    Wow, what a huge collection! I live in California and we are spoiled in that figs grow with literally no care from me. Must be challenging to grow in 5b!

    Nice video. I don’t like using zip ties though, too much plastic waste into the landfill ; I prefer to use garden twine.

      Yea… I need to be better. I use to do garden twine but the wire can cut pretty bad if you forget. It happens. Some one recommended pipe cleaner. I’m gonna check that out.. but ty so much for watching!

    How height does the tree get before you let it branch out? I like the single trunk form too. Good tip about cutting off the lower leaves to let the air flow. Thank you for this informative video. Can’t wait for your Jadam upload. Cheers.

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  5 місяців тому +1

      I’ll let it grow one trunk for the first full season. The taller the better. Thicker trunk. And when it’s time to prune… I’ll do 30” on most varieties. 24” on the late varieties.

  • @MrCoreySteel
    @MrCoreySteel 2 місяці тому +1

    This might sound stupid but... When you cut "extra branches" for single truck at 2:35, aren't you afraid you'll be left with no branches the next year, or are there always buds left that will make them :)

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  2 місяці тому +2

      The fig tree needs to make fruit. It’s in its DNA to survive. Thus it needs to make more branches so more figs can grow. Figs = seeds = life. That’s all nature wants to do. Survive! So yes it’ll make new branches. You just can’t always control where those branches are gonna grow from.

    Your figs are looking awesome! Thanks for the tips. I needed some! :D I've been trying to do better at training my young figs this year. I prefer the one main stalk form too but some of mine have some work to do. This video made me want to go out and start doing some work on my figs. I was curious what you feed those guys. Look forward to your JADAM video. I've been wanting to try that. So how many figs do you have and how do you keep the birds away from eating them all? :D

      I’m an anti pincher until I get the tree to its final form. I love shaping my trees. I stare at them everyday for hours… training them is one aspect I love about these trees… tasting them is just a bonus for me.

    All your hard work is paying off in a big way! May I ask how often do you root prune and have you noticed less root pruning in the Fabric Grow Bags?

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  5 місяців тому +1

      My oldest trees are going on their 3 year here. I haven’t root pruned to keep in the same pot. But I have root pruned cause I up potted and cut the bottom to make the tree lower. No experience with fabric pots except with my vegetables and will never do it again. LOL

    I understand that first year you are trying to create a one trunk whip with no side branching. I see you are cutting off side branches. Will those branches grow back in the same location in year two?

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  5 місяців тому +2

      A branch can grow from any node… it’s just what the tree wants to do. It might not do it next year and the following year all of a sudden you will get a branch at that node location.

      1. Growing (weeds, grass, rabbit poo)
      2. Fruiting (unriped figs, bananas, banana flower)
      3. Crab leg, mussels and clam

    I think the fig I have in my backyard is a common fig. It doesn’t have a red or a vibrant color. The taste is barely sweet, very light and kinda dry and fibrous. Is that typical for common fig or am I doing something really wrong? Thx!
