If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

good evening I am European.. French there are numerous concert recordings, live work in French cities, Montreux in Switzerland, Amsterdam, in Italy or other countries. recordings for radios. so the record day acts as a test… once the audiophile sales of the best-known albums have been achieved. In addition to catalogs like Blue Note, there will be a possibility of huge editions.

The Acoustic Sounds Series release of Baker’s Holiday, in October, is going to be so much more desirable than any of this years RSD Baker releases. I have an original but will probably grab that up in an instant.🤔😊

The fact that Chad Kassem is puitting out the Contemporary series will push the Shelley Manne lps. And its like saying votzek, the Polish guy. Poland's Jazz scene was on fire from the 50s onwrds, with the 60s and 70s being the white hot centre. Still to this day two of the finest living jazz pianists are from there, in Lezsek Mozdzer and Marcin Wasilewski. Try the formers smells like teen spirit, and Marcin's Message in a Bottle.

I'm actually looking forward to that Sun Ra Disney album :-) 'Pink Elephants On Parade' from Dumbo is a great track and in it's original version is only available (I think) on a 1988 compilation. Curious about the other tracks.

Of the ones you covered, the Rollins is the stand out for me. But you missed a really desirable one: Amancio D'Silva's Reflections. Maybe that's not on the US list but for UK jazz collectors, that one is going to attract a lot of attention.

The Sonny Rollins is an RSD first, so will be available later on, which should downgrade the limited nature of it. In terms of price, I’d bet it goes for $110. Regardless, I’m also excited for it

Wow Brown, I guess I don't disagree with your assessment of the McBride/Meyer release but if you've never heard Edgar Meyer do yourself a favor, one of the best bassist in the world in my opinion. Excited to hear this!

The albums from Elemental/Resonance/Jazz Detective were cut from digital files, that doesn't mean they cannot sound good or great. But transparency is key. "Transferred from" is a VERY vague term that gets tossed around by many a label. I buy originals or AAA cut re-pressings. Does make me special? NO, you collect what you collect and so do I.

I came late to collecting the Candid reissues, buying seven of them in 2023, and I only had a quality control issue with one, which was warped and replaced instantly by Amazon. That replacement and all the others were pristine, quiet vinyl in quality jackets. Above all, the remastering by Bernie Grundman is superb in my opinion, topping Kevin Gray in all but his meticulous Tone Poet offerings (i.e., superior to the hit-and-miss Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series). I would enthusiastically recommend The Straight Horn of Steve Lacy to anyone contemplating the Candid reissue series. Buy it and see what you think. I just kept buying them after that and was highly pleased. Mingus titles, Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Booker Ervin. Even the prices undercut the BN Classic Vinyl Series.

The ones I’m primarily interested in are Brother Jack (I’m an organ fan) Sonny Rollins and Art Tatum. May pick up the Manne because I think the Reel to Real productions are desirable and very good. The NKC is inviting but I’m on the fence about it. The Evans album is great but there’s been too many RSD Evans releases in my opinion. I have the complete JATP on cd and while this was one of the best JATP sessions Granz put on, I will probably pass on it.

The Brother Jack could be fantastic especially if it's in the Moon Rappin era which was a great fairly recent reissue. My opinion but Brother Jack always grooves and why hire Kevin Gray if it's not good musically?

    • @jazzvinylcollector
      @jazzvinylcollector  4 місяці тому +1

great point. Moon Rappin was just two years prior. It looks like this release was the same year as The Heatin System for Cadet which was some long format jamming kind of tunes. Could be very worthwhile indeed

I found an original of the Dave Pike album about 5 years ago at an estate sale. It's an odd album. Doors of Perception is one of my favorite Aldous Huxley books, I like psych and jazz music so I couldn't wait to get home to listen to it. That was five years ago and I didn't think about it again until I saw it listed last week. I was like, "hmmmm I have that somewhere, why haven't I listened to it much"? To be fair, I picked up about 100 jazz albums at that estate sale, as this was before many people were vinyl crazed, and many of those other albums pushed this way to to back. I listened to it again last week and it's okay. It's a unique album, not many albums were put out on the Vortex label and this one is completely mint. I think the aura of the title outweighs the experience of the music but I wouldn't discourage someone from looking into it. It has a few interesting moments. That being said, I've listened to it twice in 5 years.
The Craft Bill Evans is a no-brainer. Before too long, we will have the whole Acoustic Sounds 45rpm box set on high quality 33rpm reissues! That's always been my hope.
Recently I've turned away from multiple album releases. These 3 and 4 album packages are too much for my taste. Box sets are different since they are usually comprised of different releases. I don't listen to these multi- vinyl releases from "lost tapes" that cost $59-$79 that much, or at least listen to the whole recordings all the way through that much. But that's probably just me.
Give me the jazz dispensary all day long! In my opinion, Craft continues to rule RSD for the jazz lover.

You did not mention that the Parker album has cover art by David Stone Martin who was the 'King of Cover Artists'. The only one who comes near is Andy Warhol who did far fewer album covers. Lester Young also features on the Parker album. I cannot understand comments like this is from 1949 or 1953 , so early live material etc, as though this were a health warning. A lot of great jazz was produced both live and in the studios before the mid 1950s, but I am someone who listens to the music and not just the sound quality. I was born in 1949, by the way. Getting older, but still 'good to go' 😎.

The marketing lingo using the word “reels” instead of “master tapes” is odd to me. I thought all master tapes are played on reels, aren’t they??
