I understand that Eivor is a swell guy/gal who doesn't slaughter innocent villagers or behead every monk in the way of the nearest treasure chest, but the result feels so tepid, and doesn't give the (literary, cinematic) illusion of being a Viking warrior. Then take away most of the chance to be an atypical Viking warrior who instead is stealthy and assassin-y and operates often in the shadows, and there's nothing much left. Or, at least, that's how it stands, as far as I got in the game.

Having black box assassinations back after so long made me ecstatic for an RPG style AC game that uses these. Think of how cool it would be if you had an actual speech stat or strength stat that could be used for these missions.

    • @maxm.m.7219
      @maxm.m.7219 Рік тому

There is a speech stat that can be used. It was more prominent in the main game where, depending on your charisma level (which you raise by winning flyting matches), you could sometimes have the option to basically use your "speech" level to talk your way out of a situation, or intimidate/convince enemies/people into giving you info about something without having to pay them or something else.
Siege of Paris only had one single moment of these, but it was still sad and heart-warming, nonetheless.

Good review. Nice to see some people saying good things about it, cause I absolutely love this game! And this dlc was a perfect and meaningful continuation of Eivor’s character and story with a fresh storyline and lots of great characters. I really liked WotD as well, but it definitely didn’t feel as meaningful as this one does. Especially because it had scenes with her reflecting on her life. And it had some scenes with Randvi which was good to see, even though she sounded like Valka. Eivor not officially joining the Hidden Ones makes perfect sense to me, and I LOVE that we still get to see them somewhat. The fact that they’re there in the background definitely works with there shadowy nature. And that note left by the assassin to Eivor was perfect. Telling her that he sees her as an ally and friend because of her actions, even though he can’t actually risk meeting her was sooooo cool! “You work in the light so that I can work in the dark.” I just loved that they are further reinforcing the fact that Eivor not an Assassin, but she also is an Assassin in almost every way except in name and status. She chooses her family and her life over working in the shadows, but she still fights the same fight as well as her own. I’m rambling now, but I can’t say enough about how much I love this game. Thanks for the review!

I was half-expecting this outcome in terms of your reception of this DLC, to be honest. :P
Main reason being, Valhalla's base game is simply way too long and stretched for what it attempts to do, while the DLCs are at the very least, more concise, which _immediately_ eradicates one of the base game's most damaging issues.
The gameplay looks suitably ridiculous, but to hear that the main story and acting are actually pretty good is quite shocking to me. That, I did not expect.
Also, yess, A Plague Tale is so sick that you mentioning it is going to make me reinstall it tomorrow. Heavily / overly-scripted but great stealth, puzzles, and bordering on survival horror atmosphere at times.

Edit: I'm not saying the main story is bad. I am one of the ones who liked it. But at the same time I think it could have been better. In the siege of paris the caracthers feel more memorable and well written (dialogues, arcs and stuff), wich lacks in some of the main game arcs. At the same time the siege of paris adds some moments where we, the players, are allowed to breath with the carachters, such as the one time when Eivor talks with his revan, and about his parents. Those moments are kindda rare in the main story. But thats only my opinion and my experience. Its okay for u to dissagre :)

I was coming in with pretty low expectations after the Druids one, but I geniuenly enjoyed every mission, the characters were great, and I loved that the final decision was not based on what you chose in a dialogue, but you could make a decision mid fight, no matter what you promised to the other characters earlier. If you take time to READ what Odo says, his redicilous outburst meeting Eivor makes no sense, since Odo actually seems like a rational man in the notes. I gave f** all about collecting armours/weapons, but see Ubisoft loaned the rat mechanic from A Plague Tale (were you actually had to use your brain, not weild a sword). Furthermore, the Ireland dlc actually had a purpose; I went there between quests to empty the chest and get about 560 silver. The side activity with the rebel stuff was plain fluff, who cares to go to some location 20 times to get better equipment to go to the same location, rinse and repeat. AND the Ireland dlc had Kassandra as a plus (although I have a strong suspicion it wasnt the same voice actress)

@jayvee I enjoyed Siege of Paris more than the base game. I played the entire DLC in the Basim outfit and kept meditating to keep it night time so I felt like a true Assassin. For the missions I had to wear a certain hood to infiltrate I wore the white St George armor under so I still felt like an assassin lol It almost felt like the assassin games of old stealthly sneaking around collecting clues to kill my targets. I think this DLC was a step in the right direction t o bringing the franchise back closer to it's roots. I just wish that there was more black box infiltration style missions, or they implemented for the Reda daily and weekly challenges to be black box missions. That would be so cool instead of the same rinse, recycle repeat missions of kill the merchant, kill the farmer and kill the wolf. The assassination contracts should be challenging and fun, and make you have to locate your target with clues before taking them out.

