Information on things you'll see in this video:
The yarn I used in the cowl is YarnSisters Willow:

The poncho on the mannequin behind me is my Rodeo Drive Poncho, pattern + video tutorial:

The purple scarf I'm wearing is this pattern:
www.ravelry.com...
The yarn I used in the bulky samples is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky, in colors Yonder, Jam, and Silver.
The circular needles I used are Addi Turbos.
The nail color I'm wearing is by OPI, "Berries in the Canaries".
Cee Gee - I talk about this a bit in the video. I consider an intermediate knitter to be someone who is very comfortable with the basics (casting-on, knitting, purling, decreasing, increasing), and gets good tension throughout - and who is ready to tackle more complicated patterns. "Advanced Beginner" is a label I put on many of my tutorials - to me, that is someone who knows the basics, but is still maybe working on good tension, and still learning how to read patterns and combine different stitches. My intermediate patterns rely on the knitter to be a bit self-sufficient with some of the techniques, while my advanced beginner patterns walk the knitter carefully through all the steps.
Thank you! I wonder when I became intermediate... It's thanks to you, Staci. I watch your videos regularly to get the techniques down. They've really helped. Your videos are my online learn to knit book. In fact, I've been wondering if you're going to write a how to knit e-book with links. Probably isn't necessary since your website and the videos are so great as they are.
Omg, I am in absolute LOVE with that purple scarf!
Your tutorials are so clear and your samples easy to follow. I think you are an excellent teacher. I have found some of the worst, so I know when someone is great. Thank you
Staci this cowl is just fab. My mouth just dropped when I saw it and plan to make this my first intermediate project. Thank you for helping my become a competent knitter.. i just love flickin' sticks!
I love your hair style! You always change things up in such a way that's visually pleasing.
Angi Simon - Monroe, WA.
I think that this cowl would look wonderful in red and green christmas colors.
During the summer I like to knit socks, scarves, hats, and other things that are small and use yarns such as cotton, bamboo, and other natural fibers. I am hoping these comments will enter me into the draw for the circular needle set. Love your videos, Maria
I’m so Happy You showed up on my feed ❤
This is a very nice looking cowl. Thnx Staci! Happy to see the channel growing!
As soon as I get around to finishing my entrelac scarf... I'll start on this!
Thanks you for posting link on the scarf you're wearing and on the poncho. Often see you wearing something lovely and want to make that item as well. Thank you also for this cowl, looks comfy and fun to wear.
I LOVE that she is so thoughtful too! Always adds links to EVERYTHING :)
No need to struggle with 16" circular add makes a fixed 12" and fixed 9" circular needle in the smaller sizes, I have size 8 down to 6 and collage makes some 5 down to 0 in a 9" circular. If you have the add click short lace needles set brown case then the shortest red cord plus the short lace needles make the 12 " circular needle. Of course double points would do nicely for the cast on and first round of knitting since you are using just one color for the first row, it shouldn't be too difficult for newer knitters. Thanks for the video and free pattern, I plan to make some up for gifting in the NFL colors.
I'm going to try using a noro yarn instead of red because I think it'll look really interesting with the color variation of noro :)
SUCH a good idea. Kureyon or Silk Garden would be fabulous. Ugh! Why didn't I think of that?!?
Muy bonitos los vídeos, se aprende mucho, gracias por compartir, todos sus trabajos son hermosos, gracias por su tiempo, saludos.
Okay, this pattern is gorgeous and I’m going to definitely make a couple of these(already have two in mind for it) but I’m absolutely always intrigued by your nails! I know you often post your polish and color, but I was wondering if you do them yourself, or if you go to a manicurist? They’re always just lovely no matter the color choice!
I have to say, that this is the perfect project for ANYONE wanting to learn technique with Fair Isle knitting. Definitely is helping me develop my yarn holding technique! Thanks Staci!
Thanks so much for this tutorial and the awesome free pattern!! You rock! I'll definitely be using this pattern!
Thank you! I saw the pattern on the description box for some reason it didnt take me to the site. It came up with error message. But now since I have created an account it does take me to the pattern :)
Beautiful i will try it no doubt :) BTW where do you get your stitch marker from?
Thank you so much for this pattern and tutorial!
This comment may have already been added, but shouldn't the seaming be offset by one stitch just like how the cowl is knitted?
Thank you for your tutorials. I love this pattern. I'm trying to alter this so it looks like a candy cane swirl. But I'm not getting the striping to be seamless. Any ideas? How do I calculate the pattern repeat to be seamless, while it continues to rotate?
On this video you are wering a beautiful skarf, I mean violet stola, where is the pattern for this stola? And thank you for free pattern.
Okay but imagine this scarf using your Hogwarts house colors! 😍
I am trying to find a chunky sweater pattern. No where it can be found. Can you please come up with a simple one???? Thank you
It makes me wonder what is the definition of an intermediate knitter? In my mind intermediate means knows how to do fair isle, intarsia, entrelac, and can adapt sweaters to fit. Since I can't do these yet, I consider myself advanced beginner. Is there a set, skill set or way to judge if a person is where on the scale?
When doing these designs do you multiply the repeat stitches? Like say if it's an 8 stitch repeat do I multiple 8 times 10, Which is 8 stitches repeated 10 times around?
Hi! I am knitting this, but the yarns keep on tangling as i knit... is there away to fix this?
@staci- Are you gonna be at the Vogue knitting Live event in NYC ?
No - afraid I can't make it. The schedule I keep with a new video and new podcast episode every week keeps me too busy for events!
VeryPink Knits understandable. I thought if you were here then I could've finally met you ! I'll have to drive down to Austin to to get your autograph !! :)
It is a beautiful pattern. I really want to make a scarf not a cowl. Would you please help me?
NgocDung Nguyen - I can't really offer a lot of support in modifying my patterns (if I did, that would be ALL I did, all day!), but I can tell you this - knit it up normally, but instead of seaming the two ends together, seam the two ends closed.
Love the purple scarf you wearing! :) do you have a tutorial or pattern for it? Thank you for the free pattern on the cowl! :) something I can knit for my mum :)
Ananta Murti - you'll always find all of the info, including links, about everything you see in my videos in the video description field, just below the video. The purple scarf I'm wearing is this pattern:

