You said you could make a powerhammer with that lathe... I'd like to see that.
Will too
Pretty sure Will would be right on board with that!!
Marcus beat me to it
Thats a pretty good idea. A miniature Powerhammer ;D
Welcome back to part 400 of the power hammer build, today we will be working on the gold inlay
You know he’s been in England for a bit when he starts using expressions such as “bloody chuffed” lol
Noticed it too!

Respectfully disagree when your life revolves around the camera and livelihood depends on your subscribers and likes on your videos me and myself am as calm as a cucumber but still highly disappointed in the fact he is not showing any regard to Will when will has done so much for him as a partner and friend

Came here to say the same thing.
I kinda feel terrible that Alec got one in a couple days after will spent weeks building his own.
Has anyone else noticed how much more British alec is when he’s not in montana 😆
Holy smokes I literally was just thinking that exact same thing. He sounds so much more British now he's not in America.
He can't be more British though, he is British and its impossible to change it.
His accent may change though.

That lathe is any big kids dream to have and use!
I do hope you level the feet so you get greater accuracy!
One of the things I love about this chanel: Watching Alec geek out so hard from the heart that you cannot help but be pulled along.
Alec you are an inspiration. Not many people know what real work is anymore. But you are every where moving to the U.S. then back to the U.K. you have so much under your belt but you are just grinding away.
I love how the first episode he said he saved some money with Ryobi then went and spent thousands on getting a ton of steel for the SECOND workshop
Love that he's using metric again
Alec, no one deserves a smooth delivery of a working machine more than you do! Cheers!
I love seeing someone young like you understand not ONLY how to work a business properly, but HOW to repair things that were built decades before you were born. That gives me great hope in the future of the world.
I need to know what happened with Will's power hammer :( It's just too sad of a cliffhanger to leave it on!
He's probably trying tu figure out how to weld cast iron
He's not going to fix it. At least for now.

A little known fact: The lathe is the basis for the accuracy in modern engineering - without the lathe, most of the early machinery could never have been built...
True! You can do ANY machining operation with a lathe and some patience
Turns out circles make the world go round in more ways than one.
I've always heard that the lathe is the only machine that can build itself. Is there any UA-cam who has done it?
@@danielstellmon5330 Don’t let Will know or he’s sure to try!
But... the age old question for which we’ll never known the answer to... how did they make the first lathe? 🤣😂
I really like how the new old shop has a old old shop vibe! Nice to see you getting it done! Keep up the great videos!
"Bloody chuffed" - you can tell Alec has been back in the UK for a while 😂
"So I built a jig to make the job easier and faster" Wow, young Mr Steele has come a long way since he was last in this workshop space 😉
As someone who studied supply chain management in college and is very passion about it, I love when Alec mentions lean terms and lean thinking! Keep up the amazing work!
Your workshop set up videos have got to be my favourite.
last episode "I want to try more budget friendly tools like Ryobi"
Next episode "I bought a lathe that costs more then the building"
Priorities!
Also- you might be surprised that a lot of industrial equipment can be had on the cheap at auction or surplus etc. This is largely because it might be considered out of date by most of industry and is out of reach for hobbyists because of the expense and complication of moving it along with requiring a lot of space to house it. This is the reason that small milling machines are almost always more expensive than a good used full size knee mill. Supply and demand.
Digital readout alone costs few times what my car, or all my tools are worth XD Also that lathe is not even huge, just bit upscaled on what DIY folk usually go for, so industrial standard size i would say.
@@FKreider I was at an online auction where: 1 a massive vertical boring mill (lathe) 4M chuck had no takers (ie free) 2 a Makita drill go for 1.5X new. So very true.
Should a bought a ryobi lathe😂

