Weekend at the Cabin Installing Rainwater Storage with Gravity Fed Filtration - Will it Work?

  • I designed a rainwater collection system for my off grid cabin and really have no idea if it will even work. Rain is in the forecast this week so we will find out. Up until now, I have been hauling water from my home to the cabin.
    I’m not a plumber, so leave some tips, comments on how you think it will do or how to improve it. I’m sure it will need some tweaking.
    Next video will be a full review and commentary.
    A future video will also detail tapping a ground spring as part of my Off Grid Water series.

    Beautiful setup for the catchment. I would recommend always use black or colored hose for all applications. If you use clear it lets light in and then you will get algae growing in your hoses

      Thanks. I hope since it will be closed in under the cabin, very little light will get to it.

    Man good luck with that water system. Been my experience for 60 yrs that woods and trees is a tough combination when dealing with water. Great ideas that work but you’ll have to stay on top of it. It’s amazing the amount of dirt grime and clutter that comes off them trees not to mention birds all over everything. I grew up on a cistern they work great but we lived in the woods and was a lotta work. But if anyone can figure out a better solution you probably can!! Be BLESSED!!

    I have those same gutter leaf guards, and leaves still get stuck in them. Somehow or another, the leaf stem finds its way into the holes.

    Designing a rain collection system is a really smart way to get water when you're out in the middle of no whereville. Thumbs up! If you add solar polanels on the roof or some sort of wind turbines then you can get free electricity too. :) Or, perhaps, even, hydroelectroelectricity, just have to do some reseach. I noticed you hae a small creek / river, so maybe gydroelectric power might be a possibility too. :)

    Builder by trade, but did all the trades in the country. Use 2 50mm or 2 inches plastic scrappers or plasters. Use them to clean out the gutters, using metal ones on colour bond will scratch gutters and rust will set in.
    Guards help for awhile.

  • @lukekao8136

    RE: the gutters, if you create a metal grate to cover the opening, you probly won't have to go up there to clean the yuckies inside the gutters each time. I think, one time, I saw one on a tv ad, some company already made such a product, you'll just have to google it yourself if you don't want to DYI it. :)

    The tank on the left doesn't have any tubing connected to the outlet on the bottom, so it can't drain once its full like the one on the right. Should have put a "T" on the tubing going to the filters. and connected both.

    Sir, I use to collect rainwater in 55 Gal drums, my biggest issue was the valves freezing, I went to Tractor Supply and bought a water heater like went in a cattle trough to keep the water from freezing worked great for water at the garage

    Nice system. I use a similar filter system and it works well. I installed a simple inline flow meter to help judge when to change filters. As a previous commenter mentioned, clear hose does tend to promote growth in the line. I recently switched to Pex hose and fittings, as they are very resistant to freezing and splitting. Thanks for sharing.

    It might work even well if you were to mount the two half barrels to the bedroom wall up high... That way you could have actually some pressure inside the cabin. If you want to drink the rainwater you could then use a berkey type setup and use the rest of the water unfiltered for say showering, cleaning, laundry and the like...
    I doubt if the three blue filters work by that little a pressure / head...
    For the setup you build now I would recommend installing a pitcher hand pump in the kitchen and plumb it to either of the plastic half barrels and use a berkey style setup for the drinking water filtration...

      @@TheOffGridExperience I love for it to work...
      I think a pitcher pump on the inside plumbed into the barrels would be your best option to get water in the cabin...
      BTW: Is a shallow well out of the question on your land ??

    You need to have a flow pipe lower on the barrels for flow otherwise one will fill but not be part of the system and create stagnant water, or put your feed to the filter from the other barrel to make it all part of the one system

      @TheOffGridExperience  Місяць тому +1

    Interesting set up, would be great to see how it works when it’s got rain water in it. Will there be enough water if there is a drought? Also what are the details of the filter system you used? Does it filter bacteria and other contaminants out which can harm you or do you have to boil the water too?

    • @TheOffGridExperience
      @TheOffGridExperience  Місяць тому

      I'm hoping I get enough rain this week to find out. Any water I drink will go thru my Berkey. The 3 stage (assuming it works) plus the Berkey should be more than fine.

    We use those clear hoses for our washer fluid dispensers at work. Junk. Can't go around any corners . Can't have any weight in them or they kink. It's better to use a reinforced hose. I had to wrap it in heater hose with zap straps just to stop it from kinking when it comes out of the holding tank. It is much worse when it gets warmer. Just a thought. Love your cabin.

    12:37 Not quite understanding why you ran the guttering *back toward* an interior corner with the filtered catch adjacent to another section of house.
    Why not drop the gutter down at farthest outside corner and keep splash away from the house?

    With the creek on your property couldn’t you pump the creek water up to the cabin and filter the water before going into your holding tanks? You could use a “ram pump” to move water with no electrcity.

    I just get my Drinking Water from the Good Neighbors on my road. Get my Bathing and everything else water from roof into standard garbage bins from Walfart.. I mean Walmart. been doing it 14yrs. But I am at the point I can state saving up the Almost $10,000 to have a Well Drilled.
    I could just put a Shallow Well in but No One wants to help me get the pipe in the ground and have no water source large enough for Wet Drilling that would make it easier. And since I have a Bad back that I almost broke a few years back.. It's a Pain in the Back and Ass trying to do it myself. Even tho I Hit Water after just a Foot of Digging. And Well Drillers will Not do Shallow Wells. The ones around here anyway..
    I did Start but it got Stuck and Can Not Pull it back out to try again.