I want to give some pros and cons from what I’ve played:
    Pros:
-cool looking weapons even with mythical weapons
-graphics aren’t bad but I feel like it could be better, also there are some weird places where textures look like blurred clay or play-dough.
-I like the design of characters and how they look, love Vikings
-I also like how you can customize how your character looks with tattoos or different hair styles and colors
-some of the places where you go ally with people are great and get me sucked in, but other places weren’t that engaging
    Cons:
-most of the time I felt like I was slogging through the game and wasn’t enjoying it as much as I did origins or odyssey through story and gameplay.
-how you upgrade your stuff is better but I got tired quickly from getting materials to upgrade and just felt like a chore.
-most choices you make in this game mean little to nothing except 5 different choices in the main game which feels less meaningful, at least with odyssey it felt like these things did matter a lot and were genuinely reasonable.
-skills are cool but there’s too many of them and you need to find two books in order to get the skill and then upgrade it to its final form.
-puzzles are good for the first while then it’s just rinse and repeat.
-don’t get me started on opals and going out to find them all, I feel bad for those 100% completion guys to do this.
-you can buy a silver and xp boost…with real money…need I say more.
-a lot of the armor and weapons in the shop didn’t interest me much…also there barely is any “ice” weapons or stuff like fire and poison weapons.
-barely any assassins brotherhood stuff and it just feels like it was left to the side.
-I don’t even know what to make of the story anymore, I can understand the story of the kingdom hearts games more than this mess.
If you still want to try or play it wait till it’s on sale.
Dlc: Druid’s is meh and siege of Paris is better but not much, mostly you running around France doing the usual things you did in the main game.

The disappointment I felt when I realized yet another DLC wouldnt include the hidden ones nor the order of the ancients... was immeasurable. I had to roleplay on my own pretending I was an Assassin, wearing Basim's outfit the whole time lol.
Aside from that though, solid DLC. The story felt a lot more condensed, to the point, and far less BS filler like the main game. Characters were good aswell, especially Rollo but not actually Rollo but definitely should've been Rollo. Count Odo IMO was the best, by the end I couldn't decide if *SPOILERS* my decision to have him become King was good or not, because he wasnt such a cookie cutter vanilla character. So cudos on that.
ALSO: the French accents absolutely killed me. The one drunk dude who tasks you with finding his daughter LOL. I had to clip it so I could rewatch it. Too funny.
Overall I give it an 8/10

I am a player who loves AC for the environments, junk food gameplay, and open world. The fact that you actually seemed to enjoy the story has me intrigued. I personally can’t connect with most AC stories. I only have a small handful that I have walked away not completely disappointed in(Origins, Black Flag, Wrath of Druids DLC). I know it’s just a me problem with the stories, they just don’t have me emotionally connected/invested most of the time. The fact I may be able to stealth more in this DLC and a possible more interesting story mean I may give it a try.

I think that something pretty cool about the final Charles choice is Richardis' reaction after I killed him (Btw, I wanted to spare him, but didn't know how, and only after watching a video I rememebered about the gate he closed, which made me feel dumb). Her reaction genuinely made me question whether I made the right choice. And her letter after also made me question it again. I think that's show of a good character. You really want to trust her judgment, but you've also seen Charles' brutality and deteriorating mental state with your own eyes.
Btw, there was ONE single Black Box mission in the Raven and Cuckoo side-quest (main game), featuring Eivor team up with Roshan (from the upcoming AC Mirage. Yes, I was very surprised to see her after having watched the first Mirage gameplay video) to kill a target of hers, by disguising and infiltrating Ravensburg, and killing a subordinate in a public manner.

I explored Francia before doing the Main stuff, Eivor is not an Assassins but is slowly becoming one, Stealth has always been an option. People just complain because it's not front and center. I feel like I'm gonna have to go back and actually try to enjoy Siege now. It lost me in the first hour or so of gameplay. I enjoyed the main game, and I enjoy Wrath a lot. BUT I know why. I'm Pagan. Like actually Norse Pagan. I enjoyed the small details of Valhalla, the language and runes and portrayals of the myths. The Gods get their due but the references to the minor spirits many don't normally know about is nice. And Wrath was enjoyable to me because of it's writing and focus on Christian/Pagan struggles and relations. I have to endure this in my actual life so seeing the struggle was great. Paris doesn't suck me in, it never has. The only city in AC that ever sucked me in was Rome, and every city since has just felt either too complicated or too shallow to really care to live in them. I spent most of my time in the countryside, doing the mysteries, absorbing the small details that most people don't know about Paganism and I enjoyed the different takes and the way my faith was portrayed, and that spoke to me. Tyr as my judge, I love Valhalla. I don't love the monetization, the ads, and the shallow workarounds for good content. But overall I really enjoyed the game. Maybe I'll go back and try to get into Siege again and try to finish it. But I've never cared for fast cityscapes and court intrigue. So, we'll see.
