Sucks dude that he has to retire. I really liked his style of play and was sure he was going to win heaps of titles. Anyway he was a great sportsman for Argentina 🇦🇷 and wish the guy all the best.
Yes, he was one of those as I read in a different comment about Wawrinka: somebody who may not be remebered as one of the best ever, but has certainly done enough never to be forgotten. Enjoy your retirement Juan. Hope everything goes well, and I wish you nothing but the very best.
One of the most talented tennis players.22 Career titles, Grand Slam, he could have won the big 3 when they were the best but 2 years of not playing due to injuries and his knee destroyed him. You will always be in our memory Del Potro!

Maybe not as many as the big 3, but he surely would have gotten between them and would have taken several titles from them. I‘m German and since this day a huge Delpo fan. One of the best matches I‘ve ever seen. His forehand.. OMG, love it so much. So sad that his career end is near. Thanks for everything man, you are always in my heart.
Watching Delpo here, it blows my mind he's only 20 at this time. I didn't know he was so young. His play style is so unique and physically, he looks like a prime, 28 year old male. Crazy. Such a physical specimen. The Delpo forehand in my opinion will be one of the most unique strokes in tennis and one of the hardest to replicate. I don't think anyone will ever be able to hit it like he did...just impeccable timing to be able to hit such a flat shot so well. His timing on the forehand is just about on the level Fed's was...just more flat and even more powerful.
Delpo is still one of my favorite players, but its true; he's had more than his fair share of bad luck with injuries since he won the US Open. By January 2010 he got to a career high ranking of 4, then injures his right wrist. He gets surgery which takes well over a year to recover. Then he wins a bronze medal at the Olympics beating Djokovic, a Wimbledon semi the next year, and just when he gets back to 4th in the world he injures his left wrist, which once again needs surgery. I hope after numerous operations that this time he can fully recover and start competing again like he did in 2009.
fed has a good forehand but not better than delpo's... last year del potro was silver medalist and won cilic and murray to win the davis cup with NO backhand.. pure forehand
potro is taller. he can flatten it as he has more of a margin than most players, than Federer. that he flattens it, gives him the edge over all the tall players who did not figured that one out and their pathetic coaches who like to play it safe. they both have the forehands that they can physiologically hit, IMHO. Should be an interesting match.
As an Argentine, I remember seeing this match with my father, it was his first slam, very long-suffering and disputed. A pity that delpo has had to go through so many injuries and stops in his career, he had everything to be number 1 in the ranking at least once, he could have retired but he kept fighting and returned to play a final of us open in 2019, he won The long-awaited 2016 Davis Cup for Argentina, won 1000 masters and got two medals at the London and Rio Olympic Games. Besides that he is a gentleman on and off the court as Roger is too!
It'll be interesting to see what Federer says about this match in his autobiography. There's no question that this loss was a turning point in his career. I think it really rattled his own confidence and gave confidence to Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray to see a 20 y/o break him down in the fifth set like that. I wonder if this will haunt him the way McEnroe was (and still is) after losing the 1984 French Open to Lendl.
It's a terrible tough loss but nowhere near as bad as McEnroe's FO loss to Lendl. Federer did not even seem to care he lost this match. But i think he should have won this and AO 09.
Actually he did care that he lost this match, i believe he said afterwards this one bothered him for a while! This much, that he couldn't get his act together in the 2009 off season in which he played rather poorly!
Nadal was confident against Federer way before this match, at the time of this match, Nadal has defeated Federer in the last 3 slam finals they met on every surface, he was handling him just fine.
He would have won slams definitely but he was no where close to the likes of Federer, Nadal and Novak. In the same year Federer defeated Del Potro 6-3 6-0 6-0 at AO

The slam that got away :( What were you thinking RF, going to his forehand so often! Definitely a turning point in his career. Probably the only slam final he lost where he was the heavy favorite.
+ctmcarlo Honestly I think Federer is the heavy favourite in all Wimbledon and US Open finals. Look at the 2015 US Open final and the 2014 and 2015 Wimbledons, he was the heavy favourite compared to Djokovic and had the crowd behind him but ended up losing.
+Eljay Shaun I don't think so. djokovic is at his best now while federer is not anymore. he's still very good, but in tennis you can't do much against aging.
Nep Tis Yep, Federer is obviously not as good as he used to be due to old age, but I think he is still the most loved and the "crowd favourite" in Grand Slams, with the possible exception of Roland Garros. He may not be playing the best, but I think he is the most admired out of all the current players because of his talent and flair and the legacy he's left behind. One can only hope he retires later than sooner.
