So, mega damage, and a death toll in the millions likely, but not a world ender. With 8 he can take out some major cities, but won't destroy the planet as the energy release is more like the equivalent of all the nuke tests we did in the 50s (both US and USSR). What's more is while he will kill lots of people, most of the industry at this point is actually in space (orbit), where some of the rocks might be going, but he will not cripple earth's ability to strike back - things may very well end up worse for the Belt - which may be MARS' objective - get earth and the Belt fighting so Mars can clean up...maybe by putting a fleet inside the gate space?

Naomi's plan was so bad, she is too close to the situation to think clearly. She did exactly what a boy like Filip would resent, telling him what to do and giving him what he views as a handout. The last thing he wants is to be protected. She didn't even carry a gun or something... just asking to get jumped, hell she nearly got rolled by two junkies at the bar before she got saved.
I don't think her plan had any strategy to win him over; she couldn't turn away as a mother so she came in 100% as one. It was 100% not going to work but it's the only thing she could possibly do.
The rock they were talking about was 1-4 megatons "By comparison, the “Little Boy” atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II yielded roughly 15 kilotons TNT. The “Fat Man” bomb dropped on Nagasaki was about 20 kilotons TNT. The most powerful nuclear weapon ever tested, meanwhile, is said to be a Soviet hydrogen bomb that yielded 50,000 kilotons TNT." So in the case of the rocks were talking about Mega and not kilotons so much more powerful.
Also, the Luna scientist underestimated the size of the original rock. The opening shot of the season said Rock #9 would produce 21 megatons upon impact. Expect the other 8 rocks to be similarly sized.
Light spoilers on explosion sizes and how Marco Inaros made them more effective. Not to mention that the few megaton explosion estimate was based on size only and based on normal behaviour of stellar objects. Now add in artificial impact angle and artificial extra velocity; hundreds of megatons would be on the low side. When velocity goes up by 2x, the kinetic energy goes up by 4x.
50,000 kilotons (the Soviet "tsar bomba") is 50 megatons. So this 1-4 megaton rock at least isn't as big as that. Still absolutely massive, but this is no planet ender.
No, you mean 20 megatons, not kilotones (by the US). The Tsar bomb by the soviets was a yield of 50 megatons (which was half of what they originally wanted to use).
Only a series this good could produce nail biting cliffhangers every episode. It builds the tension. Builds the tension. Wait, is it gonna? Nope. Keeps on building. Incredible stuff.
The rocks are being targeted. If you look at the maps (North Pole is in the center) that Marco looks at, you can see the targeted site. This one was possibly the one that was aimed off the coast of Mauritania (West Africa).
Just for a little clarification on the nomenclature. A megaton the unit of measurement for an explosion equal to what 1 million tonnes of TNT would create. Just to show how serious an actual collision with a large mass that our atmosphere couldn't break apart would be, look at what happened back in 2013 in Russia. That was 17ish meters before our atmosphere had anything to say about it, thankfully the heat and resistance was enough to burn it down to a still hefty sized rock and save a lot of lives, thanks earth, but the shockwave from that explosion shattered windows in such a wide area and did damage to weak structures. That was only a shockwave from a small impact, one like the one in this episode would be horrendously damaging to all life in the area.
Don't forget that it takes 8 minutes for transmissions from the sun to get to us. so using that metric, you can imagine how relaying information around the solar system would work. Not to mention how humans handle information.
Is Amos going to survive this!? This show stresses me the hell out! I got a feeling it's going to be a heart breaking and very emotional reunion with our crew.....I'm not ready! Can't wait for the next one!
A megaton is equivalent to one million tons of TNT. A kiloton is equivalent to one thousand tons of TNT. Little Boy (the bomb used on Hiroshima) detonated with yield of about 15 kilotons, while Fat Man (the bomb used on Nagasaki) detonated with a yield of about 20 kilotons. So the asteroid hitting at its least destructive estimate (1 megaton) is about 50,000 times more destructive than the most powerful weapon used in wartime, or about 200,000 times more destructive at its upper estimate (4 megatons).
It wasn't like an explosion; it was a real explosion. That's what happens. Simplified: When the rock hits, it is a sudden stop and the kinetic energy is released in an explosion. It does not matter what angle the impact is; the explosions create a (virtually) symmetric crater. It is NOT like throwing a rock at sand, which pushes the sand out mostly in one direction. Search for "why are impact craters circular?" if you want more info.
The ability to accelerate the rocks and hit Earth means they also have the ability to target the rocks to some extent. The Earth is after all on rails, orbiting the sun and spinning at a known speed. If you can plan a trajectory that will hit Earth you can also find out which part of Earth you're going to hit. Then it's just a question of small adjustments if you want to hit a different part. They probably can't aim with perfect precision though, since they can't make adjustments to the course without leaving giant rocket engines strapped to the rocks, which would probably look suspicious.
I think Naomi thought that if she said anything bad about Marco or made excuses for what she did, it would drive Filip away. Maybe she should have tried harder to explain her side of things. But I doubt anything would have gotten through to him.
They're just relying on orbital mechanics to hit Earth. Aiming isn't really possible beyond just hoping that you did the math right when you launched the rock.
@@streaky81 Yes, by doing the math for the orbital mechanics. But that's not the same as saying "I'm going to aim this asteroid to land on London." From my understanding of what they were saying, the question was "are the rocks being aimed for where they'll cause the most damage? Or just to where they'll intersect with Earth's orbit?" And all Marco's people are doing is throwing a rock at a point where it'll meet the planet. Which is why I'm saying they didn't aim. They did math and hoped that they'd calculated the mechanics right.
@@shade419 Not just math, either. The math comes _after_ you decide on the factors which require math. And one early oversight can cost you a hundred miles.
@@shade419 I mean you can totally do that, but I agree that might not be what they're doing, depending on how good your rcs system is you could be super accurate with it too, plus or minus tens of miles - which would totally be enough. The earth does spin at a fixed rate and not _that_ fast. Hell, you can see they know exactly where the thing is going to hit - the same thing that tells them that could easily be used to cause it to hit where they want.
The mega-ton reference is important. That’s how nuclear explosions are measured. Remember, a rock like this, much bigger of course, ended the dinosaurs
There have been very subtle changes to the title sequence this season. In episode 1 you can see an asteroid passing Tycho Station. In episode 2 you see it passing Mars. In episode 3 you see it passing the Moon. The show's been giving us a countdown to the impact.
They know where the rocks are supposed to land because they did the math of orbital mechanics before releasing them from the ships. But they aren't guided after that

