  • Today, Lawman Guitars is Presenting...
A very rare first year, 1977 Gibson RD Custom Guitar with the Moog Active Circuit, and it comes with a Brand New Gibson Deluxe Gig bag Case.
What a cool guitar! It's the second I have found and these are fantastic Gibson guitars.
I sold the last one last year and shipped it to Israel. My customer was thrilled with it...
I always hold my breath when buying one of these because the Active Moog Circuit are usually not working.
Everything works great with this one and the guitar action is setup with low easy playing action! Only superficial dings and such on this guitar. You can tell it was played a lot..check out the wear on the maple fret board...see pic 5 (on Reverb)...This guitar looks so cool!!
The Moog Circuit adds a boost circuit and what I think is a compressed circuit. The guitar has so many different voices. All original...
It looks great and sounds even better.
The pickups are fat and full. When you activate the Moog compression, this guitar is like on steroids.. Awesome powerful sound!! See pics (on Reverb).
The frets are in great shape. I think the previous owner kept them well crowned.
Just a ding here and there on the lovely blonde original finish. It has mellowed to that great butterscotch Gibson look that we all love.

That is the CUSTOM model. The Artist had ebony fingerboard, block inlay, gold hardware, active EQ, compressor on the neck pickup and expander on the bridge pickup, as well as the bright switch. The Custom, which you show, only has the bright switch and active EQ. The Standard model had rosewood fretboard and passive electronics.
The active EQ will both boost and cut, so when you think you are "opening up" the tone controls, you are actually boosting both treble and bass, hollowing out the midrange. Setting the tone controls at midpoint will give a more neutral tone.
The 25.5" scale has been used on certain jazz guitars made by Gibson. It was designed to be a solid body jazz guitar. And "RD" might stand for "research & development, but I am pretty sure it was "radical design."
I own an RD Artist, bought it new in 19779. And, yes, they ARE fabulous guitars. A bit heavy, but so well balanced that you don't notice the weight.

Excellent and totally correct *Rich Peterson* - I've just bought the same model as yours... Issued in 1980. I did wonder what the *Lawman* was on about and realised myself that he was mistaking the Artist, for the Custom models.
The original owner of my RD Artist, was the country singer - Curly Kimbler... *See my comment above*

I noticed this is mislabeled as I have what was sold to me in 1984 as an RD Artist Custom with an ebony fretboard and block inlays with the compressor and expander and the bright switch, so is mine an Artist Custom or an Artist or a Custom?

    • @richpeterson3080

@@AndrewAHayes There were three models. The Standard had conventional passive electronics, rosewood fretboard. The Custom had the Moog electronics and chrome hardware, plain headstock, maple fretboard. The Artist has gold hardware, Moog and a beautiful ornate headstock inlay, ebony fretboard. There was never a "Custom Artist."
Congratulations on owning one of the best designed Gibsons evedr.

@@richpeterson3080 So mine is an Artist as it says on the truss rod cover, I think the shop was either trying to "big up" the guitar by adding Custom to the name on the price ticket or were thinking along the lines of other Gibson Custom models that had the block inlays and headstock art, as sson as I plugged that guitar in at the shop I was wowed and I love the flying F hole on the headstock, when people have seen my RD in the past they were initially shocked that they have never heard of one nevermind seen one, one person asking if it was a real Gibson

    *Lawman Guitars*
I've just become a proud owner of a 1980 RD Artist (SB). I was around 20 when this guitar was issued, I still own the orignal Gibson/Norlin brochure for the entire range. I'd vowed that one day, I'd own one. And next week I will. :-)
You were not sure of the pickups used on the RD range. The Artist uses the GIbson Series VII Humbuckers, I'm not too sure whether that is across the rest of the range - The Standard and Custom.
BTW, as was pointed out by *Rich Peterson* below, the guitar here is a *Custom* model and *not* the *Artist.*
The Standard was just a basic two pup, Les Paul configuration. The Custom had an active preamp and the Artist used of course, the Moog 'Compander', an in-house designed compressor-expander circuit.
Finishes were - Standard: Natural Maple/Sunburst, rosewood fretboard, dot inlays, standard black LP style headstock, chrome pickups and hardware, gold transfer logo.
The Custom: As above but also available in black with natural maple fretboard.
The Artist: As above, but all had ebony fretboards with block MoP inlays, triple binding on the headstock, with a MoP centered 'Winged violin 'f'' ' motif and MoP logo. All Artists had gold-plated hardware and came equipped with TP6 fine-tune stop-tailpiece.
The Bass range, echoed this theme.
My instrument has only had two owners prior to me, the first of which was the country singer Curly Kimbler ....
    ua-cam.com/video/08OhzjUaxLg/v-deo.html
Other notable owners of the RD Artist, were John Williams and Jimmy Page, the former, used the guitar on his 'Sky' Productions and the latter played it live onstage at Zeppelin's last major festival gig - Knebworth 79 and of course, I was there...
    On *both* weekends!

Just got one with a MVX Victory neck. These are an extremely RARE find. When Gibson was moving the factory from Michigan to TN, they had some Victory necks and RD bodies laying around so they built a very limited number of RD's with MVX necks. It's kind of like a reverse Firebird headstock but with the tuning keys on the top of the headstock instead of the bottom. IMO I think the Victory necks look WAY better on the RD than standard open book headstocks.

i picked one up (1977 sunburst) in chicago in 1980 for 75 dollars at a guitar center. they were happy to be rid of it. I still have it and it is a great playing guitar, every bit a les paul and the long neck feel of a fender......the thing rocks

In fact, I've just bought a sunburst Artist, here in the UK, where they are quite rare. Mine cost around $2000 and that I consider cheap, given that it has only had two owners, the first of which was a fairly famous US country artist. The seller informed me that he had multiple offers from the US, but he was only prepared to sell to a UK buyer and for 'collection only'.
These Gibson innovative designs, once considered indifferently by the then fickle and fairly conservative guitar market, will only appreciate in value...
... Just look at what GIbson Flying V2's and Explorer 2's are now fetching. And I've got a rare Burns UK 'Flyte' fitted with V2 'Boomerang' Pickups as well.
I love quirky guitars, but the design of this instrument I fell in love with back then (I was a 20 year old, headbanger and owned a 72 Flying V, with Dirty Finger pups, that I added...). I vowed I'd get an RD Artist back then and now, 40 years later, I have one! :-D

Their popularity has grown progressively over time. The singer from Wang Chung used to play one back in the 80s and Krist Novelselic from Nirvana had thr bass model. So slowly, but surely it caught on.

I like to think that in 77 bob was trying to come up with something to stand out .
I have been told over the years thoe that the wood used for the guitars was not at the level
    Of there more desired models
Sg and others and decided to make another type guitar because of the wood . The comp was added I'm told to distract from its wood grain .
    I'm told .

Folks I can remember when these first came out. They sounded harsh and very loud. So be aware, this is why they were unpopular and failed to sell. I does not sound like Gibson.

Horses for courses.... I also remember when they came out and to me, they sounded great, at the time a breath of fresh air. And they do have the sound of GIbsons, *If* one knows how to use it!
And I now own an Artist (finally) and I love it! It is the perfect recording instrument.