Can't believe Fed had 5 US Open wins in a row and then didn't win it ever again anymore. Federer beat Hewitt, Old Agassi, Roddick, Young Djokovic and Young Murray in the US Open finals that he did win. Then Delpo beat him here, Djoko beat him in the SF in 2010 and 2011 while Fed had MP's in both matches.
Nadal and Federer never met in US Open semi finals or finals also for 20 years. I think they will never meet some player will come stop Nadal or Federer actually Djokovic stopped Federer twice reaching finals to play against Nadal in Finals.
When all the members of “Big Three” were in semis of a grand slam but the 4th guy manage to win the whole thing ! Not happens every time 🥵 What a leg💯 del potro
Their is no big 3 in 2009 Their was Big 2 in 2009 actually. Their is big 3(2011 to 2022) Djokovic was world ranking no 3 but still he was not in Big 3 as he didn't win any major title in 2009 and 2010
Federer started dominating 2 Surfaces(Hard and Grass)in 2003 to 2007. Nadal was dominanting 1 surface in 2005 to 2007 which is French open. Nadal is clay court player first who adapted to grass quickly in his prime reached Wimbledon finals(2006 and 2007) played against Peak Federer at Wimbledon and lost.
Delpo magnificent... Roger, so, so close to the 18th.... Such wonderful players. Sad for Roger, my Number 1 player forever, but so happy for Delpo. And both clearly thrilled at the end.
la derecha de Delpo sin duda es la mas rasante y fuerte del circuito, ademas la pelota de lo rasante apenas da bote, no importa el rival quien sea devolverla es muy dificil.
2017 !! Del potro "la torre de tandil " volvio a vencer a su majestad roger Federer en Us open ..vamos Delpo que este us open lo volvemos a ganar vamos Argentia carajo !!
This match is the turning point for Federer at the US Open. He's never reached to the US Open final after this match. Actually, the turning point was when he had the derogatory comment with the chair umpire towards Del Potro, which irritated him, then he showed Federer what he was made of.
Primera ves que veo el resumen de esta final y creo que lo que hizo Delpotro fue un Milagro, ganarle a Federer en su mejor momento, se le dio el partido perfecto ganado esos dos tie break
It looks like Fed forgot that this was a Grand Slam final, and not an exhibition match. I guess that happens when you play 18 out of 19 GS finals between 2005 and 2010. Ridiculous loss, he should've won in straights.
It makes me so upset seeing how good he was and how much better he could've been without the injuries. But I think we should all be grateful that he's at least won a grand slam and a 1000 masters. He's achieved already enough with those two.
With only 20 years, he won a Grand Slam title beating Nadal in semis and Federer on the final. He won a GS before Murray, Cilic or Wawrinka... what a pitty Del Potro had so many injuries... Real hero for argentineans
I love both Roger and delpo! Delpo is gentle giant who has the fastest forehand who still manages to float from one part of court to other. He is terrific and more important kind and light hearted! 10:31 love the reaction from delpo. Wished that we could have seen him more in the slams. Generally I am a big fan of Roger’s outfits, and nice in this one too, delpo looks sharp in black with yellow headband.
i worked as a volunteer at the miami open and the ONLY pro that was nice to us was Juan Martin Del Potro, he would say "buenos dias" as he walked the tunels inside the stadium.most other pros just acted like we were invisible,. Hands down the rudest Pro was Kyrgios , it is not just an act. the guy really is a jerk.
4:50 & 5:06 turning point of the match and the 2 most important forehands in Del Potro's career. If It wasn't for those 2 incredible passing shots, Federer would have won the second set and then I doubt very much that Del Po could have been able to come back. Del Potro's forehand was absolutely lethal in that tournament, & off course, in that final.
Federer had never lost a GS slam match when being two sets up at that point of his career, the chances if he had served it out at 30-15 and the shot that just touched the line had gone out and he had two set points, the high chances are he would have won the whole match but well done Juan...we never saw the best of him..
