Venice Beach Crackdown: Police Clamp Down on Illegal Biking on the Boardwalk

- On Friday, August 16, 2024, Los Angeles Police Officers were stationed along the Venice Beach Boardwalk as part of a newly formed task force aimed at educating the public and enforcing the no biking rule on the boardwalk. The initiative comes in response to a recent severe electric bike accident that left a child unconscious after being struck by a youth rider.
Around a dozen LAPD officers, including two sergeants, were strategically positioned across the boardwalk to maximize visibility and ensure compliance. The task force's primary focus was on preventing accidents and promoting safety by redirecting cyclists and pedicab operators to the designated bike path.
Speaking to Santa Monica Closeup during the enforcement, LAPD Sergeant Decoite explained, "We're out here today doing some education to keep bikes and pedicabs off the boardwalk for safety reasons. It's all about community safety."
He further added, "We're redirecting all bicycles and similar vehicles onto the bike path where they belong. We're focusing on education today, with the hope that we can limit citations and just inform the public."
The enforcement aligns with Los Angeles Municipal Code section 63.44 B16, which states, “No person shall drive or ride any cycle or vehicle, whether powered by a motor or human power, except on paths, roads or drives designed and provided for such purposes.

THANKS for the awesome bike ride down the Venice Bike Trail. Its so incredibly amazing that Venice has finally been restored to its beauty I knew it to be over a decade ago. When I accessed a link in 2021 I almost cried at all those unsightly makeshift living quarters nightmarishly crafted by the homeless along Venice's once-magical Boardwalk! I truly thought that was the end of that magnificent artistic community where I once spent an enjoyable summer. But about a week ago, I came across your brilliant stream here re: the cleanup campaign of the last few years. BRAVO!

This is great and about time. Now let's get rid of the scooters and the skateboards also. They have total disregard for the pedestrians.

This video is in the city of Santa Monica. I live in Los Angeles which has become lawless on minor crime. As a pedestrian on the busy downtown sidewalks, I first had to compete with silent bicycles. Then electric rental scooters were brought in en-masse; my closest call was when I had no idea one was racing past me until I felt my clothes sucked into the vacuum it created as it flew by. Then e-bikes joined in. Now delivery MOTORcycles drive on the sidewalks!

because it's faster, there is shade in the mornings, and the annoyingly twisty, sandy bike path is full of pedestrians. And, there are many days and times of days when the boardwalk is wide open, few people, lots of space for bike riders being careful and riding slow. It's the few out of control a-holes on e-bikes & scooters that ruin if for all.

Last time I rode that path it was ridiculous. Had to ride like 3 mph to get around everyone. Twice I had little kids jumping onto the path right in front of me. And when I just miss them, the parents scream in horror and then look at me like I'm the dangerous lunatic when they allow their kids do this. Get the F off the bike paths and walk on the damn pedestrian path! Thank you so much, we'll all be safer.

Venice Beach is a lot larger than it appears in UA-cam videos. There’s about 250 yards of sandy beach between the shoreline and the sidewalk. Most of the year, the beach and the walkways are clean and free of clutter.
Good thing they solved all the other crimes and now have time to worry about cyclists.
In the UK the legal limit is 15 mph and throttle only allowed up to 3 mph for walk assist.
Actually riding around 20 - 30 mph seems much safer here in the UK as it flows with traffic much better.
Police department should done this a long time ago. Instead of banning the bikes on the boardwalk they should start cleaning the homeless crisis and the high crimes

I was thinking the same thing. If these are TCFP (Trained Crime Fighting Professionals) then it's a huge waste of resources. The city needs to create a lesser class of enforcement person (old school meter-maid equiv) who have recognized authority and a police radio. Non-compliant people get to interact w/the real cops.

Regulators are some behind on regulating e-bikes.
Some -like mountain bikes with an e assist - don’t need it.
But many electric bikes are essentially quiet low-Hp motorcycles.
They need to be required to be licensed. And to be banned from walking paths AND bike lanes.

Wow, there are sooo many cynical people commenting here. As Sargent Decoite explains, it is a reminder not to cruise down a very crowded pedestrian area on a bike. There's literally a bike path running right next to the walking area. You people just need to be angry about seemingly everything. Chill out, it will lower your stress levels.

Go out and get the many pedestrians off the bike path in VB, too! That alone is a recipe for accidents, and there are a lot of people, often in groups, on the VB bike path, many lost and confused tourists, etc.
