That is a truly premium mix. You cut no corners. UA-camr and nursery owner Gary Matsuoka does some excellent educational videos on gardening, soils, etc. HIs is convinced most of the commercial potting mixes that rely heavily on tree bark are killing plants. Especially perennials. He talks in his videos about some of the stuff you talk about. I think the mix he now uses and sells is around 65% pumice and 35% peat. I recall him being a fan of rice hulls, too, but his suppliers don't like dealing with it in bulk. Thanks for the video. I was sweating just watching you work in that heat.
This mix was inspired by great gardeners like him. I like pushing the standard norm of what the masses do and love learning in the process. Some are successful ideas, some not so much. Also, be careful of the idea of pine/tree bark. I started to see some studies saying that it’s a myth but haven’t had the time to dive into it too much. Ty so much for watching it! Nice video. I highly recommend checking out Subpod worm composters. It’s an in-ground system. I now have several around the property. The planting beds they are in grow unbelievably well’ and the worms have overwintered in my SE Pennsylvania winters for 3 years now. All the benefits of worm composting without the fuss. Lastly, consider wearing a mask when mixing and transferring to containers. The particles can really mess with your lungs.

I save a lot creating my own worm castings, compost, leaf mold, biochar, etc…. But it takes alot of room and alot of time.
My recipe contains sand, decomposed granite (DG), peat, perlite (larger size), rock dust, activated biochar. Additional ingredients are added over time via microbial teas. 33% worm castings will compress the soil to much but I use worm castings as a top dressing often. I’ll make a video within the next two years 😂

I agree with this mix is probably the best for any potted fruit plant. The issue with this is not many people will be able to afford it, Way too expensive. I would add 10% sand for more aeration. For my climate that much compost will hold too much water.
Coco is more sustainable than peat for sure. But speaking for North America, Canada the leading producer of peat, has stated many times that they set regulations in place to make sure we never harvest more than what is replenished. If sustainability is a concern, you can make this mix with coco coir. I did it my first year and had success.
You are the best teacher, and explain your logic so well. Please do add the recipe as I would like to modify my soil with your recommendations. A compost thermometer would help you watch the temp of your bin when it drops below 80, you could add red wiggler composting worms to boost the life in the soil and they would add aeration.
Not bad… $23.20 per cubic feet… that’s on par with the top soil mixes. And mine is designed to last forever with proper top dressing and organic fertilizing practices.

Hi Homer Adam here from QLD 🇦🇺 😊👍 love your mix I use organic soil / compost mix / perlite / worm castings /lime thats my mix and my figs love it I maintain my figs with a product called Neutrog / which I mix various seamungus / Gyganic / rooster booster/ then I maintain this with liquid seamungs / GogoJuice and I use a mulch called Whofungdung which these products have all the biological microbes your plants need look it up Homer and also once a every season I use POPUL8 SAME products your doing really well mate 👍 I always enjoy your videos 👍😊🇦🇺
People are growing crops with salt water and coir is a waste product but you destroy habitats when you harvest peat which most people treat as single use.
Perlite you can crush between ur fingers… pumice you can not. Pumice last a lot longer than perlite. Pumice is a lot heavier than per light. so it stays mixed in the soil better and doesn’t float to the top as easily as perlite. But yea they exactly almost the same thing.

@@FiggarigLarry sometimes I add crushed oyster shells to the mix. Especially if the mix is just for figs. It adds calcium and extra aeration!

Yes coir is a by product. Def a better solution for the world. Just doesn’t work as well for living soil.
But u just started me on researching about salt water farming.
