  • You could go your entire whisky-vlogging life and never have a cut edit then, one day, your lights will do something very out of the ordinary and you just have to cut it out. It's not how I like to do things but...that's life I guess.
Anyway...whisky! Speyside rears its head again with Tamdhu 12yr old. With the exception of the, quite brilliant Batch Strength releases...Tamdhu are a distillery I rarely hear mentioned. Far be it from me to suggest why. I'm just here to give my thoughts on the stuff in the bottle ;)
    Enjoy.

Nice job mate - and welcome to February! Another distillery I haven't really delved into yet. Cheers Jim.

Another fine review Jim. Great dram of which we need a new bottle, loved the 10yo too. Picked up a couple of bottles of the aberlour 10yo Xmas 2020 from Asda for £11 each ... bargain of the century lol, if only they’d had more!

I got this bottle and I'm having a hard time not drinking it all the time. lol. It's lovely. Easily among my favorite sherried 12 year olds along with GlenDronach 12, Macallan 12 Sherry Oak, GlenAllachie 12 and Bunnahabhain 12. The finish on this is much longer than it has any right to be at those 43%. This is good scotch.

This is one of those where "I came for the bottle but stayed for the whisky". Crackin' dram.

Another solid review, Jim! Totally agree on the Aberlour 10, shame it's gone. Need to pick up a bottle of Tamdhu 12 again sometime soon!

Cheers. Seems the Aberlour 10 is a popular choice. Just realised when I was editing this video that I'd never reviewed it. Seems a bit futile now considering it's no longer available but hey....ya never know.

Great review as usual, Jim. Thanks.
On the whisky: it's decent, but I would suggest to step up 3 years and take the Tamdhu 15yo. (or enter the world of CS and grab the by you mentioned Tamdhu batch strength). But that is a significant leap up.
The Aberlour 10yo? Great alternative, but indeed: if you can find it.
    Slàinte mhath

Cheers Frank. I must admit that, outside of this 12 and the Batch Strength...I don't remember ever trying another Tamdhu. I imagine it's the sort of thing I'd leave to try in a bar. Nice stuff but (once again aside from that Batch Strength) I wouldn't be dying about it.
      Slàinte buddy.

Hi Jim, never had a tamdhu, still if I’ve never that the whiskies that you reviewI I still enjoy your reviews and hearing your options, slàinte mhath Jim 👍

So many whiskys David. For all the reviewing I've done...I feel like I've barely scatched the surface. Indeed...before this series is over...I'll be trying a couple of distilleries that I've never had. And every time I feel like I'm catching up...two new distilleries open 😄. Still...it's not the worst complaint I suppose.
      Cheers buddy.

Only Tamdhu distillery bottling I have had was batch 3 of the CS many years ago. Great stuff and yes a very nice bottle. Two years ago was able to get a independent 19 year CS bottle from a refill bourbon hogshead. Really interesting to get a distillery that is known for sherry in a quiet old non sherry cask. The spirit character is beautiful with a lot going on. At the same time also got a Glengoyne 21 with the same presentation. With that one more Glengoyne was easy to pick out. As these are sister distilleries was glad to get them with there sherry clothes off. Cheers Jim

Cheers Tim. They sound really interesting. Called into Aberlour last Summer when I was in Scotland but didn't have time to take the tour. Hoping to go back either this year or next to put that right. Would like to get a better feel for both distilleries.

Another reviewer described this Tamdhu 12 y o whisky as 'elegant'. Would you agree with that?
As per one source, 'Tamdhu' means 'little dark hill' in Gaelic.

Tried and liked both the old 10 and the 12 (nice balance between light and rich notes imo, as you pointed out) but don't think I ever had a bottle of the Tamdhu 12. Great notes and review Jim, this seems like one to pay some further attention to. Cheers!

Cheers Menno. It's no barn-stormer by any means but, I certainly would recommend trying it. One for a bar perhaps?!

Tottally agree on the Aberlour 10, regret not finding some before it disappeared

Cheers John. Although only 40% ABV, chill-filtered and with colour added...I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for that 10. It was my first sherried whisky if memory serves.

Haven't had this, only the old 10 a few years ago which was decent for the price as well (think it was about 30 quid in tescos if I remember right). Good review as ever mate.

Cheers Matthew. Never got the chance to try that 10 but, from what I've heard...decent seems to sum it up well.

I enjoy Tamdhu, better than many releases coming my way and priced well. Sadly the Aberlour 10 is still here but more than this 12?! Thanks for your thoughts. Cheers!

@@WhiskeyNovice I have heard the same, not sure where you can get them now though. The 14 year old is also very good.

Never had any Tamdhu so far. And given the current state of affairs on the market will not buy any for the forseeable future. I have no doubt that whisky is sound but its price in Bulgaria is quite steep for its presentation. 43-44 euros for a whisky that has been semi-neutered by watering down to 43% ABV and chill-filtration is a rip off IMHO. I'm not willing to pay that kind of money for anything less than say Bunnahabhain 12. In general, products of Tamdhu and its sister distillery Glengoyne are fairly overpriced in Bulgaria for what they are, at least presentation wise. Tamdhu 15 for example is priced at around 90 euros which is roughly twice the price I have to pay for Glenallachie 15 or Glenallachie 10 CS. In order to even start me considering a purchase Tamdhu 12 has to be priced at 35 euros max. This is the money I have to pay for Glendronach 12 and I can still easily pick bottles with the old "non chill filtered" on the tube. Or better yet bump the ABV to 46% and stop chill filtering the juice. They can also replace the half a kilo lump of glass "art deco" bottle if that will help them to keep the price in check.
This post came as one hell of a rant but...hey...
BTW, at the current price of Tamdhu 12 I can purchase Aberlour 12 48% ABV expression.
    Cheers!

Cheers man. I actually just ordered the Aberlour 12 NCF. It's a great price at the moment. Really looking forward to trying it.
