- SKELETAL FAMILY promised land
18 promised land
Formed in December 1981 from the ashes of West Yorkshire band The Elements, this compilation brings together video footage of Skeletal Family. From the early days at Bradford University, with the four piece line up of Anne-Marie, Stan, Trotwood and drummer Howard Daniels, through various supports at London's Marquee club - and also includes promo videos for the singles "Promised Land" and "Restless" (this particular version produced / directed by Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Russell Senior).
Though lots of footage was recorded through the band's career, very little still appears to exist, with large parts of this compilation gleaned from the bands personal collection.

Hi, I made this video long, long ago when I briefly tried my hand at making pop videos for local bands. THis one was filmed on the Yorkshire Moors, we had arranged a time and place to meet and the whole thing took less than an hour because the band had to drive off to a gig somewhere after. For any film geeks out there it was filmed on U-Matic so someone must have transferred it to digital after, I am glad thay they did and that it has survived as a memory of those times. The video was distrubuted by Red Rhino as part of a complation called Cut To The Beat and featured 24 bands that I had tracked down, arranged to meet, and then filmed. When I had all the bands fimed I booked an editing suite in Bradford Jeppops and edited them all down in one very busy week. Ian Smoult
Hi ian, I bought So Sure on vinyl on picture cover around 1984.I met Trotwood in keighley (gods country)many years ago when i gave him a lift home. I had a cassette on and So Sure was playing. Roger said, " thats me on bass" I couldnt believe that i had a member of Skeletal family in my car. Roger went on to roadie with Oasis along with jason rhodes and he got me tickets to see Oasis in 1997 at Sheffield and newcastle.Saw Skels a few times in Keighley but lost touch with Roger. Saw Anne Marie in Skipton Wooley Sheep a few years ago. Still love them and listening to Stans intro to Promised Land takes me back to the 1980s. Glad you posted this
I was just saying how this video was released when they were on an independent label and likely done on a shoestring budget. It's a gnarly video and I dig the revolving close-ups. I was imagining the camera operator rigging up something like a decades early selfie stick for those shots.
Amazing 👏
Wow! That is amazing. I love hearing stories like these.
Thanks for sharing!
The ‘80s was incredible for music. Glad Spotify and UA-cam lets someone like me who didn’t grow up with that stuff discover it. This song kicks ass.
Gotta love goths
@benjamin ollis Fr!!!
If you haven't heard of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, I highly recommend it.
I’ve been listening to 80s music since I was little, I’m 16, and I also do consider myself as goth. Gothic bands like these help discover me being a goth
@@averagegothrespect, do you have Instagram?
Discovered this in 2024 at the age of 41. This is awesome

Check Ghost Dance, with the name is kinda hard to search for it (since most of the time you get something like Ghost - Dance Macabre). Songs like Celebrate, Last Train, Down to the Wire and so on, just search from there. Same singer. Quite a decent discography size (not huge, but "enough" to make it satisfying)
That bass line is just so fucking good.
Sounds like 5 different Peter and The Test tube Babies songs from The Mating Sound of South American Frogs.
For me, it's "gothic rock". I love this song. It reminds me of my youth, when I also listened to Sisters Of Mercy, PIL, Bauhaus, Lords Of The New Church...
I'd say this is definitely more on the deathrock side rather than basic gothic rock. Amazing banddddd
I bought their album way back in 1984/85 when I was driving buses in London. I forgot the name of the group & after years of searching & trying to remember I found them last week. Happy 😊
J'ai 70 ans et j'adore ce groupe depuis longtemps
J'ai vu xmal en belgique dans les annees 80
Merci superbe
Such a underated band
Exacto... :c
i will never get tired of this song
Same
Went to the club last night and requested this! Such a good song.
I really miss my local club 😭
Developers (greedy gentrifiers) sunk their claws into it and made it into a sports bar.
Saw these at the Marquee London back in the 80s, will never forget that night. These and 2 other bands for less than a fiver.
That immortal Death Rocker kid that looks back at me in the mirror.. loves this . Now ancient.. cheers from Huntington Beach CA..
I like this post punk / gothic rock. Sounds really good!
Lanmi Miami; born: 04.01.1994; double Capricorn 🦄🐍🤍💚💗
I love this song, the vocals, guitar and drumming are spectacular. also gotta love their half-hearted attempt at making a video, looks like they can't wait to get back in the van and turn the heater on. I'm seeing them on Halloween in Santa Ana, should be fun.
The videography is actually pretty impressive for a band who was on an independent label at the time. I like how the camera revolves around band members during close-ups. It reminds me of modern videos and using selfie sticks. But in this case, who knows what the camera operator rigged together for that purpose?
Just found an old 12" single, '84 was my senior year in high school, cant believe I've never heard of them, they rock!
They frequently pop up in post-punk/goth/deathrock playlists so now they're in my playlists, considering how good they are.
Love this tune and video. Guitar very reminiscent of old U2. She's adorable.
Sound great
I'd forgotten this band.
John Peel memories 😢
Perfect song.❤
there are a lot of goth bands nowadays that still make songs in traditional goth rock sound, and for some reason i was completely sure that skeletal family was one of them. there's just something modern about their songs, i never thought they were actually from the 80s until i found this video. incredible music
You turn to face me, hold out your hand
Don't you know that this is the promised land
With bright lights shining it seems so bright
Don't you know that things go nice with spice
It felt like we'd been here a thousand years before
When the door broke open and let in
The light
So we ran to an empty space and felt so free
You know we've never felt like this before
You turn to face me, hold out your hand
Don't you know that this is the promised land
With bright lights shining it seems so bright
Don't you know that things go nice with spice
Now I think the time has come to open the box
Let in to the world what's been hidden from inside
Not covering what the day brings, it seems so bright
Don't you know that this is the promised land
Alright
You turn to face me, hold out your hand
Don't you know that this is the promised land
With bright lights shining it seems so bright
Don't you know that things go nice with spice
❤
When I was a teenager, I thought the British landscape was filled with musicians in trench coats wailing at the grey, cloudy British sky. Then I went and saw only rabbits. Rabbits and Massey-Ferguson tractors.
Well you can still listen to Skeletal Family on headphones in a desolate field and relive the 'Promised Land' video with some friends in trench coats -ha.
Happy days, this got every Goth off there arse and on the dance floor.
dance floor? i just sit on some steps outside and smoke while listening to this
@@someperson8271 me too .. well sometimes i'm sitting at a coffee table drinking coffee with my other goths while smoking and listening to this.
@@salatwurzel-4388 you know whats fucked about this society now days any shitbag who listens to gothic music or wears black calls themselves goth since when is this life style about black clothes or listening to some different music