Beautiful players to watch, the both of them. God, I wish Delpo had managed to avoid injury. In 2009 he came out of nowhere, QFs in Aus Open, SFs in French (and very nearly denied Federer his one and only French Open, go look up the match, it was close, and he'd probably have beaten Soderling in the final just as easily as Federer did), then beat Nadal and Federer back to back to win the US. Suddenly it wasn't just Djokovic, there were *two* new grand-slam contenders to shake up the Federer/Nadal domination. There's no telling how good he could have gotten. Then the injuries. But every time he comes back, within a few months he's in quarters, semis and even another US Open final, and then the injuries hit again. It's amazing that he's still competitive with the top guys when he's fit. Not many players make two successful career comebacks. Here's hoping for a third.
@5:57 commentator "third time lucky"wtf man when Federer hits same kinda winner you call him a genius and when someone else does it even better you call them lucky! #Biased
What a memory by re watching this game after Delpo retired. I followed this guy as much as I could and named my third child Juan Martin!!!! After shouting vamos Delpo!!! A million times during his games. I really learnt to love this guy for what he made me feel when playing, more than any other i saw. I'll miss not watching him anymore. On the other side there is a sad story around him cause after winning so much things, getting contracts with lot of sponsors and winning lot of money playing excellent tennis, he is now bankrupt due to the bad business his father did, who died last year and moved all debts to Juan Martin. This is the sad part i hate......
Win or lose Del Potro has had the most memorable 5 setters against multiple opponents. Sucks injuries killed him cause he would've been a threat on all surfaces. Great win he totally deserved the title. 9:15 is when I knew Delpo had this. Amazing point

Eljay Shaun nah he's not as good as he used to be... he's even better
Gracias delpo! Jamás olvidaré los momentos tan especiales y emocionales que me histe pasar!!❤️❤️👏👏👏🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
The Hammer of THOR !!!!! 🇦🇷❤️
Recuerdo este partido como si hubiese sido ayer, grande Del Potro ! Sos un ídolo
Federer and blowing match points, name a better duo.
@@s.l5787 Djokovic and saving match points haha
Fed was 2 points away from winning 2009 in the fourth set. This was just another match he could've won.
Nadal and Federer never met in US Open semi finals or finals also for 20 years.
I think they will never meet some player will come stop Nadal or Federer actually
Djokovic stopped Federer twice reaching finals to play against Nadal in Finals.
Impossible to hate this man. Dynamite of a forehand, heart of gold. Farewell Juan Martin 🙌❤️
Its too bad Fed lost when he wore his best outfit
No he wore his best outfit in 2013 when he got revenge against Del Potro
2weakkickflip No 2009 US open was the best costume Fed wore ever.
revenzo3
he was dressed in his best and prepared to go down as a gentleman, like that guggenheim guy from the titanic.
2017 AO best outfit.
nah i reckon the 2007 version was better, complete black set. He looked like a fucking assassin
When all the members of “Big Three” were in semis of a grand slam but the 4th guy manage to win the whole thing ! Not happens every time 🥵
What a leg💯 del potro
Their is no big 3 in 2009
Their was Big 2 in 2009 actually.
Their is big 3(2011 to 2022)
Djokovic was world ranking no 3 but still he was not in Big 3 as he didn't win any major title in 2009 and 2010
Federer started dominating 2 Surfaces(Hard and Grass)in 2003 to 2007.
Nadal was dominanting 1 surface in 2005 to 2007 which is French open.
Nadal is clay court player first who adapted to grass quickly in his prime reached Wimbledon finals(2006 and 2007) played against Peak Federer at Wimbledon and lost.
Big 3 exist in 2008 not 2009 as Djokovic failed to win major titles in 2009 and 2010 actually
2008= Big 3
2009= Big 2
2010= Big 2
Just passing through on my journey to watch every Federer match.
Never should have lost that match... all in his hands.
Came back after the news of Delpos retirement. He really could have been one to disrupt the top 4 if not for injuries. such a nice guy too.
Delpo magnificent... Roger, so, so close to the 18th.... Such wonderful players. Sad for Roger, my Number 1 player forever, but so happy for Delpo. And both clearly thrilled at the end.
let's see this Sunday... He got another chance fight in the final. Hope he doesn't miss this chance....
he didnt
la derecha de Delpo sin duda es la mas rasante y fuerte del circuito, ademas la pelota de lo rasante apenas da bote, no importa el rival quien sea devolverla es muy dificil.
2017 !! Del potro "la torre de tandil " volvio a vencer a su majestad roger Federer en Us open ..vamos Delpo que este us open lo volvemos a ganar vamos Argentia carajo !!
As fiercely unrelenting as he was talented, we will miss his class on the court. Hats off to you Juan, your work will not be forgotten 👏
That forehand will be missed forever.
