but just thought I'd do some research first before trying so I'll give it a try and see what happens.

How do you know whether your stye is healing 100 percent? I have been applying ointment on my stye after I bought the medicine from the clinic. I kept doing hot compressed. Soon the pus from the stye on my upper eyelid drain out 3-4 times. Although the stye reduced smaller but still.... the stye haven't gone yet. What should I do? I want the stye to disappear completely. Please help! Thanks!
