I was on the brink of either scrapping or putting my ‘82 XS400 on marketplace today when I googled “does anybody build XS400” and stumbled upon this series. After watching this video, I cleared off both my workbenches and decided I’m going to give it a go. I don’t even have a wiring harness for it, but I’ve been wanting a project, and here it was right under my nose. So, thank you for getting me excited about this bike again AND saving an old Yamaha from the chopping block
As somewhat of a noob, I’d dig a short on what you/folks do with spent fluids - having a home garage and wondering how to manage old gas/oil/etc. Love to see your creative process on this! 🙏🙏
Well oil is easy as we can take that to any auto parts store to be disposed of. Gas is a bit more tricky as it only evaporates so fast but I usually keep it in a separate container out of the way. Coolant, still trying to figure that out
@@BrickHouseBuildsthanks - ya, I’d seen a shop with a nice oil burning heater they were dumping their stuff in - probly best for a big high ceiling spot with better ventilation I successfully evaporated a tank of spent gas in an open 5 gallon bucket in my backyard last year but it didn’t feel super pro 😅
@@BrickHouseBuilds AFAIK coolant/ethylene glycol is not considered hazardous waste and has no regulations against disposing into sewer drains that connect to waste treatment facilities -- so don't pour it into storm drains is what I'm saying. Edit: It is poisonous to animals who will be tempted by its sweet taste so do not pour it on the ground because it will kill cats and dogs, etc.
Another masterful video from the Master. Always on the edge of my seat for your posts. Amazing and Inspirational. No doubt about it! Your Padowan Learner, Always. Steve from New Hampshire.
Looks like real life lego set - all you need to do now is bag it, box, and sell it.....or in your case clean it, paint it, build it!!! haha - good one BJ
The oil leaking on the floor comment cracked me up. I can relate! I usually just throw a piece of cardboard or an old floor mat under the bike instead of fixing it or draining the oil...duh😂
Bringing back great memories of working on my XS250! Except when you turned the kickstart with no casing in place, you didn't do it like a hamfisted idiot and snap the journal in the crankcase 😢
Looks like another good build. Wondering if brazing the wire tube would work... Question. Wondering if you have e:er delt with Honda z50r. I have a 79 and in rebuilding the carb I removed the emulsion tube. After that I heear they are not removable. Found that ones in kit are smaller. Any input would be great. Thanks and keep up the good work
It's so funny how your build timeline has been matching up with mine. Years ago I bought my first GL500 and one of your CX500 engine teardown video's automatically played after an @classicoctane video and it was like the internet gods were on point. Then last summer I randomly fell into an XS400 and like month after that you were talking about tearing into this build. Again divine motorcycle intervention. I cant wait for you to get into that engine as I will be following along and taking notes! Also, how do you organize all your nuts and bolts. I was using ziplock bags but I feel like I'm not labeling them very well. Are more bags better? Seems like I'm always forgetting what goes where. Keep it up!
If I install crashbars to my bike (2007 versys 650), which involves using engine mounts, and then the whole bike vibrates heavily around 4-5K rpm, what does it mean? Can you please give your thoughts on what need to be inspected, even with the case if I completely remove crash bars and vibrations are still there? But no leaks, poor idling or other related problems, only vibrations. Thanks .
@@DmitrySerbin It could be that it's eliminating any dampening that engine mounts may have had if they were rubber or not. I'm not familiar with those bikes so I really don't know
@BrickHouseBuilds engine mounts has no bushings or other rubber parts. Metal to metal. Let me be more specific. Is there any proper way to align engine's mounting holes to the frame's mounting points? Should I align them perfectly ot let the engine hang and them tighten all up, from your experience?
i was hoping you'd show a way to remove an engine other than just the brute force method, i need to swap out a couple xj650 motors and there's no way i can just lift them in and out of the frames by myself and i'd prefer not to lay the bikes on their sides, when pulling engines that way it's to easy to break cooling fins which just end up causing way more work .......
Thats my CBX. I had started a restoration a couple years back and then multiple business and life changes happened which stalled it out. I am planning to be back on the project within the next month. ua-cam.com/play/PLerq_C5Llt2xSGwXYI6Jfpf9urToXvXZ2.html
I'm getting a good vibe on this build. These bikes never got any love whatsoever in the past.
It will look killer when done I can promise that!
I had one that was poorly modified. Sad little thing

Heck yeah man! Glad you got the fire lit again
This bike has a lovely stance. Lucky man 👌
🙏🙏
My second bike , bought brand new in 83' , all it was the Special version , and gave it a more chopper look ..😊, actually a fun bike....👍

Nice work BJ. Enjoyed the video, and look forward to the next. WORK SAFE OUT THERE!
🤘🤘
Awsome as allways
Thank ya!
I would solder the copper wire tubes😮
That would not allow the blended look im after unfortunately. This is extremely thin copper as well so I'd worry about heat

The shop looks amazing. Grade a tools!
Thank you!
A work of beauty, in a master's hands.

The shop looks good congrats and best of luck moving forward creating the brand .

Hi Bj nice tear down mate this bike is going to look minted when done I can sense it 👍👌❤️🔧🔧🔧🏍️🏍️🏁🏁

I've had a drip pan eternally under it lol

Oh no! That would suck!

Very strange how that works! Lots of baggies, storage totes, and photos to document
Awesome
🤘🤘
Cool build. I wish it was an RD400, though! Similar wheels, suspension, and frame it looks like.
An RD would be really cool for sure
I really enjoy watching other people work a bike. At my age I'd rather ride one than work on one.
Glad you enjoy the videos

So it vibrates and crash bars have nothing to do with it?
@BrickHouseBuilds I'm going to figure it out this evening, but vibrations appeared at the same moment when I installed crashbars.

@DmitrySerbin I'm sorry man I have no idea. Id look at specific forums for versys for your question

Get a buddy and a 2x4 to strap to the engine. I often don't have help available
Whats up with Honda 6 in line?

I wouldn’t want to waste clean oil like that either by draining it
I was surprised how clean it was actually. Probably hadn't been ran on it actually
My 360 leaks like crazy too. At least I know it has oil 😂
im rebuilding to a yamaha xs 400 but the bike is overheating somebody now why ?
nice job .
I would have no idea where to start without being there unfortunately
Where did you get your pipes boss?
I made/modified them actually ua-cam.com/video/sd1PVATIqac/v-deo.html
Just one question mister. Did you find all those bearing balls? 😎
Yeah I found them. Went straight into the trash lol
I think i know why you didnt drain the oil. Its because you went off on a tangent😁
😂
Had a mate with a SX400 back in the day, and i had a CB450 just like the one on the other stand🛵🛵
Awesome! I'm beyond excited for the 450 revival