This match is the turning point for Federer at the US Open. He's never reached to the US Open final after this match. Actually, the turning point was when he had the derogatory comment with the chair umpire towards Del Potro, which irritated him, then he showed Federer what he was made of.
Most of what you said is correct, but Federer did reach the final again in 2015.
It looks like Fed forgot that this was a Grand Slam final, and not an exhibition match. I guess that happens when you play 18 out of 19 GS finals between 2005 and 2010. Ridiculous loss, he should've won in straights.
Delpo is such a gentlemen , my fav player after federer.
14:27 un tipo gritando en la pregunta: "Dale Delpo que no da más, vamooo" jajajajajajjajaj
It is so sad that Delpo is going to retire! Great guy!!
It makes me so upset seeing how good he was and how much better he could've been without the injuries. But I think we should all be grateful that he's at least won a grand slam and a 1000 masters. He's achieved already enough with those two.
And he has that Olympic silver medal
Grande
@@mrb4761 He's planning on coming back for the Tokyo Olympics so lets hope he can win that. Then he has all he needs in this sport
With only 20 years, he won a Grand Slam title beating Nadal in semis and Federer on the final. He won a GS before Murray, Cilic or Wawrinka... what a pitty Del Potro had so many injuries... Real hero for argentineans
@9:15 high-five by potro he's a gem!
Biggest upset in Federer’s career, del Potro should be proud. Enjoy retirement, he was my second favorite player, best forehand ever.
One of the biggest shockers ever.
Quarterfinals and especially this match were so incredibly well played by delpo that i just cried
What a SPECTACULAR match. Wow. Amazing highlights! Delpo was playing out of his mind.
Absurd, marvellous match from Delpo... RF had a bad luck that day, I think... that challenge in 2nd set... Made huge difference in that match!
Tennis is really great. Really liked it. :)
7:39 what the actual fuck is that speed
i worked as a volunteer at the miami open and the ONLY pro that was nice to us was Juan Martin Del Potro, he would say "buenos dias" as he walked the tunels inside the stadium.most other pros just acted like we were invisible,.
Hands down the rudest Pro was Kyrgios , it is not just an act. the guy really is a jerk.
I miss that Delpo :(
Maybe its back!
Oh yes he is!
Best comeback vs thiem in the round of 16 by del potro!!!
He won Indian Wells vs Federer!!!!
Maybe he could won again us open this week. 🙂
Flawless federer at its peak, But still it's potro's outrageous tennis!
More highlights in this match than in Murray's career
Okay...
lol
ahahhaha
what?
A bit unnecessary, but I still chuckled xD
Always remember, when Roger wants to talk, he talks.
Too bad delpo couldnt stay healthy. An unbelievable talent
@5:57 commentator "third time lucky"wtf man when Federer hits same kinda winner you call him a genius and when someone else does it even better you call them lucky!
#Biased
Mystery Man it’s a figure of speech meaning he did it not meant to be condescending
Third time lucky means that he won the set on his 3rd set point lmao. Not in regards to that forehand
Federer played around with his food like normal at this time and got served. The only slam im glad Federer lost especially what happened to del potro
Juan came back, after losing the first set, and greatly improved his game- (hitting impossible shots, from all over the court). Amazing!
Delpo... how i loved this man !!!! with Roger they are my two favorite players ever !!!!!
Del Potro = Best Forehand ever; Wawrinka = Best Backhand ever.
Win or lose Del Potro has had the most memorable 5 setters against multiple opponents. Sucks injuries killed him cause he would've been a threat on all surfaces. Great win he totally deserved the title. 9:15 is when I knew Delpo had this. Amazing point
Fed: *runs around the backhand to hit a forehand to Delpo's forehand side
Delpo's right arm: "You have fucked up"
hoy los dos estan retirados, que duro es el paso del tiempo
he won Federer yesterday in the US open
His forehand was a true formidable killer.
que reves que tenias juan lpm
Biggest reason why I love Delpo
Roger played an unbelievable shot at 0:55 !
So happy for Delpo that he won this match - those cannon forehands in the 4th and 5th sets :)
Del Potro ❤️,todo un campeón!!! His forehand is made of 🔥
Del potro bateu forte demais na bolinha essa semana aí, tá louco…
It began so promising. The way he broke in the 2nd game. He dominated the first two sets. and then the ill advised drop shot when serving for the 2nd.
"ill advised dropshot when serving for the match" reminds me of the IW final this year