@@xLamont_ Or that's the whole point, the big heroes are thinking too high of themselves and making arrogant mistakes and we'll see what comes of those decisions down the line.
I'd have to re-watch it, but I believe the info on episode 1 said the rock had the force of about 21 megatons. The scientist is estimating damage with average asteroid speed but Marco may have sped them up on launch providing for more destruction on impact.
What I don't understand is how he was able to impart much additional speed when the simulation shows the rocks coming in from oblique angles. That means most of the impact force is coming from the earth ramming into the rocks rather than the other way around. To impart huge amounts of extra force you would need to have the rock traveling directly opposite to earths direction so they collided like two oncoming cars.
31:48 - our astronomers today understand enough about orbital physics to be able to predict the passage of nearby asteroids and comets, and when they can possibly land on, and that's just with our current technology. The Belters are a smart bunch and understand all this, so it's just a matter of proper calculations to make sure each rock hits the right spot on Earth.
Except it's not. Predicting the orbit of something and going out to land on it is far from the same thing as targeting a specific spot on Earth with an asteroid. Mapping the orbits of asteroids and comets is no different from the orbits of planets. They're just smaller and harder to see. Other than that, same exact thing. Hitting an exact spot on Earth on the other hand would be nearly impossible. There is no way to predict exactly how an asteroid will react to contact with the atmosphere. You can make an educated guess based on the angle of impact, but that's it. It also would be completely pointless. With that many large impacts, it would cause world-wide catastrophe no matter where they impact. It would be a waste of time to try to aim for a specific location.
@@davebcf1231 If you look closely at the end of Episode 1 Season 5, you can clearly see Marco had a very precise target in mind (NYC, if I'm not mistaken. I haven't read Nemesis Games yet). Again, this is sci-fi, and in the future, AI and better understanding of planetary physics to make this possible isn't something totally impossible, in my opinion.
@@thx500 "this is sci-fi," Exactly. Kinda my point. No, it's not possible in real life. In the show, sure. It's sci-fi. The tiniest difference on the surface of the asteroid could affect trajectory once it hits the atmosphere. You can calculate an area of impact, but not an exact spot. No amount of technology will make physics cease to exist. It also still wouldn't matter. Why would anyone waste the time running those calculations when that many impacts are going to cause worldwide devastation no matter where they hit? All you have to do is make sure they impact Earth.
"Its Like a bomb" Nikki & Steven React, in space, speed is king. You get an object moving fast enough, and you can vaporize planets....it'ts what happened to the the dinosaurs. And us with apparently.

