I know I'm reviving a dead post, but yes and no. It depends on the person as everyone has their own interests, but their instruments cover up too much of some of the parts that stood out, parts that helped define the song. Periphery is an amazing group, but yeah.
I hate when people say this cover sucks, because its not the same as the original. This is a perfect example of a great cover. The drums are the best part of this as they give the song a completely different feel that the song needed. Don't get me wrong here, its not Metallica and they never will be, but this is an amazing song while making it their own. I believe at 5:17, when the double kick is ripping, that Lars should have realized that it would have made the song better
Nah the drums are terrible. If Matt did the drums they could've been so much better but Misha went way too far arranging the drums on this Also, the drums are machine performed and I absolutely hate drums performed by a machine (not drum samples. Who cares Lars is a fantastic musician, he has co-written some of metallicas best songs and he is the best drummer for metallica. He may not be the most technically proficient, but he fits into metallica like a master key in a lock. Metallica also only achieved success due to Lars' vision for the band.
He and Hetfield co arranged almost all the songs. Just listen to Dyers Eve. His drumming on that is mad. But now he sucks and he's too lazy and he's an asshole though. But you can't not agree to the fact that he and James are legends
The cover picture annoys me. The blindfold is not perpendicular to this guy's face, but the star is. That means that the star is printed off-kilter relative to the blindfold. My OCD is going wild :(
Not necessarily. Fabric folds in odd ways and theres nothing to say he didn't tie it perpendicular only to have some folds poke out at odd angles. Good spot though lol
Metallica will always be my favorite band, but for me, this is the best cover of one of their songs ever. Period. The way Matt runs with the double bass the whole end of the song is just pure metal and makes me wanna break my neck headbanging every time I listen to it. If I had this on a cd, this song would wear out or I'd blow the speakers out from repeated playing and replaying.
Everyone bashes Lars. Why? Maybe he isn't the most technical drummer out there, but he plays with heart and he writes music with passion. There's a reason he's part of one of the biggest bands on the planet, and honestly... I'll listen to him play all day long because I know he would deliver. All you haters can suck it, seriously.
From a classic/old-school metalhead's standpoint that's trying to explore what the modern/industrial/djent genres has to offer, I have this to say about the cover: The vocals, although very well done and great for their thing, just doesn't cut the harsh and brutal nature of the original song and instead tries to make it pretty, which really took away the lyrical impact for me. He's a great singer, just not for traditional thrash metal. The drums sounds like the drummer has something up his behind to be quite frank. He hits every drum as hard as he can with ZERO dynamics through the entire song which kills the buttery smooth clean-parts and the tranquil melancholy of the verses is pounded away even though it's tight. It's simply unlively and flat. That's really what negative I can say. It's Periphery, not Metallica, and they did it their own way. Misha's solo honestly destroyed Kirk's original (let's be honest, he's never really been a great player other than a speed-freak and wah-fanatic). And I will always enjoy great musicianship no matter the genre, and that clearly comes through here both per the individuals and as a group. I see many comments discussing whether or not this is emo. I wouldn't call it emo, but as a fan of old-school metal ("true metal" as some call it), the sound doesn't work for me the same way much of emo & screamo-acts doesn't work for me, I suppose that's what people from my group are complaining about. I think that's the LEAST elitist i can be. Great musicians from a genre that to me is alien and "controversial" I guess, and a good cover. That's still just my opinion. And yes, I know no one read the whole thing. Waffledicks.
+TheRolfieboy took me a while to get over the vocals personally as i mainly like thras and death metal but now i find periphery really enjoyable. the vocals really carry the melody with this style while the guitars are often very rhythm based. try 'icarus lives', 'alpha', 'scarlet', 'buttersnips'. Pretty catchy melodies. i don't listen to any other band with these hardcore style vocals personally so i get where you're coming from
As a Metallica fan but not a periphery or djent fan, I can see why some don't like it. The Metallica fansboys are mad because they like the Metallica sound and feel like this isn't justice to what they were used to hearing from One. The djent guys like it because they probably aren't Metallica fans and feel like this version suits them better. But people shouldn't get mad at differences like that. If you want the Metallica sound for One, go listen to that version. And for those who like this version... Obviously listen to this. Ignorant people get mad that's all.
