He could BARELY perform the material live. I remember seeing them and he was complaining that he was sick, which was apparently commonplace on the first few tours.
Still don't understand how people can say he's a bad vocalist. Yeah, it's not perfect. I've seen very few perfect vocal performances. Considering how difficult these parts are to sing, I'm very impressed with how well he does them live, while switching back and forth between singing and screaming.
@Architect4293 Vocals are always enhanced on studio recordings. On a live situation vocals are raw. But what people are probably refering to is the back vocals on the album, there are a few choruses when Spencer sings that, for those who don't know how an album is procuded, probably associate it with effects or audio enhancement which clearly is not the case. Also, this kind of vocals are not recorded in sequence, they're recorded in takes. You can clearly hear vocals overlaping.
Matt always seems to be way into playing. Everyone else seems to be focused on playing the right shit, so they're looking down at their fretting hands. Great live performers for sure.
@amaranthinagony They actually record the harmonies beforehand and play it along with all the other little sequencing stuff and follow along in their ear monitors or possibly just Matt. Alex is the only one at the moment that harmonizes and does backup vocals because he has the "easiest" part among the other guitarists.
@MCLOVIN50 Backing tracks going straight to the speakers. I think they have these for every song, they have the harmonies, the occasional keyboards and the effects and stuff they use sometimes. Spencer can probably hear it in his earphone.
@waynesworld91 I know haha, they are playing to tracks the whole time that play the synth stuff and keep them perfectly in time. I have seen them three times and never heard the harmonies when I saw them so I was sort of startled by them lol.
They were definitely pretty rough at these shows but they had JUST released the album and were still fairly new with that line-up and songs so it seems fitting that their performances weren't the best. But being prolific and playing and writing has made them much much improved live performers since this video 2 years ago.
@hugovmonteiro I understand. Thank you for clearing that issue up. I just felt the need to present my opinion because Spencer is an extremely talented vocalist. One of the best in the progressive metal genre. It piques me off when talentless assholes say he "sucks," ya know?
@MrVentrikel haha well as a person who was introduced to djent through Veil of Maya and Meshuggah I do like the screaming. I like clean vocals too, if they are on key lol, don't get me wrong I still listen to Periphery though, just the album and instrumental stuff.
Haha for sure. It's not like some Of Mice & Men shit where they can just jump around while playing (no offense to them), but they have much more complex riffs and more interesting sounds that they have to nail.
im sorry, i was referencing 7 into 9 as the polymeter not the time signature... which is what i thought he was talking about. but i realize that just saying 7/9 sounds stupid. yes i know 7/9 isn't a time signature.
Ok, people should also consider that, when playing lower in the line up, as Periphery typically does, the sound guys don't typically give a shit about you. As a guitar player, I've played many shows where i've had to assume things sounded right because I couldn't hear myself through my monitors. However, with a guitar, the same fret on the same string should make the same sound. Singing is a different story, and not being able to hear yourself will make it quite difficult to sing well.
Well James Brown had two drummers, and people called him crazy, until he proved that it was all possible and could work. So hey, why not three guitarists?
I'm so glad the cameraman made sure we wouldn't miss a second of the technical difficulties. He was even so nice as to zoom in on them a bit.
Hawkins2220 now they're nominated a Grammy
Spencer's vox have gotten so much better since this performance
hi Joey
Caleb Hollingsworth hey
He could BARELY perform the material live. I remember seeing them and he was complaining that he was sick, which was apparently commonplace on the first few tours.
The amount of ghost notes Halpern hits in one song is equal to the amount of times I came watching this.
That's a lot.
Still don't understand how people can say he's a bad vocalist. Yeah, it's not perfect. I've seen very few perfect vocal performances. Considering how difficult these parts are to sing, I'm very impressed with how well he does them live, while switching back and forth between singing and screaming.
Absolutely
Lmao watching Misha groove, makes me happy.
it's hard not to groove on one of the best song they've created.
It's an oldie but a goodie
I love the guitarist who's all just chill while the othe two are completely rocking it. :P
Can't wait to see these guys in feburary.
Thanks for continuing to upload the only high quality live videos of Periphery around :D
1:44 HOLY SHIT awesome add-on to the vocals!
Such a pleasure to see a drummer playing with his soul, every note is unique!!!!
@Architect4293 Vocals are always enhanced on studio recordings. On a live situation vocals are raw. His vocals are GREAT live!!!
this is just impossible to achieve live, i don't know what's going on with this guys
Spencers singing reflects the beauty of the guitar riffs
He's gotten much, much better since this, watch any video's of them playing this year
Probably The Best Hook I've Heard In My Life:DDD
My favorite song by them
I had no idea this band were so good live... They suprised me big time!
I think we can all agree that Spencer has one of most coolest shirts of all time.
oh man what an epic ass show!
favorite periphery song
they are the 1st band Ive seen with 3 guitarist
Axe-Fx FTW! Tapping part came out extremely clean.
Matt always seems to be way into playing. Everyone else seems to be focused on playing the right shit, so they're looking down at their fretting hands. Great live performers for sure.
This version is so much more emotional than the album version
hearing harmonies on the vocals live is pretty sick
Yes.
@amaranthinagony They actually record the harmonies beforehand and play it along with all the other little sequencing stuff and follow along in their ear monitors or possibly just Matt. Alex is the only one at the moment that harmonizes and does backup vocals because he has the "easiest" part among the other guitarists.
Bulb is awesome!
I want to learn this song on guitar it would be so badass to play
@MCLOVIN50 Backing tracks going straight to the speakers. I think they have these for every song, they have the harmonies, the occasional keyboards and the effects and stuff they use sometimes. Spencer can probably hear it in his earphone.
