I like the look before you painted
I agree!
Debhora pedroza just the cheap paneling? Nooo.
What's the point of doing a smear if you're going to paint over it.
@@dcurry8147 it’s all about the texture to make it look like real brick.
@@nancysmyth-gray1698 no after the schmear before the paint
I liked the look before the paint only because it reminded me of the "used brick" we had on our house when I was very young. I have always wanted a used brick patio and finally getting one. Thanks for ideas.
Just get white thin set mortar mix, $13. You guys doing too much work, dah.
I love how this came out but i dont get it.... if your going to white wash the whole wall anyway, why is the spackle necessary?
User Unknown it creates texture that looks like real brick and helps it not look like cheap paneling once it is painted.
The spackle gives it a rough texture which gives real brick affect
Wall looks great! Two suggestions: Consider a grey paint wash before applying texture to soften the orange tones. Using a flat wide rubber scraper to apply wall texture will go on easier, much faster, and you'll have more control. Great job!
Really nice!
Too overdone for my taste. A light white wash would have terrific
Woooooo Hooooooo. You did “German Schmear”.. I think I love the way you did it the best so far. I have watched lots of videos and I am not sure my pinned/plate shoulders could do the others! But your way looks less “stressing” on the BODY!
Thank you... THANK YOU for showing us your way! You 2 are the BEST!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It was pretty easy, took about 3 hours to cut the boards, apply the lightweight and white wash it.
You guys come up with the most creative coolest things. I really love how your wall turned out it is so neat looking.
Crown molding will hide the gaps.
You both did a great job looks great . My favorite look was the one before the paint
I have faux brick in my kitchen (was already installed when we bought it) I absolutely hate it! 😭 cant cover it and we cant remove it without taking out the entire wall. ANYTHING flat would allow other options down the road. Just sayin'. Jmo
I don't think you're supposed to paint German Schmear...it got almost solid in some areas!
You can take off or put on as much as you prefer. 😊 I didn’t want to see much of the red brick.
You look much younger with bangs and no glasses:) Beautiful!
love you videos!
I was a little surprised that you didn't shift the abutting panels to correct for the 1/2 brick at the cut edges to eliminate the vertical 'joint line'. Otherwise, good job.
Super cool guys.... gonna try this for the back of a hutch!
I wanna see when you do it!
My husband is a brick mason. I've been wanting to do some real brick work in our house. Can't wait to share this video with him. He may faint😂😂
Ahaha! Don’t show him! 😂😂
BTW...
It looks great.
Thank goodness for the schmear!!! The orange brick was bringing back bad memories from the 80’s!!! 😂🤣😂
I hope you check the comments on your older videos. I was wondering do you have to use the glue on the back of the paneling? I'm afraid that if I don't like it or I get tired of it that it will be hard to remove.
If you guys move I want to see the new owners reaction. I think they’ll love ❤️ the house.
The seams would look better if you cut out the bricks along the edge and puzzled them together. Looks nice though!
I wonder if I could use a bunch of 100 lb. 3M Command strips.
I love it. I’d like to do this in our master bath, do you think mold would be an issue though? Being that it’s paneling?
I just tagged my hubby on FB. Our laundry room is the next room on our reno list and I totally want to do this!!!
Do it! I’m loving my wall!
i wonder why the panels don't come with ink matching the brick color... 🤔
How do we blend out the seams between each panel. I’m doing this technique now and I feel like no matter what I do, all I see is the lines from each panel where they connect
This looks so good! 😍 I didn't use paneling, but I used high density foam to create every stone individually on my faux uneven stone accent wall shown in my room makeover video! Hard work pays off.
Why not just buy panels with a schmear look to begin with?
Looks good but liked it better before the paint it seem to have covered a lot of the color and lines separating the bricks
If I used both products that you used, what product should I use to seal it. My project is going to be the backsplash behind the stove. Thanks
We did bead board paneling painted white and sealed our backsplash with big top and it held up great. I’d go with Big Top over the brick finish too.

It is amazing to me how much like me you are 😁 I have been planning A German schmear(Sp) brick wall in my boring kitchen for a year now.only in using laminate brick. It's going to cost about $450 and then the grout cost, but watching you doing the shmear is helping me. I want less schmear I think and more of the brick to show through. Love it! Thank you guys!!!

I think it looked better before you painted, but it still turned out great.
Great look! And you have a very cute and smart lady there young man!
I love this idea for an area in my basement but won't paint it. I liked the red brick. Thanks for the idea.
I prefer the red brick look too.
I love the way you work so beautifully as a couple. It’s so refreshing to see ❤️🌈
Now I want to do my laundry area like this
Zeb is cracking me up when he first put on the spackle!!! The wall looks fabulous!!!!! Great job!!!!!
He did well with the “random” spakling!