I can't believe the people on this fucking thread. There's one side bashing Metallica, and one side bashing Periphery... So narrow-minded. You know what? Metallica is my favorite musical artist (tied with Linkin Park and Muse)... They have talent and their music changes over time... "...And Justice For All" (1988) was musically complex and was very progressive at the time. And it is definitely my favorite album by them... And then here's Periphery, a progressive metal band that is easily within my top five... And they do a bad ass cover of a song on my favorite album by my favorite artist... Making it their own song in the process. What's there not to like? And what better way to pay tribute to a song progressive for its time by doing it your way? I like both equally. I basically view them as two different songs. That's all I can do in order to avoid being sacrilegious to one band or unacknowledging of the other's talent lol... Appreciate both versions for what they are; they're both superb in their own way. We don't need to be at each other's throats on this thread... On a personal note, this is definitely my favorite Metallica cover and probably my favorite cover song in general.
Great explanation. I personally am not a very big fan of Metallica save for their hits but I can definitely appreciate that approach. Moreover, why are they listening to it if they don't like it :D
its a cover, its not meant to sound like the original, its just their take on it. no song has been ruined, as if you dont like iit you can just listen to the original
zac chinevere haha okey then maybe youwant some new tampons so you dont bleed all over the keybord.. Lars was good but in MY opinion.. Matt made them better becouse its fucking new.. stop you crying
This was very well done. Drum track was fantastic. Vocals got a little whiny in the choruses, but other than that, I like how he made Hetfield's lyrics his own.
I felt the drumming to be the most jarring. The first half of the song is over drumming, and then the second half is sort of following Lars’ original drumming, but with an extra basic double bass beat
Appreciate all the stylistic differences compared to the original. It’s incredible how different this song is with the vocals change. Hetfield has such a more powerful and lower pitched voice.
Mot Yrrah HAHAAAAAAA! Justin Bieber is and will always be a GREAT musician! How many records have you sold? Plus, you don't know a lot about drums, right? Playing only with power and messing up the easiest 4/4 beats doesn't qualify you as a good drummer.
Mot Yrrah It's not about PLAYING only simple beats, it's about SCREWING THEM UP! Guess what Phil Rudd does? He only plays simple beats, but he NEVER screws them up. C'mon, it's not that difficult to play a 4/4 fill and ending on the 1. Yet Lars Ulrich screws that up. "NO feel NO emotion"? I assume you've never heard Lune? This song contains one of THE MOST emotional drum parts in the world. And "No swing"? Lars can't swing for shit. Matt Halpern on the other hand can probably play anything you can imagine. And offending this band only makes you look dumb, just like saying that Lars Ulrich is a GREAT drummer, because he isn't. Every drummer will tell you that. Do you think offending people on the internet will make you successful? Do you think Elon Musk is sits in front of his computer calling people fuckwads all day long? Think about it.
I am a huge Metallica fan, they pretty much baptized my infatuated with metal music. I think this is a pretty good cover to be honest, I think the mix is a little crap, but I dig it a lot. I love the drumming, definitely a little different than Lars.
I'm not ripping on Matt at all. He's a hundred times the drummer I'll ever be. If I don't like something that I hear I'm not gonna shelve that opinion because someone is more "successful" than me. Do you like Nickelback because they're more successful than you? Probably not. Success doesn't make someone infallible. Quit starting shit on the internet though, dude. There's no point. Hope you have a nice day too!
11 years ago when they were still finding their sound, but even back then the instrumentals were awesome. I’d love them to re-record the vocals and re-mix the rest - their production quality and Spencer’s individual vocal skills have improved astronomically since then, they could make the ultimate One cover with their current form!
Juan Ayestas Hard to judge the mix when the audio is heavily compressed for a 240p youtube video. You lose a significant amount of clarity in the high end when that happens.
James Hettfield is not know for his singing skill. This young dude is obviously able to hit those higher notes better, but James is a fucking Thrash Metal Icon. He is legendary for his badass rifts and his unique singing. I wouldn't compare them. Like, at all. This sounds like a really well made cover. But I'm a hardcore Metalhed baybehhh, so James all the way. It gets badass after the Lars drum part. Badabadabadum.....badabadabadum...lmao
I love this version, it reminds me of Metallica's S&M version. But there's some serious overdrumming going on. The guitars and vocals are definitely on point.

He may not be the most technically proficient, but he fits into metallica like a master key in a lock. Metallica also only achieved success due to Lars' vision for the band.
"Musician"
Oh really? I thought he played pots and pans on Saint Anger?