@waynesworld91 I know haha, they are playing to tracks the whole time that play the synth stuff and keep them perfectly in time. I have seen them three times and never heard the harmonies when I saw them so I was sort of startled by them lol.
So they're also absolutely awesome live? Faith in humanity has been restored.
Looking for ward to the glasgow show :)
Im curious to know what the backing track consists of during the show
Spencer bombed the vocals at 59 sec
They were definitely pretty rough at these shows but they had JUST released the album and were still fairly new with that line-up and songs so it seems fitting that their performances weren't the best. But being prolific and playing and writing has made them much much improved live performers since this video 2 years ago.
listen to him lately man, spencers gotten a lot better.
I
2:26 Misha gives mad props to one of his fans XD
Lol wtf this is so crazy like such a disaster but still so good like wtf
spencer sounds amazing here
@hugovmonteiro I understand. Thank you for clearing that issue up. I just felt the need to present my opinion because Spencer is an extremely talented vocalist. One of the best in the progressive metal genre. It piques me off when talentless assholes say he "sucks," ya know?
@TheBigAP13 it is more likely a phasing issue as a result of a mono mix.
Listen to the studio recording. It's a lot clearer. But when you know the song you're listening to, you'll see that this vid is really fucking good.
and suddenly, vocal harmonies out of fucking no where!
Spencer Sotelo has AMAZING vocals
Ah ok, just making sure. Yeah I only saw your comment and I was like uhhhhh
Don't get me wrong though, I love me some Periphery :D
Whats up with the hidden drummer on right side of the stage?
the vocals were not loud enough that night, amazing show but i was trying to tell spencer to turn up the volume on vocals
Didn't Misha say that they use a backing track live for Spencer and the guitars? I think that's why everyone is so confused.
Dat eazy muthaphukkin e shirt
Return to the sands, through forever. WE CYCLE AGAINNNNNNNN.
@MrVentrikel haha well as a person who was introduced to djent through Veil of Maya and Meshuggah I do like the screaming. I like clean vocals too, if they are on key lol, don't get me wrong I still listen to Periphery though, just the album and instrumental stuff.
Wish I got to meet Alex Bois
@JaCkAsTeRaZ I do believe this to be his first big time gig so he's obviously learning, then again every musician is always learning, but still..
Halpern is fucken BLAAAAAZING! genius
where do they get their song names from????
Alex is beast
very necessary. if you listen to interviews with misha being asked that question you will then understand why exactly
@ScottRichardStoller yeah exactly but every live song ive seen them play misha is always standing in front of tom
@BlurredVisi0n His vocal have improved ALOT now
now he realy good live aswell
@djbrosht If your into bass check out Evan Brewer, he just joined the Faceless but he also released a solo bass album title Alone
goddamn they're good
@Babylonthegreat yeah, i'm in agreement. thats pretty much what i was saying.
Miss alex
ok its been asked but why did Alex leave?
@eclipseml That's not bulb fool, that's Jake.
cant get an audio from the board mix? FAIL
they originally had only 2 & only got 3 when Adrian Smith re joined the band in 99 & they didnt wanna fire Janick Gers so they kept it a 3 piece
how old were you in 1987
Epic screaming is epic
you said that in the other video
3 wide receivers? Necessary?
I like how Spencer is wearing an Eazy-E shirt.
@ghandrbluver is he? i'll watch some newer stuff, he wasn't when i posted this : P
does anyone else realize that final high note is a fucking E-flat. Spencer = God.
Holy shit Misha and I use the same guitar strap lol
wheres nolly?
this was filmed in 2010, Nolly joined in 2012.
Marck wasn0t here either.
@m4ssee how?
I get a sore throat when I hear that growl. Apart from that great playing.
Haha for sure. It's not like some Of Mice & Men shit where they can just jump around while playing (no offense to them), but they have much more complex riffs and more interesting sounds that they have to nail.
something goes wrong every live video of periphery i've seen lol
1:44 where is that vocal harmony coming from?? :O
Spencers ghost
@BlurredVisi0n dude he's amazing now
im sorry, i was referencing 7 into 9 as the polymeter not the time signature... which is what i thought he was talking about. but i realize that just saying 7/9 sounds stupid. yes i know 7/9 isn't a time signature.
hahahah lol at the bassist at 1:22
Djesus. Dat tapping part.
the drummer is sick :-O
Spencer's gotten a lot better since 2010. Go listen to his drunk rendition of 'Since You've Been Gone,' even shitfaced, he nails it.
3 guitars? neccesary?
I Was just saying that because of misha's Face when he plays :)
Why does he sing the harmony in the chorus?
Halpern @ 3:30
fuck yes :D
Ok, people should also consider that, when playing lower in the line up, as Periphery typically does, the sound guys don't typically give a shit about you. As a guitar player, I've played many shows where i've had to assume things sounded right because I couldn't hear myself through my monitors.
However, with a guitar, the same fret on the same string should make the same sound. Singing is a different story, and not being able to hear yourself will make it quite difficult to sing well.
Matt Halpern, all that needs to be said
@HeavyMetalVagabond
0:52 -->
He seems to have some problems with his pedalboard.
bass rules xD
Sure. 2 guitars in harmony for lead, and a rythm. foo fighters as well has 3 guitars. and countless other bands.
@BlurredVisi0n he is singing to loud with to much pressure here i think, not easy to hold a clear note like that
Well James Brown had two drummers, and people called him crazy, until he proved that it was all possible and could work. So hey, why not three guitarists?