@@verypinkknits Looked better on you! :-)
I have been knitting off and on for years, but have never used circular needles, I am having a little problem manipulating them. the cable is very stiff. Any tips?
Susan Sylvia - some brands of inexpensive circular needles, or older circular needles are just like that - the cords are stiff and difficult to manipulate. If you're able to upgrade, there are better brands that aren't too expensive. I especially like Knitter's Pride brand...good value and really high quality...and you won't run into unruly cords.
I'd like to make this for my adult son, who is a barber and would love it! Any advice on sizing/knitting this for a man? Would I simply make it a bit longer?
This is one size fits all - no need to alter it for a man.
@@verypinkknits great thanks!
Do you think I can use a different weight yarn? I love how the cowl have the spiral around and no right side and wrong side. I am trying to make one for my daughter with her college colors for football game.
lma1831 - changing the yarn weight (therefore changing the gauge) would really require a whole new pattern. It can be done, but not with the same results as I show here.
thanks. I will keep that in mind
I am unable to find the yarn you used for this project. Would you please make a suggestion for another option. Thank you.
Any DK or Sport weight yarn will do.
Really cool! Thank you so much!
In order to seam, could you do a provisional cast on and Kitchener the two ends together? Or would that be too difficult to do with the tube style of the cowl?
Yes - that is exactly what we do in my Color My Cowl pattern, and it's a modification you can do to this cowl, as well.
Hi Stacy!
Would you please explain what is meant when a pattern uses the phrase "at the same time"? I think that you have referred to this in a tutorial before but I can't seem to find it. Thanks for your help!
+Donna Hall - "at the same time" means that you will be working two different things at once, likely keeping count of two different things at once. Like shaping a neckline AND keeping count of cable rows. I don't know what pattern you're knitting, but the pattern should explain what two (or more) things you will have to keep track of at the same time.
Thanks for your help. Your videos have taught me so much! I love how clearly you explain the techniques and the video is so easy to follow. Thanks again.
Do the Yarn Sisters not exist anymore? The link you shared doesn't work and their website doesn't have anything more than a logo. If they're gone, do you know a comparable yarn? Your example cowl looks impossibly soft and I'd like to replicate it.
Orcael - I'm not actually sure about the Yarn Sisters company, but any wool or wool-blend yarn in DK/Sport weight will work in this pattern. Knit Picks has a yarn called Capra that is a really nice wool/cashmere blend:
www.knitpicks.com/yarns/Capra_DK_Yarn__D5420109.html
VeryPink Knits Uff that's exactly the point-in-the-direction I was looking for. I was browsing Webs for a Cashmere blend and almost blacked out over the price tags. Capra looks nice and affordable. Thank you very much.
Hello, I am a left hand knitter. Do I read the pattern from Left to right instead right to left?
You can knit the pattern as is, regardless if you're a right or left handed.
Can I pls use different yarn for this cowl. Thanks for the pattern Natasha s
You can use any DK or Sport weight yarn.
I have been fair isle knitting for awhile now. But, when I follow my pattern for this, my two colors of yarn always get twisted around each other, and I end up having to untwist them every so often. Is there any way I can fix this? Because I don't really know why it twists like that....
She explains how in the video. It's the part when she starts talking about keeping a dominant color. Hope this helps!
Shelby Raymond Oh thanks! I didn't catch that! It did help :)
.
The NintenNerds Wonderful! So glad to help :)
Can I use straight needle for this cowl. Thanks Natasha s
No - this design is knit in-the-round. You can find other cowls that are knit flat and seamed on Ravelry, I suggest finding a different pattern if that's the way you want to knit a cowl. Much easier to follow a pattern written for the way you want to knit.
Any good current yarn subs? The YarnSisters is no longer selling yarn and Knit Picks Capra mentioned below does not have a red option.
You can use any DK weight yarn, Knit Picks Gloss is another good option, and they have a nice red.
Perfect! Thank you!
Charlotte Kozlowski - I'm using Woolike by Loops and Threads and its knitting up beautifully. They have a gorgeous red too. www.ravelry.com/projects/conicuts/barber-pole-cowl-2
Is anyone else having trouble getting gauge on this? I'm using KnitPicks Capra which is a similar DK yarn to the one used in the pattern. I started out on US 5 needles and got 5 sts per inch after blocking. Went down to size 3s and tightened my tension but I am still getting a bit over 6 sts which will probably be a bit under 6 once I block it. I'm having a hard time trying to get 7 sts on a DK weight yarn. IIt seems a bit excessive to go down to US 2 needles especially when my gauge is usually pretty close to Staci's on her other patterns I've knit. Anything I'm missing?
The yarn I used (which has been discontinued) is a very light DK weight. You are close enough with 6 stitches to the inch.
VeryPink Knits thanks so much!
Thanks
