Noisy EGR solenoid valve

  • 2007 Fiat Ducato 2.3 JTD. Sometimes when I start it, it idles fine but I have no power for a couple of minutes before it clears. No engine warning lights or fault codes so far. MPG is a bit worse at the moment and it sounds a bit grumbly. There was also a whirring noise from somewhere under the bonnet, but I assumed that was powered steering related... turns out the noise is coming from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve.
You can hear from the audio that pulling the pipe kills the buzzing noise, what's not so obvious is the engine also sounds a bit less laboured... to be investigated.

The buzzing sound is a solenoid activating at idle to open the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. Apparently it's quite normal. At idle, there's an odd buzz that you can hear inside the cab which goes away as soon as you add a bit of throttle. The reason the engine sounds laboured (and the reason it goes away if you disconnect the solenoid pipe) is that it's allowing exhaust back through the intake. This is an emissions thing that Fiat used to do (not sure if the newer AdBlue engines still do this?). Bottom line is the thing I've shown in the video is nothing to worry about and wasn't related to my problems. Apparently the solenoid can go bad, but some buzzy whine is normal (although a bit irritating).
What was causing my power loss issue was the throttle body was dying. There was water getting into the mechanism that opens the butterfly valve in the throttle meaning the throttle wasn't opening and closing properly. A test is that when you turn off the engine, if you wait a few seconds, you should hear a nice click as the throttle body snaps fully closed. Mine wasn't doing this. Apparently it was a problem with the 2.3 litre engine for the first few years of the x250 shaped Ducato. They eventually fixed it after several revisions by moving the mechanism to a side that doesn't collect water. So later Ducatos should be OK. A throttle body replacement isn't cheap!

@@DavidMcGuigan Thanks and sorry but I don’t understand everything in English 😬 so what is the throttle? Is it the EGR?
Because I changed this little thing who produce noise and it don’t change anything. My real problem is when I start the engine, after 30sec or 1min, it cut himself.. so maybe it’s the EGR but I’m not sure. I’m a beginner 😔

@@thenomadicchalet If you press the accelerator pedal and the noise goes away, then it it working properly. My mechanic told me that what I recorded in the video is normal.
The 'throttle body' is the part of the engine that controls the amount of air going into the engine. With older 2.3 engines (2007 to ~2009), the throttle body is prone to failure. The butterfly valve in the throttle body stops working properly. This is what wasn't working on my van and was causing my van lose power and have bad fuel economy.
On the Fiat 2.3 engine, the throttle body also contains the EGR valve. Apparently the EGR valve part doesn't go wrong very often on this engine (unlike Fords and VWs).