This was the best episode of the season so far. And when it comes to Philip, he's obviously been brainwashed by Marco, but to me it would seem that he's too far gone.
For reference: 1 megaton is about 1, 000 kilotons. the Hiroshima blast in 1945 was about 15 kilotons. So 1-4 Megatons...yeah, we're talking big here. The most powerful nuclear warhead in the modern global arsenal today is the Tsar Bomba, which has created the most powerful man-made explosion ever recorded when it was detonated back in 1961 at 50 Megatons.
Y’all have grown so much since I first found y’all....y’all were just starting on GoT...Merry Christmas S&N! Abt to catch up on y’all Expanse reactions
I think they can target the rocks some what since one can project trajectory of each rocks and earth's rotation and orbit around the sun. But there is a not of variables. eg. the sun breaking up one of them in ep.1 From the map of the projection in ep1 and 2, the first rock is suppose to hit the ocean just west of Africa. (the earth is skewed a little bit from the usual world map and the North pole is kind of in the bottom right.)
The rocks Marco threw were city(/country?)-killers (10-40m), to have a planet killer 1 rock with a diameter of 5km would do. Also the rocks have a set striking position, while they can't steer them, the point of impact was determined the moment they were shot. You can see all the points of impact when Marco is reviewing the rock trajectories in his ship.
I think there are many factors such as size, speed, is it mostly made of iron and of course where it hits, the best place to hit is in the ocean, if it's close to a city it could wipe it out but it's not big enough for an extinction event.
they did the math before launch and that's why each asteroid is expected to hit specific target(nearly)as we saw, predicted time of impact and coordinates
Nuke larger nuke, that took out Nagasaki, was 21 kilotons (nice catch Pali). Current large nuclear weapons are 50 megatons. These are city killers but the initial blast is not the most dangerous part.
Having read the books, I couldn't wait for it. It did not disappoint! I'll probably watch it again and again and again, before the next episode comes out.
The admiral is about to finish the joke by telling us what the guy from Earth ordered at the bar...then the joke is interrupted by a guy from Earth walking into the bar and ordering a bourbon. So, basically the joke is that both Mars and the Belt order a drink from Earth because they want to learn something about their enemy, but Earth just orders a drink from Earth because it's self-obsessed and couldn't give two shits about Mars and the Belt. I saw someone post a version that would have ended with the Earther telling the bartender, "I'll have what they're having," and then proceed to reach over and steal the drinks from both the Martian and the Belter. That version is funnier but doesn't fit the scene as well.
Or the Earther orders an Earth drink because we are own worst enemies. Or the Earther orders what the other two are having, and asks the bartender to smash the bottle on his head to help him think like his enemy.
Trust me it gets better if it follows the book. Remember that rock that flew over Russia a few years ago and was filmed by a taxi driver. That blew out windows and people were injured and that rock didn't even land.
The 1-4 megatons was the impact of one of the pieces that broke up, not a complete asteroid - if you remember from the first episode it said on screen the asteroid those came from was a 24MT impact explosion - you'd need 24 million tons of TNT to create a comparable explosion, so yeah.. big. Asteroids create explosions like nuclear weapons, yes - it's a massive output of energy.
The scientist at the beginning of this episode was estimating the power of a natural asteroid at regular orbital speeds. But with the way that Marco accelerated the Rocks, they hit with WAY more power than a regular asteroid that size. F=m*a, so in order to make up for smaller mass, you can greatly accelerate it instead
If even 3 or 4 of those meteors hit Earth, it'll create an 'ELE.' Which stands for 'Extinction Level Event.' Just one rock coming in that big & fast, it's like a nuclear bomb. Btw, you were wondering about asteroids, etc. Asteroids are rocks orbiting the sun & occasionally head towards Earth. Meteors are rocks that enter our atmosphere. When Meteors hit the earth, the rocks that you'd find on the ground, those rocks are called Meteorites. 🤘😁
If you think about the Mars military guy from last episode and his speech. He seems to me like the type of guy that plays the long game especially when he is quoting a guy like Xerxes. Also if you think about his strategy on the ring gates Mars will now have free reign since Marcos and his crew are fighting earth. Now Mars can just wait and clean up whoever is left standing.