He and Hetfield co arranged almost all the songs. Just listen to Dyers Eve. His drumming on that is mad. But now he sucks and he's too lazy and he's an asshole though. But you can't not agree to the fact that he and James are legends
lars literally backtracks double bass for live shows
0:54 This moment got me immersed to the music. I knew it would turn out a great cover.
I like this... the drums really kick it up a lot!!!
Jody Hicks. Or the bandana is longer and folded under improperly. Getting a bandana to fold right is a pain, but I understand the O.C.D. friend.
Being organized =/= OCD
Isn’t it from a video game🤔
It's from the cover of a brilliant video game called Homefront
Periphery fans and Metallica fans squabbling, brilliant.
I liked it. Very well brought to their own style, buy I still prefer the original

the ori and this version are really awesome!
You clearly do not appreciate real metal, and this is coming from a periphery fan
Riley Morgan or she prefers this.
Riley Morgan
well said :I
lol No.
The only time I ever and I truly mean EVER enjoy Metallica! That just shows how epic Periphery truly Is!!!!
this album was the best thing to come out of the homefront series
I believe in Periphery. They got this.
4:19 i started headbanging
Why this Master piece isn't on spotify?
Holy shit didn't expect this to be as good as it is props bro you took a classic & made a worthy remake
This song was in Homefront? I don't remember ever hearing it in the game. Then again, it's been a while since I last played it.
No matter how amazing this cover is it will never capture that same feeling of sadness and anger as the original
From a classic/old-school metalhead's standpoint that's trying to explore what the modern/industrial/djent genres has to offer, I have this to say about the cover:
The vocals, although very well done and great for their thing, just doesn't cut the harsh and brutal nature of the original song and instead tries to make it pretty, which really took away the lyrical impact for me.
+TheRolfieboy Metallica is not thrash metal..
Pretty catchy melodies. i don't listen to any other band with these hardcore style vocals personally so i get where you're coming from
***** Vocals typically used in the hardcore genre.
***** i could be misusing the term though since i dont listen to it at all
dude. you sound like an expert.
Stopped reading after linkin fuck
Oh, Hybrid Theory is my favorite album ever. But I love all of LP's stuff.
3m7c , you're just horribly narrow-minded.
It's just a band playing one of their favorite songs who is anyone to tell them they can't play some Metallica?
The day I heard this song done by Periphery was the day this song got even better than it already was. Thanks guys, brilliant cover!
its a cover, its not meant to sound like the original, its just their take on it. no song has been ruined, as if you dont like iit you can just listen to the original
Matt Halpern just made the drums more kick ass
They are nice, but in this song, the original is much better...
I'm a huge fan of both of them but i have to say that i prefer lars' version because the ending is a lot more complicated.
zac chinevere haha okey then maybe youwant some new tampons so you dont bleed all over the keybord.. Lars was good but in MY opinion.. Matt made them better becouse its fucking new.. stop you crying
This was very well done. Drum track was fantastic. Vocals got a little whiny in the choruses, but other than that, I like how he made Hetfield's lyrics his own.
That constant double bass all the way through the second half of the instrumental part really blew me away!!!
This song is weird. Sometimes I feel it really deeply and sometimes it sounds bad.
I really don't know what's going on here.
You're doing it right, just relax
I feel the same but mostly cause the two bands sound entirely different, still a good effort no lies there
I felt the drumming to be the most jarring. The first half of the song is over drumming, and then the second half is sort of following Lars’ original drumming, but with an extra basic double bass beat
drummer is playing in an odd time signature different from the original to give it a periphery vibe....that's why it sounds off to you
@@albie21121 yep
I love how people are saying his voice is gay and sucks but don't listen to his vocal range.
Spencer is an amazing vocalist but his style doesn't suit this song at all
***** It suits their version of the song though, and that is literally all that matters.
More Ghost Notes...
Simply amazing, Periphery have the "Gold touch"!
Would love to heart this with James vocals on the Justice Record.
like.. the original one?
where is the djent
You mean "da-jent" haha?
djunt
blunt?
michaelgtho djeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeent
UncleR4y quack?
Lol in the solo he was like fuck it moar shred!
lmfao this is really good.. the whole way through i was like "oh god how'r they gunna do this part" at times i was like "eh" others i was like "woah"
I think this is pre Halpern sure. I think Halpern would have did it different
+MaximumHamburgers either that or he was playing on a Roland TD 20 with real cymbals.
