    Thanks Ken, you're spot on about Freddie Hubbard. He's my favorite on trumpet. Also love those collaborations he did with Woody Shaw.

    Thanks Ken. Now that I am retired my vinyl budget is no longer going to allow me to be a Tone Poet and Blue Note Classic completist so any insights in to what might be the best titles to get is appreciated! Shout out to the Jazz Bums as well for their extensive comments on the 2023 Blue Note series scheduled releases!

    Mr. Natural is Elvin on drums. Also Lee, McCoy, Cranshaw, and Ray Barretto. Recorded just a few months away from a love supreme. A fantastic record, even though there is a Beatles tune on it.

    Been waiting forever for the TP treatment on Hill's Dance with Death. The alternative is buying the 1980 black & blue label BN as the 1968 recording never got released until 1980. Hoping the TP captures what we would have heard from a 1968 pressing, if not better.

    The ScoLoHoFo record is incredible listened to it last night. It was recorded live to 2 track at sear sound in 2002, and it sounds like they are in the room. Please Ken give it a chance Al foster sound incredible and even Dave Holland who I can take or leave is smoking. Interesting to see the Madlib reissue in there. It makes we hope for a reissue of the entire Blue Note Beats compilations. I have my eye on a seller in Japan who has the first 3 on vinyl, but I just can't justify the price and shipping, as much as I love them. The CD's will suffice for now. I'd love to see a reissue of US3 - Hand On The Torch. Maybe reissue the "Straight No Chaser" LP of source recordings (which honestly I listen to more than Hand on the Torch).

    With the caveat that I have not heard every single recording here, as a group the set is just OK. Mostly middle-weight albums that have their moments, but very few gems and some worth completely passing over. I would say if you are a fan of the artist it's worth grabbing, but otherwise, not a lot of "must haves."

    • @kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455
      @kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455  Рік тому

      I could not disagree more. Schizophrenia is an exceptional album in the Canon of jazz music as are a number of these recordings. It’s funny you say what you don’t like but you don’t offer any alternatives. The typical UA-cam peanut gallery in action.

    • @terrywho22
      @terrywho22 Рік тому

      @@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 And typical cheerleading from a reviewer who considers any above average recording to be the greatest thing ever (aka a "must have.') So you say there are several "exceptional" recordings in this batch? OK, define "exceptional." A top 100 album? Top 500? 2000? I would argue that if there are several HUNDREDS of albums you'd rather have, then it may not be exceptional to the point of being a "must have." That's not to say there aren't very nice albums in this batch... Blue Spirits, as with most Freddie Hubbard albums is underrated and I may get that one. The Hill and Evans albums may be great but I've never heard them. But I have Slow Drag and while it's funky and has interesting perspectives, outside of Slow Drag and Book's Bossa is it a must have? Not really. The Half Notes albums have some great Byrd solos, but the arrangements aren't going to blow you away and are marred by less than stellar drumming that is not recorded particularly well. Schizophrenia has some great moments, but lags behind Shorter's truly exceptional albums like Speak No Evil, Night Dreamer, and Adam's Apple. I'd probably put Juju ahead of Schizophrenia as well. Those first 3, possibly all 4, are true must haves. Now, if you like Shorter's eclectic wanderings, you'll enjoy this album, but don't expect the focus and coherence of the other albums I mentioned.

      @@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Looking at Mr. Natural for example, I could name 15-20 albums by Miles Davis I'd rather have, and several by Cal Tjader, Cedar Walton, Joe Henderson, Charlie Haden, many others...