Prefacing my statement: I have never read the books. But I think they may have to use the proto-molecule to save the day at the end of the season. That's my prediction.
The first rock (30 meters) was not an accident. It skimmed the sun to break it up - like shotgun buckshot, because the observation ship was too small to target accurately. Asteroids hit like atomic bombs. At 4 Megatons, that's 300 times the size of Hiroshima. The other ones are much bigger. The one we saw was about the size of the ship launching it (150 meters). However, that is not just 5x larger, the volume and mass would be 125 times more. 500 Megatons. The largest human made bomb was 50 Megatons (tested... once...).
Please watch Kyle Hill's video on the subject of using asteroids as weapons... it is scary stuff, not least because it isn't unrealistic to think that we (humans) actually will be using them in the future...
Right on time, before next one... About steering asteroids, it's all the math... They sent them near sun and planets (so sun's or planet's gravity changes trajectory and accelerate the rock). Remember, they said Marco was slingshoter? So, he's good at it, for sure. For now, only this one from episode 1 was miscalculated (it came too close to sun, so it cracked, and by Venus broke apart) They calculated times for every rock and they know what side of Earth will face it. So, they know where it will hit (approximate probably). This first one, I think was in Atlantic Ocean near Africa (because of language on that sign). About Drummer, Michio Pa (that's her wife - all of them are some kind of family) was not using her vulnerability (if I got right what Nikki implied - maybe I am wrong). She spoke to her as her wife. Drummer has clearly some bond issues (because of her previous life), but is going to be better in it (trusting people that love her). If you are interested, there is Aftershow for every episode on Amazon Prime channel - with no spoilers - they are releasing them after every episode - with Wes Chatham (Amos) and Ty Franck (one of James S.A. Corey duo) and guests. So, check it if you like. Btw, man can see how are you into the show - Steven was even almost perfect with prediction for this episode... 😀 And again, it's so nice to have you reacting to The Expanse right after they drop episodes.
I agree the storyline with Naomi is going to be powerful however I believe it's going to be the most emotional for people who are parents, while people who have experienced more trauma in their life amos' story will be most emotional.
So they can't target the asteroid in the way that you might think of a heat seeking missile that moves towards it's target towards the end of it's flightpath, but you can do the math precisely enough and account for the earths rotation and time it to hit a particular spot. I don't think anyone bothered to worry about where impacts would occur. The damage from an asteroid itself going that fast isn't so much in the explosion upon impact, though the most visually impressive, it's the fact that it goes through the crust of the earth and it basically like setting off thousands of volcano's at once in terms of the amount of debris and shit it kicks up into the atmosphere. The real damage comes when sunlight can't get through for days months or years. Enjoy episode 4, about the watch it here now.
@@Jantzku Naomi hadn't thought this thing through in a number of ways. At first, for instance, I thought she was right in not bringing Holden along because he'd be among a bunch of Belters, even if he stayed on the ship. That was before I knew she'd bought the danged ship and was on it alone; that being the case, there was no reason for him not to have been there. Moreover, if she'd discussed her thoughts with Holden (or anyone, even Amos...especially Amos), they'd have told her that she wouldn't be able to buy off Filip with a ship and money. Naomi is smart with technical things, but she frequently lets her emotional impulses get the better of her...as we've seen more than once.
That Fred's aide seems like a planted mole. They intentionally made him unlikable, which suggests he's actually not the mole. I was thinking if the people going after the protomolecule are Marco's people or not. They haven't given out any information about their identity yet (I haven't read the books yet, btw, I just started to read book 3).
Have you never watched one of the many movies about rocks and asteroids hitting the Earth!? A space “rock” hitting our planet can be as small as a small fireball to a “extinction level event”. There are theories that the Earth was hit by an asteroid which caused the dinosaurs to go extinct. That first one that hit in this episode caused a huge disaster, lots of damage, tsunamis and dead people. Think of a nuclear bomb detonation and that’s what it is...probably minus the radiation. This is bad which is why Chrissie is so worried. With a whole bunch of them shot at Earth, it could end Earth.