Ohh yayy, you are in Utah so maybe I can find the same panels as you have, you say you got them at home depot, can you tell me what they are called so I can look for them? I would have to have them delivered ughh
It’s just called brick paneling. It’s about $36 a sheet. I’m doing this on my TV wall.
I saw one done over some gray toned brick and it turned out awesome, and didn’t need to be painted. Love that you offered an alternative to getting this look with affordable products. Keep up the good work. ❤️
I love this this... Best tutorial I've seen... I'm doing a brick backsplash in my kitchen, I will be using this technique..
We have fake brick in our dinning room. It's off-white with a medium taupe color grout. It looks drab.
It's really a eat-in kitchen area and our table has a stain top with black legs and the chairs are black.
distressed with the rope on the chair seats.
I'm wondering what to do with it?
The same effect works on real brick if you like the German schmear look.
Jami Ray Vintage It's fake. I'm going to try what you used. It looks really nice. I was afraid to do anything. I'm such a chicken when it comes to wall's.
I did something similar in my home but all I did was white wash it and sanded in spots. It came out amazing. I usually love everything you do but not crazy about your wall. My way was a lot easier too.
How did you white wash yours? What products did you use? Did you use anything to cover the seams?
@@TheEnigmaticmuse I used regular white interior pant (matte) and just wiped it on. I did use some white caulking for the seems which matched perfectly and being that I sanded in spots I stayed away from sanding the seems. It was a lot easier and looks great.
@@maryann1412 thank you so much.
What finish did you're white paint have? eggshell?
It’s matte. It’s DIY clay based paint. Here’s more info on it.

You guys are artists! Beautiful!
You know what! When I get a booth, these will be my walls! Love it!
Excellent idea for a booth!
I swear y'all could paint a dog turd and make it look FABULOUS!! 😍😍
Do you have another paint options from home depot? We were going to do this project this week and I realized I would have to order the paint you posted :) Thank you! It looks great!
Any ol wall paint should work. The DIY paint is nice because it’s easy to wipe back with a damp cloth if you get too much or too little when you do your wash.
Thank you!! :)
In lieu of the DIY paint what other type of paint would be suitable?
Andrea Lynn anything that could be watered down and covers well. I can’t vouch for the brands we don’t use. But I am sure there is something out there
This is pretty! Are you guys not buying a home anymore? You may have addressed this and I just never saw? Anyway, love all the updates you guys are doing♡.
Liked it better before painting
House renovations are so easy in the USA with all those wooden houses and walls. In Belgium everybody has brick houses and interior wall usually too. Certainly in older gouses. And that makes it so diffecult to make any changes even small ones.
I love it I've been wanting to do this in my front living room. It turned out so beautiful. Thank you so much for all your instructions. Love to all, of you!
Good cut job for the faux brick! I'd get so frustrated with the goop I'd end up using my hands. LOL. It turned out amazing!!!!!
Thanks for the great idea and how to video. Planning to do one wall in my condo, but I'm going to be painting it white for a cleaner look.
really fine job!
The paint was a bad touch
How long do you wait for the spackle to dry before you lightly use sandpaper?
Depends on the brand. It will usually tell you on the container but on average just a few hours. Overnight if it’s really thick
Much appreciated🤘
I still see the seams though
I saw this done on Prodigal Pieces
a couple months ago. Love this technique for changing funky looking faux brick sheets.
Kid patina 😆 love it.
Very nice job!!
Really very nice
Since my new home is all brick with render on the walls, I could always chip away some of the render, smooth it a bit and have the look.
Love the wall!!
The Zebmeister
I did this same faux schmear for my kitchen backsplash 😍😍
Anna Meyers .... OH... tell me more of how you did it! I want to do this to mine in my kitchen! 👍❤️👍❤️
Jayne Brown
Almost the same way as she did, but I got my panels from Lowe’s (they are dark red with black grout lines) and used dry wall compound as my “schmear” over the entire panel and just wiped off with a wet rag where I thought it needed. I used polycrylic as my top coat! I love it 😍
Anna Meyers Mine are actually half Bricks and a wall. I have watched many video of people adding the compound heavy and then wiping off to show some brick. But I like what Jami and Zeb did with putting it on lightly then a white wash. I thought of just simply a white wash, but want the texture!
Thank you so much for the information... I guess I am more nervous that my “pinned shoulders and plate and screwed neck” will prevent me from doing it at all. 😕
Looks dirty
The wall looks great!!! Going to tweek mine a little different but thanks.
Loved it before the paint!! Doing it to our wall. Thanx
Thank you!
Very nice.
What type of sealant would you use if you were to seal it?
Probably sweet Pickins top coat or big top
Beautiful. Exactly the DIY video I was looking for. Great job. Thank you for the information.
