    We like to surf the wakes of passing boats and move between them to create an endless wave on our hydrofoils. We call this wake thieving. To do so, we need a foil that we can launch from our docks, and pump for a very long time. There are more than 50 hydrofoil brands, and within some brands you can build thousands of unique foils from five main components. We want to find the best foils for the lake, so we’ve setup a scorecard based on the 10 most important criteria. Please let us know know which foils you’d like us to review and stay tuned as we share what we learn on our journey to fly forever.
    Disclosure: This season we will review many foil brands recommended to us by viewers, and review these foils with this same methodology. When possible, we will share the exact builds (mast, fuse, rear wing, front wing, etc) to help save viewers the time and energy to navigate through some of the decisions needed to spec a foil. Indiana has created a link to our exact build (shared above). This is an affiliate link, meaning we make a small commission if you buy through our link, but please feel free to purchase through your retailer of choice. #ad

    Do you have a website or something similar with an overview of your test results? I would be happy to create one for you! I am new to website creation but I am up for the challenge.
    I have recently created a website for a shop in my city and want to seek more experience. Greetings from Germany

      Thank you. I do not have a website or a summary of scores. This is on my to do list for the winter. Thanks for reaching out. I'll reconnect in a month or so.

    Straight best foil reviews on the internet. So much bettern than anything else. Still one question: How long were you able to pump it, timewise?

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  3 роки тому

      The pumping duration test is tough because: (1) each time I might be at a different fitness level, (2) I might not yet have mastered the technique to pump at optimal efficiency, and (3) the wind conditions might be different … that said, I was able to pump it for 1min but not 2min. My personal best is 2min 28s.

      @@WakeThief Thanks! Knew your PB, since i watched most of your videos :D. Did you know, recently a guy posted a vid, where he pumped for 6+ minutes? "6min pumpfoiling"

      Yes, Balz Muller! It was truly amazing and has motivated me because it confirms that we can fly much much longer than my 2min. now is it the foil, is it the person or is it high technique ... I'm not sure, but I will find out ... we have that foil and will review soon.

      @@WakeThief I wonder if he, BALZ, did it in SALTY water, as opposed to a lake, I leave in the Middle East and my surfboard floats way more than regular ocean, twintip as well, flies on less wind, however a face wipeout hurt your eyes like never

    Just got into foiling and have a the Horizon 160 from liquid force that i am learning on behind our wake board boat. Want to get a foil i can dock start from and have fun pumping when we aren’t behind the boat. I am 210lbs but athletic. Would you suggest this over the others yo have reviewed. Will make sure to buy through your link. Want to have something fun to mess around with when the family doesn’t want to go out on the boat…. Thanks in advance

      The conference, by design, was very windsports focused. I was probably only person there who couldn’t wing :) I’ll be sharing a video as soon as I can make it. Was amazing for me to foil on a lake other than my own and very cool to put so many faces to names. The tow boogie has to be one of the coolest things I saw!

    Do you have any idea what the angle of attack is during pumping?

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  3 роки тому

      Yes ... but it really depends on the foil ... you usually pump to the highest possible lift coefficient, which is very close to the stall speed. This is 10-14 degrees, depending on the foil and happens during the drive phase ... please check out our video "how to pump forever" to see what I mean ... during the climb phase the foil is very close to 0 degrees, so the range is about 10 degrees.

    The Mast Size:60cm or customized(short for learning and longer for progressing)
    The Fuselage Size:81.1cm
    Mast & Fuselage are one,the total weight is 1.81kg
    The Front wing:69.5cmx28cm/1kg
    Rear wing:44.3x12.7cm/0.24kg
    can I use this? I'm 61Kg I saw in store

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  3 роки тому

      Front wing seems too small to pump for someone at my weight. Possibly at 61kg.

    Thanks for making these great videos !
    Does the stabilizer contribute to forward momentum (speed) ?
    Or does it only provide stability ?
    I prefer kite/wing foiling without a stabilizer, as it has less drag and more agility.
    Would pump-foiling work with no stabilizer ?

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому

      That’s amazing! No rear wing?!?!? Rear wing does three things: (1) stabilize pitch control, (2) introduce turn by allow you to yaw, and (3) pump. No doubt there’s less drag but need rear wing to control pitch which allows you to generate thrust and keep going while pumping. Thanks so much for your kind words and the comment!

    So glad you're reviewing these. Recently opened a b2b account with Indiana for some sups and I've been looking at the wings. It's funny I work on a loch with loads of wind, where people kite, Wing, wind surf and foil with them all. I just want one I can paddle and pump for ever 🤣 if you had a paddle, do you feel you'd be able to extend your times?

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому

      Yes, if I knew how to paddle well and could use it efficiently :)

    Thank you so much (again). I was wondering, do you think the thickness improves dock starting, or is it more the fuse length and surface area? I have experience in other foil sports but haven’t tried dock starting. This winter I want to build the optimal dock starting machine. No wake thief machine or long distance glider, but something that increases the succes rate of dock starting. I can elaborate more on what I’m picturing, but I’m curious to hear what you think makes for a true dock starting machine

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому +1

      There are four important factors for good dock starting: (1) Front wing area as big as possible (largest I've ever tried is 2400sqcm), (2) Foil with a large lift coefficient, usually a lot of camber, which gives more lift but worse drag, (2) Longer mast which gives chance to survive that first glide, and (4) Longer fuselage and/or larger rear wing, which gives best pitch stability, so less need to land in precisely the right location with your feet.

    Hi,
    What is the smallest axis wing you have been able to dock start?

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  3 роки тому

      I’m not a great dock starter but I would say 1600sqcm with aspect ratio of >6.5 and a good lifting foil section is the min for me at 86kg

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  3 роки тому

      I think prone foilers have a huge advantage over someone like me. I don’t have muscle memory of holding board and popping up to my feet, so you can probably go a touch smaller in area.