+MaximumHamburgers You have already broke my heart jajaja 😩 I didnt know these drums where programmed.
This was with Halpern. Halpern has been in the band longer than Spencer, so this would have to be with Halpern.
I know this was old, but Travis Orbin was better than Matt Halpern and I wish he had never left Periphery.
@@jamesbarron7568 shut the fuck up
great cover!!!
Its awkward that the double kick in the breakdown is actually in time and clean compared to the original
Appreciate all the stylistic differences compared to the original. It’s incredible how different this song is with the vocals change. Hetfield has such a more powerful and lower pitched voice.
That ghost notes
hmm they pulled if if well but it is nowhere near the raw power of and justice for all record. Metallica was at a whole new level during their time.
Metallicainjection minus the drummer.
Metallicainjection A new level? Of confidence and power?
Jimmy Hopkins Anselmo would be terrific doing cover of One
Mot Yrrah
HAHAAAAAAA! Justin Bieber is and will always be a GREAT musician! How many records have you sold?
Plus, you don't know a lot about drums, right? Playing only with power and messing up the easiest 4/4 beats doesn't qualify you as a good drummer.
Mot Yrrah
It's not about PLAYING only simple beats, it's about SCREWING THEM UP!
Covering Metallica is hard (unless you cover St Anger:) This is one of the only covers of metallica that i love
Not gonna lie, I love how some of the bits in this cover sounds, especially the harmony
Metallica would sound sick covering this!
Hands down better than the Korn version. 🔥🔥🔥
Im a metallica fan, but this is an amazing cover
That's exactly what I thought!
7 years later and I am still here
@@jayray7449 lol
i get what people say about the djent thing here, but this cover is freakin' awesome! literally blew me away!
I am a huge Metallica fan, they pretty much baptized my infatuated with metal music. I think this is a pretty good cover to be honest, I think the mix is a little crap, but I dig it a lot. I love the drumming, definitely a little different than Lars.
You should listen to other periphery material. May I prefer "Ragnarok" and "Make total destroy"? Great songs
+MrAntihumanism Still shits on the mix in And Justice for All
+MrAntihumanism It's crap youtube quality + ripped from radio.
05:13 start transonic barrier
if matt just used the ride instead of that china in the clean part this would be 10x better
I forgot you were the drummer in a highly successful band... Oh wait, that's Matt
Chandler Emhoff I like periphery but Misha said they all have to have side jobs to make ends meet haha
Don't know shit about drumming, but sounded pretty good to me!
glad you enjoyed it!!
11 years ago when they were still finding their sound, but even back then the instrumentals were awesome. I’d love them to re-record the vocals and re-mix the rest - their production quality and Spencer’s individual vocal skills have improved astronomically since then, they could make the ultimate One cover with their current form!
This is so awesome. Fucking love Periphery \m/
I enjoyed the song but I find the mix awful...
It's mixed for a game i think
Juan Ayestas Hard to judge the mix when the audio is heavily compressed for a 240p youtube video. You lose a significant amount of clarity in the high end when that happens.
Sadpants McGee I see...
Juan Ayestas To be fair, Justice was mixed to shit too lmao
Tony Stark Do a search for "And Justice For Jason" It sounds MUCH better than the original album.
Thanks for making our Diwali special.... childhood memories revisited
I love this version, it reminds me of Metallica's S&M version. But there's some serious overdrumming going on. The guitars and vocals are definitely on point.
I mean to be fair, drumming in Periphery songs is typically like that. I feel like it’s just them making this cover their own.
Nah, it's just that Lars underdrums 🤣
The guitar solo was pretty damn good
Good Cover, but points lot for the Myspace link in the description.
lost*
+BajiBunny look at the upload date of this video
+Tyler Rosentreter 2011. right, That's way after MySpace's run, like beyond that. People were even beyond Facebook by this point and using Twitter.
+BajiBunny Periphery still regularly updated their myspace page up until beginning of 2012 IIRC.
+BajiBunny Twitter is awful
Well done for the intro. Kept it melodic and paced but still did their hardcore sound they love
It may be a very different style, but nonetheless, a great cover
Big Dream Theater fan, love progressive groups. I'm new to Periphery but I'm liking everything so far. I enjoyed this cover, thanks for posting it. I'd also like to see this game remade or something, the idea was good.
I actually enjoy this song
Such a Damn good cover!!!! Fudge yeah Periphery!