Thank you for sharing !!! Definitely doing this
I like it
Has the spackling yellowed at all since application? Thank you
It hasn’t. Still nice and white
@@JamiRayVintage awesome! Thank you so much. I wasn't sure whether to use spackling or joint compound as I've heard they may yellow. Now I know which one to get! Great job and thank you again!!
Wow... Now you will have to come do mine?? No? Trade you for a dozen rolling pins? Maybe... that's the spirit... keep thinking on it. Hugs!
hehe
Wow what an amazing technique I think it looks so natural
OMGOSH! That wall is just gorgeous!!! I’m looking around my house just wondering where I could do the same technique!!
I’m thinking of trying to do some smaller signs with the technique. Almost like a reverse window.
Looks great, Y'all!! Maybe doing something like this in our kitchen. I've had a difficult time finding brick wall panels with actual textured depth, instead of that flat faux illusion. Hmmm, Home Depot, thanks for the tip! I've been wanting to German Schmear the exterior of our home for a couple years now. We're finally going to do it this year. Wish us luck!!
Awesome!
Hey Jami & Zeb! We are doing this in our kitchen... What should I use for the top coat? Thanks so much! - Jen
I would use Big Top. It’s what we have on our kitchen table and it’s been very durable.
jamirayvintage.com/products/diy-big-top-top-coat-diy-paint?_pos=1&_sid=a6765629e&_ss=r
I like the look you made it , it makes it look as if it has been there for a long time , great idea .
This is interesting. Would you confirm the exact panel you purchased - was it from Home Depot? Not sure if I missed it in the list above - ?
It was from Home Depot. Their faux brick paneling. Our Home Depot keeps it back by the trim and mouldings
I have a question! I have two areas in my home with indoor exposed brick steps and was wanting to do a german schmear technique on them. Yours seems to be the easiest and most cost effective technique I have found. But I have yet to see anyone do this on steps, only walls. I am wondering since they will be stepped on if I need to seal them, and if so what would you recommend I use as a seal? I don't want them to look perfect so I actually dont care if stepping on them over time will wear some of the finish away, but because they are indoor steps I wouldnt want to track flaking paint throughout my home.
They make sealers for concrete and bricks. Not sure how it would hold up since I haven’t tried it but that might be your best bet.
Great job on the Schmear. I remodeled our (real) farmhouse kitchen last year and used those same panels and did a schmear on them. I didn't go quite as heavy as you all and didn't paint but I like how yours looks and may go back onto mine with a whitewash. I've had multiple people walk in and comment that they didn't know our house was brick. Makes me happy to hear.
Nice!
I tried just painting mine. Doesn't look that great. Tommow I'll try this.
Awesome guys great job once again I think I’d even like to try this somewhere in my house . I actually did a textured faux kind of stucco job in my living room using joint compound mixed in with the color of paint I wanted then glazed it on top after it was all on there an dry it was messy to do of course but very fun ! An I had no help I did it with just me the one person an did all four of my living room walls . My husband thinks I’ve turned into some kind of artistic genus or something . He says he gets hours of entertainment out of the things I do to our house an always says he thinks there’s nothing I won’t tackle ! I just get a kick out of listening to him .
That’s awesome! And even better that your husband likes it. 😊❤️
A couple of questions: is the smear's purpose to hide the seams and provide texture so it looks more like real brick? Just wondering. Great job!
Nope, just to cover the brick. It became a thing on old brick buildings to cover up cracks in the grout or damage bricks.
what kind of nail gun is that?
Milwaukee M18 18 gauge nailer.
I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I really really like it.
I should do this behind my fire place/stove
If you ever do that behind your stove I am interested in knowing if it worked and if it's hard to keep cleaning. I also would love to do this with our bricks around our wood stove.
love this and patina is always the solution, hahaha
You two did a great job. I love the look.
Your shmearing looks awsome, thank you for sharing and making it simple for us. 💖🙏
Really liked how this technique turned out. I'm thinking of trying it for a large wall in my bathroom/laundry room! Thank you both!!
Perfect place for an accent wall!
That turn out amazing! I've seen people do Similar techniques but I definitely like this the best! 💜
I’ve been wanting to do this on our fireplace to cover the tile that I hate, but don’t have the money to replace 😂 I just love the look of it! Can’t wait to see the finished laundry room ❤️
Stylish laundry room
I LOVE this, I might try doing this this Summer 😳😆😆😆
You found the video!
I love the way the wall turned out
Wow this came out fantastic 👍 Saw Chip Gaines do this once! Great job😊
Thanks!
You guys..it turned out DARLING!!!💚 How cute it would be in a French country kitchen too! FANTASTIC job..and looks do-able! (Or on an ugly fireplace so cute..)great job, thanks!!
Now to get myself s French country kitchen!
Yesss!!👏🏼💚 me,too lol