Awesome man!! Soo cool. Looking fwd to some lathe action, that's a beast!
I just got my first mill and lathe for my garage workshop. Super excited to learn how to use them properly.
The one thing that impresses me most about Alec is that he just ... does it. Need a steel rack? Build one. No help, just build one. His drive and determination is really impressive.
thats a big steel, Steele, steel rack
"some steel arrived" and I fully expected to see his parents in the next frame. Disappointed. 😅
Hey Alec, to use the overhead lights you need to do 2 mods to them: To fix the flicker you need to upgrade the ballast in each fixture from old school magnetic to modern electronic. Make sure the drive frequency is in kHz (they all are). In the US that would be about $20 / fixture. To fix the color just upgrade the bulb to high CRI bulbs (>90) like Sylvania SunSticks or Philips Supreme.
The editing of this video is absolutely gorgeous. Phenomenal work.
It’s not “Bobs your Uncle,” it’s “Roberts your Fathers Brother.” An Irishman told me that.
I prefer "Robert is one's father's brother"
@@ferretgubbins Your asking for trouble from the apostrophe trolls, mate
Fun fact, I haven’t see this Aleks actually use his lathe in Montana

He's definitely used it a few times. And Will has used more than Alec
The shop is starting to really come together, great job!
You don't have to show us effective and smart stuff. We just came here to watch you doing the things you want to do in that moment. I would watch every video from you and just be happy about it.
Watching you push that around on a pallet jack instantly made me cringe and flashback to Will and his power hammer.
Why are these guys moving big stuff alone. get a buddy!!! Even if just for eyes
Lol that's not a big lathe. I was a machinist at a place where we rode in a cupola over our work piece.
Future help for moving steel... I ran into this problem...
I built what is basically a strong pallet, with some hefty swivel casters on it.
I jack up one end of the steel pile and place the rolling pallet under that end.
Then I pick up the other end with a pallet jack.
Now I can roll the entire stack, fairly effectively, with just 1 person.
The advantage to this over using just a 2nd pallet jack is...
1: The swivel casters allow the pallet much greater freedom of movement than a pallet jack has.
2: The rolling pallet is still able to be picked up by a forklift... so I also use it to move smaller large projects and can even lift it into a vehicle easily.
3: Use locking casters so you can stop it from rolling.
2:05 is my new favorite series of sounds

Looking great Alec! The changes you are making between each workshop are probably examples of the most valuable lessons any craftsman could gain, and you've really been able to retain and apply. Very impressive.
As a machinist I am truly truly truly jealous of that machine and you unboxing all that tooling

I wish I could have a career as a blade smith. Unfortunately as a teen girl it's very difficult to find a mentor
The injustice in the modern world is terrible I am sorry
If you look hard enough, I'm sure you can find one. Have faith.
I don't think it is because it is your a girl it I've also been trying to find a mentor. It's just sort of a lost art which makes it hard to find a good mentor.
Olivia Slus your gender makes no difference. It is tough to find someone depending on your location for everyone. I’m hoping to see your name on some blades in the next few years. Just don’t look back.
@@cre8or821 no injustice, blacksmithing is just a lost art. Certain things are more difficult for certain people. That's just how it is.