We saw in episode 1 that rock #9 that split up into pieces was 21 megatons, so there are some really really big booms incoming

And that's at the speed of light
If everyone else on earth dies, Amos would pile their bodies to climb to the moon. Last man standing.

We are talking about the Expanse. They can spiral things out of control and go where no one could expect...
I'm just here to hear Nikki say "bitch!", and see Steven's shocked face...I wasn't disappointed. Lol
Aiming is entirely possible, that's how he aimed them to hit earth at the right time..

I was just looking for this on YT! Thanks!!
I'd have to re-watch it, but I believe the info on episode 1 said the rock had the force of about 21 megatons. The scientist is estimating damage with average asteroid speed but Marco may have sped them up on launch providing for more destruction on impact.
Avasarala did note that Marco had been a slingshot racer. Those rocks were on trajectories to hit a lot faster than a natural impactor.
@@thx500 "this is sci-fi,"
Exactly. All you have to do is make sure they impact Earth.
first explosion: 14º41'14.4''N 18º04'47.0''W; near to Dakar, Senegal.

Good Will Hunting: Robin Williams "And we get to choose who's part of our strange little worlds."
INCOMING ASTERIODS.
And what if Marko Inaros is believing that somebody is weak that may surprise him?
The rocks Marco threw were city(/country?)-killers (10-40m), to have a planet killer 1 rock with a diameter of 5km would do.
Also the rocks have a set striking position, while they can't steer them, the point of impact was determined the moment they were shot.
You can see all the points of impact when Marco is reviewing the rock trajectories in his ship.
I think there are many factors such as size, speed, is it mostly made of iron and of course where it hits, the best place to hit is in the ocean, if it's close to a city it could wipe it out but it's not big enough for an extinction event.
FYI: A megaton means an explosion equivalent to 1 megaton, or 1 million tons, of TNT. The hiroshima bomb was about 15 kilotons.

Very good.
This reminds me of the beginning of '24' season 6. Just having the unthinkable happen and knowing that there are more on the way.
Megaton is 1000 tons of DNA, a measure made by the inventor of Dynamite, Nobel as in Peace Prize. Yes, that's always been BS too.
Guagmala, if the ep says told you so, it's more than a rock. Did you not see the asteroids go around the ship, where they were inner system?

The largest human made bomb was 50 Megatons (tested... once...).

At first, for instance, I thought she was right in not bringing Holden along because he'd be among a bunch of Belters, even if he stayed on the ship.