Sounds great and i like the video. Simple and pure 80ties.
Even simpler considering how they were on an independent label at the time and were likely on a shoestring budget.
Stan Greenwood rules!!! I wish I was born sooner to experience this era!
Okay so the other day I found out that my aunt is friends with the lead singer of this band, so I decided to check them out and I really like them
captain jack trash how old is the Singer?
200
They f*ing rocked!
yeh and my dick has cancer from ur lies
Lucky
Brilliant song through and through.
U did great!!!
i love the Song..fantastic
When we were at Trotwood's place in Keighley somewhere, he had a massive pile of their records in his front room. Goth majesty.
Saw them with Sisters of Mercy in Aylesbury in 1984. Great gig - everyone went ape.
I met her....a charming woman. It was Skeletal Family and Play Dead that convinced me Goth was my Gate to artistic inspiration being a musician and poet, myself ....
Hadn't heard of this band until someone recently posted their song. Love it
Anne looks like she is too cool for music videos and I am HERE for it
She is¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Played a festival with these guys years ago at the Knitting Factory in NYC - great set!
I love!!!
Cool song love how the guitar player plays the guitar
Ich hab das Lied mal Anfang der Neunziger im Zwischenfall in Bochum gehört, wusste aber nicht welche Gruppe das war, vielen Dank fürs hochladen.
I love the quirky way she moves her face and eyes and looks around, and the weird camera movement.
I think the camera operator rigged something equivalent to a selfie stick for those revolving close-ups. The crazy thing is how creative they probably had to be on a likely shoestring budget considering that they were on an independent label at the time.
That was so good...memories, memories ! My favorite songs, this & "The Wind Blows"!
Brilliant song...
This video always made me wonder were the drummer is. If you ask me, he is the star of the show on this song, its not common for Post-Punk or Goth Rock to have good sounding drums, they stick to bass + drum rhythms formula most often, but this is actually incredible for a drummer in this genre.
Martin the drummer is a blonde haired guy on guitar in the video
The drummer they have now is called Ozzy and he plays like a mixture of this drummer and Bonham. His groove is really impressive! I saw Skeletal Family when they came to the US a couple years ago and he is one of the most incredible drummers I've seen live.
Joy Division drummer was an Amazing drummer and was the more "real" musician in the group when they started
Krautrock-influenced drummers like Budgie are incredible.
This is some of the raddest shit I’ve ever heard! 🔥🔥🔥
salvaje comentario en castellano aparece , buena banda! saludos desde argentina
vamoooooooooo!!!
Bravo SF genial
I personally know Anne Marie Hurst....friends when she comes to Beverly Hills...
One of the most beautiful songs ever!
finally saw them last night in Leicester...
very impressed!
Saw Anne-Marie Hirst at The Marrs Bar in Worcester last Crimbo. She's still one of the best...
Very cool track
I love it
The Edge!
Heard this tune somewhere a long time ago. Had to order it from a vinyl shop in Bridgwater 😂 (don’t laugh, my home town). When it came through I had the 12” on red rhino records. Have a wall of vinyl today but this still has special place. Thank you ❤
stone cold awesome. what a band.

Happy to say that me, and a random drunk guy started a pit, when they played in LA 2013, the pit got more rowdy when this song was up.
great track to stumble on, thank you!
Wow!
How did this band go under my radar? Thanks for the upload!
I remember this beauty from the Cleopatra Goth Box (which I had on VHS of course, like a million years ago)
Still have it? I mean I can be in the mood of achieve money to buy it from you

Still love this song!
Souxxie and banshees spellbound
Reminds me of September Peter and the rest tube babies 😂
Skeletal family and Ghost Dance, all musical projects by Anne Marie Hurst...she is the gifted musical siren (or ingenue) in these videos ...
This is still effing cool.