Harrison lathes are very nice and have a very good range of speed and size. Excellent acquisition, Alex. Don't forget to properly level it to avoid tapers!
Nice hearing metric coming from you, and more of the UK English phrases!
I guess an an American general election was too much for Alec, lol.
It is such a great workshop, full equipped for everything.
You should look at LED replacements for the fluorescent tubes. Got them in my garage and they're awesome. No warm up time, consistent colour and lower power usage.
hats off to that hiab driver! "anywhere in the workshop please drive" say no more
That is one heck of a lathe.
Can't wait to see what you do with it.
I hope y'all have a great day & be safe.
Congratulations on the new lathe can't wait to see more updates ❤
Lights - You can get retrofit LED tubes for the flourescents which are very good, and you can change yourself easily (on old fittings with a starter). Or better, change the whole fitting, but get a electrician to do that. that would improve your background lighting levels tremendously. just like the LED panels you have already purchaced.
It ist so great watching you using the only reasonable measurement system again.
This channel has become "Alec makes a new workshop" and I like it
Your son is going to set for life with an absolute wonderland of tools and machinery.
Moving to a separate, smaller workshop is wonderful for content qualities 😊
Congratulation to a great lathe! I usedthe exact same model of lathe for many years while i was working in an industry. Fantastic machine, i loved it. I am trying to find a smaller, more home-friendly model to buy, but there aren’t many of them for sale here in sweden, at least not any that are humanly priced.
Congratulations on that awesome Lathe machine, Alec !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to see you bring your buddy Will out there and show him the ropes in the UK. Maybe surprise him with a brand new power hammer for his shop. Lol. But definitely have him come out and do a build with you that would be cool. Good to see your still kickin ass as always.
A Toijala puukko would propably be an interesting design for you to try. It's a design from late 19th century or early 20th century finland. The knife has big bolsters on both sides of the handle and a leather sheath that has mostly been covered with the same metal used in the bolsters (nickel silver/ brass). Apparently the knife is very challenging to make and the design is very cool. If you are interested i can try to find a few articless in english about the knife.
That lathe is without a doubt the best condition piece of second-hand equipment Alec has ever bought - including the two "reconditioned" pieces he bought in Montana 🤣
I find it fascinating how quickly Alex can go from " I see it in my head" to "I build the thing." I get that with the magic of editing that it can look quicker then it actually is but the way both he and Will can visualize a solution to fabricating it always will impress me.
That being said. How long is Alex planing on using this work space? He made it sound like it was short term but this is an impressive setup and investment. I probably missed him explaining it in an earlier video.
I applaud you for seeing this as a challenge rather than a step backwards. After all you've already built up.
Hey man, that wall video wasn't a waste of anyone's time, i learned a lot from it and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Plus it was super enjoyable to watch, like all your videos! Well worth it even if it didn't work out in the end, I'd say

I really like it when UA-camrs advertise things that would be useful and or are actually good. I once had a summer job in which shipping was one of my duties, and I would have loved to have something like this. I had all my carriers on different webpages/software, even some on manual labels. Nothing integrated with each other. The only thing that saved me was that 70 % of the stuff went to the same address.
I do Miss the British ALEC. Welcome home.

My second job after getting married was at a custom wood products company. "Stephen's Custom Wood" back in '88.
Within a couple months he and his plant manager were calling me "Jig Master".
Fast forward to '97, I worked at a semi production/ semi custom shop. And as the new guy I was tested. I built a sliding table saw jig to cut the corner off of side panels for parapets that we used for bank teller stations. The Forman ridiculed me for doing so.
After being on my own in 2004 I returned there for some CNC parts and wouldn't you know...the same Forman is clipping corners with "my" jig!
The secret to success is in the process. Be it rigging or jigging. 👍🏼

There is no apology needed Alec. It was a great episode and we love watching you bro. Just keep doing what you do. Tons of Love and respect from BC. Canada!!
Hey Alec! I don't know if you've ever heard of a degloving injury, but I doubt it, since you still wear you wedding band while you work. If not I would advise against googling it, and look up silicone wedding bands instead.
They aren't too expensive, and safe to wear while you operate machinery because they just snap if they get caught on something. You can save the gold one for date night.
Just a thought. Keep up the good work.
What a gorgeous lathe!!!
By the way this is my experience that when you put something in a place in just a minute this turns out to be the place that you need to be clear in order to put something there.
And man, did I enjoy to hear Mr. Steele use metric dimensions once again ;-)!!!
Fluorescent lights: back in the analogue days before automatic and custom white balance, the only way you could have them not turn green in film was to wrap the tubes in magenta sheets of gel. You don’t need very deep ones (so that it doesn’t mess with your eyes while working) but this way you are bringing the neons closer to the white balance of the LED panels. The camera will do the rest.
worked on one for these for years.
good machines.
You work incredibly hard, at everything you do Alec.
