I love that Blue Note Classics is made... when you are on a strict budget like me. It is fantastic that i can get a classic record at that price. That is way more important than gatefold, prints and all kind of accessories. Thank you to Blue Note... that makes it possible to collect records for somebody like me... And Michael thank you for presenting the albums in a informative way... great job.
When’s the review of Kevin Gray’s new all valve recording , SHAPES AND SOUNDS? I have it. Amazing recorded sound. Fremer gave it an “11”. Most are on preorder now.
The Bobby Hutcherson record is transcending. The music he and Mr. Land create is on another level. I agree with the overall sound. An 8 out of 10. But the music is a solid 10. Great stuff as always, Michael. Thanks for doing what you do.
The easy answer to what happened between 1968 and this release. You can hear it in. John scofields playing, you can hear it and everybody's playing how they've distilled all of the history of those great musicians in the '60s into their playing. I feel like your reaction to this one and the other Lovano title in the classic series are ones that come from at first listen. It sounds like this, rather than getting deeper into each of these musicians, histories and development. You are absolutely right though from the jacket to the sound quality of this one is stunning, I bought it when it came out on CD back in 2002 and I'm shocked at what I hear on this release, one of my favorite tone poets so far!
Hi Michael, agree on the overall superior Blue Note quality of the 50&60s productions but the Grant Green one is really a killer. I realized that I can’t stop turning it louder and louder - so funky. I have the German 1st and a 90s US reissue and I have to say that the current release is beating both when it comes to dynamics and soundstage.
Has anyone else noticed something strange on the Bobby Hutcherson album? The track listing on the cover and the labels are in the wrong order, BUT the liner notes are correct! I only noticed this because I was reading them while listening. Fantastic album as is the Grant Green. Thanks for the video Michael
it's the other way around : the track listing on the back cover is correct but the liner notes are wrong. It's explained in the comments on discogs. If you re-read the liner notes it's actually quite funny how confused they are
You are a „kleiner Schlingel“. Basically my February Shopping bag was packed (see Insta). But then Kenny D was back in stock and on top you‘ve mentioned „Scolohofo“. Never heard of it before…checked it out and…fell in love. Next item in my shopping cart. That should be enough for my personal „Jazzuary“ 😄😎
The Monk sounds fantastic considering these recordings are from the forties ! There are some distortions, however these can not be heard between the tracks so I guess this is just tape noise. Would love to see the Vol.2 as well in the series.
There are lots of other good recordings between 1986 and 2002 but I believe they released the Scolohofo because it was recorded to 2-track analogue tape in contrast to other mostly digital recordings during that time.
Waiting on my Tone Poets but the Classic series of Monk is one that I have an OG copy that is very, very clean thanks to my father. I got the Classic version just for comparison. I tend to like whatever OG copies from my dad’s collection. I like the fact that Blue Note is releasing albums that are from what you call the golden era. It’s about diversity. Thank for your honest opinion. Cheers
I enjoy your fine examination of the records sound. I assume not every BN (or other) record is top audiophile sounding and you do help in that regard. thanks
Good stuff, Michael. Although you didn't mention if they were "Waaan haaaahdred eiiiiighty greeehhm, towwwwwtahhly flehhht, paaahhhhfekt vyyyynahl..." :)
Hi Micheal, did you ever cover the classic series Evolution and Point of Departure? Would be great to have your input for those two compared to music matters.
Interesting titles Michael. Grant Green looks tempting..I got the feeling you were slightly underwhelmed by the releases , maybe more exciting titles coming our way. In your case Michael your viewing it as a collection in it’s entirety,so there will be unfortunately albums that are lets say lacking in the wow factor. As a whole collection every title is important. A pleasure Michael see you on the next video 👍
I disagree on the Grant Green issue. On my system this is one of the best, if not THE best sounding Classic release. It sounds so good, that I suspect Kevin G has used his all tube gear for mastering… fantastic!
Gray has a new all tube recording chain and just issued his first recording in his studio. I would guess that he does now have a all tube mastering chain or what would be the sense of an all valve recoding that was mastered in solid state?
@@ericlubow4354 Yes I know. i agree that it sounds odd, but he said in an interview that the studio was recording only and that he was satisfied with his solid state mastering chain.
Michael, how do you get the time to listen to all these reissues! Maybe once all right, but you hardly have the time to repeatedly listen to all the stuff you are collecting!
Great assessment - there are so many other Grant Green's that could have chosen - is this for the masses? When acquiring these aduiphile recordings do you also obtain more of their backround or just single albums for each (most) artists)?
Dear Michael , thanks for the video! Could you tell me please, will the new acoustic sounds reissues for 2023 (notably the Alice Coltrane) be available for purchase via your webshop or should I pre-order via their US web site? thanks
I was dissappointed with the "San Francisco" release. May be the blame is on the original master tapes or whatever was available to use, but it sounds awful for me, lifeless.

Michael, just want to say how much I enjoy your channel. Your enthusiasm for music is infectious!
thx a lot John!!

Hey- just imagine the trees they’re saving by reissuing the series in the thinner jackets.
Hate those cheap covers!
Yes "the trees". Blue note's primary concern 💰

@@Suggsonbass ah ok thanks for that. So it clearly wasn’t only me that was confused 😂
San Francisco is a great record. It's a West Coast recording so not a van Gelder etc
I love your videos when you talk about jazz vinyls. You must talk about album "karma" (Pharoah Sanders), please.
Fantastic sounds for your hi-fi today!
I also guess it's the exception wtihin the Blue Note reissues, and of course Kevin Grey's re-masterings (he is my favorite mastering engineer).

Finally Blue Note again....

If I recall correctly, the early Monk blue notes were recorded before tape technology, so the music was cut directly to lacquer discs.
Have become a big fan of Fusion and it is ending up on my turntable often. The cover art is great and makes the artists work more appealing.

I'm first! LOVE the Tone Poet reviews the best! Danke mein feiner deutscher Freund!
I enjoy your fine examination of the records sound. I assume not every BN (or other) record is top audiophile sounding and you do help in that regard. thanks
Sounds quality won’t be the same on the 70s titles as by then Blue Note had been sold to Liberty and Rudy Van Gelder wasn’t involved.
The Grant Green OG is a van Gelder cut.
These videos cost me about $50 a week!!
Agreed,so much cool stuff 60s-80s.So little time, for me.
I'd be nice if the classic series would go back to the classics. I don't mind some obscure titles but I think we need some others repressed first.
Interesting titles Michael.

when those records were released, folks could afford a few per year. You get 20/day :)🎉
Great work Michael, thanks for covering these!

I do not think he uses tubes when mastering, I can almost recall him mentioning this during the Blue Train discussion. I could be wrong though.
@@jollyg97 Yes, his mastering chain is solid state.

I guess it’s possible but I will say I have the new recording and it couldn’t sound more valve-like; it’s phenomenal!

Eine Frage abseits der Musik. Woher kommt die schönen Sweatshirt/Pullover die du trägst? LG
meine Frau bringt mir die mit wenn sie einkaufen geht .-)

Great news, thanks !
San Francisco should have been a Tone Poet. It is certainly not a CLASSIC. Great music nevertheless.
I was dissappointed with the "San Francisco" release. May be the blame is on the original master tapes or whatever was available to use, but it sounds awful for me, lifeless.
Sounds like you are complaining about literally nothing
